[Q] Hi Data Usage - Exchange - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
I tend to stick to the One X forums when posting, but this is a work related issue. We support multiple Android devices, that use ActiveSync for Exchange services. We're running Exchange Server 2010 and the mobile in question is a Telecom r22 (hunk of rubbish).
All of a sudden, Data usage for the stock email app went from 30Mb per month to 150Mb+
Can anybody think of why this has happened? Note that wiping the device is not an option. It is not rooted and stock etc. Currently running ICS 4.0
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do you know if the Exchange 2010 got any recent updates?
Also do you know if the Exchange server isn't having some outages on the net?
Also have you got any way to tell if there isn't something changing frequently on the exchange, and that's why it syncs more?

Thanks for the response, as far as I'm aware the sync schedule is set on the device. This hasn't changed. The schedule is two weeks sync using push mail. I did think that push could be the problem, but most days the emails received calculated all together are 5Mb or thereabouts. The day I started this thread, the data usage went 50Mb+ that day alone.
I did install update roll up 6 for Exchange Server 2010 Sp2 recently. But the change log for that roll up does not include any changes to Exchange ActiveSync. There are no 'frequent' changes on the server side.
Thanks

Did you ever figure anything out with this? I am having the same problem. Data usage one day was 250MB before I noticed.
I'm not sure what our Exchange setup is but I have noticed if I remove the account from the phone and set it back up the problem goes away for about a month then comes back.

Exchange Calendar Sync Broken...

Hi all,
Received my new Thunderbolt on Friday and all looks good except battery life and the Exchange ActiveSync Calendar sync. The battery life I can work around, but it seems a lot of people trying to sync the TB to an Exchange 2010 calendar are having issues. I cant post links yet, but a google search for "thunderbolt exchange calendar" will show the posts from others.
Here is what is happening:
When the account is created on the phone, the initial sync of calendar fails with "sync is currently experiencing problems". No existing events are pulled to the phone. However, you can create new events and they do sync immediately with the Exchange calendar - edits and deletes are fine too.
This is likely a Sense 2.0 issue because 2.2 with Sense 1 works fine on other devices with Exchange 2010.
I have tried removing the account several times, clearing data in the calendar app, removed all sync accounts and readded - nothing works. I changed the duration of data sync for calendar, nothing.
I am going to try removing the phone relationship from the Exchange server and start over to see if that works.
Just posting here as an FYI and to see if anyone has an idea for troubleshooting.
Tried wiping the phone and deleting the Exchange relationship - no go, same issue.
I am having the same issue. There is a Google thread in their forums with others as well
I hope they get it fixed soon.
Exchange issues have plagued 2.2 for some time.
Works great in 2.3 however (not a help I know).

I'm not sure if that plan is similar to the following two data packages offered by Verizon.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...m=phoneFirst&featureType=phone&featureId=2547
I have broken Active Sync as well. I love HTC phones and my Incredible was killer phone wise, synced with no issues - even when the Motorola phones where broken due to an update that forced security policies to the phones.
I just spoke to someone at Verizon and they where not aware of any issues. The data package shouldn't effect sync issues cos I haven't paid their exchange package EVER and have had 0 issues with exchange mail with 2 other phones. This is exclusive to the Tbolt.
FYI...Only fix is to Root device
Active sync works with everything once I rooted the TB. The calendar sync didn't work before root. I rooted and kept the default HTC ROM and kernel and then the calendar sync started working. I didn't try contact sync before I was rooted so I can't comment on the validity of this working before root. Hope this sheds some light on the subject. I seems that VZW blocks the sync active sync unless you purchase the higher "business" data plan.

Rooting doesnt make any difference for us, we have 3 Bolts at work all rooted running different ROMS and none would sync calendar with Exchange.
The workaround is to go into your calendar, change to list view, select all items, add a category (any will do). Then select all items again and remove the category. After that sync of calendar items both past and future will work.

Exchange (corporate) calendar sync problem after factory reset

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me. I have a Fascinate which has worked fine up until I did a factory reset. I did this reset after picking up the Froyo update. The phone and calendar worked fine after getting Froyo, it was only after the reset that the exchange calendar stopped showing events...
I have never rooted or otherwise messed with my phone. It has picked up any available OTA updates and is running 2.2.1 and build ED04.
Here's some more info:
My corporate exchange calendar refuses to show any of my calendar events (but fortunately exchange email is fine).
I have been through multiple levels of support at both VZ and Samsung. I have also received a replacement phone from VZ (which behaves exactly the same).
No other Andriod phone hitting our exchange server seems to have this problem. I'm in our IT department so I know that all the account config settings are fine.
As I look at the timestamp for the corporate calendar it seems current but the calendar remains empty.
Both VZ and Samsung simply told me to use Touchdown as a "solution". I'd really, really like fix this and go back to using the stock calendar.
Any suggestions out there?
Welp, im just wondering all over today and i saw your question with not much of a response so i figured i'd throw in my "2 cents" as to what has solved that for a few people i work with.
First thing i'd like you to try (if you haven't already) is removing your account and creating your account again from scratch.
If that doesn't seem to fix it check and see if your calender events and such are going to your exchange moto calender...not google (Google doesnt sync with the Exchange were moto does)
All else fails, touchdown isn't the "stock" app but by standards, it's very effiecent and works just as well as the stock!
Sorry i couldn't be of more help, but i would love to know if any of my 2 suggestions above solved your problem, or if you've already done both and it still fails!
Best of Luck!
Same problem here...
On Friday, June 24th, while I was traveling on business I discovered to my horror that all of the corporate calendar items on my Samsung Fascinate suddenly disappeared and will no longer sync with my Exchange server. Almost a month and a half later, and I still can't find a solution. My corporate emails and contacts are still coming through like always, but it just won't sync the calendar anymore, even though the spinning disc beside the calendar indicates that it is. I've re-booted the phone, double-checked all of the settings, and even uninstalled and reinstalled the link to my Exchange, but always the same result: I can get my email and contacts, but not my calendar.
After all of my DIY ideas failed, I called Samsung's toll-free customer support number, and to her credit, the representative was very friendly and personable, but honestly, she was not very knowledgeable. I explained to her that my Fascinate suddenly lost all of my work calendar data and won't re-sync, even though my contacts and emails are still coming through. Her first question was what operating system I was running on my desktop at work. I told her that I'm running Microsoft XP, but I felt that it was necessary at that point to clarify that I don't sync my Fascinate to my desktop computer-- it syncs to my account on my employer's Microsoft Exchange, so my data gets pushed to my Fascinate through the Exchange server 24/7, even when my desktop computer is shut down. It took a little more explaining before she finally grasped it, but in the end, she agreed that the operating system was not relevant to my calendar sync issue. But then she asked me what version of Microsoft Outlook I'm running. Again, I was more than happy to give her the information that she requested (Outlook 2002 SP 3), but I felt compelled to explain yet again that the shell programs on my desktop doesn't matter, because my Fascinate syncs to Exchange (2003), and not to my desktop. I was respectful and patient, but unfortunately, there was simply no way to get her to comprehend that my desktop computer has nothing to do with the problem, and her parting advice before ending the call was that I must upgrade my Outlook to resolve the syncing issue. Face slap. When I told the IT director what she said, all he could do was laugh. I wish I could do the same. I'm very frustrated, because I really depend on my phone to manage my work calendar, and a few weeks ago, it worked perfectly for over six months. Like the OP says, none of the other Android/Fascinate who share my Exchange server are having syncing issues with their corporate calendars or other features.
When I went to a Verizon store, the rep listened to me, skeptically double-checked all of my settings, and then, stumped, suggested the nuclear option: reset the phone to the factory settings. I don't want to do that, for two reasons: one, it would take me days to reinstall all of my apps, data and media files, and two, I don't think that it would work anyway. According to others on the internet who have reported the same problem, even a replacement phone hasn't fixed the problem. So with that in mind, I again uninstalled my corporate account, and had the IT department delete my Exchange account as well. Later, we both re-established the account, and it still didn't work.
Finally, last night, the 2.2.2 update was pushed to my phone, and I thought, "Yes! At last, this could be the fix I've been waiting for!" But no such luck. Calendar still empty, and won't sync. I'm very disappointed. I need to access and manage my calendar while I'm on the go, so this is really affecting me. If anyone comes across the solution, PLEASE post. Thanks.
GQMoneySmooth,
I we must have been talking to the same reps at VZ. They could not get their mind around syncing directly with exchange.
I still have not found resolution to this problem either. I have even been lucky enough to have VZ replace my phone with another fascinate. Still the same problem.
I have installed Touchdown as means of getting my calendar info. It works but I HATE it.
I came really close to rooting and installing another ROM on my phone but I just don't have the time or energy to do this now. Minimally it IS functional...
Good luck and maybe someone smarter than us can figure out a way to get the native calendar working!

Exchange Calendar help

I work for a government organization that uses android phones to sync with exchange. I currently have a customer with a Thunderbolt who has synced the mail, contacts, and calendar to exchange. The issue I'm having trouble resolving is that current month appointments sync fine, however anything older than a month, will only show reoccurring appointments. The customer claims they were there before, however I cannot confirm this. Anyone know of issues with exchange and this phone that would cause this problem. I'm an avid android user myself, however I'm not familiar with all the issues related to this phone.

We've used HTC THunderbolt and HTC Droid Incredible 2 phones with exchange 2003 and 2010. It seems that there's a couple serious bugs in HTC's implementation of their calendar/task sync. The main problem we see is that appointments and tasks don't get updated once they're initially synced.
I've spoken to HTC (who is useless) and VZ doesn't seem to understand the issue. Frustrating.
THe touchdown application works, but I personally find it to be clunky.
Sorry that I don't have better news for you. Please keep this thread updated should you find a solution!!
The sync itself seems to work fine, it will update the calendar with new appointments via push messages. The problem is though old appointments drop unless they are reoccurring. Using a third part app from the market may not necessarily work for our customers since their accounts are business accounts, that the organization pays for.

Good to hear that sync is working better for you than it is for us. I didn't mean to imply that you should use a third party service. I'm suggesting sticking with exchange but using Touchdown on the handheld to get the calendar items.
From memory, I think there might be a setting on the Thunderbolt to specify how long in the past calendar items show for. I think it's under sync settings (but I don't have a device to check it on).
I saw a setting for mailbox retention but not for the calendar. Touchdown would be fine except its a payed app. The free version is only a 30 day trial. I tried the normal remove and re-add account, this works 99% of the time on other android phones, but no joy. I have a feeling there is something in Android that limits the amount of past appointments, I just can't find any documentation on it.

[Q] Exchange email stops working

Hi Guys,
Since about a week ago (XXLPH firmware), my Exchange email stopped working.
Just says Connection Error all the time.
I can wipe the email settings, then enter them again, it will connect and start downloading mail, then stops and says connection error.
My Transformer is fine with all the same settings.
I upgraded the software to XXLPQ, did a full wipe and Factory Reset and still the same.
Any ideas please?
Thanks.
Faced the same problem, reverted back to GB all is well...
Tried lot of things but didn't work with ICS using Samsung email client, although Maildroid was working fine.
Same here, but only with my work account (Exchange 2010) - works fine with my (hosted) personal Exchange account (which is on Exchange 2007 AFAIK).
It's been this way with all ICS leaks. Yesterday I thought I got it working by adding the accounts the other way around, but today I'm getting connection error again. I think it's got something to do with the Device Administrator setting, because I never get that prompt for the second account I add, whereas I'm pretty sure I did on GB.
Using Enhanced Email in the meantime which works fine, but the Samsung client has some great features

I too have the same issue - Connecting to the Exchange Server at work (Exchange 2007), I have no issue. The Exchange Server at home (2010) continually shows up with "Connection Error". XXLPH installed here too.
Me too
Been driving me crazy. I agree it seems to be about the RSA device permissions. I think I'll have to go back to GB. Dammit, I wiped everything and have wasted all of today on this ...

They say replying to yourself is the first sign of madness ...
But I wonder if Samsung will fix this before pushing out the official UK update next week.
Hmmm ... I'm surprised more people haven't reported this.
Same here. Updated yesterday to XXLPQ and have had the Connection Error ever since...

I sent a link to this thread to Samsung Support, let's see what happens...
I've been looking into this (and learning a lot about EAS at the same time) - and have narrowed it down to XXLPH not liking the security policies contained within the Exchange ActiveSync Mailbox Policy that is being used. trouble is, no amount of fiddling has given me a long term solution (I have got it to work for short periods of time though).
I suspect that installing an Exchange 2007 CAS in my infrastructure and pointing my Galaxy S II to that will provide a workaround - but that's hardly a long-term solution. If that works, then forcing the handset to connect using an older version of the ActiveSync protocol should also work. This may be a more achievable workaround if I can figure out how to do it!
it's also failing with gmail/google mail for apps added as an Exchange Activesync. when upgrading from GB, 1 of 2 of my gapps accounts stopped getting new mail. after a full wipe, both accounts now fail to fetch any mail or folders. logcat shows the error "Email:SecFeatureWrapper(6658): Was not initiated" while refreshing mails.
I'm having the exact same issues but for me they seem to be related to Hotmail (and it's Exchange 2003-like EAS protocol. The moment I add m.hotmail.com as an Exchange account, my other corporate and Office365 stop syncing.
The moment I remove the Hotmail account, all other Exchange accounts start working again. Very strange.
You guys added Exchange2003 or Hotmail mailboxes? I found this issue on nearly all SGS2 ICS build.. currently on LPQ.

Aha! That explains it. I couldn't figure out why everything was working tickety-boo this morning and then the Exchange (Work) stopped working. Must have been cause I added hotmail as an exchange server too.
Indeed that also explains why I thought it was working when I added the other account first - I guess it was in fact working up to the point where I added the second account ;-)

I only have Exchange 2003. It was working fine until about two weeks ago.
Trying K-9 mail now, Touchdown doesn't work either.
I've tried the exchange mail app from one of the ICS leaks. My main issue is the scheduled mail just not seem to work. For peak time I don't need push mail, only needs to check every 4 odd hours, but even though I've set it up like that it still keeps on pushing mail whenever a new email comes in.
Can anyone confirm that the email client works properly with only one account installed?
I would be happy enough to do that, and use the MS Hotmail dedicated app for my personal email if I knew it worked.
Anyone doing this?

No not even with one account.
Exchange 2010 Problem
I had this problem with an Exchange 2010 account when the email retrieval size was all works just fine on 100kb, no connection errors at all. Although Hotmail seems fine when email retrieval size is all.
I have used all ICS Beta and official ICS Versions. All Version have the Exchange Bug.

E-mail client (Exchange) connection error since ICS?

So my problem is simple.
When I upgraded to latest official ICS ROM (I had to use Odin) I have this connection error in the stock e-mail client.
I'm using an Exchange 2010 server, I've removed account, and added it again, it did sync and retrieve new e-mail for about an hour, but suddenly it stopped working. It keeps coming back with the connection error...
Can any-one please help me?

Ok,
It's already done syncing... yesterday (when the trouble started) it synced very slowly.. Let's see if it stays like this now...
hi,
have the same problem.
tried what you suggested, it ectually cleared the account and i had to re-enter and reset it up.
did not work, it synced some emails and then stopped with connection error
i use exchange 2003, samsung galaxy s2 ics 4.0.3
any suggestions ?
thank you
addition:
--------
bow, after a few hours it did sync, VERY slow and when reading the mail the sync back to mark as read either not done or will also take hours...
where is the problem ?
i can avoid thinking of going back to 2.3.6 as this version really sucks.. it has so many problems.
same here
Hello,
Same problem here, on Android 2.3.3 no exchange sync problem, after update ti 4.0.3 connection error ...
Samsung Galaxy S II (Black) - Android 4.0.3
So I haven't had any problems since my last post until now :S
About an hour ago it synced an SMS messages over 3G, when I came home, I received an e-mail on my Outlook client and tablet at the same time, so I kept looking to my Galaxy.... nothing!
It's not my exchange server (2010 SP2), everything, including my tablet on android 4.03 using the ASUS client work perfectly fine...
Using POP3 or IMAP is not an option, even not as a temp workaround... I really need the activesync :S
it's a "known" defect affecting some Exchange accounts (f.e. google mail's ActiveSync): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545986
there are some people that claim they could get it to work by changing some settings, but that only helps for some exchange servers. the ASOP 4.0.4 exchange service & mail client seems to work tho.

The last post on page 10 of that topic seems like a working solution... To bad i don't have the time to root my phone and try it atm...

Issues with Exchange and other syncing with ICS
After reading lots of post and trying to resolve issues I believe I have resolved my issues using pop & Exchange accounts.
Try the following:
1. Edit every email account to the lowest retrevial size for emails.
and leave whatever email accounts you have setup as is.
2. Turn your phone off, do not restart.
3. Hold down the home button and press the power on button, keeping the button held down until you are at the full menu screen or pin code for your sim.
4. The if phone doesnt refresh, go to email settings and refresh each individual email account. Mine did automatically.
Hope this helps all the poor suckers out there that have spent hours on their phone trying to resolve issues rather than being the guinea pigs Samsung has made of us!
Good luck & god bless.
Liz
This doesn't work either...
Samsung has to fix this very soon... Some people try to use this thing for business, and the exchange feature is one of the most important features imo... I have to have a fix soon becaus this is soo ... annoying
I guess I have a good temporary fix, by setting the retrieval size to headers only it seems to work fine....
I am having same problem on galaxy s2. Recently upgraded to 4.0.3.
It syncs sometimes with exchange 2010 but most of the times it gives error as
'Connection error '. I have tried everything that you guys suggested. Nothing seems to work.
please help!!
Hope it help to solve
Changing the maximum email size to '100KB' from 'All' also solved my problem.
It Solves the problem for some time. When I reduced to size to Minimum, it worked for 3-4 days just fine. Altough 'Connection Error' Again started coming.
It stayed like that for couple of more days and exchange started working again.
Just to make it clear, our exchange is working fine since all others are getting updates.
Really strange!!!
Email client started working
Hi guys.
I updated to 4.0.4 on my skyrocket yesterday and faced this issue till today morning. Just while being in the email app.. go to the settings of FONT. It has not been selected and hence we do not see our mails.
Select any size.. and voila the mail appears.
