Razr Maxx Screen Swap/Replacement - Motorola Droid RAZR

Today I acquired a Razr Maxx, but the glass has a hairline fracture in it. I paid nothing for it but my time, as I received it in payment for helping out the local undertaker with some technology related stuff. My current phone is the standard Razr. Is the display assembly identical on both models? I want to switch to the Razr Maxx for obvious reasons, but before I go to the trouble of fully disassembling both phones, I want to know if the display assembly can be swapped between the two phones. Thanks in advance for your answers!

I would just send it in to motrola directly. For 107.75 plus shipping they will replace it for you. Easy.

That's all fine and good, but since I have a perfectly good Razr without any defects, I'd rather swap the screens between the two phones and spend nothing but the time it takes to do the swap. I'm not doing the swap until I get a sturdy case for the Razr Maxx (probably the Otterbox Defender), but before I get into it, I want to verify if the display assembly is identical between the two modules.
I know I could simply use the parts from the Maxx to essentially upgrade my working Razr, but my Razr has been troublesome for quite some time. Also, there's features of JB that I don't care for, and by switching to the Maxx I can once again be on ICS.

Hey, I have done this swap a few times with my own phones so you're good to go. I'm down to one good screen out of 4 right now, lol

Thanks! That's what I wanted to hear. The last thing I wanted to do was tear down both phones, and find out the tabs on the display assemblies were different.

The only difference I noticed was the frame around the battery, the battery itself, and the back cover (obviously)...otherwise all the parts are the same. I even took my regular Razr and swapped the parts out of a bad esn Maxx to it. The reps at Verizon were amazed, smh

Maxx OR something else??

Ok, I have a buddy that works at Verizon and they have an offer to upgrade your phone to 4G even if you still have time on your old phone contract. I take it they're trying to get people to move up to 4G.
Whatever the case, my wife's Dinc2 bricked on her and needs a replacement, Should fork over the the 199 for a Maxx? She basically wants the battery time (don't we all?) Im not a fan of Motorola phones, but the Maxx does have the best battery life out there.
What do you guys think??
I have a moto atrix and looove it. Its been great to me.
But the reason. I would NEVER get a razor is because it has a built in battery. You cant pull it if something freezes or if you get a bootloop. Too scary for me.
I also work at a rogers store and we've seen about 7 or 8 of these come back with hairline cracks in the screen, from either a really small.fall, or literally NOTHING at all.
Personally I'd steer clear, and I'm a moto fan!!

Moto designed the phone knowing that it might freeze. Holding volume down and power resets it. You can swap the battery really easy. Not like on iPhone. I can admit that even though it has gorilla glass cracks can happen and often on this phone. But the razr maxx is one of the best Android phones out there. I would strongly suggest maxx.

I went from the Incredible 2 to a Maxx. I don't regret it Its super durable, battery is just amazing. In the unlikely event it freezes, holding the power and volume up (or down I can't remember) will restart it. It worked for me.
tl;dr : Get the Maxx you won't regret it

I love my maxx...I used to have the original Razr and probably would be using it still if I didn't get a chance to pick up this maxx for cheap. Battery life is top notch on it, especially if she doesn't use it much she will love it. By far this is the most stable android phone I've ever used. Haven't had a problem with slows downs or freeze ups and I'm still rolling the stock GB OS, once ICS comes out officially it will be even better.
I say go for it, my wife wasn't at all interested in the Razr til I got her one and now she loves it. Sound quality on it is great...
motorola voice quality on some of their models (the RAZR & Defy are two of them) blows everything else away. if you care about voice quality, RAZR is the one to get. Atrix and iPhone 4 are almost, but not quite as good for voice. LG makes one decent phone for voice but i can't remember the model no. right now. Samsung phones are HORRIBLE for voice, stay far away if you like to use phones as phones.
I left the gnex for the maxx, no regrets here. Great phone. ICS real soon. Don't worry about the non removable battery, its not an issue. Hard resets (simulated battery pull) can be done as stated above.
via Razr MAXX
Love my maxx. Don't fall for the hype of it not being good or just about the battery. Go to your local store and just play w one. I am running an ics leak on mine and if its any inclination of how official will be then the RAZR maxx w ics is going to be one of the top phones. Battery life is obviously the selling point...but there are so many more great points about this phone. I have never had a freeze or a restart on gbread on 2 different ics leaks.
Ya I've never had a freeze on the stock OS, plus my wife has never complained about any problems

Hmm, thats an interesting video but let me tell you something that if you drop your phone into the water, be it any phone, a normal person cannot do it in a techy way like shown in the video and i m sure your wife would not like it, taking apart the parts of any phone to avoid damage due to water. the changes of dropping the phone into the water are minimal unless we dont care. If you really want her to be happy with any phone in the market then it is only MAXX. I have been using razr and i m in love with it to the core. Its slick, very powerful, the best beautiful design phone in the market ever made after original razr and THE DEADLY BATTERY LIFE. That video is actually for those who wants to play with their phone. And with ICS on this, it would be icing the cake. She well love it, buy it. You will not regret it.

The points in this video are only relevant if you are a guy who takes your phone apart to repair. For 99% of smartphone users, the points made in this video are irrelevant. If you have an extended warrantee; phones are not repaired. They are replaced.

I had it get real hot and glitch up once when I was using google NAV screen on for over an hour, had to turn the screen off let it cool and then power cycle it, but then again that was 3 weeks after I got my phone and my phone hadn't been shut off since I got it, now I make it a rule to "power cycle" my phone every other charge and I haven't had a problem since.
At this point, I would wait. The next two months should see some interesting options.
Maxx is tops though for now, if can not. If waiting for the assumed Razr HD, that will probably be end of summer.

Well i am wondering if i should wait or go ahead and get this maxx? Hearing they are going to try to get us ones that are grandfathered in to the unlimited plans to get us out with the upgrade at discounted prices makes me want to go ahead now so i can get locked in. I just hate that their is not many dev support for the maxx due to the locked boot loader. I like the dev support for the Nexus but don't want to take the gamble with the reception issues and data loss issues.
Get the RAZR Maxx no question about it.
I think the dev support will get better once we get ICS officially and dig into bit and get somewhere

No, the points in this video are for anyone interested in build quality and design. This phone was DESIGNED to be unrepairable. It was meant to be tossed and replaced, yet its one of the most expensive phones going. And MOST people (or at least I thought) here on xda were interested in modifying their phones, whether its, rooting, custom firmware etc... and the guy in the video is an elite xda member who knows these phones inside and out, programming, hardware, tthe works. Plus I work at a rogers store, have only been there since January, and have had 7 of them come back with cracked screens. And we've probably only sold about 15. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUUUGE motor fan. But the lockind down of boot loaders, and phones like the razor, I'm slowly, and sadly, losing faith.

[Q] Battery Kit?

Hi, ive recently purchased a razr, and my only gripe is the internal battery. I dont like the feeling that my device will only last as long as the battery. So im wondering if the maxx conversion kit actually works and how easy it is to install. Also i am wondering if the battery cant be easily taken out with the right tools to perform a hard boot.

If you bought it within the past 30 days from Verizon, take it back and get a Maxx instead. Save yourself the grief. Also, if you do the conversion to a Maxx you void your warranty so tread lightly (this is why I suggested exchanging your phone first).
As a side note, any cell phone works that way for without batteries we cannot use portable electronics.
I got my phone second hand, so im wondering if the warranty is still applicable, also what i mean is that other phones have replaceable batteries, so the phones can be used for years, but if my droid razrs battery breaks, then im screwed .

well u cud replace the battery prob by taking it to some phone repair shop.. another alternative is to purchase external battery pack..
Would it not also be easier to sell your RAZR on eBay for as much as you can and take the money that you would spend on the battery kit and the money made on the RAZR and buy a RAZR Maxx. They should equate to about the same and require less work on your part.

Yes, it obviously *works*, it's simply a different battery. It's not difficult to install (watch the video), but it does take some basic skill and ability. There's a bunch of threads on this site w/ links to suppliers, you will find installation videos there.

Yes, the battery can be taken out for a hard boot - but no, not even close to what can be considered "easy".

Droid Razr to Droid Razr Maxx conversion

I thought I would share my experience, share some photos and answer the questions that some people might have here.
Ask me anything about his conversion.
I got razr maxx from ebay for $155. I did not have necessary tools to complete the conversion so I had to wait couple days before I got them. I went to http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-motorola-droid-razr-maxx/6346471?seq=2&tag=siu-container;thumbnail-view-selector to see the guide on how to deal with the internal frame. The whole process took me like 30-45 minutes. The steps in the web site was clear on how to take it a part. I followed the same steps but backwards to put it back.
There are 2 things that you need to be careful about. The piece of plastic which covers the top center screw(which has HD 1080p logo) and the battery connector which comes out of battery really easy. You have to unscrew the screws on the bottom to take the battery out. The connector stays with the battery.
I dreamed about this conversion for couple of months now. now it is all done and working like a charm!!!
Thanks for creating this thread
I bought a Droid razr off of ebay and I'm looking to upgrade it! Is the process any different for a Rogers (GSM) RAZR??

I don't know exactly rogers GSM but I tend to believe that internally razrs are identical. Sine DROID RAZR maxx battery will fit RAZR GSM battery.

[Q] Wife's Rezzie stolen -- Seeking suggestions for replacement

All --
My wife's Rezzie got stolen the other night, and we need to get another phone this weekend. Don't want to spend more than $199 (we'll utilize an upgrade). That limits us to:
Samsung S III
Moto Razr HD
LG Spectrum 2
Moto Razr M
And, of course, another Rezzie for $50. Low cost is a factor, but we don't want to get stuck with older technology, either. We do root our phones, which may rule out the Spectrum 2 -- I can't seem to find any root or dev support for the phone. The HTC DNA looks terrific, but is really big and will need a few weeks to be rooted.
Open to suggestions on which way we ought to go.
Much appreciated...
How about the incrediable 4g, they just now got root

I'd say the DNA if you want another HTC phone. Even though root isn't possible right now, patience will prevail with this phone. I'm not a fan of Motorola and usually feel the same about Samsung, but the s3 is just too damn sexy.
So my vote is DNA or S3.
BTW, have you tried using Plan B to find your wife's phone?

Realistically speaking, its never going to be a rooted phone since its your wife's's phone. I would say either the razr M because its DURABLE or the S3 due to its "wow" factor. But if your tight on money, why not another rezound?
If it was my girlfriend, I would let her play with the phones at the store and let her decide.

I would go with the htc DNA, and I would either put plan b or avast antivirus with anti theft on it so I could retrieve my phone or at least render it useless to the losers that stole it.

Do you know his wife or are you just making a sexist presumption about all women?
I would stick with a phone that has a removable battery and an SD card slot since it seems that makes all this rooting etc. easier and also because you can put in a 64gb card and have tons of music and podcasts on it. I had to replace my Rezzy without an upgrade option or insurance or warranty (cracked screen) and opted for buying a used Rez. I know I'll be happy with this for a few more years, but I don't have that need to always have the latest technology, especially when it's already so good on phones, and I would have lost my unlimited plan. I did play with the GS3 and it's pretty nice. I prefer an LCD screen though as I'm planning on keeping my phone for a while and I've read about the Super Amoled screen degrading over time.
So also depends on how long she might be keeping the phone and if you will be losing an unlimited plan as well.

The DNA has root.
Doesn't have S-Off.
As for new phones, removable batteries and sd card slots will be rare.
Also, put avast on your phones.
Went with a SGIII
Thanks all for the suggestions. We had to get a phone quickly, since we'd frozen my wife's line as soon as we realized the phone was stolen and not lost. Both of us needed our phones for business, and we were about to head out of town.
That took the DNA off the table right there. It wouldn't be available until after we left, and VZW insists on shipping Web orders directly to our house. No one by our names there to sign for it until next week (we have a house sitter). Plus the DNA is just too big.
Also looked at the Razr M (screen too small) and the Razr HD (screen the same size as the Rezzie, but phone much larger). The SGIII is only marginally larger, but the screen is much bigger -- easier for our middle aged eyes.
The local store had the Rezzie in stock, but they wanted $200 for it. Online, it's $50, but the same delivery problem would be there that we'd have for the DNA. Not worth that much money for a year-old phone.
No devs support the Spectrum 2. Plus it's huge. No go.
In terms of features and newest technology for the price, that left us with the SGIII. So far so good. It has its quirks, and we swapped out the launcher immediately. But the initial overall impression is good.

[Q] Can i replace the Razr Maxx mainboard with a Razr XT910 mainboard?

Long story short, my razr maxx is bricked bcuz i didn't unlock the bootloader before flashing CWM and then it all went to hell.
I researched for a fix for days, couldn't find a soft-fix neither a hard-fix, my last approach to solve this situation is to replace the mainboard of my Razr Maxx.
The problem is i can't find replacement parts that were specifically made for the Razr Maxx, when i search for it everything that pops up refers to the Razr XT910.
My guess is that they are exactly the same except for the battery size, meaning that i could indeed use the mainboard of a Razr XT910 to replace the mainboard of the Razr MAXX, but i'm not sure if it will work, and i really need to be sure before spending money, cuz if it doesn't work it would be like ripping money. Could anyone assure me that it will work or at least give me some guidelines?
Thanks in advance
As far as I know, yes, they are exactly the same phone except for the battery. I don't see why it would cause any problems, but again, I'm just making an assumption like you are. Sorry for not having any proof, but at least the thread will get bumped
