Ok I have been waiting to buy a Tablet, dont want to get back into the fruit and nut area again. But I was planning on buying a Xoom as I am not sure Samsung will support this device any better than they did my original Galaxy phone. Xoom still doesnt have a working SD card bay from what I can glean from the internet (doesnt seem to be reported as an issue by most reviews) and its all just finger pointing over that issue w/no resolution clearly in sight. What current issues if any should I be aware of looking at (cant believe I am even considering it) buying a Tab 10.1. I also looked at the Transformer but it seems to have issues with flash. I cant believe so many seemingly important issues on those 2 arent covered more.
A Google I/O, multiple manufacturers (including Samsung) talked about maintaining devices with updates for 18 months after release, assuming the hardware would support those updates. I don't think you will have to worry about the Tab staying up-to-date. There is the question looming of whether or not Touchwiz will be an optional addition, and if you choose not to apply it will you be able to receive future updates. That is still unclear. But hardware-wise, the Tab is on par with everything else out there. The only question you have to ask yourself is do you favor form or function? If you don't need SD or HDMI support (on board without accessories) then get the Tab. If those things are necessities, go with something else. The Tab is the lightest and thinnest on the market, which makes it very covetable by those looking for something portable. The Xoom and Transformer are both considerably thicker and heavier.
Personally, I don't need SD support, and would much rather have something lightweight and thin.
SD support is important to me so that leaves me worried about the Xoom. I have lots of media I keep on my phone, kids videos for them, audiobooks, movies for when I am stuck in airplanes, e-books. I also was just told that the Tab doesnt support USB properly is that correct? I mean WTF?? Is that true?? Also will I be able to use Netflix on this thing? How does it handle streaming media?
The US-version of the Xoom is a GED (Google Experience Device), which means it gets HC updates first. It also means that if HC doesn't have SD support, then the Xoom won't, either. 3.2 is reportedly rolling out this month for it.
Xoom custom ROM already has SD support a while ago. Non-US versions (being rolled out) will also have SD support along with 3.1 update.
There are pluses and minuses to every Tegra 2 tablet out here. Xoom has pure Android, GT has TouchWiz. Xoom has ports, GT is lighter. Xoom is cheaper, GT has better screen, etc etc.
The main minus for all of them is that Honeycomb itself isn't quite ready and still has rough edges. And there aren't many tab-specific apps (no NetFlix yet).
There isn't a working Netflix app for any Honeycomb tablet at the moment... I would have to think that will change soon thought. As far as USB connectivity, I'm not sure what you mean? There is a USB adapter that is currently backordered, but as soon as that is available you will be able to hook up flash drives, external hard drives, etc.
Samsung doesn't have ports but there is an adapter you can buy for $20 (or maybe less if you search around) that will let you add USB functionality and/or an SD slot.
It streams just fine from what I can tell, but I am not a big streamer. I'm more of a business guy on the move who wants something that boots up quickly, is light and thin and can last a long time for web surfing, emailing and some light gaming as well.
I had a Xoom, and I now have a Galaxy Tab, and the Tab is a better machine. It's lighter and has a much crisper display, but truth be told, Honeycomb isn't ready for prime time yet. It's manageable, not like it's falling apart or anything, but it's got its quirks and crashes.
If you want something now and ports are important to you, and you don't want to spend extra for the adapters, then the Transformer, or even the just about-to-be-released Toshiba Thrive (which also has a replaceable battery) may be better for you. Both are MUCH thicker and heavier, though.
Good luck.
I really looked at the Transformer but the Flash issues to me seems like a hardware issue. I have 2 Asus laptops and have no qualms with any of there products I have bought. I didnt know about the Toshiba thanks for the tip but how can it offer USB and SD card capability if its on Android 3.1, isnt it something in Android thats not supporting these now from what I understand?
You can turn on the hotspot function of your smartphone and stream/copy stuff from there. They all have SD-Cards If you are close to a WLAN hotspot you have access to, you can usa your router or a NAS system to stream from home over the internet.
Also small USB HDDs will work with an adapter. For example the Samsung S1 mini (size of a credit card) or maybe the S2 portable. Usually external drives need an y-cable and 2 USB slots because of the power consumption, but those models run from 1 USB.
But still, it would be easier if it had an sd slot.

I think it's just a hardware compatibility issue with the Xoom, to be honest with you. The other tablets work just fine. Don't know what kind of stuff Motorola left out in order to release the Xoom early but apparently it's not an easy fix.
hi all,
im after some of your advice as to the best tablet, im going to ask in the Xoom and Transformer forums as well, but id like your opinions on what is the best tablet to buy, obviously you guys are using the Galaxy 10.1 already, and are happily modding the hell out of them, so you may have experience with the others as well.
i am trying to find somewhere which has all 3 which i can look at side by side, but in the UK im pretty much left with Pc world/Currys.. so i thought id do the next best thing and talk to people who have/use them.
i have narrowed my choices to;
Motorola Xoom,
Asus Transformer
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
if possible can you let me know what your experiences are like with any of them.
Thanks All.
I have GT10.1 and Xoom. I don't like the design of the Transformer. So if i had to choose one of them then i would choose GT10.1.
If you can wait a little (two months?), then it seems that there are some interesting tablets coming soon...
Just get the SGT10.1 and enjoy your life out of it.And dont forget to update it to TW.
As current owners of two (Asus & Samsung) & previous owner (Xoom). I would say it's between Asus & Samsung. I ruled out Xoom because of the screen.
Asus is good if you get the dock with the tablet. My mom loves her Asus & she uses both.
I would get the Galaxy Tab due to the awesome screen & light weight. I thought I couldn't live w/o the MicroSD but I have. I use File Expert to transfer files via FTP or use the USB adaptor to a MicroSD.
All in all, I would recommend the Galaxy Tab if you don't need all the ports & a dock. If you need ports & a portable KB, then the Asus would be good for you. Though, you could always get a BT keyboard (I don't like Samsung KB dock & I have the Logitech BT KB for Android).
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
They are all different. I had and sold a xoom and and Iconia (and a few others). If you need ports, get the iconia or the transformer. If you want to hold it in one hand get the GT10. There's a bunch of other differences, but for me the big difference comes from the way I use it; hence I can live without the ports so that I can have something that I can carry around the house and use with one hand. For all other stuff I use my laptop.
If you have to buy now, then as said above it's a toss up between the Tab and the Transformer.
If you're looking at wi-fi only and can't live without expandable memory or an in-built HDMI connection then you have to go for the Transformer.
Otherwise, get the Tab.
However, if I were you, I'd hold off and get something with a better CPU.
I never understand the better CPU comments in tablet forums. It's not a desktop computer.
Anyways, the only advice I can give you is the same advice I would give someone buying a HDTV. You have to go into the store and just play around with all the tablets and one of them will just call your name. As said above the only difference is if you need ports. I personally love the screen of the tab 10.1 and its thinness and weight. The form factor is what sold me.

cheers guys, im planning to visiting a few shops over the weekend to have a fiddle and sus out the best option, though im tempted to wait and see what the next batch of tablets has to offer.
....I think the answer to that is a resounding NO, I was willing to be patience and wait for upgrades etc to fix probs but having just upgraded to ICS Im very disappointed.
No fixes for various bugs (for me primarily wifi connection), and now I find my gps is not working for some reason, the device nearly went out of the car window yesterday when i was stuck on the A13 with no gps, but then I thought about littering .
Together with the car charging problems (had To buy an Inverter, more money), no hdmi socket no perifials, Car bracket etc, battery life, its not adding up to a good deal.
I originally bought a Ipad on the recomodations of a salesman and assurances that flash would work with it (yea right), so that went back in favour of the 'S', but what next, do I leave it at home and cut my losses (wad of dough).
Its seems that despite advances in technology we are always being used as guinepigs for devices that eventually end up on the scrap heap and never seem to last until the device is broken beyond repair but are dumped by the manufactorer in favour of another useless device, witness my Ipaq stopped supporting Windows, My Dell Streak mini 5 cant even get spares for them anymore, I could go on.
And we seem to accept it without protest almost as if its expected that we lay out loads of dosh for a inferior product, imaging the outcry if we bought cars (or other products) on the same basis, 'oh bear with us, sir, you will be able to drive from A to B as soon as we have sorted out the engin bugs'.
anyway sorry about the rant, Im still simmering from the A13 incident,
Well..
there is a reason why the most tablets still not 100% work like they should be,
Because the tablets like they are now are just still too new,
Better tabs are coming and more abillities are coming too, and then our
problems maby be fixed, Except then there are other problems because there are new things to do with a tablet and ofcourse a higher change to get problems.
I'm sorry to learn that you're upset with your tablet, maybe a tablet is not for you?
Would I buy the s again? Yes. I replaced a Windows Vista Laptop which finally died with my tablet S.
I took a long hard think about what I actually used my laptop for before purchase. Mainly sofa surfing, emails Facebook etc.More importantly it was to have this ability on the move. The small amount of application work could be relegated to my old desktop. I help run another website which has some flash parts so I that meant could not get an i-pad, besides I hate i-tunes.
With the S I'm now able to control my hifi with one device, manage DNLA media on my server, check up on emails and social networking and sofa surf all from one little lightweight and highly portable device. Chuck in free SatNav with Navfree also.
Most android devices could do all this to a certain extent however the IR and playstation integration made the Sony the only choice for me. I also find the screen a higher quality and the shape nicer to use.
Minor bugbears:
Direct communication with SD card socket - ICS fixes this
Lack of Sky go / MS Silverlight - will probably happen in the end
Missing MS Excel - some partial success with apps but would really like a proper MS version.
Would like it to be a bit nippier
Nice said!
Now thats what you call a nice short review. +1
To be honest, it seems like most of those problems could have been avoided with just a little research before you bought. Obviously, different tablets suit different people and if you wanted HDMI-out, lots of weird peripherals and a car bracket, you should've bought a Toshiba Thrive or a Samsung Galaxy Tab.
The Sony's features and advertised purpose are well-known and it is obviously meant to be a media device, and it excels at that. I'm not sure why your battery is not good, but mine far outlasts my iPad's. As for peripherals, as far as I'm concerned, if it'
s got mini-USB which can be turned into full-size USB with a short cable, thats all the peripherals I'm ever going to need.
I respect your opinion and your choice and for the record I don't have any WiFi problems and haven't upgraded to ICS (waiting for official) so I can't comment on that.
However, it seems as if many of your criticisms (including those of other disappointed Tablet S owners) could've been solved by a tiny bit of Internet research and some forethought about your buying choices.
In short, it seems harsh to blame the tool, if you're using the wrong tool for the job that you wanted
Sorry for the rant, but I love mine and am often mystified by these disappointed stories.
I have to agree with the above! I love mine because I did a lot of research before I bought it and realised the sony was the one for me. Does the iPad have hdmi out? I don't know I don't buy into all the apple crap. But if it doesn't then why bring it up. Like said earlier, if that's what you were after there's plenty of devices on the market that could have fulfilled your needs.

-GPS problem is more of an Android problem, the SGS Tab and most phones have crappy GPS as well.
-The wifi issue is hardly a bother, come on. The tablet S literally takes a second to reconnect when you open up the display. It's really quick. How much do you really NEED wifi when the screen is off? Would it be great? Yes, but is it a dealbreaker? hardly not.
-I have no idea what you are talking about about peripherals. The tablet has a full sized SD card slot. I cant think of any other tablet which does. The MicroUSB does the job for connecting as well.
-Battery life has been good for me, even better than the iPad 2.
People can whine and complain all they want, but at the end of the day it is your fault for not researching more about a tablet that would suit your needs. You can't whine about the tablet not having an HDMI slot if you had a choice to choose one that did. Sony never lied and never stated that there was an HDMI slot. Battery life has never been a problem for most people, even the reviewers say the battery life is great. I agree, though, that the charger is retarded.
That said, it seems that those who complain about the Tablet S are expecting too much from the tablet. Sony have been very upfront about what it can and cannot do, and reviews have put this in the top 5 tablets for a reason. It's easy to criticize what something doesn't have, but people forget the good things about a device (SD card slot, great screen, universal remote, playstation etc.)
I am very happy for my table S and would definitely bye it again.
I have actually thought of buing a second as this one is so heavily in use.
I hated mine for the first couple months. Never had any probs with the hardware (nor any wifi/battery issues). For me it was just a crappy slow as firmware. I said on here once that it would all be fixable with root access.
Fast forward to present with me strappin' a rooted ICS loaded Sony Tab and you're looking at one happy camper . I've even adjusted to the fact I stuffed the screen a little when it slid off my car bonnet.
Does everything I want it too and the only time I turn on a laptop anymore is use the all in one tool on it .
Yes. Yes I would.

Umm, well. Yes I would, and yes I did.
I have several tablets, a couple of Sony Tablet S's (16 & 32gb) a Samsung Galaxy 10.1, an ASUS TF101, and a couple of Kindle Fires (rooted and totally recreated as fine little tablets in their own right.) I've also had two iPads in the past, a v1, then v2 (those both went to the niece & nephew for Xmas, total kiddie ware going no-where.)
So, guess which one goes with me in the car and on the plane? Easy, the 32gb Sony. I throw the poor thing around like a paperback book, and it definitely takes a licking. Never complains a bit and still looks new. (Think airport check-ins, X-ray bins, getting banged around on plane tray tables & overhead compartments, etc.) Battery life is xlnt, the display is bright, saturated & Sony sharp, reading Kindle books is hand-natural specific, and... I can load my 64gb SDXC card with just about anything and everything.
Other than the Kindle Fires, (Kinder Panzers?) all of the other tablets I have either had (or have now,) are FRAGILE.
OK: The universal remote. I use the Sony S for everything in the house, especially the WD Lives... this thing is a godsend compared to the little piece of crap they give you for a remote! That Sony Tablet S remote feature sets up easy and remembers forever.
Also, I use either my HTC Desire or Desire HD to connect to the Internet, apply the wifi hotspot, then connect the Sony S to that. Skype calls for free. Wait, somebody say free? Internet and hands free International calls. Easy.
I could go on here, but there's plenty more.
Again, yes I would buy it again, and yes, I already did.

I have to agree with you. I mean, I like my tablet s, but I think I'm pretty tired of crappy problems/errors. I have an xperia x10i, and also there, other problems. This mainly happen because we have many different models and hw to be adapted to the operative system (this doesn't happen for ipad, just because they have a few hw models and just one corporate workin on sw). Sony produces beautiful machines and great hardware, but they always lack on software, don't know why.
Hi, I've currently been looking for a replacement to my Galaxy S (had it 16 months now) which is beginning to creak a bit due to its lack of RAM. Anyway, that aside it's still a great phone barring the recent official update but switching from Touchwiz to GoLauncher solved the issues.
Anyway, I saw this deal for the Atrix and lapdock. Basically want to know if it's worth it; I am looking at this from the perspective of a consumer who uses the smartphone casually. I was hoping to use the lapdock as a sort of netbook; browsing the net and playing videos, mainly on the couch or when I'm mobile/travelling).
So I guess the real questions are;
1) With Quad Cores becoming more prevalent this year, would it be prudent to get the Atrix at this price?
2) Has the lapdock had much software updates? I mean it uses firefox which I've abandoned on desktop in favour of Chrome. Also, issue reviews said that the browser was fairly sluggish.
Originally I was thinking of getting a cheap 7in Tablet (like the soon to be out Tab 2 7.0) and I know that they're not directly comparable to this lapdock (which doesn't have touch screen and no multitouch on its pad etc) but what are your opinions?
it really depends on how much work you want to put into it. out of the box it's a little boring and slow, but with for example nottachtrix + gentop2 it's pretty amazing. we have high hopes of getting an official ICS in q3 (i believe is the consensus) should that happen atrix will be viable for another year at least. as of now, i don't think webtop has ever been updated by moto. you need to rely on the community devs for upgrades and honestly these guys have come through in ways the official corp dev team never could.
example: unlocked bootloader =)
yeah, like the previous poster said, that's a little steep tho
Well, you have to bear in mind with British prices we ALWAYS get ripped off. Fact is the Atrix is still 300 pounds or more from most websites/stores so the fact that this comes with the lapdock actually makes it a "cheap" deal.
I will stress though that I intend to use the phone and dock for media consumption, I don't really need it to do work and hence I wanted to know if anyone else has had it for similar reasons.
Also in the UK a Galaxy S2 still commands about £380 so the Atrix would be 75% of its price or there abouts; I'm sort of leaning towards it but now that I realise that it doesn't have a webcam I think I'll put my money to a new phone (possibly a Nexus or the Note) as I want to use Skype to do video call. I still can't believe Motorola originally wanted to charge nearly 300 pounds for the lapdock... it's a screen with a battery, keyboard and two usb ports. You can get a netbook and charge for that... what were they thinking?
Great phone, don't count on the lapdock
Yo from London.
I've been using my Atrix (bought in US) back in Blighty for a year and its a great device. The way I think about it is this: Last year's high end phones effectively become this year's mid-range phones. So the Atrix is basically equivalent to a new mid-range (say £200-250) phone. I think you'd tend to pay about £50 less than you'd pay for a newly release mid-range phone though given the Atrix is pretty low-profile, older device.
But I think as a phone you can't fault it. The Tegra 2 is still up to snap and if you slap on a brand new ROM (I have Neutrino based on CM7, its awesome) it feels like a brand new device. The BIG advantage it has over a mid-range phone though is the battery life - REM MOTO put a big-ass battery in here. Add in a properly tweaked third party ROM and this thing becomes an absolute battle tank as regards lastability. Do not underestimate this!
The downside is the Atrix is probably coming to the end of its support life re: OS updates. As a rule of thumb you'd expect an android device to get the next one major OS update (Atrix has actually done OK as its gotten both Gingerbread and it'll get ICS - this was because it came at the tail end of the Froyo era). Getting a new mid-range phone means you should be OK for Jellybean but there is zero chance you'll get that on Atrix. It's up to you as to whether this is an issue. TBH I always skin with ADW Launcher EX so I'm pretty ambivalent as to the OS version. There is an argument that new OS updates haven't added anything meaningful since Froyo brough Flash support (ironically the one key ICS-exclusive app - Chrome - actually takes this away). I don't think my world would end if I couldn't get Jellybean - but that's your call.
The last issue is the Lapdock. TBH don't go out assuming the world on this one. Its sluggish and if you want to use third-party ROMs based on CM7 that will break lapdock support (you can mirror HDMI /w keyboard+mouse fine on CM7 now but its a bit of a kludge). If you're buying Atrix particularly for the lapdock functionality (rather than as a bonus feature) I'd think twice. The wildcard here is that its rumours ICS will rehash the lapdock functionality and make it native Android a la Transformer Prime. That would make me reassess the lapdock - but atm its only an option.
My advice would be to get the Atrix now as a daily driver. Its a great phone - as I said an absolute battle-tank in everyday use. The current mid-range field doesn't have much to recommend it so I think you will come in quids ahead.
All the best
Jonathan
Interesting view points there. I was only going to get the lap dock because it's included at Handtec and Expansys which feature the lowest prices online (from a reputable retailer) for a new Atrix.
I see the lapdock as "bonus", something I can use on a couch when I just want to do some net browsing.
[UPDATE 08.06.12] Got a news:
There is a webstore listed the price as $29 of genuine leather case&bluetooth keyboard for Gtablet. But not includ shipping.any ideas?
Sorry.. Forgot the link.
Seems still on sale at electroniccrap.com but price difference.
More than 1 year of Gtablet available. Do you still keep it in your hand or instead of with other tablet pc?
Long live with me
Inside the hardware motherboard,
and outside touch screen, volume button, power button, charger connector
And a lot more
nope
but it is collecting dust nicely
I am actually just own the gtablet, after playing it for a few days, I kind of like it and think I will keep it for at least a year or two since there's already Ice Cream Sandwich available for the gtablet.

Amazing! actually,Gtablet is a nice advice if you dont mind of the size and weight.
Had mine for almost a year now and I actually don't use my laptop for anything except the occasional NVflash for the tablet when I change from bootloader to bootloader, thats when I am bored with the ROM that I am using. My poor baby has been through he'll and back and it has the hole on the back to prove it, but she still lives and runs like new.
Stays in garage as dedicated Pandora player. Occasional internet browsing.
I still use mine every day. I have to admit that it is getting harder since the newer roms don't support the usb and camera. I use mine with the keyboard to make it easier to type. I also read e-books on just about every night.

Yuppp
I still use mine but for fun. My kids use it for gaming and some educational games/videos. my wife uses it for Angry Birds lol. I installed the ICS by tjohnson and I found new love for this puppy all over again
I still use mine daily.
Same as some of the others -- I have re-soldered the Power connector (twice). It look pretty bad - a chunk missing from near the search button, and the back is very rough looking.
I almost bought a Toshiba Thrive the other day (Better screen - full set of full size connectors). It was reduced at BestBuy.
I think my G-Tablet is good enough for the immediate future, but at some point, I will find a deal similar to (better than) the deal on the Thrive, and I will go for it.
I use mine for business everyday for almost two years now. I have a 7" that I use in my car and for reading and quick email check... it boots much quicker and downloads mail much faster than HC 3.2 (2.3). I love it and don't need anything else right now for my daily business use. I rarely use my laptop anymore.

I don't know what USB problems you have ran in to, but all the latest ROMS support the USB keyboard. At lease all the one I have trued which is just about all the 1.2 based ROMS. Currently running ROMS listed in my signature have been working great for my GTab when it is in its case with built in USB keyboard. Now the camera however has issues with those ICE ROMS, but that's what my phone is for.
I still use mine almost everyday. It's an excellent travel mate. I had trouble with it a month ago with a rom I had placed on it. It kept freezing and rebooting. I also notice that the jack for the charger is getting loose. I just put ICS on it and I'm happy with it. It's like a new tablet. However, its time is limited. Like someone else mentioned in a previous post I am keeping my eye open for a good deal on a newer tablet. I want something thinner with a better screen. I may just spring for a Transformer Prime in a few months.
My G-Tab has been forgotten somewhere in the house for about a year now. After constantly trying with different ROM's I decided to stop wasting time. Every ROM has something I need that doesn't work. I use it to watch movies and I would have to convert my movies at low profile in order to view it. The viewing angle on the G-Tab is also very limited and I would have to tilt it at a weird angle to see it at best. I'll not buy anything from ViewSonic again. This company doesn't provide any software upgrade to their products.
I do appreciate all the people working on ROM for this device. However, even with your talent and dedication, it's still not perfect due to limited resource you have.
My stepson has G-harmony gingerbread on his, he uses it for gaming and web surfing. I just installed G-harmony ICS on mine and i use it for lots of stuff, email, web browsing, games, I read a lot of ebooks and I watch the occasional movie on it.
I agree with the comment about the horrible way Viewsonic has supported the gtablet but the dev community has done a great job in the company's place. I have been through most of Roebeet's Roms and I am now using TeamDRH's ICS. Work is being done on the drivers for the camera and mike so there is more life for this tablet. I'm not ready to retire mine and use it daily for web browsing, reading and a few other apps. I have the dock which is handy and also use a bluetooth keyboard with it when doing a lot of typing.

Same here. I'm still waiting for a ICS ROM with HDMI. Recently purchased a no-name 7-inch ICS tablet with HDMI running the Allwinner A10 processor. Very impressive video performance for a tablet less than $100. Still I'd like to use the G-Tablet in its dock with my wireless KB/touchpad to watch live streaming sports on TV. But without HDMI for the G-Tablet the whole setup just sits in an AV cabinet, waiting.

I'm a college student always on the go so my gtab is pretty much my laptop and my life lol. I have a nice screen protector and a stylish uscratchble surface on the back of my tablet. I am hoping my tablet will survive years to come because I don't have money for a new one..=/...But I would trade my tablet and the $60 hdmi stand any day for a nexus 7.. regardess of the extra like $25 I spent on the front and back cover.
My Gtab has been steady and working great for over a year. I dumped the tnt that it came with and used HC 3.03, works great. The only thing that I wish was that the Ram was upgradable. I will be trying ICS as soon as its a more stable/less buggy version comes out.
