I can get a Nook Color or Kindle Fire for christmas. But I can't decide which one to get! The fact that the kindle fire doesn't have a mirco sd card slot really bothers me. But once usb host is figured out this will no longer be a problem. I like that the Nook Color is alot father along in the terms of hacking and it has a mirco sd card slot. But the fire has a faster processor and its dual core. The fire will be able to run ics and idk if the nook color will be able to. Ugh! I can't decide. Please help me!
P.S. I plan on using this as a tablet, not as an ebook reader.

Both of them have ICS roms (in development). Here's a comparison: http://www.tabletmoz.com/tablets/kindle-fire/a-comparison-between-kindle-fire-vs-nook-color.html. You can see that the Kindle Fire is more suitable for the use as a "tablet" compared to the nook color.
If Nook Tablet was an option (it is not due to signed bootloader) then it would be a tough call. But Fire vs NC is easy: get the Fire.

I've made my decision! I will get the fire based on joeuser846's recommendation and and theonew's helpful article and recommendation. I realized that I can use dropbox to get around the micro sd card issue. I read that the 6.2.1 update breaks root. Will I still be able to install the android market without root? My sister has 6 months of amazon prime free then I was planing on installing cyanogenmod 7/9 on it. Do I need root to install these roms too?

All official updates break (remove) root. Instead, you could get the pre-rooted update here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402440 so you don't have to worry . Yes, you have to have a custom recovery (usually requiring root to be able to install it).
fire or nooky???
Dude if your gonna use it as a tab, why not just get a tablet...if it is size and the $200-$250 pricetag, than go with the 7" iconia A100 by acer. I just got one from best buy for $249 and I love it, and I think you can still get $100 off(the tablet, in store) if you sign up for a wifi hotspot through ver., at&t or sprint we went with sprint.
-downfall= not much development yet, but full android market and honeycomb 3.2 out the box
It is incredibly easy to strip the DRM off books purchased at the Kindle Store. You should check to see how easy it is to strip DRM from nook books, if you plan on purchasing books form them.
Stripping DRM
As a total beginner, can you tell me how?

I think this all depends on your needs, what you want to use it for?
Anyways, this "Kindle Fire VS Nook Tablet-Specs comparison" what listed as a chart in Aneesoft could take a read, might give you some ideas.

He said that he wanted to use it as a tablet and not an ebook reader.
NB.: He already made his decision.
Hello everyone,
I am trying to get all my school books on my nexus 10 and I am having a hard time finding any of the latest editions for the books. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good online ebook store. I have tried the Google Play store with no luck, has anyone used the kindle or nook apps and will they let you use the ebooks on the Nexus 10? Any advice would be greatly appericated and I am loving this tablet, such an upgrade from my Xoom.
Amazon seems to have a good selection of textbooks. Almost all of my textbooks this semester were available in Kindle format. I downloaded the Kindle app to make sure it works. It seems to work fine on the Nexus 10.
However, I don't think there is any way to sell back a Kindle book. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) That's why I ultimately decided on buying the physical copies this semester.
Is there any eBook store that "buys back" textbooks or let's you sell your copy to someone else?

Thanks for the advice when I get home from work I am going to try the kindle app.
The Kindle app works great and the book selection is huge. There are tons of ebook apps out there, but they dont have a book store built in usually, that is one of the main reasons I like the Kindle app. If you ahve ebooks from other places in MOBI or PDF format the Kindle app will also read those perfectly fine and you can select them just like any other book in your library. Just copy the book to your "kindle" folder on your internal storage.
Try B&N all the textbook ive gotten from then have been in PDF
and for reader app i have tried them all the best ones are Moon+ Reader Pro and Mantano Ebook Reader Premium
I use amazon. As you mentioned, no sell back. But for someone heading to professional school after undergrad, it's so much easier than having to lug the physical books around for the next few years. I've also found I can download certain textbooks for free in PDF format from various sites. Just search your textbook name and type "eBook" after it. I've literally saved hundreds over the past year this way.

Its nice to see fellow students on the forum! Kindle books do not have a buy back option, but you keep the electronic books on their cloud for as long as you have the account which is nice. They do,however, have some kindle textbooks available to rent for a lower price than purchasing it. I have also used Course smart to rent books before, but I have not tried it on the Nexus.

So I have the new nexus 7 now. But really want the larger screen. Because the Fire is locked with amazon, would the nexus still be the preferred tablet just because I can get the google play store on it?
Do you guys that use the HDX feel that it does all you need and you dont feel slighted because you cannot get to the app store of google?

I don't feel slighted because I side loaded most of what I use and like. It's an annoyance but it works. The screen is world's above nexus 7 2013 and the hardware is better but if you overclock and use cm the nexus 7 is close in performance. I hope for a working google play store every day or even better a custom Rom but I can easily get by like this. One thing I will say for fire OS though is I like the navigation bar better than stock vanilla android.
Obviously I do own both tablets and many others to boot so I have first hand experience with both.

So if I left it stock, I could still side load them? And I assume when you say you side load them, you copy the APK to the tablet and install it with the APK, correct?
How about books? Can I side load epubs and use Aldiko or something like that? And can you side load launchers? As you can see, I have never had one of these tablets from amazon, but love the hardware specs..
There is the LG Pad 8.3" sitting in the play store as a Google play edition device now for $350. Can not remember if it has similar specs or not figure kindle fire hdx.
Well i have the HDX 7" and it's a really nice tablet so far. I'm assuming the 8.9" is as well.

Without rooting many apps will side load and work but you can't sign into them with Google. I rooted and installed play and service's which you can not download from but it does allow you to sign into your already purchased or favorite side loaded apps. Right now I am using nook on kindle fire and various epubs from WV Deli and others. There is NO 8.9 inch alternative currently on any android tablet with this sort of hardware or screen or I would have bought it lol. If this is the form factor that turns you on I wouldn't be so hesitant to use it as it's one of the best tablets I have ever owned and I have had almost all of them. If however you want full and easy access to Google play with no hitches or bugs there is the LG G Pad 8.3 with a 1600 by 1200 res 8.3 inch screen, decent ppi, a nifty IR blaster and you can buy it with android 4.2 or even pure Google play edition 4.3 and and a SD 600 processor. It is not as sweet as this machine in many ways but it is very nice. Life is compromise my friend, at least until some young genius cooks a Rom for this machine, then I would unequivocally recommend that everyone buy and custom this tablet.
Good luck and happiness in your decisions.
I've got the nexus 7 the hdx 8.9 and the note 10.1 2014. I Use the HDX the least Just because Amazon is horrible, side loading apps you Usually end up with errors. Doesn't work with Chrome cast and really none of the google apps Work reliably . My go to Tablet Out of 3 is the Note 10.1 2014. Multitasking is just Awesome plus SD slot Comes in handy. The nexus 7 is really a good bang for buck, easily one handed and kitkat is blazing fast. The note has a slight couple of software stutters but I believe those issues will get worked out Soon.
Odd chromecast casting works fine for me, even from Netflix.
Lets pretend I want a lightweight high res tablet for about $150. That leaves me the HDX 7 that just went on sale or the Nexus 7 2013. I started with the factory refurb Nexus and within two weeks suffered the 5 blinks of death. I RMA'd it and bought the HDX new. So far, it seems that the only advantage to the HDX is that it is new so SquareTrade will include accidental damage coverage in the warranty for it. I can't get Open Garden/PDAnet/EasyTether etc to work on the HDX, and I had to load K-9 mail just to be able to send mail from my domain address through Gmail. I also can't use TetherGPS to make up for the missing GPS because the Mock Locations option is blocked. Oh, and I can't even use a background or a widget. Supposedly this thing has a blazing fast CPU/GPU, but Amazon says that it is being wasted on Candy Crush and Angry Birds. Seriously, this thing is amazing on paper, but Amazon locked it down and tore out the heart to the point that I'd rather have the somewhat buggy Nexus unless someone here can point me to some apps showing where it excels beyond the Nexus. I really do want to make the HDX work for me. but so far it is disappointing me at every turn. Oh, why is there so much less variety (and more cost) of accessories for the HDX vs the Nexus?

I thought rooting was particularly dangerous on the HDX? I thought I read that it was only recommended if the device was to stay offline since any (otherwise impossible to block) unexpected updates would brick a rooted HDX? Is that outdated? If so, would you please post a link to current rooting instructions?
This seems to be the current root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665683 . Even if the HDX is rooted and Gapps/framework etc is restored, most launchers, widgets, Google Now, bluetooth tether/VPN etc still won't work correctly?
root it, install supersu and install "prevent update" then you could go with launcher, widget, google service as other android tablet (except google maps and "recent apps" button doesn't work, others are fine). Remember doing it carefully with HDX toolkit.
Both tablets have to be rooted to do what I want. The Nexus only requires it to block the update to KitKat (which breaks VPN). The HDX has a superior screen, CPU/GPU, and SquareTrade warranty. The Nexus has GPS, rear camera, and a warranty that is root friendly. The HDX requires moderate modification to make things like Google Now, launchers, navigation and such work, and the Nexus does it all natively. The Nexus has a fatal flaw that can strike at any time in an unknown number of units, but it is covered by warranty while rooted. I suspect that even attempting root invalidates the HDX warranty. When you add it all up, I think I'm better off with the Nexus. I have to root, and it is designed to be easily modified without bricking. I think I'll use the GPS and rear cam more than I will notice the performance hit, though I prefer the screen and chassis of the HDX.
Hi all.
So, me & my fiancee both still have a 7" HDX, 32GB, LTE version. Is there any benefit to "upgrading" to the new Amazon Kindle HD8?
I know that those don't have an LTE option, but they do support MicroSD, which is nice. I could live without LTE, and tether to my phone.
But - app wise, compatibility with other devices, performance - are they any better than my 4 year old HDX? They ARE cheap, and that's pleasant, but I can't decide whether they are any good.
I wish Amazon had stuck to the high end devices, like the HDX, but I still struggle to find any other tablets that work as well as the Kindle devices. I personally really like Amazon's UI, I prefer it to stock Android.
Thanks for any advice/opinions!

HD 8 is inferior to HDX in terms of screen resolution, brightness, processor performance, memory speed and several important characteristics. Unless you require external storage support or are tied to Alexa and Amazon's eco-system HD 8 offers nothing appealing.
HD 8 can not be rooted (no custom ROMs) if that's a decision factor.

No, custom ROMs are not an issue, as stated, I like the Amazon interface. It's just that quite a few apps will no longer update on the HDX, Facebook being an example. I use the browser version now, but it is annoying.
And I am planning to buy an Amazon Echo & a Firestick, so I will be using Alexa, but I don't necessarily NEED that on my tablet...
Just wanted to revive this thread...
Both me & my fiancée still rock the Gen 3 HDX 7". Still love it. But; app compatibility & updates are getting fewer & slower. Now, I know the new Fire devices aren't as high end as these were - BUT - they are new. The HDX is 4/5 years old now, and the hardware & software make them less & less usable, I find?
Now, I will probably keep mine & root it & install a custom ROM on it, but we both actually LIKE the Amazon UI, and we are heavily tied into the Amazon ecosystem, with e-books, audio books, Amazon Prime, etcetera.
So; are the new ones any better with app support? Worth the €80?

I have several copies if both varients. All HDX are fully unlocked, running Lineage 14.1 and are my daily drivers. 8th gen HD 8s remain unrooted but tweaked with Nova and most Amazon apps/services disabled (using easily/fully reversible method). I like the larger panel on the HD 8 but it is decidedly heavier, slower and lower quality than the HDX. They both have their place. If you like Amazon's UI (including launcher) and their app portfolio then the HD 8 might be a good investment.
I've just found a tweak on here that helps keep the HDX usable, by allowing the GApps to be installed. However one of them is 100% NOT detected by Windows when I want to run a few ADB commands. Arse. Not at all. Charges via the USB port, but no data connection. That sucks...
So, the 8 may be coming to replace that one shortly, then. Is the 8 or the 7 a better option? You say it's heavier than the HDX; shame. I would have hoped that a newer device would have been leaner & sleeker. I preferred the 8 over the 7 due to the somewhat better hardware specs...

Fire 7 is decidedly entry level; HD 8 is decent albeit no HDX. You can read the specs and reviews. HDX remains the better device once unlocked and equipped with a custom ROM which isn't that difficult. However, if you prefer Amazons ecosystem and FireOS UX the HD 8 or 10 are clearly the better options.
Edit: Installing GApps on FireOS v4 is a disaster. Be happy you encountered a minor technical glitch that prevented a self inflicted wound. ?
