[Q] CarbonRom Wi-Fi hotspot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys,
Quick question: if I turn the portable wifi hotspot that is included in the settings menu of CarbonRom, will it charge my verizon account in any way? I still have unlimited data, so as far as I know, if I use the wireless hotspot then I will get the $30 charge. Can I use the hotspot in settings or should I download FoxFi or something like that to avoid charges.
Thanks.

No the verification is blocked. Having said that Verizon can see if you are using it if they want and can cancel your service for it. I don't know if anyone had had this happen, but it can.
By the way you can ask this in the carbon thread instead if starting a new thread.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the CarbonRom thread was the right place since it's kind of a noob question.
And hopefully Verizon won't see it too much. I plan to only use it about 5 times a year when I am in airports without free wifi.
Is there anyway to see how many devices are connected?

[Q] Activating a Thunderbolt on Alltel

I have tried a few times getting this answered, but never actually got an answer. I'm on an Alltel Smart plan, vzw has not engulfed the Alltel stores in our area. I've seen in posts that other members have gotten them to work on other networks, Alltel included, and I was just wondering how the whole process works? I've tried just switching it out with my current plan. The calls and text work, but not the data. Do I have to call vzw to unlock the sim card and that's all, or is there something more to it? I've looked and looked, and all I see is that it's possible, but not how to do it exactly. You can tell me it's possible to travel to the moon, but until you tell me how to build a rocket, I will never get there.
I don't think the data will work with alltel.
You can give Alltel a call and see what they say
The posts here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115840 suggest that it is possible, which I couldn't see why they wouldn't since the CDMA should still work, but I tried it once before and got nothing. I'm just curious if unlocking the SIM card would do it, or what I do have to do to get it to work.
I'm on an Alltel plan and I had no trouble activating the thunderbolt on my plan.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Did you have data working on it? What did you do to get it working? Was it unlocked, or did that not matter since the SIM is only used by the 4G?
I'm going to have to go in extra early to work and phone it in, since my current phone is dead, and I want to have as much info as possible going into it.
Everything works just fine. The plan has nothing to do with the service you get from your phone. When Verizon bought Alltel they bought their towers as well so everything that worked with Alltel was transferred to Verizon.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Tried phoning it in, to no avail. They asked for the MEID number. I thought it was the same as the EMEI number but wasn't sure so I played dumb. Got me nowhere since they couldn't find the model number of the TBolt in their system. And since the Desire's Number starts off A100 and the TBolt's starts off HT12, I can't pass it off as a desire? And they seem to be rather persistent on it being an alltel phone...
If your trying to activate this on at&t it will never work. The radio is a totally different band than the Verizon network.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea..... The desire sim will not work in the t bolt. I don't see how the t bolt could ever work on Alltel without being able to activate it with a sim in it. Call Verizon and talk to them about it. They should be able to transfer your account to Verizon no problem and send you a sim so you can activate the phone.

Alltel, which you have verified was working on Alltel. They just keep giving me the runaround on activating it since it's not an Alltel phone.

The desire does not have a sim since it is only 3g capable.
You said earlier that you had your tbolt working on your alltel plan.
I don't want to switch to verizon.
Don't you love how people state that they have done something and do not provide a link or info to backup what they said could be done? People, if you say that you got something to work where others have not. Use a little common courtesy and provide some info. Otherwise you are either misleading or teasing some one for no good reason at all.

All i did was call Verizon and had my plan from Alltel grandfathered over. How freaking hard is that to do? Is it that hard that a guide is really necessary? He will need a sim for his t bolt and the only way to get one is to have Verizon give him one.

You nor anyone ever said that you grandfathered over to vzw. It is not my plan, it is my parents and as they prefer to stay with alltel since they are cheaper, I don't really have that option.
As the post title says, I need to get the phone ACTIVATED on alltel, not grandfathered into a new plan. I've had the phone and text working on it before, I just needed assistance on getting the data to work on it if possible.
Posts here on the boards state that there are tbolts activated on alltel, but none state HOW. And since there is a sim card involved, that is all I'm trying to figure out. Is it possible as others' posts' suggest, or am I just sol until my contract expires in a few months?
I couldn't get the t bolt to activate without the sim. It will show a no sim error on the lockscreen and won't let data through. That is at least what I experienced. I would try talking to reps on Verizon and see what you can do because I bet if you get the right person on the line they will figure something out.

Thank you. If I can get data to work, it is preferable, and since I was told in the first link I posted that a lot of members here had it, I thought I would try it. But I haven't gotten anywhere with anyone .
That link doesn't seem to work, it's error'ing out on me. I guess I'll just have to settle for call and text for awhile. Thanks tho, and sorry if I came off a bit harsh.
No big deal. The only way I've seen ( I have googled his by the way) is by getting your plan grandfathered over to Verizon.
You can't do everything without the sim in a t bolt.

[Q] whats best for tethering

I used to use FoxFi and wireless tether, now both wont work on my GN2 I am running beans rom. Does anyone have a fix for either app or a new way to tether.?

It works through the ROM without any extra Apps. Just turn it on through the Wifi menu, or use the toggle from the pull down menu.
You'll get the red Verizon wifi icon in your task bar, but as long as you don't get a message to sign up for the wifi plan, you're good to go.
and if you get the subscription notification, just download portable wifi hotspot from playstore and that app will bypass it.
Gnome is correct. No apps needed with Beans ROMs.

To get the best results I have used the TrevE mod wifi tether app which can also be installed via beans rom... I find that I get FULL download and upload bandwidth from Verizon versus the stock app where I only get about 5-10mbps down and about 5mbps upload... You do have to have the correct settings though. The settings can be found in Bean's rom thread and it has been working great for me with no disconnects and about double the speed of the stock app! :good:

seriously lets not split hairs...you know what i meant. im saying unlimited data users can not just open the stock hotspot app and tether. a toggle or 2nd party app is required.
I am thinking about bucking up and buying one of these full price because I don't want to loose unlimited data. WiFi tether is my biggest need for free of course. On my droid x I use WiFi tether beta works like a top is this possible on rooted stock or is via custom ROM needed? Considering the 750$ I want to get the best bang for my buck any input is appreciated thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with that app. But like you, I use WiFi tether all the time, with an unlimited plan. "Portable WiFi Hotspot" works great, with stock and rooted as well. Available from the Market, and free to boot.
Thank you yeah I have been digging around and from what I read if you get a subsidized phone that the take your grandfathering that's why I think I will have to buy it outright at full price it sucks but I can burn through 5 gigs a week between hulu and Netflix tethering 2 other devices so a tiered data plan would kill me.
Don't waste your time with native Verizon hotspot app.

[Q]Mobile hotspot unlimited data root?

Just wondering if, when you root the s4, are there any additional hacks to get free mobile hotspot tethering? My droid 3 was hacked with a custom Rom, and a radio hack, and still would not allow mobile hotspot without paying the 20 dollars a month for mobile hotspot.

This only lets you use 500mb free. Then you have to pay T-Mobile more. I'm already paying $70 for unlimited internet.
What's a good third party hotspot app for rooted users?
I use Tethering Widget without any problems.
I get a page warning that I've used over 500mb when using Portable Wi-Fi hotspot widget.

Need tethering app that actually works

ATT wants $50 more on top of the $160 we are already paying to upgrade the data plan in order to enable tethering on my HTC One X. This is robbery. I've tried three tethering apps and my phone is rooted. Nothing seems to work.
Please advise.

flash a custom rom then you can easily achieve tethering
if you want to stay stock rooted, there's a mod to remove AT&T from the signal bar so it just shows 3G, H+...etc that will also allow you to tether directly from the built in hot spot. forgot the mod name otherwise i would have thrown you a link. you can probably find it on xda

That's fantastic news. When rooting the first time, I used this toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2587677. It has run apps requiring root so I think it is still rooted although I wish it would tell me when it updates because ATT no longer seems to find any except for individual apps. Once I got it rooted, I didn't follow through with a custom ROM because I didn't know how to check the popularity and stability of them. I would love to have tethering so that I can hot spot my phone when needed, and I would also like to have 'real' call recording as opposed to microphone based call recording. Assistance in where to go with this would be greatly appreciated.

[Mod] Enable Wifi Tethering (Recovery Flashable)

This mod will enable the Native Tethering on your AT&T HTC M8. All credit for the creation of this mod goes to Miller_Kid for his excellent work.
The purpose of this mod is for those of us (myself included) to be able to stay on our stock rom and still be able to enjoy a feature that is, by default blocked by the carrier, without flashing any custom rom.

1- Download the ZIP (Below)
2- Place on internal or external memory (user preference)
3- Flash in recovery

All this does is remove the limitation that's built into the system of the device. It does not change anything other than a string of code on the device itself. I can't guarantee AT&T will not figure it out, but if you are smart about it they'll never know. I use tethering every once in a while when my home wifi is struggling. I mainly tether to my iPad mini for streaming YouTube, but occasionally other things like movies and downloading games as well. AT&T never caught on to me. Sadly my dad took it upon himself to change our entire families data plan so he save a measly $5 a person. I told him I'd give him the damn $25 a month but oh well.... Maybe I'll just tether more and we'll go over our data usage and then he'll have to switch it. I've already confirmed with a friend at AT&T that I can have mine back dated and re-activated.
Anyway, enough of being sidetracked, to make a long explanation short.... You won't get caught because of this mod. You'd only get caught of you way way way over use this mod.

Agree with all in the above response to this question. Also, AT&T's method of detection is network based. There is nothing I have seen that on the phone side (mod, etc) that can prevent this.
If your behavior is discrete, and usage is low and only occasional, you will not be caught. Tether large amounts of data, and you will almost certainly be caught.

Agreed on all but the large amounts of data. I would agree with this when on computer and full websites, but like on the iPad or other tablet that use mobile websites rather than full sized I believe your safe because their detection would see that it's a mobile format and therefore not arouse suspicion (If that makes sense)...

Its unlikely they are looking at webpages and whether they were mobile format or not. The data packets are tagged as tethered, it doesn't matter whether you were viewing mobile pages or not (and that isn't going to conceal the tethering). At least that what folks here that are smarter than me have stated. If true, that means that AT&T can detect any tethering, they just choose not to enforce with zero tolerance (possibly because its simply not practical), but rather to use some additional parameters to decide whether a person is going to receive the "warning" email and subsequently have a tethering plan added to their account.
Nobody here knows for sure what parameters AT&T uses to trigger the "warning" email (and probably not info that AT&T is going to volunteer). But volume of tethered data has been reasonably speculated. I'm surprised to hear that you were able stream YouTube, other movies, and downloads, without getting caught. Could be you were just lucky; or you are in fact correct that tethered data volume is not the key indicator. Nobody except folks at AT&T know for sure.
My advice is still to keep tethered usage to a minimum, in order to stay of their radar.
