Are you running stock firmware? The stock video player is very picky. Try downloading mxplayer and the arm7 codec for it. Should work fine..As another test, use your phones camcorder and record a video in 720(make like a 15 second video and slowly pan around the room) try and play it back and see if that works. If it does, often times a 720-1080 video wont stream properly or if not coded properly for your device it wont playback properly.
As far as your display problem, id need more information as to what exactly you mean by poor. (When it happens, what it looks like)

Probably due to same issue with HQ Youtube videos huh?
How can I bypass the "This device is not supported by Netflix" that I get when clicking on a title on my Instant Queue, so I can see if it is working or if it just audio only. Is there a way to spoof the app into thinking I am on a supported phone? If so, please tell me how to do it. Thanks.
There is an apk that will not check for device compatiblity but yeah no video. For me it plays audio and then it kicks out back to the queue. I wish it worked. Anything we can do?
Can't tell anything without knowing what codec / format Netflix is using in this app. I'm sure they're using H.264, but if it's not H.264 Baseline Profile then our phone hardware can't decode it. And if it's larger than 640x360 resolution, our current codec can't handle it.
I don't have a Netflix account so I haven't tried to see what formats they're using.
The current codec we have is written in C++ with threads. I'd say that's at least a 10% performance hit right there; if it was written well, in straight C, it would probably have achieved the 800x480 that Qualcomm's original spec claimed.
Netflix released an updated app today with support for more devices. I get the main screen, then loading, then the playback screen and nothing .... black screen. Nerts.

I'm not sure what 'nerts' are, but the new video playback libs might be necessary... Anyone with those new libs given this new app a shot?

nerts = nuts = really mild profanity
I actually have the new libs installed already. I'm running a RHOD500 with the latest kernel, overclocked to 710 Mhz, in case that matters.

HQ YouTube works more or less. There's a little stutter sometimes, and some HQ videos start and then stop after 5 or 10 seconds, and some others play just fine. Oh, and the libs fixed video playback of the mp4 movies I already had on my device.
Weird thing is, YouTube under WinMo refuses to play HQ videos at all.
Nerts is funnier.

It used to. Some time back YouTube changed something, and now HQ videos play without sound (I was thinking they didn't play at all). Supposedly you can fix this by changing your network to "media," but I don't have that option any more since I upgraded to 6.5.

I just rebooted to see. Worked fine for me, I'm on 6.5 - but I used Opera... I don't know if there's some app that I should be using, perhaps it wasn't truly HQ.
Either way, if it used to then there shouldn't be anything limiting the hardware. Seems hyc went thru all that pretty thoroughly tho.

I'm using Dot's latest rom dated 04-23-11 and it does play HQ youtube flawlesly, unlike NRG's which for some reason have a little choppy sound while the video plays, or it could just be my old tilt2

I was using the HTC YouTube app. I tried it on two different 6.5 TP2s and they both do the same thing, HQ video plays, but no sound.
And your right. I know the hardware is capable, just somewhere along the way something in the software got screwed up on YouTube's end or mine.
Anybody try changing the build.prop to HTC vision or desire z or any of the phones that works with Netflix that's how we have it working already in my section

I don't think the new version checks to see what model you're running.
The new Netflix app has a LOT of compatibility issues.
They still can't get it working on most Huawei S7 ROMs, and that device can do 720p easily.

[Q] youtube wont work on stock hero gsm

Hi. I have 2 hero phones and a desire hd, so I love HTC. Anyhow my dad and wife use the hero phones and recently my wife complains that YouTube won't work. It says this video can't be played. Almost all videos are like this. My dads says he thinks his is the same but I will need to check.
The phones are not rooted and run 2.1. What can I do to fix this. All YouTube used to work fine when the hero was my own main phone. Would rooting and custom roms fix this.
Cheers des
Just a update. Videos older than about 1 year ago play fine, but newer than that won't play. I have installed tubemate and I can use that to watch newer videos, but it isn't as good to use as YouTube app. Also YouTube on the internet brings up a yellow ! when I try to play. Cheers.
Is this normal or am I missing something. Thanks guys.
It is because the new videos are played in HD. If you turn the phone to landscape, there is a HD button at the bottom. Press that and you'll be fine ... I hope ;-)
sent with love from me to you
Ok I tried this on both the hero phones and still the same problem. I can't play videos less that about 1 year old. What am I doing wrong. Cheers
hix
same me
i sometime i can play on youtube, now,i cant use flash play video
No one can help us ?
Try running the videos through Flash from browser m.youtube.com not Youtube app
Normally these kind videos run if you un check HQ option in the landscape mode
Post the video URL here, we can check if it works with an updated rooted phone.
This works for me. Where you see the HQ thing shows up just tap on it and it works.

the (adb install YouTube_signed.apk) should be (adb install signed_YouTube.apk). Good luck.

Audio lags behind Video stream

Not sure if it's just me, but when I'm watching video streams, anything from ESPN, YouTube, browser embedded videos, or HTC Media Streamer based content, Audio stream noticeably lags behind. About half a second actually.
Has anyone noticed this behavior, and what's the solution?
Thanks.
i've noticed it lags on the videos that you record. the audio is a little quicker than the video.
Yup that's exactly the case. Audio lags behind video in pretty much anything that's using HTC's native "Streaming Media Player". Massive and consistent lag.
Netfilx, WatchESPN, and similar third party apps don't lag as much though.

I'm talking anything, not only your camera content. If you get TubeMate and download any YouTube video onto your phone, and then play it with the default player, you'll notice a massive lag. Doesn't matter if HD or SD content. The phone is definitely NOT struggling to keep up.
The issue has to be within the actual OS settings.

interesting. wouldn't surprise me. do me a favor, go try MX Player. I've been using that on my Nexus 7 and love how it works. maybe that'll fix it? what does the stock app have that that doesn't, besides the ability to take a still shot picture?

Actually all the third party players seem to have the same issue. Used MX, VPlayer, Dice, BSPlayer, VLC.
This is clearly OS wide issue (at least on my unit). Has anyone experienced similar behavior on your DNA?
i dont see this on my DNA. i tried youtube and TWit live and voice and video is spot on.

In YouTube app lag isn't as drastic, but if you download the video and then watch, we're talking over 250ms. I also restored recently, same issue.
Am I the only one having this issue?!
i haven't downloaded any videos on to this thing so i really can't say lol
so wow, I was just watching a youtube video and yeah... the audio was slower than the video. I bet it has to do with the full HD screen.. what else could it be? ugh pretty damn annoying. this sucks because I'm anal as hell when it comes to audio and video lag...

I haven't experienced any of these issues. Sounds like an issue with TubeMate. I mean, you said streaming from YouTube was ok, but downloaded videos had lag. That, to me, sounds like a problem with your download program.

The nexus 10 has the same lag due to the screen resolution.

Even when streaming within YouTube app, the lag is present, it's just not as evident. However, when playing any content loaded onto the device, the lag is north of 250ms which is major!
Another example is my subscription to Futubox which has two ways of delivering HD content, browser flash based, and m3u8 where HTC MEdia Streamer handles the content natively. Flash plays perfectly in sync (although drains more battery), but m3u8, or rtmp/rtsp lags terribly.
I've tried the same exact m3u8 stream on an iPad 3 and a PC, no lag whatsoever, even when AirPlayed.
I simply mentioned TubeMate because it's the easiest way to grab video content onto the storage. Besides that, TubeMate downloads whatever the digital source is, could never be the cause if the issue.
This is OS level issue, and it's real.
so it seems screen resolution is the culprit. btw guys I've reported this to htc, and sent the link for this thread. They're in contact with me. I suggest you report it too

[Q] Choppy video playback/stutter (Lags)

So,I've got another problem.
Suddenly,my 720p video playback got choppy while watching in web (no issues in gallery),and again, this happens only on stock ROM. Can anyone tell what can be the cause, please? This is getting annoying,I can't enjoy watching videos on youtube anymore. The worst thing is,that changing ROMs didn't help.

Guess there's something with GPU. Wondering if it can be replaced? Or replacing everything under the hood could help?

Netflix HDR Playback issue

Hi all,
So far I am liking the phone, I am having an issue and I dont know if it's me or what. When I was regular shows/movies on Netflix (HD) it looks great, no issues what so ever. But when I view HDR shows the whole thing has a really bad brownish tint to it.
I tried to take a screen shot of it but it would not let me do that. I dont know if I did something wrong in the settings which in the display part it is set to Movies and the Enhanced Video Color is turned on as well.
If you need more information to help me fix this issue please me know.
Thanks in advance
Is anyone else having similar issues or is it just me?
I'm not signed up for Netflix 4k (which is the plan to get HDR), so there's no way I can test it.

Just a standard and a high option and mine is set to high. I know, every other app like youtube and so on plays it perfect. May jusy be the Netflix app itself
Mine do not appear to play in HDR either and the video information shows HDR on the description. I wish it would show an HDR logo like my TV when it is playing in HDR. As far as youtube, what HDR resolution do you guys use? Mine is a bit choppy in 720p and skips frames badly at anything above.
I set my Youtube to 4K ... it was flawless over wifi ..
TMobile limits you to 480p to keep unlimited usage.
All, my Sony Xperia xz premium does indeed show HDR when I look up the Daredevil series. BTW it's a good to test the screen with. Anyway the V30 only shows HD so my feeling is that we are not watching HDR. I could be that Netflix hasn't authorized the V30 for HDR viewing as of yet. As I recall it took a bit for the XZP to get added to the white list.
Just got my V30 US998 and I noticed the same thing with HDR Netflix playback. It's similar to what I've seen with some early "HDR Compatible" TVs that are technically capable of receiving the signal, but not applying the appropriate processing or color mapping to make it look right. It could just be that Netflix needs to update the app to support the V30, or maybe it will be fixed with a future system update. Youtube does look great, but I'm not 100% sure that's playing in HDR properly either because there's no indication one way or another.
Question on the HDR youtube videos... I saw a screenshot somewhere (not v30) showing that you could actually choose HDR as a separate "quality setting". i.e. you'd have "480p, 720p, 1080p, 720pHDR, 1080pHDR" so on and so forth. My youtube doesn't show that. Is there any way to confirm that it's actually playing in HDR?
It looks out of this world, so it probably already is playing HDR, but just figured I'd check for sanity.
Same for me. HDR videos on Netflix are washed out. As if Netflix is rendering the video in a different colorspace. HD videos are fine.
