Why underclock?

R: [Q] Best kernel for underclocking
i have no idea why you would buy a high end phone to underclock....i gues u just wanna test it and see how low it can go before crashing(ur lucky cpu master has the option not to set cpu at startup).
My guess is...it will crash easily ciz touchwiz requires some perfornance to run smoothly.
Anyways i would guess the best for underclocking is also the best for overclocking...my kernel is syiah...try it.
If u f**k up something...u can still get the same low-end feeling of your underclocked s3 on a windows phone
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
It really doesn't matter what kernel you use to under clock....1.2GHz is 1.2GHz.....regardless off the kernel, likewise, if you set voltages, it doesn't really matter what you do it with, add long as the kernel is capable of oc/uc.
I suggest doing some research before you start messing with stuff you don't understand

Buy a cheap Chinese s3 copy no need to underclock

I guess i phrased the question wrongly, my phone heats up very quickly and the battery runs out real fast, so i thought maybe i should underclock/undervolt... or should i just buy a new battery?

Something is causing that problem, most likely an app or the media scanner playing up, you need to eliminate all those things before you start looking at kernel side fixes

Firstly have you tried different roms and or kernels?
What kind of temperatures are you reaching?

Yeah that sort of problem is caused by instability not overclock. Ive got my s3 overoverclocked(more than samsung's stock overclockment XD) and i dont get any heating.
Like the other dude said it's a problem within the system options...wil be difficult to find unless u installed something weird recently...
Only way is flash new rom and more stable/different kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Try Boeffla Kernel, best one IMO. Easy to use and very customizable.
But if your phone gets hot for no reason you should have it repaired. Mine had a similar issue, it heated until reboot. Sent it to be repaired, according to samsung it was a motherboard issue.
Thread closed as its a best kernel thread.

How to extended the battery life time and minimize it's draining during your daily usage of the SGS2 ?
Also is. Over clocking. Increases the battery draining ?
To extend your battery life, stop using your phone and/or decrease the screen brightness when using it.
Overclocking will probably increase the battery drain if your phone is using the overclocked frequencies.
To increase your battery life turn your phone off every time you are not using it, turn it on when you want to use it, that will get you good battery life.
Honestly search this forum there are a handful of threads that give guides and tutorials on how to maintain battery life not that difficult to search my friend.

Use it as a paperweight and that should be good enough..Or just keep having the charger in it while you are at home
anyway lame jokes aside. get yourself a decent kernel. in your case speedmod. set the governor of your choice and let the magic begin......seriously for you that kernel should be fine. just do not get to excited when the magic begins and you start kissing your phone though just do not tell us here
Hope that helps mate

Speedmod is fine on default. No need to change governor unless you want to try conservative but I recommend to leave speedmod as is.

To be honest you don't need to use any of those type of application you are better off just removing them and leaving the kernel on complete stock.

Governors are for scaling cpu as you just said. As Nikz said if you are using speedmod no point using any cpu apps as the kernel does all the work for you

Hi, I need some battery help, this is my first android phone after running with ios for the last 4 years, I'm using th S3 and loving it however I'm having to charge the phone twice a day. Like I say this is my first android so rooting is new and I unsure what I'm doing here. I've followed plenty tips to save battery life but it's still running down too quick.
After 3 1/2 hours of very little use my battery is at 70%
Standby has zapped 24% of that
Screen another 24%
Internet 21%
System 12%
OS 8%
These safe the main culprits for the battery use, I understand you can do something when you root the devise, any help would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks
This should be in the Q&A section, but please be specific as to what exactly you were doing? (Gaming, browsing in 3g or wifi, etc.) If you just got the phone however, just wait for about three and four days and the real battery life would start to emerge. This is the time when most phones can actually last for almost a day or two. Another thing is that you should download Better BatteryStats and find apps that give the most wakelocks. Just take a screenshot and upload it here if you need help. And live wallpapers and widgets do cause some unnecessary battery drain.

I've had it since release. I hoped that JB would fix the battery. I'll try and get a screenshot later
maybe something stopping your device from going into deepsleep.
One use Better Battery Stats ,
Two read the multitude of battery threads .

I think he's talking about underclocking the max cpufreq to 800 mhz when you're sure that you're not going to be using the device for a while. I think it's a pretty good idea actually, but certainly not practical for everybody especially heavy users like me

Yeah. I sometimes do that when im not near a charger and my battery is dwindeling. Anything less than 800mhz is pretty bad though when your used to the rapidness.
Looks like im selling this badboy anyway. Hopefully get a lg nexus next week. It seems to me that to acheive proper butteryness you have to use toichwiz ui. None of the cm10 or even when i use nova or any other launcher. None of are as smooth as tkuchwiz.Im mad for mods and flashing so think its time for a switch.

Thinking of the same too actually. But based on the rumors, I hear more nexuses coming from other OEMs are to be actually revealed rather than just from lg. Although if the nexus 4 really does come with just 8gb of internal storage without a microsd slot then I'm sticking with my S3. Although I hear that new parts of code are already starting to show up in the Origen-board-something for exynos processors, this might turn out to be a gamechanger for our problems with cm10 or other pure android goodies.

i am new to xda else would have posted direct here

I'm not sure what you mean by affect your processor. If you mean performance, no uv doesn't affect your performance unless you set it too low then it gets unstable and goes into bootloop. So you'll wish to tread carefully when going into over -75mv.
As for long-term damage on the phone, I heard many people say differently. Might wanna search and see for yourself. Personally don't really think it'd damage the hardware if you uv a little.

yes, with 'affect on processor' i meant that after a time period will it affect my hardware or not. my processor will be in good condition or not.

Benchmarks are unreliable ..
You have a custom rom and a custom kernel .
So why are you not asking the question in the relevant threads ???
jje
I never trusted benchmarks, but this one is so damn low.
Because I can ask almost everything I want in this thread. In rom/kernel thread just a part of the users answers, here a lot more people are watching so I might have extra chances xD.
Don't worry about benchmarks. Add long as real feel feels fast and not laggy then everything should be good

But it does!Whatever rom/kernel I use, after like 2-3 days of use it becomes laggy.
I don't have more than 30 apps installed :-/

Ok there are still other things you can do. Maybe something is eating your cpu. Try using cpuspy or setcpu to see what clocks your using. If its at the highest clock all the time that could indicate a cpu hog.
See what processes are using those high clocks with top or another program run on the phone.
Most important though is to see what is actualy causing the low score, which part of the benchmark is causing low scores. Maybe IO or memory performance, cpu might be fine.

I've already flashed two kernels in hopes of overclocking my Note 1. On one, it hung at the Samsung screen and on the other it booted (after doing something with each app) but kept showing force close messages that I couldn't close.
I really want to overclock my phone because it freezes a lot.
Also, I haven't had any luck with radios, either. These flash okay, but with dramatically slower speeds. Right now, I get on avg. 10 mpbs, but I've seen people with upwards of 50.
How could I do these things? Thanks.

I'm running Blackstar XI with AT&T. And I've only tried flashing overclock kernels, with no success. SetCPU lets me underclock, but the current kernel doesn't let me OC.
Kind of the same with the radios. I've only tried flashing them, with no faster speeds.
Are there other methods then these ways?

Well hopefully your flashing correct kernels for whatever ROM your running first thing ... And the 50mbps is probably due to the LTE speeds tmo released in a few cities .. Kansas is one I know of .....and over clocking isn't always the best ... I underclock myself to help save battery ... I'm not calling you a noob by any means but read up on android news and check our forums and you will fins your answers I promise

I'm not saying don't over clock I just don't cause of battery drain ...... You can just watch CPU temperature and be careful ...maybe don't over clock to max just a little bit like 1600 or something

The only kernel capable of over clocking right now is ptmr3s kernel but I believe it only works with that hong Kong firmware. There are older kernels that can over clock but won't work with the latest cm merges. Like Shane said don't max out most notes can't handle it I never go higher then 1792. Over clocking is great but I don't think we will see a over clock kernel any time soon maybe look into scripts and tweaks.

Seeing how every one is giving there opinion I'll give mine do you really save that much batery ? I don't under clock because my battery life is acceptable and if my phone gets low I charge it whether I'm at home car wherever. do you guys not have to charge your phones every day? Under clocking does not reduce performance. Mediocre gaming does not need 1.5ghz if you UC to 1.2/1.1 your performance will remain the same... Out of the extra hour of battery life that doesn't reduce performance its kind of a no brainer. Anyways stay on topic.
