Hello. I have never rooted a device before. I have done some browsing around the forums, and there are so many ROM's and s off's and on's that I have no idea where to begin.
Can someone recommend me which ROM to get and point me to a step by step guide on how to install it? I mainly just want to be able to tether my phone by allowing it to be a wireless access point.
I of course have the DROID DNA. I did read something about not updating b/c the new updates are unrootable, but I think the phone did update .
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I do have version 1 of the firmware available.
Go to settings, about, software information and tell me your software version. Its either going to be 1.15 or 2.04 iirc.

As far as I know, you can't root/unlock the current official firmware. You can check what version you are on in settings/about phone. If its 2, you will unfortunately have to wait.
As far as s-off, all it does is make it easier to flash custom kernels, and easier to hard brick. Don't s-off unless you know what you're doing. Of you don't know, you don't need it.

Where can I check to see when a new update is available? In which subforum?
New update for.......?

He's probably talking about where can he check for updates on unlocking on the ota. My answer is really no where. There really isn't much info on it besides that it's being worked on and when and if they get it, it will be released but there isn't like a progress forum or anything. When it gets figured out they will either post a new thread or add to the thread that has the old method.

Ok, so I got a DNA with the version 1 firmware.
What do I do from here? I just want the ability to use my phone's wifi tether. I don't care about the ability to overclock the processor, though it seems pretty much any ROM with super user will let you do it anyway I guess. Also, I want to get rid of all the bloatware. The phone only has 16 GB memory and only has 11 GB available. I don't need Kindle app or any of that other crap on the phone. What else is there that I need to look out for in deciding which ROM to use? Do you guys have 1 to recommend?
I really appreciate everyone's help.
Bump for help.
I'm trying to follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012346 but can't get passed the 1st step of using the CID app.

I am very new to this, but my Droid DNA, that i just got, is giving me troubles with unlocking the bootloader. I am used to samsungs, and HTC's are confusing to me... I just rooted my uncles HTC One S, and that was pretty simple, but this is still mind boggling to me. If you know how to fix this, please PM me. I have tried the SuperCID app, and it doesnt change my MEID, and HTCDev wont work until I unlock the Verizon Bootloader. I've tried HTCDev, but i keep getting the error code 160, MID Not Allowed. Please help me. thank you for any advice you may have.

If you just bought the phone and it has the newest update, you can't unlock or root. There is no method for the new firmware.
smh... doesn't anybody read anymore? I thought it was normal to gather information before diving in to Unlock bootloaders... Guess not.
Sorry to be so harsh but there are a ton of threads here that would have let you know this is not possible

No. SuperCID broke with the 2.04 update. There is no way to downgrade. There is no current alternative.

" Riff JTAG Box " can flash back to old bootloade hboot 1.33 , i have done it on dozens of updated Dna's
I've rooted a few of my previous phones, but my DNA is getting slow on me.
Have had the DNA since it came out, but never got around to fixing it up. I'm really out of the loop, so I need to be schooled again.
I want the speed back in my DNA, what's the best method? Thanks!

Are you on the newest update? Are you unlocked? The best way is to either flash a custom ROM and kernel or just flash a custom kernel on your stock ROM.

To s-off you need to use the rum runner exploit
Head to rumrunner.us download the exploit for the dna and follow the simple instructions.
From there you will be unlocked and s-off so you can flash a recovery and flash a custom rom to speed up your phone again.

Hello xda. I just got a Droid incredible 4g lte today and I am loving it so far and hoping to get more in depth with it. But the first thing I must ask is how can I make the apps in my phone go default to the SD card, I have a 32gb SD card. I installed modern combat 4 and then followed by Nova 3, my phone canceled the Nova 3 download because of space problems. So I'm just wanting to have the big apps go to my Android/obb folder on my SD card but they won't. I tryed using es file Explorer to move the mc4 files to SD card then play it. But once I started the game it wanted me to download it.. Is there any way to fix this or will I need a rooted phone and some kind of Rom? Thanks for any help. All will be thanked.

Wow. Patience is a virtue. Yes, you will need to be rooted. If you just got the phone yesterday, hopefully you are still on build 2.17.605.2 or earlier.
I suggest that you look at the Droid Incredible 4G LTE Resource Index in the General area. That will point you to rooting methods, and there is also a link to Jose's SD Card Swap Mod that does exactly what you are looking for.

Thank you so much. And I got this phone from a pawnshop lol. It is on the version you said above and hboot 1.15. This is probably the best phone I have ever used, I really like how it has the adreno 225! Can't wait to unlock this baby and get to flashing! The previous phone I had was the HTC evo 3d. So I have experience with HTC phones, but this droid looks like it will be abit of a challenge to s-off. Hopefully I can find a perfect rom that won't require it. I like to use Windows but I think the only methods avaliable to s-off only work with Linux, and I by no means have experience using Linux.

Root it now and get on a ROM that isn't subject to the OTA before the OTA finds its way into your phone before it's too late!
I do recommend s,-off, as it makes like much easier. Try making an Ububtu Live CD and play around with it to see if you can get comfortable with it before trying DirtyRacun. You can also look at face palm method.

If you root and stay "rooted stock", you'll get the OTA. No bueño.
The 2.1.1 release of ViperLTE also gets the Verizon OTA notice. No bueño. If like Sense-based ROMs, I highly recommend the latest ViperLTE version 2.2.0, as it has setting to turn off OTA checks. I have not received an OTA notification since installing 2.2.0 and ticking that setting. I was getting them on 2.1.1.
I would fully expect that CyanogenMod to not get an OTA notice, either. However, I cannot confirm.

I certainly will not allow this phone to get updated. So here's another question, would you say this phone is good for gaming? I got it cause of the adreno 225, my previous evo 3d had the 220. I'm also hoping that if I find a kernel that supports overclocking it can help things out. I want to match this phone up to the HTC evo 4g lte, which also has the adreno 225, but a 1.5 GHz dual core rather than 1.2.

Hi everyone,
I have used the forums in the past to root my old s3 and before that to root/add a custom rom to an old HTC Aria so I do have a little experience with modifying phones. I recently got the HTC m8 (att version) and was holding off on doing anything to it until the EPS got added. Since the update today, EPS is currently live on my phone. How would I go about rooting it now? I saw a post about the old root methods, but will they still work with the new update? I basically want to root my phone so that I can uninstall any bloatware. I know I can disable it but would prefer to get it off completely. On my s3 I also used an app to prevent certain apps that I periodically used from automatically starting up. Would rooting be my best option? I have read up a little on the S-off, and I don't believe I need to do this to uninstall bloatware, but please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks in advance for any advice.
You may just wanna boot loader unlock and flash twrp first in order to keep that full stock image. So once you start uninstalling things you don't run into trouble. Also it's the easiest method to root (after fastboot flashing twrp 2.7.0.2, you can flash supersu 1.94 via recovery and your good to go. Stock backup with root

If you're already S-Off, then the update can't do anything about it.
If you're S-On, and firewater was patched in the update, then you shouldn't be able to S-Off (unless another exploit is found). Thing is, I don't think anyone who's S-On has updated yet to test firewater. I will when I get my replacement, but I won't have that for days.

Yep, I was also able to
Some people are having issues with the OTA update after they S-OFF. About 30-40% through the update process, their phone freezes with a red exclamation point on the screen. Then again, it works for others, so I'm not really sure what's causing the issue.
