1) Make sure USB Debugging is 'ON'
2) Disable your PC's antivirus and uninstall if you have it installed on your phone.
3) Make sure that the mobile drivers are installed on your PC, check for that in the device manager.
4) Make sure you know what you are flashing and that Kernel/Firmware is developed for your model. You cannot flash SIII kernels on SII as that would brick your device!
5) That's pretty much it!
Good Luck!

I can add to this by saying:
1. DO NOT TICK repartition unless you're asked to do so.
2. DO NOT use PIT file unless asked to do so.

Kies is like Odin's bigger brother, so it can interfere with Odin while flashing. U MUST EXIT Kies using ur Task manager before starting Odin.

Yep. Initial root requires a computer.
If you really need to root right now, download Odin and CF-Root on your phone and ask someone to borrow their computer or use a public computer. Move the files to the computer and root it in less than one minute and you're done!
i have a few questions maybe you guys can help... so here we go:
when you root with odin, it unlocks the phone giving you su right. does this also change your rom?
how is the launcher different than the rom? difference between flashing rom and kernal?
last one... when you install a custom rom, can you delete it if there are bugs to reinstall a different one or use the stock?

You need to include way more information. Please refer to the thread in my sig for the info you need to include to get the best answers.
Also you need to make sure that Kies is not running in the background. And make sure you have the drivers installed

Also make sure to try out different usb ports. It was one of my problem once where my phone wasn't detected in a certain usb port eventhough I flashed through it once.

It is quite simple. Follow one of the many already existing threads.
Easiest way is to download cfroot and Odin. Load the file into the pda and hit start. Very simple

Go to original android developement / click on Cf-Root by chainfire / Download the latest CF-Root which is v 6.4
Download and install ODIN for pc / Run it and click on PDA / select the CF-Root file and click open
Make sure re-partition box IS NOT TICKED / Start flashing / it'll take about 3 seconds and then it will reboot automaticly.
i told the easiet way to root .Hope this helps

Kernel flashing

Firstly if there is already a thread on kernel flashing I'm sorry but I couldn't find it as i am new to xda forums and could you kindly leave a link to that post ? If not, I have recently a few months back rooted my gs3 i9300 with cm10.2 (just recently flashed ) and since I'm a heavy user for games on my phone I tend to drain my battery a lot and I noticed that my phone kept getting hot (40+ degrees) and was thinking of flashing a kernel. Any thoughts and precautions on flashing a kernel and how do I flash one ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Stick with stock on cm10.2 mate. best bet.
I9100/I9300
Kernel is just a boot.img and when you flash one, it replaces the previous one. Roms all include a kernel so if you flash a kernel you don't like, reflash the rom to get its kernel back.
More info in "understanding the basics before rooting" which can be found by following the link in my signature to general > sticky roll-up

I didn't realise it wasn't a good idea to use ROM manager with the s3.. Why is that then? I went that way because my laptop is a Macbook and hiemdall didn't seem to work well so I had a quick ten mins on a laptop at work with Odin to root and then I only had my Macbook to use so ROM manager is the way I went too manager seems to be the same thing as well

From experience I can say that using ROM Manager can soft brick your device. I once wanted to use it with my old S2 to install CWM and I got into a bootloop afterwards. Only re-flashing a Samsung ROM via Odin helped to boot into Android.
One of the easiest way (in my opinion) to root your device is to flash a Kernel via Odin that will give you Root. The Siyah Kernel is a good place to start, since the developer also provides tar files for odin to flash. It will give you Root and from then on you can install Stweaks and flash CWM from there.
I wish i d of spoke to u a few months ago when I first rooted cause I buggered about with it for weeks! I didn't realise you could install recovery from steaks either.. Have you got much apple Mac/android sync experience?.. I can only describe it as trying to get arch rivals to mate!.. Might just dual boot windows on the Macbook if I can't get them to play nice
