[Q] Questins about restoring a ADB backup to a different rom - HTC EVO 3D

Ok, so my phone is near-useless after updaring it to the stock ICS update.
First of all it turns out that ICS has a limit on how many apps you can have installed on the SD card, Gingerbread did not, end result is the phone rebooting every 5 minutes or so until I took out the SD card and manually removed some of the installed apps from it.
And now I have so little free space that I cannot install or update ANY apps, any attempts to clear space, even if I clear up to 100MB, is instantly for some reason wasted again to under 70MB free... (why it can't update apps under 1MB when it has 70MB free I'll never know).
I have just about had it, I am going to root it and install a rom that isn't garbage.
It was a big annoyance because I use the 3D and MHL features of my phone, and nearly NO rom supports the 3D feature, and many more don't support MHL or even 4G. But I finally found one called SmoothCriminal that appears to basically be a heavily tweaked Sprint stock rom which supports everything, so I am going to flash it to that. (Any opinions on this?)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951101
It was the ONLY one I found that has 3D support that isn't just a rooted stock Sprint rom with no chances whatsoever, I coulden't find any others.
So apparnetly, no matter WHAT root method I use, it will wipe the phone, and every attempt at gaining temp root access when I was on gingerbread so I can perform a backup failed.
I was reading this though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351
Apparently I can backup everything on ICS even without root.
I don't care about backing up the apk packages themselves, as I can just reinstall those (there is no way to do a mass-reinstall from the play store is there?), just their data and settings.
Would I be able to restore this backup once I have reflashed my phone with a rooted SmoothCriminal rom? Or is there a good chance they will be incompatible and cause me problems?
Any advice on this is appreciated.

[Q] Need help, cannot install apps or recovery backuped ones

In a world of trouble now. been on sd 1.9.0 (initially on 318 official), everything was great for some time, then, after a month or two, phone started acting funny (frequent random reboots, hangs, could not start for hour or two when got into dell logo loop...), so i decided to do factory reset. did it and after that could not install any app or recover any titanium backuped apps. when installing any app, install process will continue endlessly, with progress bar always on start (but not freezed, bar is moving, but there is no progress). same thing with titanium backups - could not make any restore - also it starts, but no progress.
later tried new rom flash (sd 1.9.0), then 1.8.1, then 318, then simplestreak 1.2, then again 1.9.0, all with factory resets - could not fix my problem - could not install or make recovery.
hardware-wise all seems without malfunctions. been thinking that maybe internal sd is defective, made check from engineering menu and all seems ok with it.
got no more remedies, made around 50 reflash attempts today, no luck.
another idea that buggs me: could it be that app folder on internal memory is somehow not writable? what are normal permissions on internal memory folder structure?
looking forhelp - solutions or ideas. do you think that is hardware or software defective?
got some kind of warranty, but i'm not sure that i could enforce it...
Can you install apps normally though the market or sideloaded?
It could be that your backups are bad if you can install other stuff
Need a little clarification. Does your ROM after the flash run OK? If it no longer reboots on its own or hangup, doubt you have a problem with your internal SD.
I would recommend scrapping Titanium, I quit using it and started using MyBackUp Pro and haven't had any issues since when I recover apps.
You could do one of several things...
1)Use the QDL tool to get back to a stock ROM, then flash StreakMod and then StreakDroid 1.9.0 and see what happens.
2)Try replacing the internal SD with a 4GB class 10 which will improve performance and do away with the trouble if that were the problem
3)Use the QDL tool to get back to stock ROM and send it in for warranty if all else fails

No, i can't install via market. When i connect to market, it instantly start to download updates (Gmail, Maps etc.) and, when downloaded, it will start installing, and progress will endlessly be stuck on start...so basically same thing like manual install or Titanium recovery.

Ok, you do understand that if you are allowing the market to install all the updates you had on your phone before, it could take a considerable amount of time, and may seem to get stuck. It doesn't download and install one by one, it begins downloading everything you had in your market account (something I hate about the market), so it may be trying to install 20 or 30 or 40 apps and updating others that are part of Android ALL at the same time. It could easily take an hour if you have a hundred apps or so on your phone.
Just a comment, not sure if you have taken that into consideration.
But I doubt you internal SD is bad, if it were, you wouldn't get as far as you get without some force closes, or maybe not even boot.
Your issue is software related in my opinion. But I could be wrong.

ROM(s) working (relatively) OK. Have some FCs on some ROMs, no frequent hangups and only some reboots. Didn't have any of them for a long time because i was trying to find some solution for apps install because without ability to install smartphone is useless.
I heard some bad things of Tutanium, but i was happy with it so far, and i think that it is not his fault.
1) tried that (318 and 351 stock), and others combinations, and always ended with same problem
2) and 3) if i try to replace internal sd, then i will void my warranty
if anything else fails, i'll try my warranty, but i don't know if i'll succedd, but i'll like it better to fix it on my own, if it is software problem, not hardware
Breaking News!
Interesting turn of events: out of pure despair, i tried to flash Streakdroid 2.0 (Gingerstreak).
Out of blue, i could again install apps! I played a little, and tried to flash SD 1.9, hoping that it would be "fixed" now. But, sadly, it isn't! I still cannot install apps on SD 1.9.0! I flashed SD 2.0 again, and found that on SD 2.0 i CAN again install apps (Titanium also works, although it is basically useless because most of backuped apps and settings don't work on GB).
Here is summary:
- on Froyo builds (318, 351 stock; SimpleStreak 1.2; 1.8.1, 1.9.0 SD) i CANNOT install apps (endless install loop) and restore Titanium backups
- on GB build (SD 2.0) i CAN install apps and restore Titanium backups
This is completely puzzling to me. I though that is probably hardware fault (internal sd or something else), but if on SD 2.0 everything works, and on Froyo builds not, it seems that is some kind of software error?
I suspect on some kind of folder permissions error. Does anybody know right permissions for internal system folder etc.?

Updating to official GB and retaining data?

Kind of new to the technical part of android here.
I have an Atrix running 4.1.8.3 with the following:
Rooted
Enabled Sideloading
SD Speed Hack
I have no other major system mods (no webtop mod, prom's, etc).
Here's my problem:
I don't want to lose my data/brick my phone.
How can I make a complete backup of every last thing on my phone? (Camera images, messages, ringtones, etc).
I have Titanium Backup installed that backs up apps, but is there a way to make sort of a "recovery image" or a mirror backup of my entire phone that I can flash?
Am I better off unlocking the BL first, and then flashing the sbf? (I know that this involves a factory reset in the process).
Or should I just use the OTA? My root, sideloading, and sd hack shouldn't interfere with the update, right?
Can I use the preinstall method to root my phone for GB, even though I'm rooted already? (Used gladroot)
I don't intend to jump into the custom ROM wagon just as yet, mainly because my job leaves me with no extra time to sit down and do it, restore my data, etc.
Today, I'm off though
Sorry for my noobishness, atleast I didn't post this in the development section
Thanks!

[Q] Verizon OTA update from Nov. 2011

My Thunderbolt received an OTA update last week and keeps rebooting. I have ClockworkMod Recovery so the Install fails. I cleared the Cache with CWM and restarted the phone like it suggests in other posts elsewhere. I get a failed update message, I cancel out of it and reboot the phone. I also used Titanium Backup to Freeze "Update" and "Updater", but the phone keeps self booting into the OTA update every day . I searched for an update.zip and cannot find one on the SD card.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the phone from updating/rebooting everyday? I cannot seems to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks and I wish everyone a safe holiday!
DD
Just to confirm, are you rooted but on the stock rom? If so, you should be able to find some threads to go on from searching, but here are a couple where people got the update install while rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330325
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324682
Sorry I forgot to mention it
Yes, I'm rooted, I'll check out the links.
more than likely you wont have an update.zip but rather an RUU. Remove the RUU from the SD card and see how that works. If I was having this problem I would do a full wipe on the phone backup my full SD card contents and format the SD card and flash a custom rom with CWM. I never understand what the point of rooting is if you are not going to flash a custom rom. Are you afraid? Worried about bricking? I just don't get it. Put the new MIUI on it. You will be pleased.
I installed Liquid ROM 3.1 and it's working like a charm. I was concerned about the 3G/4G compatability problems that most custom ROMS seem to have.
Using Titanium Backup Pro I backed up all my apps then restored them after installing Liquid ROM and re-setup the desktop and all is well.

Really? The ability to fix things like security holes, use ad filters, make complete, easily restorable backups, install a certificate for a private CA, or just have fairly complete control over hardware you've purchased isn't enough?

I was actually broken hearted that I was compelled in install a custom rom to avoid the problems the op has described. Everything "works" in standard rom. When you go custom you get lots of fun new features but you always lose something..... Could be vzw vvm or nfl live or fast gps lock or photo effects in gallery but it seems there is always someting you lose.

[Q] Does flashing stock rom back on replace the games?

I made a hash of rooting my phone after a number of posts said that backing up shouldn't be necessary (silly me). Once I had done the PG image flash I ended up with a version of Android that was missing all my games and the apps that I had previously installed. Data was still on the SD card but no sign of apks for the games. Not sure what other stuff might have been missing from 'out of the box' as it were but definitely Sims, NFS Shift and Spiderman 3D.
Before moving forward to try putting Leedroid on, I am considering trying to put one of the stock EU roms back over the top in the hope that it will give me access to the games, etc again so that I can do a backup and then try the whole rooting process all over again.
Could someone give me any idea of whether my games are gone forever or if I can salvage them somehow?
Your games and apps are gone. Before you flash any roms you really need to do a full wipe anyway so you're starting on a clean slate. A stock rom will have Spiderman in it though
We're comin from a pure power source.

Your game data (savegames) is likely gone for good. The game file might still be in your sd card. When I installed warm 2.3 I noticed a folder on my sd that has all those Sprint apps. I think some other roms might make a folder like that too. Just find the folder with a file explorer and install the app you want.

Short answer, if the apps were stored on the /data partition and the RUU erased the /data partition, they are probably gone forever.
Longer answer: To give a little technical background, there are specific partitions on most Android devices. The "data" partition is where many 3rd party apps are installed to, along with their settings and the Android OS settings.
A stock RUU will always erase the /data partition because as stock, the device comes with a blank data partition.
Some apps allow themselves to be installed to the sdcard. As such, these won't be erased when an RUU wipes the data partition. Some apps store their settings on the sdcard. These also won't be erased by an RUU.
Hope that helps fill in some of the gaps!

anything you bought from android market is linked to your google account not the phone so you can restore it after a wipe, after changing phone or even install them on multiple phones if they are registered to the same account.
just log on market.android.com, go to your library and force a reinstall for every piece of software you are missing.
things bought on other markets depend on the specific market policy, check with them.
as for those three games they comes with htc stock roms, I got them with an OTA update IIRCW so the only way to get them its if the rom compiler has included them (which I dont know if its legal, but lets not go there) or with a stock rom.
Really appreciate the replies guys. I have got my hands on the apks via a rom that was linked on the forums. I had hardly played them so losing save games isn't worry at all for me. Sadly I am not sure what else it might have wiped, I know I lost texts but I did have a backup .xml of those so only lost a few days worth.
The market is definitely confused because when I log onto android.market.com it shows all the ones I have downloaded but if I go into the market app on the phone it only shows the ones I have downloaded since the b0rked root.
No great loss though I think I am almost ready to shove a stock rom on and then restore the games later. Trying to decide between Leedroid and mikrunny's.

[Q] Unable to access Application Data from SD card after Factory Reset

Hello, first post here, I'll try to be as brief as possible.
Yesterday I tried to install a custom ROM on my device (HTC Evo 3D GSM Europe) for the first time and it took close to 12 hours to get it from ICS 4.0.4 to ICS 4.0.3 (when my intention was actually JB 4.2). I won't bore anyone with the details that's for another thread, let's just say that SOMEONE forgot to backup his Shipped ROM, then installed JB, was incompatible with the boot loader, tried desperately to find a compatible shipped RUU that worked with the CID, spent countless hours searching in xda-developers and then finally settled for a custom ICS ROM until some time in the future.
Now on to my problem. Prior to my Factory Reset, I had moved all applications to the SD card. A simple look-over in the file system indicates all the data is still there, but reinstalling the applications and even moving them back to the SD card doesn't seem to give them access to the prior data (saved games, stored profiles, lists and anything else I might have done). It's as if the app has been installed for the first time.
Is there any way to "link" the data back to the apps (after yesterday's endeavor I ended up with a rooted phone, at least, if that helps)?
Thanks. I couldn't find a question on the forums giving me a solution to this exact problem, only similar ones. Sorry if I overlooked anything.
Quasi-bump. I've done a bit of research (i.e. Google search) and apparently most apps store data and profiles on the internal storage. So I guess my question becomes "will my apps be able to access data from a previous installation if copied on the same storage system?".
