[Q] Terrible battery life - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The phone is 4 months old, I abused it at first (general usage + heavy games (dark knight rises, asphalt 7hd, deadzone, etc).
I then rooted it, installed custom roms eg FoxHound/WanamLite, used stock kernel until I tried Yank, Siyah and Boeffla. One of them, I can't remember which one, gave me about 24h battery time (over a month ago) with gps on, decent screen time (~2h-2.5h) wifi 40% of the time.
Now I don't know what happened but my phone just went mad. I barely get 10h with 1-2h screen time, mostly 3g, gps off, screen timeout 15s.
I am not using auto brightness anymore, I've got it set on the lowest by default, to make sure it stays at its darkest. I tried siyah with the extreme battery config. I'm now running boeffla with zzmove battery; all I adjusted was the sound profiles.
It drops by about 10% in 30 mins only from texting/browsing on wifi. My ram usage doesn't go pasy 650, it usually stays at ~580.

Hey
Give some more details like which rom you using and kernel.
Have you tried a different battery?
Plus have u gone back to the official firmware after facing battery issues?
Send from my Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300..!

If you have a custom recovery, wipe data, cache the whole bit...reinstall a fresh ROM..should solve the problem, seems the phone is awake more than it should...something went crazy software side...

I am currently using wanamlite 6.2 with boeffla kernel set on zzmove battery profile. I haven't tried a different battery and I had ~24h life with a custom rom based on the official firmware, FoxHound (not the official firmware).

I realized the phone stays in deep sleep for very little, about 5-6%.
I attached some screens, do you see anything that could cause this problem? I'd rather leave factory resetting as a very last resort ..

Having a serious problem with mini 2.22.30

Having some issues with the current ron on my phone.. some time ago I loaded miui.us 2.22.17 to my phone followed by siyah 2.3 and all was great in the world.
updated both rom and kernel and now my phone is a nightmare!
In on 2.22.30 miui.us with siyah 2.13 and my phone freezes constantly and gets really really hot.after a battery pull and reboot - the battery looses 900mah and all my Google services force close.. have made no changes beyond updating the ron and the kernel..
Additionally, Im wondering if something is wrong with the ron as battery consumption while on standby with Wi-Fi is on triples even when display is dimmed and background data as well as auto sync are turned off and the phone is in airplane mode. I thought battery calibration would solve this but hasn't changed a thing.. even while the phone is plugged in to charge the battery's draining (not charging) as long as Wi-Fi is on! Tested with 3 different chargers..
can anyone tell me what I can do to get these problems solved? Is flashing back to a Sammy based rom the only thing I can do?

Battery drain in flight mode even after wipe

Hello all,
my battery doesn't last as it used to and after checking, I can see even during the night, in flight mode, it is still losing around 20% per night.
I have GPS, WIFI, GSM off, I use Power Saving mode. I have no app installed.
It all started 3 weeks ago, I took my phone and it was surprisingly empty. Since then, my battery is crap.
Note that if I use the phone I can have more than 4 hours of screen time, but leaving the phone alone is killing the battery pretty quickly.
so far, these are all the steps I have tried without making any difference:
I have bought 2 new batteries
I have moved from stock 4.0.4 to Alliance rom 4.1.2
I have installed Jellybam 7.1 (4.2.2) without installing any app after flash
I have removed my SD card
I have disabled media scanner
I have calibrated my battery
I have reset the fuel gauge
I have flashed different kernel
I have monitored the battery usage with Better Battery Stats (dump attached in this post), and I can't see anything wrong (99.2% deep sleep)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know what to do else... and I'm starting to wonder if it could be a hardware issue with the phone itself...
if you have any idea, I'm all ready to listen and try them.
If you have the exact same issue, please join this thread and post your S2 model, hardware version and steps you have tried.
If you are in the same case, did you have this issue happening suddenly ?
mine:
S2 GT-I9100
HARDWARE: smdk4210
also if you have a s2 and can comment of your battery stats during night in flight mode, it would be great so we can compare.
Thank you

Thanks pi-xel:
Some new observations,
I might have found something else, this led me to do the following experiment:
- Disable radio (airplane mode)
- Enable radio with data (WiFi disabled," 2G only" on)
- Turn screen off immediately after enabling
- Put phone *really* close to your ear as if making a call
What I experienced then were some very quiet, but still existent, clicking sounds coming out of the speaker that you might know from holding a phone close to a speaker when receiving a call or short message. I don't know whether this is regular behavior, but I would assume that the speaker should be turned off when not in use.
As I am not sure whether it should be like this, I would kindly ask users with and without our battery problem to reproduce the steps of my experiment and report their experience.
Thanks in advance!
Re: Battery drain in flight mode around 3%/hour
Just for the prove of it, go back to your ics backup for a day...
Use speedmod kernel on both,(assuming stock Rom).
It's not hardware..

Hi,
I had the issue with stock 4.0.4, this is mainly why I tried other ROMs.
I had stock 4.0.4 since around last summer, but the battery issue started 3 weeks ago, and still occurs even on a newly flashed ROM without anything installed.

Okay,I see, since you are on Stock, try the speedmod kernel.
Bbs shows your phone sleeps like a baby, my s2 consumes almost nothing in flightmode, even on android 4.2.2, I wonder if a dmesg could point to something..
Can you rule out the battery?

Hi,
thanks for helping,
I'm not anymore on stock 4.0.4, I'm currently trying my luck on Jellybam 4.2.2.
and like I said, I tried also on Alliance rom (so again, a different kernel) but same issue.
I think the battery can be ruled out as I bought 2 new batteries and it is still the same.
I'm having similar issues with the following setup:
Device: GT-i9100 (SGS2)
Rom: Rootbox Nightly 23.03. (Android 4.2.2, tried several 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 stock and CM/AOKP based roms)
Kernel: Dorimanx 9.12 (tried several dori + siyah + stock kernels)
Modem: XXLS8 (tried a whole bunch of different modems)
Battery: brand new original Samsung 2000mAh (tried 2 different 1600mAh stock batteries as well)
Carrier: Lebara over KPN Netherlands and O2 Germany
With all combinations I experience ~3%/h battery drainage, even in airplane mode. In airplane mode, my deep sleep ratio is around 98-99% as well.
However, it seems that removing my SD card led to some improvement in the drainage (not perfect, though). If you don't see any improvement by doing the same, maybe the issue is related to some files being stored on internal and/or external SD card (could it be that some wakelocks / processes related to media scanner service are simply not reported correctly in recent Android versions?). Did you try formatting both?
Besides, I see a high percentage of the battery wasted on phone radio (in Android battery monitor and in GSAM battery mon, that led me to try out many different modems - with no improvement). When I switch on airplane mode, this entry disappears but the overall drainage remains. Could it be that all the drainage that cannot be explicitly related to some process / part of the phone is collected in "phone radio"?

the SD is a good point, I'm ready to install the ROM again if I know how to delete all the files on the phone.
I did a wipe data, cache et dalvik cache before installing, but it is true I still have some files lying around...
You can format internal and external storage from CWM recovery (I would also backup all files to PC before doing this). Unfortunately, I currently need a navigation app on my phone on a daily basis, that has all the map files on my internal storage. Hence I cannot test it myself. But I'm looking forward to your evaluation

I'm going to remove my SD first before doing something I could regret
Do I need to reinstall the ROM after formating the internal storage ?
If the problem is really related to some files on internal or external storage, my guess is that you don't have to reinstall your rom. I would suggest to try removing external SD first, if this does not help, format internal storage, and if this does not help as well, then we should consider to do a clean install with empty internal and no external storage.
ok I did it... full wipe of everything.
My internal storage is completely empty, 11.48GB available out of 11.49.
I have removed the SD too et I have installed only BBS... tomorrow morning, we will see how many % are gone...

Ok, false alarm. I wiped my internal storage and removed ext SD. Then I put my phone into flight mode and left it alone overnight. The drainage does not seem to have improved (see new dump). What is interesting though is that the drainage does not change much between flight mode with 99% deep sleep on the one hand and sync with radio and wifi on and heavier network load over day with 96% deep sleep on the other. The difference is only around 0.3-0.5%/h. So there seems to be some constant source of drainage that is independent of phone activity.
But one more thing: I think you have made a very interesting observation: Although the battery drainage when screen off is huge, our screen on time still seems to be pretty good. My analysis is that if there were something draining the battery that should not be there when screen is off AND on, the 3%/h which we see during deep sleep would add up to our screen on consumption and thereby decrease our screen on time as well.
Thus my guess is that our battery problem is related to some component that should be on during screen on and that does not switch off properly when screen is off (eg. screen or GPU).
What are your thoughts on this?

Hmm, I think this should be visible as surfacelinger wakelock then (touch remains active)
Maybe it's smartstay...
To be honest I have no clue...

ok, after wiping everything and flashing a new ROM (Jellybam 7.1), I have removed my SD, switched off wifi, gps, put my mobile in flight mode and left the mobile during the night. This morning, same again:
Level lost [%]: Bat.: -19% (84% to 65%) [3.1%/h]
I have attached my BBS dump file and a screenshot of the battery graph.
1 thing is very weird.. even if BBS says I have 99.8% deep sleep, I can see on the battery graph long period of Awake...
If I check the same with GSAM, the Awake is not displayed... so it is like the default android app see something more or is simply wrong...
have a look at the screenshot and the BBS dump:
I can confirm the long awake periods in Android battery graph. And I don't think that we have smartstay on SGS2, or am I wrong?

no we don't with stock rom 4.0.4 (and I still had the issue), but we do with stock 4.1.2 and some sammy based rom.
In my current rom, I don't have smartstay... and still have the issue of course...
do you see any difference on the graph at the exact same time as the awake shows ?
@megosu: What do you mean by "difference in the graph"?
@karpfenhai: As far as I understand, you also use GT-i9100, but don't have the issues we are experiencing. Could you maybe provide us with a BBS dump from your phone + a screenshot from Android battery monitor so that we can look for differences (if any)?
I mean, do you see the graph decreasing more quickly in your history at the same time it was "awake" ?

i9300 Battery Struggle!

Hi All!
First I want to thank you guys here, I've learned everything about Android through this forum and others.
But I am facing a weird issue here.
I am running LiquidSmooth 2.5 Official Used to be on CM 10.1's Nightlies
and on The Siyah 1.9.1
I have tried everything to keep my battery fine, but its not working.
Here Are the issues:
1- When doing a HR, if battery level is 100%, it goes down to 3 or 4% and phone reboots multiple times atleast 5-7 until it works fine again, and i have to recharge the battery again. DRIVES ME NUTS
2- The charging is pretty slow now, 5 6 hours would get me to a 70% and not a 100, Tried all ways to charge, and charger and battery are working fine on other phones. though the iPhone Power Brick charged it a bit faster it took about 2 hours to a 100.
3- Discharging is pretty DAMN Fast. it would take the phone 3-4 hours of use MAX and I am out of battery on the 3G and 5-6 on WiFi, I lose about 2 percent every 2-3 Minutes. and when Idle or in DeepSleep which I am sure the phone goes to according to ''BetterBatteryStats'' it would last 7 Hours at best.
4- If Charging the Phone and using, the Battery level still goes down, until it reaches 1% then screen flickers and goes Off and i have to wait for the battery to regain charge on the boot screen with the Battery icon and the Yellow Exclamation Mark, and then After 4% I can reboot the phone, and that cycle would go on and on.
here are the Solutions I Tried:
Flashed CM 10.1 with stock Kernel and with Siyah (Updated Software Everynight)
Flashed LiquidSmooth 2.5 with stock Kernel and with Siyah.
Tried Different CPU Governors (Pegasuq, and Hotplug)
Turned off Unneeded process like (GPS and so on)
Used Different Chargers, Batteries and charging ways that work fine with any other S3 that is running on TouchWiz.
Calibrated Battery by letting it Discharge to 0% then charging to 100% uninterrupted.
I Ran out of solutions, so If someone could please HELP!! :")
Hi there Omar,
1, what exactly do you mean by hard reset ?
2. have you tried a different charger ? or a different charging port ?
3. that is indeed not the best battery life, could you tell us what app's use your battery?
It can be viewed in settings>battery
4. same as 3..
Hard Reset as in Remove the battery while phone is on, or Pressing Volume+ and Power Button.
I Tried 3 Different chargers, Sony Xperia Z, iPhone 5 (Charged it a Bit Faster) and Google Nexus 4 Besides Mine.
I dont have too many apps, actually I Uninstalled most of my apps that wake up the phone from deep sleep like Kik but What mostly uses my battery is Maps While i Dont Use it, 14% and Shazam while not in use also 12%, and the screen ofcourse 24% those are the three top consumers.
Iphone 5 ?? how did you connected it to you s3 ?
ok HR is usually referred when you factory reset your phone, that's just rebooting
But I agree it's not a normal behaviour to fall by 95% each time you pull the battery. What rom are you currently running? are you rooted ?
By the way there aren't really advantages in this kind of reboot FYI.
If you don't use the google maps i suggest disabling it via settings>apps>maps - disable.
Same about shazam try maybe another app like "soundhound" or sony "trackid"
iPhone 5 Power brick and My S3 USB Cable.
I Did disable them.
But still after working on everything I've tried most solutions and nothing is working with it!
Oh ok it's clear now
What about your phone state ? are you running stock/custom rom ?
I am running Liquidsmooth 2.5 Official and Siyah 1.9 Kernel
I Used the Liquidsmooth without the Custom kernel, only its stock one.
and Before I Had CM 10.1 Nightly with the stock Kernel and also with Siyah
Same problem with all combinations, and I Switched to Liquidsmooth because I thought the issue was from the Instability of CM 10.1 due to that its experimental, but seems not.
Well from my experience there are few cm10.1 builds that are working very good, so i guess it's not the problem.
Why not backup your rom and reinstall it(or another one from the development section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1566)
Don't forget when backing up do not backup any system app only user app.

[Q] huge battery drain with Phil-Z and Dorimanx kernel but not with Siyah

Hello,
I was using stock 4.1.2 rom for my i9100 with Siyah 6.05b kernel.
I decided to try NeatRom to get rid of most of the crap-ware in the stock ROM.
So far so good. But the problem with the battery started here:
I charged the phone to 100%.
After a few (2-3) hours, battery shows 95%.
Phone suddenly died like battery is empty.
I am unable to turn it on with the power button.
If I remove the battery for 2-3 minutes - the phone boots but the battery shows 75%.
Two-Three hours more and my phone is completely discharged.
I used BetterBatteryStats but there are no major Wakelockers. Everything looks fine.
I also used CPU Spy to monitor deep sleep state. Everything looks fine here too.
I decided to give Dorimanx kernel a try. Same problem - huge battery drain. (extreme_battery profile used)
At that time I thought that the problem is in NeatRom itself, and I decided to install my old Siyah kernel before I go to stock ROM.
Surprise surprise everything is back to normal - 24 hours+ battery time.
So the conclusion is that I have huge battery drain with Phil-Z and Dorimanx kernels.
Maybe they have some driver or feature that drains my battery without visible process that keeps my phone wakelocked.
I am open to try any suggestions to fix this issue. I want to try Dorimanx because I heard it should have even better performance and battery than Siyah.
Thanks
I think DorimanX is the best kernel ever created, go ahead and use it

Buddy all kernels are best . It depends on how you use your phone.
If you are using apps like Viber, facebook these apps were running continuously which is the main reason of draining battery . So you must greenify these apps and install Battery Monitor and check which app is using more battery.
Try Apollo kernel . As Dorimanx kernel will not as smooth as Philz.

Neatrom for me has great battery life Im getting 7hr screen on time! With the stock kernel. Are you on the latest version 5.3.1? Give the battery afew cycles and it should sort its self out. Defo not rom related.
Best for stock is the Apolo Kernel in 4.12 Version of speed.
The most mistakes are:
Do you make a wipe/fullwipe before installation?
Do you make a factoryreset after flashing?

Haven't tried Apolo yet.
I do full wipe of all possible partitions:
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Format system
Format preload
I also disabled restoring my applications from google play's backup.
The only thing I don't wipe is SD card. Maybe it has some information left that may cause battery drain.
With default NeatRom kernel - PhilZ and with Dormanx kernel, my battery discharge very very fast, but when I flash Siyah - my battery is OK again (24 hours+).
What could it be?!
Install gsam battery monitor, and try apolo kernel. Neat + apolo = stable, battery friendly, smoth rom for sgs II
apolo 4.12
BBS screenshot with Apolo 4.12
The only thing that bothers me now is that I get only 9000 points on AnTuTu Benchmark while other people with SGS2 get 11000 points.. Strange.
How comes when the phones are the same?!
PS. Looks like I had to turn off Power Saving Mode. Now I got 11067 points in AnTuTu Benchmark.

[Q] Very Low Battery on Intl S3 Latest MK7 rooted 4.3 +Pics HELP

Please post your battery drain charts here to compare on 4.3.
I am facing battery drain issue from the day i installed some custom roms and i changed back to stock from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 to 4.3 latest I9300XXUGMK7.
I am rooted, installed facebook , whatsapp , and some photo apps & games too.
hardly i used it for a 2d game for 7 mins, and you can see battery stats in photos.
Is it something left that Odin does not flashes??? or the screen takes too much battery (im on auto +5 always)
I Pasted EFS partition Data 2 times between custom roms because of imei error on some roms including going back to stock rom.
I see some high ones : chrome taking 10% , android system 10%, Screen 39% and rest are low.
I checked with wakelock detector that facebook is waked device for 175 times. but not showing major in battery status.
I checked my cell standby overnight after charging without using, its 5% in 10 hours.
I have another s3 stock battery dated 2013 and my was from 2012 dec. On both batteries the drain remains same.
Can someone provide me any solution?
Hardly i used mobile screen for 2 hours total.
I'm a power user and understand everything abt android.

First, MK7 build doesn't considered the lastest available (which is NA7).
Second, there are some reports on noticed battery drain in stock MK7, so your use case matches the overall average with this build.
Solutions:
1- (If from some reason, you prefer to stay with this stock build): Use greenify in order to hibernate unwanted apps, disable Sync, make sure that wifi isn't on 'always scan' mode and disable location services.
2- flash newest NA7 build.
3- Use custom rom (the newest Sammy's Neatrom is just awesome), and if you don't like what you get- use adjustable kernels (such as Boeffla) to suit your needs
