Hello.
I'm having fun with all your awesome stuff here, but I have a few questions.
Currently I'm running Philz Touch Recovery, ARHD 23.2 ROM cleaned with Rom Cleaner, w/ Nova Launcher & Perseus kernel
Q1: Is it possible to somehow protect recovery options, for example with pin or password? I didn't find such option in Philz recovery, and actually didn't test anything apart from that.
Q2: "Rooting" the phone is basically flashing a custom recovery with Odin, so it gives you additional options like reflashing rom etc. Of couse if I'm flashing already rooted rom. Am I right?
Q3: Is a full wipe, including wipe & format of /data /system /preload and /cache the "maximum" of available "cleaning" the old rom? Is there anything else to delete?
Q4: What do you guys think about latest (official 4.1.2) ARHD vs Omega? I know that there isn't a "best rom" for everyone, I just want to get some opinions from users.
Q5: Is there anything else interesting to do with SGS3? Any must-be app, tweak or something like that?
Thank you.

Custom recovery does not give root though many are a comined flash .

Okay sorry for Q4 and thank you for answers.
Q5: Is any action required with changing recovery from Philz to TWRP? I don't want to leave any leftovers, junk files etc.
Nevermind, it's just an .img file .
R: [Q] Some questions about SGS3
No action to change recovery, just flash. Even though i would keep philz, whos gonna boot up your recovery (who even knows how...i know one or two people in person that know how, and even though i wouldnt leave my phone alone with them, why would anyone get the crave for flashing my phone thru recovery? plus i always have a recent backup...)
im not gonna make any comparisons but for me best rom for s3 now is foxhound, its fully customizable and got tons of feature (cuz it combines those of all other roms).
Cool apps or mods?
Let me think...
Theres ink effect mod for android 4.2.1+ only though
Theres syiah kernel orbootanimation mods..
Apps(HERE COMES MY ARSENAL, BEST APPS IVE GOT, ALL OF THEM INSTALLED ON MY PHONE:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:)
Theres screencast, rom manager, cpu master, titanium backup, pimp my rom, rom toolbox, goo manager, autorun manager, send to sd card (VERY useful, use it to save images off facebook, best method there is), android assistant, home manager, super manager, screendim, locale picker(find it on web, it changes your nationality its useful to trick google play or apps that require u to be in another country),
Boat browser, orbot(its tor for pc), faster downloads(best internet download manager apps, faster downloads from multiple connections), vget(stream videos from ANY website, i found this app casually, and it was a miracle...unfortunately not very popular, but best one of its kind i assure u), ttorrent pro, catch(note taking app, best one i think), radaee pdf(best one, definitively best one for its features and locked horizontal movement and stuff and for learning c in class while teacher is explaining), file manager (rhytm studios i think), smart office 2, mx player, unrar pro(MUST HAVE! FASTEST extraction app out there IF u have the pro version, takes FULL advantage of my quad core cpu, really fast extractions with this baby), printershare(print to any printer), alatino(translated lating texts for italian students:thumbup, wikidroyd(wikipedia offline, external sd card also), peliculas(streaming in many languages also hd, much like youtube works 90% of times, you just need to wait initial 40secs and have fast connection), tubemate(permanent cache/download videos off youtube), sygic, songza(music stream), wallpaper wizard(never have to resize wallpaper again!), gamecih(androids cheat engine app), double twist(great and simple music player, maybe better than the much loved poweramp), tasker(assign to android ANY task at ANY given time, or setup profiles of tasks!), draw rider+(cool little bike with stickman game, hard to beat), ics gallery(best image viewing app, simply cause it allows you to hide images by selecting an album and hitting hide, looked for it long before trying this old yet efficient app), flipboard, google currents, hf scientific calculator, + some warez apps i cant put here, gonna pm you.

Special thanks to the creator of the item inexus from which inspired me to give a graphic touch to the rom.
This rom (not a mod) has been developed entirely from the source of Google and very little of Cyanogen framework.
Thanks to Cyanogen and all his staff for the contributions received.
Is installed from the recovery, as always, do not worry if it takes a while to leave the first splash is entirely normal and configuration files running on first boot.
I strongly recommend formatting SDCARD total with three partitions, SDCARD 7.4 GB / EXT3 512MB / LinuxSwap 64MB, you can do from the recovery, but remember to keep you before your pictures and music. This is because directories are created in the sdcard called Android which are recorded in the data I have found to negatively affect the rom. PROVEN!,
This is only necessary in case you want to have Apps2sd or Linux Swap, if not going to do any of those things is not necessary to format the Sdcard with three partitions.
WARNING!
Only if you come from different roms (Donut, Eclair, Froyo) is necessary to WIPE, when coding in Gingerbread from this rom will not need to wipe again to install later roms.
This rom installs itself alone, that is completely reconfigures.
Before installing the rom Wipe recommend because it has many changes. When installed and out of recovery by restarting leave untouched while the LED flashes. At this point I recommend you salteis the account settings to skip giving google and once in the launcher and set podreis rom to your liking. This is because otherwise the phone will Autoconnect the market and begin to automatically download all the applications you had installed and it saturates the terminal because it does hit, besides putting the background image that you had prior to the rom and then you ask me that as it is possible that if I install the rom to wipe the bottom appears to me that I had before. In this way you will do a clean install. Then you enter the market and instalais a free application to refresh anyone that you have installed in the terminal.
Very attentive to you to do restorations of any kind against the rom or program that you can have problems. (I mean backups, including their own SupSetup least in the section on applications), special attention to restore configuration data of any kind. Under the best not to doubt.
SupSetup new V16 in all roms, not serve any previous SupSetup for this rom
The new integrated SupSetup activation brings on-demand applications in the applications section extras, you can enable applications that interest you as the Roma comes in "Lite" (without extra applications installed) so that everyone can choose the best configuration.
It is important before you set up Google account to be activated from applications before SupSetup so that when you connect to the servers to configure your Google account, they enter the downloads section.
After entering the market and to display applications install any application downloads for cool downloads.
Apps2sd
Apps2sd is to pass the phone applications both current and future to the ext3 partition, it is imperative not to activate any way to move application to the sd or change from internal to external location application. Simply activate it from the SupSetup without touching any configuration in the Spare Parts or applications from the rom settings.
Apps2sd not activate without at least once you have restarted
General
- Rom in "LITE"
- New graphical look different from SuperGinger's
- All you had the SuperGinger but since source of non-Cyano Google
Added

A rom much lighter than any other that you were able to prove, you could say that is the Nexus CSDI One (this rom Magic gave a lot to talk), completely stable and trouble-free calls or anything known, at least tests we are doing we have not yet found any fault.
Applications
- You can install more from the extra applications SupSetup
- Google Apps

Some apps won't install- Angry Birds, Aldiko eBook Reader. Then sometimes after a reboot, there are no apps installed at all, until I reboot again
Hello, I'm a new member here. Been reading for the past few days on this forum and I have a few questions.
First of all I have my phone for a month now and I got fed up with the little internal space, so about 4 days ago I decided to Root my phone with the "upd_1.zip" file. After that I flashed the CWM4 on it and whiped my battery data.
I meanwhile bought titanium backup also and moved few not so essential apps to the sd card via titanium backup (im not sure if this creates the needed partition on the SD card or not though? do i need to do it proprerly or is it good as is?)
To get to the point:
My main problem is that the phone since it got rooted started to "forget" it's settings... mainly what bugs me is the Contacts get unlinked every time i reboot the phone, accounts get unlinked, my adw launcher forgets it's theme (this also happens without reboot), my yahoo email doesn't notify me properly, and apps in general don't seem to work properly anymore... (i also thought it might be from the app move to sd card, but i left the launcher for example on the phone, also haven't touched the contacts app...so i don't know)
How can I fix this? Will a new ROM help me fix these problems?
If yes, can you recommend me any good roms? I was looking a lot at cyanogen mod and ice cream sunday, but i cannot decide which one to get because i'm not sure which one is the most stable one of them?
What matters most for me in a rom is probably to be stable without too many bugs, to run flash if possible and to be more responsive than my current stock 2.3.3 rom. I don't really use the stock apps/gps stuff either, except maybe the youtube app, camera and the market app
My other request is please someone write down how to install a damn rom for noobs without any abreviations because the developers' install description is really vague and abstract in many cases (for the Cyanogen mod or ICSunday please)
My phone runs:
S5840XWKP6
kernel
2.6.35.7-perf-CL313173
[email protected]#1
GB.XWKPJ
Thanks, Joker
Hello Mate
Whatever custom ROM you flash to will have a bug or two but they aren't anything serious thats just the thing with custom Rom's.
Installing Rom's is very easy as long as your phone is rooted (as you have already done) and you have CWM (clockwork mod recovery tool 5.xx not 4.xx) as you have said. There is a problem with CWM 4.xx with the Galaxy Ace it tends not to work properly.
All Rom's are downloaded from links on this website, copied to your SD card as a zip file (which it's downloaded as) then applied by using the CWM tool which appears in your apps after you have installed it.
There are lots of step by step instructions of how to do this just google "how to root galaxy ace" or "how to install CWM 5" or "how to install custom ROM" do you get my drift?
I'm using custom Ice cream sunday CM7.2 from the development section of this forum. It's fast got only what you need in a Rom and has hardly any bugs.
Do some reading my friend i've flashed my phone about 50 in the 2 months i've had it just testing ROM's but i like the one i have now.
Cool, thanks for the reply mate, do u have any idea about the problem i'm having lately by losing my settings?
I was asking for the how to flash guide because of statements like these:
"then install zip
after install, go through set up then set oc if you use and any other settings then reboot."
which makes no sense to me, go through what set up and what's an OC... and what other settings?.... get my drift?
And i'm currently downloading "theMyth" rom to test out... hope it turns out, it'll be my first custom rom
If your using clock work mod 4, it's not saving anything because it doesn't work with the galaxy ace i only found out after it messed up my phone and of course the back up of my settings didn't work!
OC means over clocked cpu application, yes you can over clock the cpu just the same as a pc or laptop make it run faster etc but it's not advised unless you know what your doing or you could fry it.
You definately need CWM 5 installed before you go flashing any new roms. Also have a good read of the reviews for a ROM before you try it etc that gives you all the info you need to know if you will get on with it or not.
uhm yeah... just flashed themyth on my phone and redownloaded titanium backup and it doesn't show up on my apps list, wtf
Make sure your installing apps to your phone and not your SD card??
Also check CWM has changed to version 5xx etc.
still if i would be installing to my sd card shouldn't it show up on my app draws or whatever it's called? on market i don't have "open" option only "uninstall"
Ahh yes i had this problem. Some custom roms need google apps (gapps) installed for your phone to receive stuff from the market.
Do you see the Andriod Market App? Can you sign in?
this is what i was telling you earlier depending on whos Rom you are installing depends what things they've taken out or left in. If it's taken out you have to download some or the apps again to get other things to work.
yup... i redownloaded it from the market, but "open" wouldn't show up, luckily i had the app on my dropbox too and i managed to start the restore apps on it now, im curious what happens when restore will finish
it worked afterall, im happy atm
cool mate you will learn alot by trying different roms but the basic process for flashing is always the same.
Hi guys!
I've been reading your comments on this thread and now i have a lot of questions!:
1) I have installed 4.0.0.9 but according to cooltt it's better CWM 5.x.x, how i can install it now?
2) I thought like jokerman170 to install TheMythICS but now i seeing that he has had problems, how you solved it? Which version you downloaded?
thanks in advanced!!
u can flash it just like the 4, i don't really like this rom, looks like a stupid theme and i got 256 rating on quadrant :| wtf
i downlaoded the TheMyth beta 2 full
icsunday2 here i come
icsunday2 it's difficult to install for a newbie like me and some people have had problems with this rom.
Why TheMyth is bad?
sorry for my english
it wasn't too fast and was kinda buggy and low quality imo, ICSunday is cool, but can't really log onto my wi-fi yet, working on it now
EDIT: worked with second try, really impressed with ICS2 atm
Okay mate
Ok guys thing is installing icsunday is not tough but u didn't understand what to do.mmmmm use cwm 5 for icsunday and icsunday2 is best rom ever.

plzzzz hit thanks if I helped you in any means .......
i did use the 5, cause the Myth rom upgrades it for you
Btw could you check out my other thread that i just started.... im kind of a retard...
Hey guys I'm pretty new here and i wanted to get some feedback, did not find any similar topics around.
I want to root my NT 16gb but i see a lot of different methods and ways to perform it, whats the best way of going?
CM9 or CM7?
Easiest method to do it?
i got a 16gb microSD also!
Any opinions?
THANK YOU!
Rooting and applying a custom rom like cm7 or cm9 do not necessarily go together, an unfortunate assumption many new android users make. The former allows you root access and thus you can do things with the device you otherwise would not have been able to do. Flashing a custom rom will literally change the operating system entirely. Both are also completely reversible. So the question is, what do you want? Root access or a new OS entirely (note that custom roms almost always have root access).

I'm fairly new at this also, got my 16G NT (1.4.1) a couple days ago, and I'll tell you what I did. At first, I rooted it because I wanted (at least) access to the Kindle reader, but the google market/play is not available so B&N could control it. Rooting AND installing google apps (aka gapps) give you the market and more. From there you can install the go launcher and have a pretty nice overlay that looks ICS-like. Here's what I used and it seemed to go pretty smooth:
Part 1:
This thread by the developer Indirect shows how to do the root along with gaaps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
And here is an invaluable video from albertwertz that goes along with it. This helped me get the confidence to do it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I403bagL9rw
He has an update to this show at the beginning of the video, but I did not use that.
The secret sauce is in making a bootable SD card with both the image that gives you CWM (clockworks mod), which is basically a loader that allow you to then load the .zip file which contains the root and gapps files.
After I went through the process, nothing seemed to have changed at all on the NT, but after some head scratching I realized that gapps is the key and it had in fact been loaded. So hit the home button and then search and type in market. Voila, the google market is now there and you can download anything that is compatible with the NT (like kindle and the go launcher).
Part 2.
The go launcher is great, but everytime I hit home, I had to navigate to the go launcher and launch the nicer ics-like skin, so I decided to go for CM9. I'm not at all disappointed that I did. Netflix does not work, but seemingly everything else does and does nicely. Here's how:
Basically, you just need to get the CM9.003 file, and "flash" that just as you flashed the root and google apps zip. I'm sure you have figured out by now that flashing just means loading the new program into "flash" memory, which is just a read/write memory that is non-volatile. (does not erase at power down).
What I wound up up doing is placing the CM9 zip file on a separate SD card, then used the one I originally used for rooting to get into the CWM recovery program. Once there, pop it out and insert the CM9 zip and run that one from CWM. Reboot and you're running Android 4.0.4.
Here's the link for the CM9 install, courtesy of developer chrmhoffmann:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534192
Here's a link to the CM9 zip:
http://goo.im/devs/chrmhoffmann/cm9/update-cm9-acclaim-alpha0.03-fullofbugs.zip
One more thing: You actually should put two zips on that 2nd SD, the 2nd one being google apps (aka gapps), as for some reason it is not included in the CM9 zip as it was in step 1. Here's the link to that file:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
It's the app for CM9, and just in case, here's the download link:
http://cmw.22aaf3.com/gapps/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip
So now you have 2 zips on the 2nd SD card. Run them both, first the CM9 zip and then the gapps zip, reboot.
Sorry that's so long, but that's what I did and it worked out well for me once I figured it out...
---------- Post added at 04:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:07 PM ----------
One more thing. When you get into the CWM recovery program (the one you'll see when you boot from the 1st SD card, don't forget to run a backup of the original ROM, IE the factory version in case you want to go back.
I'm not an expert on the backup and recover process, and there apparently other ways to restore to the original NT 1.4.0 or 1.4.1, but I would do that anyway...
I wanted to say "very good" ! . and a note that i think should be added... is the importance of wiping the dalvik and the data cache within the flash process. . lots of people get clobbered by this ommission.

Allow me to explain. Gapps, or google apps are a seperate package of apps created by google. They are not apps that are included with "pure" Android and thus Google does not want them included with roms for whatever legal reasons. They were included in the step 1 you gave because that is simply rooting. Rooting and throwing apps onto a rom like the stock version is not flashing a custom ROM. In fact its no different than if a developer were to release a custom rom that didnt have root access, but someone wrote a script that gave you root access and installed those google apps.
tl;dr gapps are legally required to be a separate package from custom roms.
Hi Guys
I have decided my first Rom will be Omega.. hoping I an keep it for ages as I dont relish jumping from ROM to ROM.
I have read lots of posts about Omega and the official thread but I still cant seem to find a complete step by step installation guide.
is the newest version v28? it says on the thread (Indies thread)
Please read the following before flashing v28:
1. Make sure to make and keep in a safe place an efs backup, in case you need to restore it.
Uderstood
2. If you want to flash theme or kernel, please make sure first they are compatible with Jelly Bean Omega
Understood
3. Please update Omega Files to v1.03 from Play Store More additions to v1.03 will be added soon.
I have to download the Omega Files app BEFORE flashing the ROM?
4. Get New Play Store from here: Play Store v3.9.16 - install via CWM Recovery
Fine but when do I flash this? before or after flashing the ROM
5. Contacts mod with Greek index, download from here and flash it with CWM Recovery.
Dont know what this is about?
Ok clicked the link in the sig to be taken to where the Omege Roms are, there is JB and one for ICS. i assum its the JB one i go for if i want JB
do I flash using Odin or do I boot to recover and install from SD?

Hi
Dl the omega .zip file, then flash it via the recovery.
The kitchen app must be updated after the flash. For the playstore, it's the same flash it after.
I don't know about the contacts. Maybe someone else can help you.
Don't worry, it's very simple with this rom, moreover you got AROMA so you will be able to choose some option at the installation.

3. If this is your first Omega install, then simply update the Omega Files App through playstore once your Omega install has been complete.
4. You can flash the playstore at any point before or after. I would suggest after you have installed Omega Rom.

however even though i went for the Bloatware removal installation and i did a factory reset through cwm recovery, then wiped cache then delvik cache, under storage it says i just have 6.5gb remaining even though the list above adds up to nothing really due to bloatware removal. seems the storage for my phone prior to flashing rom is still stored somehow?
Any thoughts on why and how i can fix this?
edit just installed es file explorer and under SD card all my apps are there prior to flashing ROM, although not showing in dock
I just deleted everything manually of the SF card
is Omega v28 supposed to be only have 11GB total space even wIth the bloat ware removed.mine shows 11GB free now thought it would be n more though
I am really looking the ROM though, quite slick.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
11gb sounds about right. It doesn't sound like the factory reset worked 100%.
Sounds like you got it sorted now.
Now enjoy adding themes and mods!

I am indeed
Just flashed Siyah Kernal, 15 toggles (love it), and Blue theme..
I need to just get my head around the Stweaks now so I can sensibly try some overclocking.. saw a guy on youtube who has this overclocking pull down notification with a nifty little schedule that could overclock/underclock depending on the situation. I'd love to know if that is something available through the Omega ROM?
Haven't heard of that app personally. ...
I have undervoted my phone to -50v and very impressed with battery life. Generally get 5+ hrs of screen time and 2 days on 1 charge.
Haven't tried overclocking as it runs smooth as is
Not sure which blue theme but give motomoto blue a go if your not using that 1
Sent from my Jelly Omega SIII using XDA App
Yes its Mottomoto I haev installed. love it.
the overclock app I saw that lets you set profiles is called Android Overclock from Playstore. Its not free though its £1.49. looks like the one i saw though.. havent bought it. i'll see what I can do from the Stweaks first once I figure out how to use it
Once problem and it seems the only problem I see is that the battery life has depleted to 60 % since 7am. thats just a bit of browsing and installing the Siyah Kernal and Mottomoto theme and 15 toggles.
Normally I play resource intensive games on a 40 minute commute, plus calls, internet and streaming to spotify and on stock I would have close to 80% by the 9am.. and maybe 75% by now. so seems to be depleting rather fast. All connections off, sync off and auto brightness set to minimum..
any thoughts?.. I am using the Siyah Kernel from the Omege Kitchen.
Just a noob sharing some thoughts, hope it can help some other noobs like me.
A no wipe in my book:
Here is how i do a no wipe.
In recovery, mount and storage and choose format system.
Go back and wipe Cache and Dalvik
Install / flash the rom.
A full wipe in my book:
Into recovery, mount and storage and format system, data and cache.
Go back, wipe/ reset data, cache and dalvik.
Install/flash rom
Format of the internal SD:
Here is what i do:
Make a app backup with TB to my external sd
Make a nandroid to my external sd
Make sure i also have a efs backup on my external sd
I only save mods, roms on my internal sd in my download map and this map i move to my external sd.
Then i reboot to recovery.
Mount and storage and format internal sd.
And to be save and have it nice a clean, also format system, data and cache and because i am not only a flashohalic but also a cleanohalic, i then wipe/reset factory reset, cache and dalvik.
Probably a big overkill, but he, done it several times it works for my and it only cause a few seconds.
Then i reboot, skip the setup/registration, move my download map back to my internal sd (don't like flashing from external sd).
Back in cwm, again a full wipe which includes the formats data, system and cache.
Then flash the rom and setting it up.
This way, you have a nice clean fresh S3, but and this is a big BUT.
Backup, backup backup and don't forget a efs backup to your external sd and pc.
Don't think lightly about those backups, when imei is broken and you don't have a backup, your a done, only thing left is a visit to Samsung.
Good luck when you are going for it.
And i know, Aroma installer is also doing some automatic wiping, but i am just a bit old fashion and like to do some stuff manually.
Bootloader.
As you all know, the new bootloader can be a pain in the ass.
But, i am still not sure that Samsung only released the new bootloader just to discourages us to flash custom stuff.
So, if you like flashing stuff and you are on the new bootloader like me, just remember when you entered recovery and you are done flashing stuff, use Triangle Away from Chainfire,
But, for some, like on my wifes phone, the latest version works without problem, but on my S3, i need to use the older version, 2.37, why, don't have a glue.
Not all S3 are the same, although have the same name and using the same chipsets.
But you can also use the old bootloaders, with does, you just have to run Triangle Away just once, when entering recovery, it will not count.
Your own choose.
About Sudden Death.
A lot of threads are open for this.
My 5 cents:
I have the "sudden Death" chips VTU00M chip with 0xf1 on both our phones.
Mine is running since 27 may 2012 without problems, still fast and smooth.
The other is up and running since 31 Augustus 2012 and also still fast and smooth.
Both have been rooted from day one, the only thing i do, is turning the devices off completely for a few minutes 4 to 5 times a week.
Old habit to clear memory, anyway, gives me time to do a good cleaning of my screen.
Here is the code to check your revision and to see from which day you are running your S3 *#12580*369#
Further more, AndreiLux found i string in the ELLA kernels released by Samsung that looks like that it solves the sudden death issue.
So, if indeed if fixes this issue, then off course the latest kernels releases from Sammy has also the fix and not just the custom kernels.
As far as i know, all the custom kernels has the fixes integrated this string by now, but i myself like the stock kernels, Indie puts in the Omega Roms.
Phil3759 has also made a repack of recovery based on CWM touch 6.0.2.7 to get it all safe.
More to come in the future, because i am learning everyday here on XDA and like to share and help others.
Edit, here is quote from AndreiLux about the new bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37163086&postcount=1298
Do I need any particular Bootloader? No - There is no evidence to suggest this fixes anything
Apparently that's wrong, download mode on the device uses a microkernel from inside the bootloader instead of the full blown Linux kernel. When flashing something via Odin in download mode you'd be using the bootloader's MMC driver and thus be at risk.
All-day users are still safe via recovery and live kernel, but are not advised to flash things in download mode with an older bootloader. This also explains why they updated the bootloader in LLA. The security checks are a mere update to bring it up with what the 9305 and Note 2 users already have in terms of not able to get rid of the exclamation mark.
Personal note:
Maybe i am seeing this wrong, to much thinking in terms of home computers, but here is some thoughts regarding above.
From cold, turned off device,.
Turning the device on, micro kernel inside the bootloader kicks in to send information how to start the device correctly.
If it works this way and you are on the old bootloader, then every time you start the device with the old bootloader, you are at risk?

Here i will post stuff that comes along the road like question about batterystats at recovery.
We used to have a option to wipe the battery stats at recovery, also there are some tools at Play store that claims to give a better battery life by just wiping those stats.
But after reading this excellent article, it comes clear that wiping those stats are bull.
So i am glad that option isn't available anymore and perhaps in time, the questions about those stats will faint away in oblivion
And another one i like to share.
Fast Dormancy.
Here is a great article about it, made by Erica.
For me, my provider is saying it's not supporting FD, but when use the method to check, it is supported.
So i tested it for a few days on and off and found that when it's off, i do get some better battery life, but it's just minor.
Instead of losing 5% battery at 8 hours standby, i lost 6%.
Also, i didn't see any benefits in speeds, so i turn it off every time after a flash of a new rom using gokhanmoral tool.
Another thing i like to add.
Wifi.
I have seen many posts about wifi problems.
Here what always works for me.
Sometimes just a reboot of the router will help.
Also, i find changing from dynamic (default) to static that my connection is faster connecting to my router (always use the never setting at wifi advanced to save battery).
Here is how to do it the easy way.
First set it up using it with the default dynamic settings, this way all will be filled in for you.
To change it to static.
Long press your connection and choose modify network config and check show advanced options.
Scroll down a bit and tap on IP settings and choose Static.
And that is all, now you have changed it to static and there is no more need for ip adress to negotiation any more.
https://www.google.nl/search?q=wifi...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
Also if still having problems, adding some more permissions can solve it.
I use root explorer for this
ETC > Long press wifi folder and choose permissions (remember to change Mount R/W to Mount R/O) and check all nine boxes.
Hit back and go to Data > Misc and again long press wifi folder and again, check all nine boxes.
Space
I know, i am a control freak and i hate it when i see space just vanish.
So did some search and found a thumbnail map with more then 1gb size.
Looked at some submaps and i only saw some old stuff.
So, selected all the submaps and just deleted it without problems and gain more then a gb free space.
Here is where you can find it using root explorer:
storage > sdcard0 > .thumbnails.
Edit:
As bigmo7 pointed out, the thumbnails will be rebuild, but off course not off stuff that isn't present on the S3 anymore.
So, if you are someone that is just making pictures or making / creating movies and never delete then from your S3, there is no point off deleting the thumbnails.
But if you like me, moving, creating copying and deleting this kind off stuff, then you can gain space.
Battery life
Always a hot item.
First all, the S3 is a mini computer and computers need juice, just remember this.
Here are some stuff i always do after flashing a new rom.
If the rom comes with a aroma installer which let you select stuff to install or not install, look careful to the list.
Stuff you don't use, can just eat resources and i myself, just find it a waste.
Next, after flashing and setting up the new rom, you will be presented with the option to use wifi.
I always go to advanced when making a wifi connection to choose Never when phone is in standby.
For me, but this can be different for you, wifi is a bit off a drainer so do some testing, let it run overnight with Always selected and another night with Never and see the difference.
Next you will be present if you want to restore and let google backup your phone.
I always deselect backup my phone, first reason, i am a control freak and i decide when and what i want to backup.
And second it can give you wakelocks and this will cost you battery life.
Next step i do is going into settings and to sounds, i don't like the clicking sounds and i deselect all the system sounds.
Next, location services and deselect GPS and Location and Google search.
I want GPS active only when i need it, some apps like Facebook will activate GPS when running and i don't like this.
And i don't want Google to know where i am all the time.
Some weather apps needs Location and Google search to determine your location, but i use Weather pro and it don't need it.
Next step is going into accounts and look what you have selected for syncing.
I always deselect Google photos, Internet and Picasa web albums.
Stuff i don't need .
Location settings at accounts is also off.
Next step is using the Fast Dormancy toggle to disable Fast Dormancy, although my provider is supporting it, enabled costs me a little more juice. Although it's minor, but a lot off minors things makes it bigger .
Then starting Playstore and at settings, deselect Notifications.
And finally freeze stuff i don't use with Titanium Backup pro.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31576747&postcount=105
All this, is giving me a great battery life, with screen on time between 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours, depends what i am doing.
And with the latest JB roms, 1 to 2% battery los in 7 hours standby.
No need for me to toggle Airplane mode, mobiledata or some other powersaving setting or app.
I am also always running the stock insecure kernel that comes with the rom, for me no need for a custom one.

Hello, when we flash a rom that already has mods ... do you know a way to save them ? (where to find them)
I mean. For example, my rom has a mod (and theme) on the toggles (pandoriam i9305). How can I save that mod ? Do you know a good tutorial to learn (safe) modding ?

I never save mods because most of the time when flashing a new rom, it's based on a new build and not every time mods are compatible, just like some themes by the way.
I just safe the mod files and thems, when i am sure they are compatible, i just flash them again.
Indie's Omega roms has already a lot of mods in it by default by the way, but i don't think he was for a 9305.
Good work Kees! Now I'm learning from you.

big big thanks my friend for pointing out all this so nicely
Very nice posts KeesStolk. Maybe you should write a manual for us?
I'm about to post this in Q&A (searching for an answer brought me here )
I just (3 days ago) upgraded my Omega ROM to v40. All seemed fine - I did as normal but in v35, my last Omega there wasn't a Full Wipe option. I chose not to wipe and everything went as per usual with Omega. I reinstalled my extras (6 x 5 icons, Loud phone hack, Increasing ring phone, Note2 Keybd) and was back to normal.
Except, now my apps will not update.
I found out the hard way. I had a problem with Play Store - open it and it would flash briefly then close. Tried all I knew of but nothing worked so, logic said, Omega v40 is different enough I need a wipe and that why they put it in there as a choice this time. (I checked the Omega thread and couldn't see anything relevant but I was in the pub at the time and may not have been as thorough as I should have been)
I had a TB backup and Nandroid on my ExtSD from 2 days back and an EFS so I ran the install again and chose Full Wipe - again everything went well... until I tried to download TB so I could restore all my apps and data. Play Store opened and stayed Open (yaaaay!) and TB acts like it is downloading but nothing comes through - it just sits until it times out on an error.
I tried several apps and none would DL but then AuWeather DL'd just fine. I went back to TB - no go.
After much frustration I Restored my Nandroid and got back to where I was (Omega v35) but still I can't DL and update for TB. At least Play Store stays open though. I tried running the v40 update again, installing the Default, just in case, (& I have just finished DL'ing v41) but the DL/Update problem persists.
I'm now on:
AP – I9300XXEMA2
CP – I9300BUELK1
CSC – I9300LBEMA1
RF cal – 2012.6.28
HW Rev – MP 1.100
Any ideas? If I can't DL TB once I have flashed, I can't get my data back so a wipe isn't really an option until I fix the DL issues.
As I said, this will also be in Q&A but you seem to have a good grasp on the basics so I thought maybe...? :fingers-crossed:
So... I tried restoring back to v35 and got the same problem. And yet that version has been running since v35 came out, at least a couple of months. So I did it again but this time used the Android Revolution Wipe zip, then a straight install of v35. I could then load TB from Play Store and restore my apps and data. Phone seems back to normal now although I have lost some logs data from the couple of days between my backup and now - no biggie... I also now can update my apps.
So it seems it is something to do with Omega v40.
I've just DL'd v41 so will give that a try. Any help with what might have gone wrong would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your kind words, just sharing what i know and hoping this info can help others.
And how is it with v41?
Did you tried it with wifi and 3g, any difference?
Also tried removing your google account, reboot and setting it up again?
Hi kees !
Nice idea you've got with this thread but ... I hope it won't turn into another omega q&a thread . I would like to direct people here but it will be quite difficult if they will see Omega issues all over. Please point them out to the correct thread as you already posted the link to it. Just a thought , correct me if I'm wrong
Thanx !

Thanks and you are right, but the main purpose for me, is just help others with the noobish knowledge i have and let people and myself learn and share.
I don't mind which rom people are running, that's everyone his or here's choice and i totally respect that.
I think this thread deserves to be in General, since you're not asking anything. Hit "report" and see what a mod thinks about it

absolutely !!!
everyone`s choice ! but people must follow proper threads , i`ve got nothing against a certain rom but against disarray when users post or open endless threads about same thing .
some users hates me for this , i know it well , in my thread i always pointed out but somehow is unfair to maintain same topic on more threads .
that`s a bad habit for new users and not only for the rule`s sake but this is the way should be in a human community .

i was thinking as well to open a thread as yours but due to lack of time i didn`t. as soon as i`ll find interesting things i`ll let you know .
i myself am a NOOB !
