yes..mine is system apk..and the apollo player is just ordinary apk..
you can install it, but later you'll have 2 media player..

I did that, then it didn't wanted to boot and i had to reflash

one suggestion though, before rolling out other colors, try and theme more .apk's into this specific color. that will yield a much deeper and a fuller experience as a whole. Then roll out other colors. that will be much easier because you will juts have to tone the colors of the apps and edit a few xmls.
