Why S3 is like cheap toy? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I've been my S3 from 3 weeks. In the last week my phone was dropped to the floor from 1 meters!
SIII is **** not phone because digitizer is smashed now and I must pay for repair! (30% of value phone). What I should do now? Sell this phone? Or hide and don't use?!

My latest phone (SII and SI) was dropped few times and they was working without problem.

Same with my Note 2. Digitizer is intact but screen is cracked, one clean crack from top to bottom. Fell from less than 1/2 meter. Crap materials.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2

My fell more than a meter and they are working fine...
And I would sell it to a private store for a redicoulos price.

you just need to be more careful.. i dropped my phone from 1.5m nothing happened. BECAUSE HAD A CASE AND SCREEN PROTECTOR

I have screen protector too but I don't have CASE!

Even best quality case, cost much less than repair. Lesson learned? Don't safe money on casing....

I've dropped mine from the back of neck level and only a few scratches on the side where the plastic is. Screen has been fine since day one. No case and no screeen protector. I've dropped my phone 7 times now. Btw. I'm about 6 foot.

Do you think that a case can protect the screen from cracking? Especially, the phone fell to the floor display.

I have some lines when viewing pictures and a weird sound when watching online videos like youtube. Any help please?

That all depends upon one the case and two the angle of the fall .
Mine certainly has prevented damage .

My flip case certainly does, only type of case for me

In friday I gave my phone to the service and now I'm waiting for answer. Maybe they repair without payment

Agree on this. I never use my phone (s) without case and screen protector. I don't care if it has gorilla glass or not. Another advantage of this is that my phone looks like new even after couple of months.

So if I have S3 I need wear case and screen protector:
Maybe if I have car I need case TOO!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS4NbNMbaqU
this is funny but iPhone5>S3!!!
S3 is a SH!T not phone!
I understand more that LCD will cost simple 50$ not 166 (530PLN!). Simple in Poland we earn 2000pln on month!

Listen mate....I'm going to put you straight on one point here, so you just accept a few facts.
YOU dropped your phone, not Samsung, not anyone here, accept it and deal with it and take responsibility for your actions......and YES, you do need a case for your car if you are a rubbish driver and keep crashing......see the similarity?

This is what it is made of materials that cell, S1 and S2, so many times I fell down (on the asphalt, the tiles) and it worked, and S3, and the time it collapsed!

Be more careful with your phone and if you think Samsung is s**t then buy something else!

Ok,, let me try again......
Every now and then I drop a mug....sometimes they break, sometimes they don't......when they don't I breath a sigh of relief.....when they do break, I kick myself for being so clumsy....I don't start ranting at the manufacturer or posting on forums, because I don't want to look like a complete idiot who refuses to take responsibility for his own actions or carelessness.....do you get it yet?

Mine fell from the second floor (about 10 meters high) and nothing happened. Got to say im lucky and i love my case
Oh and once i was getting out of the car and i forgor i put my phone on my lap and it fell onto the street and u know how asphalt is rough and yet my phone survived without a scratch.
Conclusion: buy a good quality case.
Hell my case doesnt even cover the screen and is just on sides. Guess im luckier than others.

I don't believe in cases, I've had three smartphones and all three are working to date without cases. My first smartphone was the HTC Wildfire and when i first got it i also bought a $10 Hard case for it, one day my friend accidentally kicked the phone out of my hand and on the floor, the case shattered but the phone was intact. Since then I dont use any kind of case on my phones. On the S3 i use an screenprotector and an clear skin protector for the back(because it scratches easily), I have dropped it several times from a height of 1m-1,5m and the phone doesent even have a scratch on it. Either my phone is stronger than yours in some way or I'm just lucky

How much abuse can/ has your vibrant taken?

I ask because today I dropped it off my bike riding down a hill then ran it over both tires on the screen and not a single scratch no screen protector. These are tough little phones

Barely any. Not a scratch or ding to be seen thanks to the screen protector and $3 case.

I've had mine since the week before the official release. I'd had a Behold II under contract and thankfully fussed at the right T-Mobile corporate people at the right time, and they basically gave me the Vibrant to shut me up.
Anywho, this thing has bounced off of countless things as well as survived a bathtub dump and an accidental washing with the laundry (disassembly required for proper drying out afterwards on both occasions). Has two tiny nicks on the chrome trim and one tiny scuff on one of the backplates.
Still runs like a champ! Best phone I've ever had.
I agree. My dad got this off a friend for 100$ flat and neither him nor I regret it. After all its been through it only has some minor nicks on the crome sides and a small scratch on the backplate. Best phone ive ever had

Hope it can last just one year longer. Then I'll be getting myself an iPhone 5.
My device as stood up against a couple of small drops. There are 1 or 2 dings in the chrome bezel, but, other than that... it's still flawless, and I've had this thing since a day or two after US release. I stopped using the rubber case, since I'm usually pretty careful (except the 2 dings)... and what's the point of buying a super sleek, ultra thin phone, just to bulk it up with giant case. I also don't use screen protectors, and my screen is still flawless. I mean, the Galaxy S series has Gorilla Glass... which is scratch resistant. Besides, screen protectors reduce picture quality, and touch response.

I love my vibrant but the only reason I like it is because of our awesome devs. before I learned how to flash and everything I ****ing hated this thing. the nexus phones are the only ones that work great out of the box and even then I think it needs tweaking before everything is great. I'm going with the iPhone next because I want something easy out of the box that doesn't require much work.
the way I see it is
Rooted, flashed and tweaked android phone >>>>>>>>>>>> iphone
out of the box
iphone >android
only by a little though
I like android more too, but with every device there are tradeoffs. I'm willing to be in apple's walled garden for now haha
I got my Vibrant right around when it launched. Put a Zagg shield on it and that Samsung carbon fiber looking case the same day. Actually replaced the battery on it two months ago and i finally took the case off to clean it. Not a scratch and still looks new. I didnt even pamper the phone. I just think the hardware was solid and im sure a good case helped keep the plastic looking shiny. Hope my new GNex looks as good in another year.
I dropped mine in molten lava, let it sit for a day in a bag of rice, and its good as new.
Vibrant is a freaking defy on crack. I've stepped on it, last Christmas I dropped it slipped from my pocket onto a pile of rocks I was on top of my garage, its tooken a million and one drops. It bounced off my stairs once and my little nephews flung it across the room. Amazing phone. :')

Gorilla glass not so tough...

Sorry need to vent and before anyone asks, I have ordered some accessories already, no ones got anything locally. So here goes my story.... By accident I dropped my phone on a mat and it bounced lightly and hit the gym floor, I was sitting down so my phone was only about 12" from the mat. Anyways long story short I have a nice 4mm scratch on my screen...
I have had a few phones with gorilla glass thats been dropped harder and no scratches.. Like my infuse that got its housing dented and landed face down. (wasn't my fault, friend dropped it) Im so pissed right now, this thing is only 2 days old.

You could have dropped it on some miniscule piece of sharp metal or something... who knows.
That first scratch is always the worst ;(
Man, sorry to hear about your GNote. I would be distraught. Everyone be careful with your new phones! AND get your screen protectors on.
First cut is the deepest
Could it be possible that the scratch happened from another incident where you wouldn't expect damage at all and you never really noticed till you dropped it then closely examined it? For example.. Sliding it into your jeans pocket while the face of the phone scrapes along the copper stud at the top of the fob/ticket/watch pocket (the small one)...
That has totally happened to me a long time ago with my blackberry, was PISSED that I had a long ass scratch on my screen and was puzzled as to how it came to be. Until I slide it in my pocket only to notice it happen again and realized lol
But, again, that was just an example of a seemingly harmless but destructful act.
I was going to say you must have a nice gym where the floor is made of diamonds...
Sorry about the scratch, tho. Your scratch looks just like mine - which I can't actually see if the display is on. Hopefully yours isn't too bad.
I don't see how because you happened to scratch your screen it equates to the device not having gorilla glass at all. Its not indestructible ya' know.

To be fair, though, your post title looks like you're trolling. I'd suggest changing it if you can...nothing wrong with venting, but spreading misinformation is kind of uncool even though you're frustrated (and I can definitely relate to that). Maybe "Gorilla Glass isn't as tough as I thought..." and then show an HD video of the vball game shot with your Note just because you can.
Changed, thanks.

My Captivate is 1 1/2 years old. I've never had a screen protector near it. I've dropped the thing a dozen times, it even slid 15 feet on it's face on an asphalt covered hill. I stuck it in and out of my pocket over 1,000 times and it doesn't have one scratch on the glass.
I was really hoping we would get the same protection on the Note.
Guess I am going to re-think the whole screen protector thing. Bummer!

if you go to ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/2 you can see it mentions the fact that the screen is a fused unit, will be very hard to get an "unofficial" one.

Pictures posted. can you view them? just got that photobucket account as I am away from home right now.
I have dropped my old SGS2 and SGS from higher than this and I got a light scratch... this has made me loose ALL faith in the build quality.
How come the front and back got damaged at the same time /?????????????????????
Yeah been looking into getting it fixed. Around 3-400$ for the screen then plus the camera housing... may as well buy new phone. Hence the appeal for bricked devices on here...
Saying that, I dropped mine also getting out of the car... It didn't even scratch, just dented the plastic on the side of the screen.
The worrying thing is, the screen is exactly flush with the bezel and so is not protected at all when it falls - you might have been unlucky on how it landed!

Maan... today it happened to me. Dropped out of my pocket when I got out of a cab. The screen is ok, just some tiny scratches at the top right (I can live with that), but the bezel looks like crap at the bottom left, that's probably where it hit the ground after the fall, then falling onto the screen where it got the scratches.
Does anyone know whether the bezel can be repaired or replaced? I guess I was lucky, but still... now I have a shiny new phone that's just a few days old... and it looks like... an idiot dropped it.
Just my Own story
I didn't have my SGS3 for 24 hours yet, and I have broken the screen. I use my phone as a alarm clock, the alarm rang in the morning after getting the phone waking me up, I hit the snooze button and went to put the phone back onto the bedside table, about 3-4 feet off the ground, I guess I slightly miss positioned in in my not so awake state, it fell to the ground, I hadn't thought too much about it as I had way worse falls with my SGS2 and never anything, but wen I picked my phone back up I could not believe that there was a big crack across the screen... I thought Gorilla glass 2 would of been much stronger. I'm very disappointed with the durability, I can live with it but every time I look at the unit it just reminds me of how easily that was broken, and it disappoints me all over again, I don't see a big reason to spend the ridiculous amount of money to replace the screen for the one crack across the screen, BUT it sure is a sore thumb.
Overall I'm extremely happy with my Samsung Galaxy SIII but VERY disappointed with the durability. I guess it is also my fault, I was so EXTREMELY satisfied and happy with my SGS2 that wen they released the S3 I just jumped on the occasion to get it and never waited for any reviews and customer testimonials as I would normally do wen considering buying anything, especially something at this price range. I will however learn from my mistake.

Dropped my Note, squaretrade warranty tale

Thought this might be interesting for some to see how a Square trade accident coverage situation goes. I will update the thread as new events occur. If this isn't kosher to some, please delete. I searched the forums hoping to find a similar thread but found nothing.
I accidentally dropped my phone in my basement Sunday the 19th and filled out a claim form online on the 20th at approximately 12:30 pm central time. I was asked if I preferred to be mailed a refurbished phone of same or similar specs but since I use my phone for work I chose repair mainly in hopes that they can fix it and I won't have to go through hassles of installing a tibu backup. If for some reason they opt not to repair it figure it'd be nice to start fresh with a new Note. I entered my credit card information to be charged the $99 deductible to begin the process.
After filing the claim you are given information that they will contact you within 1-2 business days from submitting. Currently I have not been contacted after 1.5 business days have gone by (full day today, half the day before). They state to call them if I am not contacted in this time but after 15 minutes of being on hold I figure I can waste time doing that tomorrow when a full 2 days are up. The current status online is that an agent is being assigned to my case.
About the phone: It fell about two feet from my couch to the basement cement floor and cracked the lcd diagonally across. There is a chip in the top right corner of the ceramic and dents in the metal around it. It was housed in an elago case which I now regret as it protected nothing. Phone is still functional and has been backed up for when I am able to send it in.
Well that was quick. Moments after posting I received an email with the prepaid next day air UPS label to send it to their depot in LA. What I am hoping is that if they choose to repair the lcd that the chipped corner will be addressed as well as it snags my shirt. Fingers crossed.
Definitely interested to see how this works out for you. Wish you nothing but the best. Good luck.
Ya i would love updates on this too. I have so many warrantees through them but have never had to use it yet.
I always read about how people bust their phone so easily and it baffles me that I've never broken a screen yet. I had my iPhone 4 in my lap sitting in a van and got out forgetting it was their and it fell off my lap face down onto concrete and no scratches to the screen. I had my Note in my hand and accidentally hit my hand on a car door when I was getting out and it bounced onto the concrete below, face down. Got a couple chips on the bezel but that's about it. But yours busted falling two feet off the couch. So weird....

What was weird was I expected it not to be broken. It's definitely not the first time it's slipped out of my hands, but it's been a trooper and kept in tact until the short drop.
Anywho...
Got bored and google searched the place they are having me mail it to. It's these guys: http://www.cfrepaircenter.com
Some spotty reviews online, so fingers crossed. Wouldn't be too happy to spend $100 + original cost of the warranty to get a shoddy repair. I'm going to add a note about the broken ceramic and jacked up metal portion in hopes that it is addressed. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show a before and after.
It depends a lot on how the phone falls. The corners of an LCD screen tend to be weak spots, so it can often crack if it lands on a corner which sounds like was the case here.
With this phone the LCD, front glass, and bezel (the silver band) are one unit. So a cracked glass = entire front replaced. The part costs about $200.

There are a lot of little hairline cracks in the LCD as well that don't show too well. Using a Captivate right now and even with CM10 Jelly Bean, I know I'm going to be missing the Note immediately. Off it goes in the morning!

I haven't bothered doing more than rooting and unlocking it for travel. I need my phone 24/7 for work, and stock hasn't bothered me one bit (ICS or GB) on this. The phone is encrypted, if security was the question.
The finale!
Well, I got my phone back today. Looks terrific. I'll post pics later if needed, but if you know what a new Note looks like, that's what it looks like. Even arrived with the annoying little stickers that came on the bezel. Looks like they even replaced the plastic battery cover.
One minor thing is the phone was returned reset to factory due to my refusal to give up the encryption password. It's not a big deal as I ran a backup, just thought I'd mention it. I understand they needed to do QC before calling it fixed.
Have a new Otterbox Commuter case on the way tomorrow!
Decent service, fast turnaround, and pretty impressed all around. A tad bit expensive at $100 deductible but considering the cost without accident insurance and having to install the LCD myself, this was well worth it.
Thanks for sharing!

GS3 durability - is it actually that bad?

Hi there, new Galaxy S3 owner here.
I've done extensive research about the phone and durability was what scared me the most. Nevertheless, the power, screen, and other features over my aging Galaxy S, proved too good to pass up, so I went ahead and bought it in the end.
The galaxy s3 is reasonably well built in my opinion, however, the metallic rim does not protrude out of the bezel (the galaxy S1 and S2 both have a slightly protruding rim), and therefore, provides very little protection in the event of a face down drop as the glass strikes a surface first, and not the rim. The videos on YouTube also confirm my theory as the GS2 suffered no damage in a face down drop, while the GS3 got wrecked. Corner drops also seemed very lethal to the GS3.
With all these fears in mind I have got myself a flip case that covers the corners and the screen, but is that really necessary and will that help during a drop?

So what are your experiences regarding to the durability of the S3? Will a case save you in that inevitable accident? Did your screen shatter when you dropped your phone?
Thanks in advance.

Dropped my phone today pretty hard, I use the white gs3 with no case/protector
I crapped my pants however it was totally undamaged when I picked it up.
Going to get a case now, don't want to push my luck! Where did you get yours from?

Dropped my "naked" phone twice once on a linoleum floor from about 3 feet, the phone landed on the upper left corner, no damage of any kind and on hardwood floor from about 4-5 feet and again no damage, this time the phone landed flat on its back. My conclusion is that S3 should survive all "indoor" drops just fine, dropping it on the sidewalk or in a driveway will probably damage it that said I'm willing to risk it as I can't stand putting a case on the S3 as in my opinion doing so completely ruins the look of the phone.
So much for Balls of steel

If you've owned a GS1 like I did, (or even GS2), you'll feel how I had balls of steel with that phone as it's literally unbreakable. In a WWII tank analogy the GS1 feels like a German tiger while the GS3 feels like an M4 Sherman
Still its nice to know that one drop wouldn't kill the S3 for all users

Dropped mine once, not too high though. Luckly nothing happened and it is still intact!
Sorry to bring this thread up again, but today the inevitable drop happened! Dropped it out of an unzipped pocket of my jacket at a height slightly above my waist probably from a height of about 1 meter or so.
The phone landed flat on the screen with a noticeable thud, on a concrete pavement with loads of gravel on top of it. It didn't even bounce once so that's a heck lot of pressure. Thankfully, my flip case was closed (as seen in my first post), and the padding for the screen probably saved my GS3's arse big time. I guess that case is a very good investment after all practical while still aesthetically pleasing Any other experiences for drops or other accidents?
dropped my phone screen face down twice now, at home( height is slightly lesser than 1m i guess, table-height - i tend to sweep the phone off the table for some reason ) so far no noticeable damage
