I have recently installed Mantano ereader and I have to say , it looks gorgeous on the display especially with the horizontal scrolling in landscape. I believe no other ereading app is equipped with as many features
I love it as well, but it has issues crashing on PDF files. Certain ones don't render at all and others crash upon highlighting and annotating. Buggy Beta at best for me.

Mantano is the most visually appeasing presentation but like post #2 states, it crashes PDFs if you try to highlight, touch the screen the wrong way, etc. It's very annoy. it also doesn't search the entire document. I want something with the stability of Repligo and speed of Mantano. The presentation would be icing on the cake.
It surprises me that other than Mantano, every other PDF reader (tried EZpdf, Repligo, Moonreader) renders with some sort of lag with such high end tablet. I wonder if there is a way to use both cores or increase CPU usage to speed up rendering speed.

I think its something with how devices render PDFs in general. GoodReader on the iPad is one of the highest rated editors and it lagged bad when I used it, no different then the Nexus

For those of you with the device, at 299 now I think it's a great deal as I can't justify the 500-600 on a xoom, etc. With a custom rom on this baby, is it pretty smooth? What about internet surfing, is it smooth? Just wondering because my friend has a nook for example with CM7, and browsing the web isn't the greatest...but doable I guess.
Is this tablet pretty stable and relatively fast when clicking, launching, playing games, etc? I'm just trying to justify its purchase or waiting for like the HTC Flyer. Of course I'm sure that will be in the 500$ range as well...
As far as basic functionality (web browsing, gaming, etc) the tablet is great. You have a lot of choice regarding customization and hacking, the gTablet is probably one of the better tablets for experimentation and tinkering.
The biggest negatives is the screen, if you already have an iPad or IPS screen-type tablet the screen will probably be difficult to get over. If you can ignore the screen then you will have a difficult time finding a more capable tablet for $285.
Wait for an ASUS....$400 with IPS and Honeycomb
hows the view angle though on the viewsonic? Could lets say my wife and I watch a movie if held in the center of both of us?

Yes, but neither of you will have a great picture.
My wife can "shoulder surf" when laying next to me, but some things she can't make out (pictures, etc).
Thanks.
Also it has mini HDMI out or whatever right? Can you output it to your television and watch a movie (mkv for example) from this device to your TV?
Does the web browser have decent pinch to zoom, as in, it's smooth and not choppy?

People are reporting that MKV runs choppily. I haven't tested MKV, but XviD works great, if you can bear the quality.
As for the cable, this thing uses a weird connection that is hard to find. Most vendors (read, in China) are selling a cable for $40, and a dock for around $50. If you're looking to connect this to a TV, look forward to tacking on an extra $50 for its asking price.

I am using Dolphin Browser HD, and I can comfortably say that it is almost as good as using a desktop browser, in terms of performance (Flash, web browsing, downloading files, etc.)
Agreed with the previous poster. I also use Dolphin HD, running on Vegan, and the browser is great. Pinch zoom is smooth and fast.
I've been lusting for an iPad for a while, but have never been able to justify the expense of a decent sized one (I refuse to get anything < 16GB). I was hoping that once the iPad2 was released that there would be more of the G1 version available (either as refurbs or used on ebay), but haven't found much luck finding one I was willing to pull the trigger on.
I've got an iPhone 3G (jailbroken, of course...) and tons of apps that i've downloaded, so I was familiar with the processes necessary to "root" an iOS device.
I must say that having little to no experience with Android (phones or otherwise) before getting this little beauty, I'm quite impressed. A coworker has the Xoom and aside from a slight size difference and the aforementioned screen visibility issues, my gtab holds it's own against his Xoom. Plus I have $300 more in my pocket then he does at the moment...
I'm running TnT Lite 4.40 on mine right now and it's as fast as I need it to be.
If you do get one, I recommend upgrading the ROM as the stock one is pretty crippled. DolphinHD is gorgeous and I'm a BIG fan on using Aldiko to read ebooks. I had previously been using Stanza on my iPhone and it's a world of a difference on this thing....
For some the screen is a deal breaker. If you've used another tab/reader with a better screen, then it may be for you also. I don't mind it so much as I haven't had much of a need for it be viewable at any extreme angle and it's kinda like a built in privacy filter so that nosy nellie's can't see what I'm doing on it unless i want them to.
The wife and daughter LOVE Angry Birds on it and I usually have to wrestle it away from one of them in order to use it.
With a little bit of elbow grease and willingness to experiment, this is a great tablet for the price...
cnet reviews has a rating system for all of the electronic gadgets it rates, a scale of 1 to 10 on each of the following categories: design, features, and performance. They rated the GT 10.1 as 8, 6, and 8 respectively.
I was wondering how you all would rate the GT 10.1 based on those categories and the same scale.
I gotta say, I disagree with their assessment, especially when the ipad 2 got 9, 8, and 8 respectively. It's funny that they call out all the similarities between the 2 in terms of design with the only difference being the backing (GT 10.1 uses a plastic backing whereas ipad 2 uses aluminum)--& that is worth a whole point difference. I don't know.
I think that review is a little outdated, but I'm curious to see how everyone on here would rate it.
My rating would be a 9 (I don't think a plastic-backing is enough to knock off a point), 7, and 8 at least.
How I would rate the GT 10.1
design: 9 its the thinnest lightest tablet on the market.
features: 7 it isnt where androids phones are as far as apps and development but google has shown us that ti can and will be there.
performance: 9 the tab, even though is not refined yet i would still say it is blazing fast. only time i see lag is when i type in forums online.

Hate to piggy back on your review but that how exactly I feel. Only difference between I pad and this is that this will get better as more devs get involve. Pershoot is doing great job getting it started.
They gave the ipad2 more for performance? They should check the Tegra2 converted Ipad2 games and recalculate. Compare Galaxy on Fire 2, the Tegra2 Version has more Polygons and still more FPS.
And features 8 for Ipad2? Well, they never surf the web and miss some kind of flash, including browser games? That is a huge problem. And how to watch movies on ipads? Movies are 16:9 not 4:3, so you have to strech or to watch thick black borders reducing your effective tablet size down by 3-4 inches.
The only valid argument for an ipad2 are the offered apps - everything else is below 10.1. Oh and the metal backplate.
I'd have to go 9,7,9 too.
9 for design. Love it
6 on features. I only say this because i cant play any music on it that i transfered from my computer. and beleive me i have tried everything to fix it. Google music just closes right after being opened. Or if im lucky enough to have it not auto exit out it wont rexognize my music thats on the phone.
8 for performance. Some times it lags out super hard like a over loaded computer from the 90's. Yes i make sure memery ram is atleast half emtpy and fresh restarts but idk. Lags hard 1/3 of the time.
BUT the web browsing almost makes up for all of this. Id rather brows on my tab then my $1800 custom build desk top. Next to non on web! Hope they update software and fix this stuff. Cause i know the hardware is amazing. Just need to work the kinks out and get some more apps and widgets and ill be in the 10's and 10's all around !
Design: 8
Thin and light, looks really good. Pleasure to hold.
Features: 6
No micro SD on an Android tablet, seriously? Even the optional keyboard dock and media dock don't include SD or USB ports.
Performance: 6
Tegra 2 is weak at video decoding. Android 3.1 is sluggish and unresponsive at times. Lots of room for improvement.
Design: 9 (10 because I have the google i/o edition!)
It's amazingly thin, it has a widescreen (wtf ipad?) and with a nice case it goes along nicely with a backpack.
Features: 7
No sd card slot. Proprietary ports. Missing some key apps like netflix and so on.
Performance: 7
My issues with performance are more of an issue with honeycomb. Slow web browsing, unable to hide the bottom bar completely, sometimes lags/crashes.
My biggest issues are really with honeycomb, it does feel like a beta product. But in comparison the ipad wouldn't fair to well in MY scoring system. The only thing the ipad has is iOS feels more stable and it has more apps. Everything else it performs much worse. From design to features.

Count me in this boat as well. I wouldnt trade it for any other tablet, including the Toshiba. The performance, combined with the build quality & form factor, and the sexiness of this device has me all-in.
Love it. I almost didnt buy it after the whole microSD craze, but even though I'd love to have it, that was wuhayyy overblown. There's so many ways to create extra storage and to interconnect devices easily.
9-7-9
Not bothered about micro sd, if we didn't have that propriety port then 9-9-9.
I can't understand why developers choosing to make more iOS apps counts against the 10.1 in ratings. It shouldn't be held against the tablet if developers prefer to write for the iPad more than the Android.
Design: 9
Very thin and light, however is hard to grab without a cover. (too thin lol)
Features: 8
No micro SD is fine for me, everything else was OK.
Performance: 4
I wouldn't feel happy with the performance at current state, it doesn't feel smooth when switching screen. You can see the widget jiggling from side to side when you pull the screen slowly but it does feel great if you tab the side to flip around. My iPad1 was way more smooth compared with 10.1.
I still couldn't find any reading app in honeycomb that is able to turn a page as smooth as iPad1.
9.5 /9/6
Only a tard would give it an 8 in first category. Unless I'm comparing to the future this thing is amazingly designed. No corners, no typical metallic back ,really thin bezel but not so thin that it interferes with screen use. 16:9 gorgeous hd screen. Great speaker placement and quality.
Only shortcomings of course are lack of built in ports... but with sd usb hdmi all possible via attachment its a plus that you end up with the best of both worlds.
(I'm only talking to aesthetics not value)
No portrait only home button.
Good quality cameras on both sides.
Only actual hardware issue that easy to pick at is tegra 2s awful codec playback.
( Most people blame honeycomb for the lag, google blames tegra2)
Eventually most tablets will be thinner and or lighter. But as of today no tablet has better hw than galaxy tab. Its not even a discussion.
If the tab and the ipad2 were *both* running web os or windows 8 you'd be a fool to pick up an ipad.
Performance of Honeycomb is obviously annoying many. Google's non chalant attitude of blaming hardware and not addressing ux issues is troublesome. The lack of apps bothers most people at some point. Choppy video and laggy browser typing remain unfixed on the tab.
So again say what you want about honeycomb....but the hardware is best in class.
Performance dropped a lot with 3.1 + TouchWiz compared with 3.0.1.
I've also noticed that the quality of font rendering on system components (like the url textbox on the browser) is worse with 3.1 + TouchWiz.
TouchWiz brings a bunch of system changes and I suspect it's responsible for many of the lag/quality issues.
that's why people made adw.launcher and launcherpro.
touchwizz is just a one time shot to fool people that samsung has awesome support.
in reality, 90% of all customers prefer plain android. touchwiz should be an optional app, not a replacement.
better they improve their update politics, would be much more usefull. but instead they delay everything just for tochwizz - and it still fails
I'm assuming you mean 10.1 v ?
Design: I would rate it a 10, maybe 10.1 , considering how fast Samsung reacted to the ipad2.
Features: probably a 6 or 7, no micro sd and only ok-ish cameras.
Performance: 7. For the most part performance is great, but in any view that's not the normal landscape, you can see that the UI and browsers arn't quite as smooth. That's a big negative for me because I like holding it like a book sometimes.
Just a head's up for today's freebie from Amazon app store. I actually like this drawing app better than Sketchbook Mobile which was my go-to portable art app (I'm an artist by trade) because it doesn't have the lag and feels a lot more natural to draw with. Some of the tools are a little sketchy but I use it primarily for the paintbrush tool. The others (pencil, marker) aren't as accurate as Sketchbook Mobile's (lots of wiggliness ensues) but the paintbrush makes up for it.
Much better for kids too than Sketchbook --- more intuitive UI.
Obviously not a Painter or Photoshop substitute but for sketching/doodling on the go it's one of the best android drawing apps out there, IMO.
Hey can you post some cool drawings you've made? I wanna see what's possible withing the nook colors kind of bad digitizer

Will do, have to do some digging for decent (i.e. not completely rough sketches). I mostly use the NC as an art tablet in a pinch --- nothing beats pencil & sketchbook still, especially not a tablet w/ zero pressure sensitivity that has been configured to ignore smaller than fingertip contact.
I do my 2d digital work with a Wacom Intuos tablet + Photoshop / Sketchbook Pro / Paint Tool SAI. My comp can't handle Painter without a lot of lag, so I have to make do with the poor man's Painter (SAI). Doesn't have as many tools, effects, etc as Painter, but is especially good at color / paint blending and fantastic (better than anything else I've used) at line work.
Hello.
I am a CS postgraduate student and I really need a tablet for reading. Currently I have an ipad 2 which really isn't ideal for reading pdf's. I can't load large pdf's and the resolution is terrible.
My main use cases for the tablet will be reading and browsing. No gaming at all.
Nexus 10 finally is available to my country and I can get the 32gb model for 200 euro less than ipad 4 32gb. I I believe it's a good deal.
My main concern is the screen ratio. At the moment I can't find the tablet in local stores to check it out thus I'm little confused.
Everybody says in the reviews that nexus 10 is not supposed to be used in portrait mode etc and that ipad is that much better for reading. The thing is that I want to use it almost only in portrait mode!
Anyone using nexus 10 only for reading? Is it good/comfortable? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

I use mine a lot for pdf reading I find it really good. I use moonreader in landscape mode. The screen is good quality but it also depends on the pdf. If the quality of the pdf is small and low quality it will look rubbish on any tablet.
I use my N10 in portrait mode more than I do landscape.. It's perfect for reading..
I use it for reading, too. Maybe my note 2 reads a little faster than nexus 10 but i can't complain. You won't be disapointed!
If your idea is only reading get a Kindle. I already used PDF and .MOBI files on it, actually I used on Nexus 10 as well (Kindle app), and Kindle screen is the best for writing (it looks like a sticker actually). But with it you won't be able to browse. Anyway, Nexus 10 is a good thing for reading, just not as good as the Kindle, I really enjoy using both actually xD.
I think it's a good go in the end to get the Nexus 10, I was just giving you another idea .
By the way, I have the 4th Generation Kindle:
http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Ereader-ebook-reader/dp/B007HCCNJU
And the 32GB Nexus 10.
I also use the N10 for reading, using the Kindle app. Use it both in landscape and portrait and it's great. I prefer to use the sepia background, find it easier on the eyes.
I use mine mostly for reading as well. I actually sold my kindle paperwhite when I got the n10. I'm always in portrait mode and I use mantano reader (which is a lot smoother then moon reader). Most of my books are PDFs and a kindle sucks with PDFs.
The iPad might have better apps but I never had a apple device and I love the screen of the n10.
Thanks for your replies! I just ordered it!

Yeah you made a good choice. I was holding out on tablets until the Nexus 10 mainly because of the incredibly high display resolution and aspect ratio make it perfect for reading in portrait. Not really reading like casual books and such, but technical papers reference material normally in .PDF files. Normally used my second monitor in portrait mode, but Nexus 10 works really well with a stand. Also great when I want to take a break and get away from my desk, but still skim over things or browse the web.
The screen is good quality but it also depends on the pdf. If the quality of the pdf is small and low quality it will look rubbish on any tablet.
USE EZPDF
I definitely would recommend EZPDF Reader if you're planning on making annotations - its the best by far in that area (I've looked at MANY readers, trust me). Its a paid app, but it's worth it. Besides, if you don't like it, simply return it.
If you just want reading, Mantano Reader is very smooth. Smoother than EZPDF, for sure.
1) Smart Dock works with Note 3
2) Performance is cut up to half naturally because two 1080p screens are being displayed.
Example:
Anomaly 2 benchmark for the high benchmark I would score over 600k normally, with HDMI I would only score above 300k.
Just in case anyone was wondering.

Interesting finding, thanks for that! The question now would be: Do you really FEEL the difference in everyday context? Like browsing the web, writing stuff, switching windows, watching videos (playing games )? Or is only a benchmark ("look what a monster my device is") thing?

If you compare it directly to the non-hdmi experience then yes you will "feel" it. It still is a smooth experience - just not "buttery" smooth. The performance is still acceptable for most things outside of the most demanding apps and games.
Interesting to note that while most things will be mirrored, playing videos using the default video app plays it only through hdmi. A 4K video I took was not mirrored and thus played perfectly over hdmi. Youtube and netflix were mirrored on both screens, and never got to high resolution like it does on my roku/xbox./ps3.

Hmm,...that´s quite sad of course - would be damn nice if the note 3 would be able to replace these devices completely.
