Hi All
I've purchased the Aria for my wife, got it on Ebay today and now i'm trying to install a new ROM for it, without much success, I have 15 different chrome tabs open, and I think I've kinda need help now, here's what I did :
i've been following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159237 mainly, since I saw it's for 2.2.2.
I managed to S-Off successfully, and install CWM, but failed at actually getting CWM to work, after a long troubleshooting, I discovered I still don't have my phone rooted (downloaded titanium backup to verify it).
so I went over and looked at the root guide using unrEVOked Recovery - it does it's things and reboot the phone twice during the process, but then it says "unable to root, firmware is too new ?"
so I figured I might have an odd firmware, tried installing the one from HTC Website, it didn't seem to work either (failed to install) but I didn't troubleshoot it much since I saw that the version HTC has is exactly the same one I was had.
at this point, I ready many guides, but seen no one with the same Root problems I had, so i'm hoping any1 can direct me to the next steps, what am I doing wrong ?
here's some data from the bootloader screen, incase you need it :
Liberty PVT Ship S-Off
HBOOT-6.02.1002
MICROP-031b
Touch Panel-STN21_00
Radio-7.16.35.11
Nov 4 2010
Thanks
The S-OFF portion was successful, so at least you got that far. S-OFF does NOT automatically give you root.
Unrevoked will not work on your device because it only works on older devices that have HBOOT version 0.57.00. That's what the error message there meant. That's fine though, you don't need to use Unrevoked.
If you have HTC Sync installed, uninstall it. Then follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694 (the first 6 steps only)

thanks for the fast response.
did the first 6 steps (cwm installation) using recovery img from CWM 2.517 , went fine, but still can't load any ZIP files using CWM, it says "no zip files found".
basically same as before.
so when you boot it into cwm then go install zip from sd nd comfirm it all, it comes up with "no zip files found"

I don't even get to confirm it before I get this message.
it's like CWM have no access to the SD Card.

oh okay then well...
so you choose the "install zip from sdcard"?
not the "apply sdcard:update zip"
then it comes up with that error

yea, that's right.
alright im not quite sure of the problem but i have let someone know who is a developer of the aria know. attn1 is very well known he will fix your problem very quickly
It sounds to me like Clockworkmod was successfully installed.
Some things to try:
1) Boot up your phone normally and confirm that you are able to read/write from the SD card.
2) Try doing a Nandroid backup. When it does the backup it should write to the SD card. See if you get any errors during this process.
3) Try removing the SD card you have in the phone now and making sure it's seated properly.
4) If that doesn't fix your problem, try reformatting the SD card using this tool (specifically this tool, as it is designed to fix bad SD card formats) - http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/SDFormatterv3.0.zip. To use this tool you need to have an SD card reader on your computer (you can't do it through your phone)
5) If THAT doesn't work, try using a different SD card.
Good luck.

Genius !
formatted the SD card using the tool, but then the Aria said it's damaged, reformatted using the Phone, rebooted to recovery and CWM managed to see files, installed SU successfully.
Thanks alot !
You haven't by chance bought your SD card off eBay have you?I'm asking because there's a ton of b.s. SD cards on the net.I myself got one through bestofferbuy.looked okay unless you tested it or went over 1.7gb

I didn't bought it off ebay, but it was never a physical problem with the SD Card, since I took it off my SGS2 and moved it to my wife phone, I guess I needed to format it before I Tried to use it, what confused me is that I had no issues accessing the card from the PC or from the phoen itself (Astro for example), but the CWM didn't like it at all.
anyway, i'd suggest to read reviews and feedbacks about SD Cards, I got mine from newegg, it's a Patriot Class 10 card, a bit overkill, but cheap considering its high-end card.
for this fix, you will need to have a CWM sdcard ready and waiting followed by and drivers properly installed for your tablet.
YOU MUST have CWM running from sdcard to fix this issue. Otherwise nothing will happen.
instructions to install to sdcard are here (I suggest using windows)
Needed files for download:
just download this zip and run the script while booted into cwm from sdcard.
download it here.
Instructions: Boot from sd (don't worry, it will work), ensure sdcard is mounted, and then you just run the fix.bat from the computer after extracting.

Fattire for the idea that it might have formatted mmcblk0p1 (which it dead instead of mmc1)
You're welcome.
Might want to add that the cause of the "brick" appears to be that CM7 is confusing mmc1 and mmc0 and instead of wiping the first partition of the SD card, it's presumably wiping the first partition of the emmc, which contains the x-loader.
I already have said it.
Ah okay... well glad everything is fixed now.

Bowing head in shame here...... Rookie mistake!
Looks like we have to make a bit of a tweak to the system then do some testing.

Hi Indirect. I see that you have fixed your NT. I did not use sd i did install cm7 internally but i did format all the mounts . And now it just restarts in CWM. What should i do. Any idea please
Well guys, I'm still having problems. I ran the brick fix before you updated it - didn't work. I then re-ran after you updated it - still didn't work. It'll boot to CWM from SD, but won't boot to any ROM. Tried re-installing CM7 (didn't work), then I tried the Nook141root.zip which supposedly installs the BN 1.4.1 from CWM (also didn't work). Tried re-running the brick fix a handful of times after and before installing each ROM with no luck. Then I tried running it without installing a ROM. Tried the brick fix then I tried the BN 1.4.0 restore file. I tried on multiple freshly formatted SD cards and I even tried on a computer I was working on with a fresh install of Win7 with a fresh install of the drivers just to rule that out.
Before all this I had CWM and CM7 installed internally - if that makes a difference. Ideas?
Edit: More info. When trying to wipe data/factory reset in CWM I get the errror "E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2"...this occurs right after rebooting from the brick fix.
Edit 2: More info yet...in the brick fix I'm getting the text "error: device not found" twice right after entering "y" then again a handful of times later. Is there anything special I have to do in CWM to get it to detect it? I have sdcard mounted...
Im geting this and then my nt restarts by itself and then im back in cwm again so nothing is fixed.

Actually with mine it does not matter . I get till the step y or n without mounting nothing. Than i mount the sd card and press y and enter.
Than as u can see does try to write something and than my nook does reboot .
And the ending is the same. So no progress so far.

Were you running from internal or SD when it bricked?
Does it boot to CWM on it's own without an sd in the slot? If it does have you tried restoring/flashing a backup?
Reason I say about the backup is I just bricked my own systems on purpose when running from sdcard, it kept gpoing back to CWM after the xloader was returned to it. Restored an original backup and all is well again

Yes i have had it internally. Not in an sd.
Yes mine doew boot to CWM on its own without and sd in slot. And yes i have tried restoring to re flash back up. Cause i have installed CM7 once and it did run well. But than after installing some programs became slow so i wanted to redo it again. And than i did format all: bootdata, cache, emmc, rom, system,sd-ext.
And then i installet cm7 again and all the installing went well againg . But it just want start cause is missing something in one of the mounts. So what i think is only needed if ill be able to restore the data that is in all those small partitions like emmc. I know that bootdata, and cached gets backed up but i dont know if the orthers are backed up or not.
Thanks for trying to help.
Edit: I have to go to university now. But if it would make it easier for you to help, I can shot a video afterwards with all the steps what i have done and how is my nook behaving now.Just let me know .
Edit1: I did try to restore to stock or update to 1.4.1 but it tells me MD5 mismatch.
Is it possible that i can push in with adb the files that are in the boot data, eMMc and other mounts i mean one by one.
I was running internal when it bricked. Only boots to cwm from SD now.

I'm in the same boat...I think when we did a format of the rom partition, we lost some data that was not backed up...That being said I have done a lot of reading and I think all hope is not lost.
We did not format the "factory" partition which from what I have been reading may contain a backup of the "rom" and other partitions.
I wonder if it is possible to pull the data from the factory partition, extract the data that we need and then push the appropriate files back to where they belong? It's way beyond my expertise, although I do have ADB working and I think if someone could point us in the right direction, it wouldn't be that difficult...I could be completely off base though...Good Luck and If I make any progress I'll make sure I pass the info along.

I got the bloody ADB issue.... I was able to boot to CWM from SD card, and it's mounted. BUT! Adb devices gives me nothing, no device. I did all the troubleshooting of the driver, i got the "Android composite ADB interface" device but still no adb device appearing. Please help! My only idea if this fix can be incorporated into a flashable zip. May be there is some other way?
Thanks.

I tried repartitioning my nook and it really bricked it now. It won't boot from SD. Tried a different card and fresh download of CWM. I think it's totally borked.
Edit for clarification: repartitioned from within CWM on SD
Edit2: Tried a 3rd card (first 2 were 32gb, 3rd was 16gb) and it let me back into CWM. ADB still isn't working though.
Edit2 clarification: I only say ADB isn't working because the brick fix says device not found. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.

Mne does not say that but it restarts my nook. But it does not fix it. I think its just some small starting files missing. But im not so good so i cant help it. So im just sitting and watching around internet if there is any fix. It looks that they have had the same problem with NC to start with to.
i rooted my NT about a year ago when i got it (i don't recall the specific method used), and have been clunking along with it for months, but now i want to install CM 7, 9, or 10.
most of the guides start with "Stock 1.4.3" but my software version says "9.9.9" after root (iirc, it was 1.4.1 when i received it).
can i use these guides with the rooted 9.9.9 version i have?
or are there special instructions for 9.9.9 (maybe an abbreviated version since i am already rooted?)
or do i somehow have to go from 9.9.9 back to 1.4.1 or 1.4.3?
thanks for any assistance, and if you need more information from me, i'll see if i can provide it.
That 9.9.9 just means that you've blocked ota update and it doesn't matter at all.

Yes, the installation will over-write whatever is currently in emmc (and that's why it's recommended that you back up the current config).
FWIW, your buddy can keep his stock ROM and try running CM10 off an SD card (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35946501#post35946501), and decide later whether to replace his stock ROM with it.
I have complete stock 1.4.3 and have been running off of a CM7 sd card since the beginning of summer. I'm ready to upgrade to the emmc version of CM10, but do I need to root the BN ROM first? I want to install this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773362 I would "burn" the recovery.img to my sd card and install the .zip onto the emmc, right? This is my first time flashing an internal ROM and want to be sure.

No, you need to first create a “bootable” clockworkmod (CWM) recovery SD, then rename the referenced recovery-0.08.3.img to recovery.img and copy it as well as referenced cm10-acclaim-0.08.3-full-of-bugs.zip and the file gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip from http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip to the card. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1 for an overview of the process for installing CM10 ROM on the NT internal emmc.

Thanks for the help! I'm a little confused though, do I use the SD card or the emmc version of CWM to make the bootable SD? Does the emmc version flash CWM to the nook and from there do I install the files from a SD, or does it boot from the SD and allow me to flash ROMs to the emmc?
Also, if I'm using the CWM .img what's the purpose of the recovery.img on the card if all I'm flashing are the .zips? I would imagine the ROM .zip instructs it to flash the recovery.img but the CM10 thread says you can use an older CM9 recovery.img.
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks again!

The recovery version you need to put on the SDcard is the sdcard version (not the emmc version); recovery is the tool that manages the flashing of the ROM/gapps zip files onto the NT, clearing of cache, backing up current ROM & apps, etc.
The emmc version of recovery is for flashing onto the NT and is used presumably for "performing recovery" without external SDcard. Some ROM packages include a recovery.img but not all do (in which case the recovery.img on the NT remains the stock recovery).
I just spent the last hour and a half trying to get a bootable CWM 6 sd card. First I thought I would need to boot into CWM but couldn't get that to work (I vaguely remember doing that to set up my CM7 SD card). Then I realized I can boot into cyanoboot and flash it through that. Using various methods, including the link you provided, I can't find a definite step-by-step guide. In the guide you provided I followed the steps but am stuck on step 5. When I go into SDC Recovery I don't see backup options anywhere, I see a list of recovery options. Here's what I see http://i3.minus.com/inttvFzHpVF88.jpg
Here are the files on the SD card http://i1.minus.com/ibgXFOKRf8DObb.png
Do you have any idea what's going on?
Did you press the Home button "N" to select SDC Recovery? If so, do you have screen-capture of resulting screen?

I tried to get back to the same screen to take a pic when it finally booted into CWM! I guess it takes a few tries to get it to boot. I chose the backup option and it started copying files for a few minutes until it got stuck on a file. It's been stuck on it for the last hour. http://i.minus.com/ivJa6tBF5tl9i.JPG
If I turn it off I have the chance of corrupting the file but since I don't really plan to go back to stock it wouldn't really matter anyway. The card might be full, but I only had like 100 MB of files on there.
If you don't plan to go back to stock, there is no need to back up (worst case you can get the stock ROM from https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard).
If you have more problems you might want to check out your sd card (if need be reformatting it with sd formatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/).

The CM10 thread says to now install CWM to emmc using fastboot. I know it's optional but I want it just in case. I looked it up and installed fastboot but which recovery should I use? The recovery-0.08.3 from the thread or the CWM recovery?
Yes, although it's probably easier to use your same CWM SD (which you just used to flash CM10 ROM and gapps) to flash one of the two flash_CM9-10_CWM_v6.0.1.2_8-16gb_tools_emmc.zip or flash_CM9-10_TWRP_v2.2.2.0_8-16gb_tools_emmc.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958.

No it should not.
Works like a charm, thanks again!
I have one last question: Is there a way I can increase the 1GB data partition? I know android needs space for apps and such but I think a 4GB data partition is reasonable. I have a DVD of Ubuntu so I can access GParted if I need to. If you don't know or don't think I should mess with it that's completely fine, I have a 32GB micro SD that I'm going to use (my current CM7 card) but just want the extra internal space.
The data partition is for apps you download, the media content can go to the Nook media partition or SDcard. If you have many apps with large storage footprint you will likely need extra space. There are tools and methods for repartitioning on XDA (I have not needed to use them), just do a Google search I am sure they will turn up.

Ok, thanks for the info. On second thought though I think I better not mess around with it as everything is working perfectly right now.
Thank you for all your help!
I rooted my thunderbolt yesterday. I backed up my files with titanium backup and CWM. I installed the followingTA version: 7.02.605.10 which is Deodexed... When I booted into recovery, neither titanium backup or CWM contained any backup files. Currently when I attempted to boot my phone the boot loader goes into a loop, the starting, then shutting down. CWM will not read or open my SD card. In addition, when I can get it to not loop, it will shut down right after the flash screen. Just prior to it shutting down, it is a blue screen. I have put new ROMs on my SD card but has been earlier CWM will not read the card. So currently, I cannot flash anything. Any help would be much appreciated. I should have stated earlier, I am definitely a newbie.

I discovered after submitting the post above that CWM will allow me to update superuser (SU) from my SD card. I can continually install it but can do nothing else. When I attempted to install TWRP error message says the installation was aborted. This happens each time I attempt to install anything from the SD card. When the SD card is attached to my PC, all the files are intact.

Thanks for the response. My problem has been solved. With the help of MADMAX, author of 4ext Recovery, I was able to complete the rooting of my Thunderbolt. Big shout out to MADMAX and his product 4 EXT . He exchanged emails with me for the better part of 5 hours walking me through the whole process, from getting his program onto my phone while it was still in disarray. The fact that he was patient enough to do this during this holiday weekend says a lot about him. Obviously his product worked wonderfully. It is a must-have as most of you I'm sure already know. If you have any doubt about this product 4 EXT recovery you should not. One last thing, having to go through this entire process made me understand more of the Android undertakings than ever before.

The ROM to my tablet (which is this exact model) is corrupted and will only boot into the recovery mode but I can't find a ROM for it anywhere. Any way I can get the system.tar, boot.img, and recovery.img that this person posted and make a working ROM out of it? Searches have come up pretty dry. I tried contacting him but no response. I already tried clearing out the cache and factory resetting it, it keeps going into recovery mode so I know it's a problem with the ROM.
Is that a no? I could really use some help here since my tablet is basically useless in its current form.

are you on a custom recovery ex twrp/cwm. and does your tab have a external micro sd card slot
if you are, make a backup to your external micro sd.
pull out your sd put it into your computer copy the files you posted from the other guys thread into your external sd in the twrp/backup/####/corressponding folders to the files you posted. put your card back in. go to twrp restore that backup. then wipe cache/delvik cache/ and data then reboot.(do not use the recovery .img he posted)
No custom recovery, this is the standard Android recovery menu Would that change anything or can I still pretty much do it as you described? It has an external micro sd card slot of course.
Anyone who is able to help me? I honestly looked everywhere for a recovery ROM for this thing but the only people I've found who actually have the tablet are also having problems with it. I'm beginning to think RCA is garbage when it comes to tablets. It was going great until that firmware update screwed everything up.
