Nothing was the same after rooting my atrix.
-The HD games started to freeze, and on the worst cases crashing (e.g. GTA VC).
-Background apps (e.g. Gauge Battery Widget) rebooted very often (specially when browsing).
-When surfing multiple heavy pages, the browser tends to crash sometimes. Also when it crashes, it returns me to the start screen and if i have a live wallpaper running it stops and changes to a generic black screen.
-When trying to upload an image file on an image board, the browser refreshes the page.
-Overheats without reason from time to time. Seriously, its like a pocket heater.
-When the screen animations are activated, returning from landscape to vertical orientation turns the notification bar blurry and when i pull down the notifications tray it turns the screen blurry as well. Though it returns to normal when going back to landscape.
This is a major issue for me since if i turn off the screen animations, i can't tell if an app i opened is running (e.g. YouTube). And like i don't use the stock video player and use another player (e.g. MX player), when the animations are activated instantly crashes when opening a video.
Also before rooting, the battery only lasts me 5 hours without running apps and the problem persists ever since.
One thing. The first time i got the phone it came with stock FROYO 2.2.1 and i changed it right away to GINGERBREAD 2.3.6 skipping the 2.3.4, i unlocked the bootloader first and then rooted it.
Is there anything i can do to fix the problems previously mentioned?
I have a feeling you are an international user and did not flash the ramfix, search for it in development section, download to sd and flash.

Every tutorial i looked for didn't mentioned that, i'll give it a try.
But if i do that, does it mean i will have to do a hard reset?
It is surely mentioned in subsequent posts in the tutorial thread.
RAM fix has nothing to do with data so factory reset (or hard reset as you call it) is not needed.

as for the zip, place it wherever you like and flash it with a custom recovery like cwm or twrp
Yeah I could never understand people who follow a tutorial on forum X then ask about it on forum Y... Makes no sense to me. Why are people on forum Y supposed to know anything about forum X or its contents?
Questions about a tutorial on some forum should be asked on that same forum.
And yeah, everything you need is on XDA, no need to go search for random sources.

Ramfix may not be mentioned in root tutorials because it's related with unlocking bootloader. Since you first unlocked, then rooted, you'll have to flash it anyway.

Off topic, but now that you brought the subject. I have seen this a while ago, and looks tempting but is it convenient for me to use the leaked ICS rom? Is there any bugs in it to be concerned about?
It's a shame that motorola decided to leave the atrix in the shadows with GB, they could at least made ICS the final and definitive update. I mean, the rom looks like it was 99% finished and ready to launch.

I followed both root and bootloader unlock tutorials and NONE brought that out. Since i'm LATAM, it made sense for me to seek in latin android forums instead here because of the firmwares, and boy they skip a lot of useful info in those forums.
Also, how do i exactly run the ramfix? Im eager to fix the buggy notification tray right away, that and fixing my battery not charging at 100%. I tried pulling the battery while charging and it turned worse, it went from 90% to 70%
I also need to know how to wipe the battery data from the CWM.

If it's running well for you, you should consider yourself very lucky. You should also read some of the threads concerning it and related ROMs (AtrICS etc) - the thing is so buggy very few people even wonder anymore how come it was never released.
Even if it's running so great for you as you say, I still wouldn't keep it if I were you. The ROM is a development build, it was never meant to be used as a daily driver. But that's just me.

I agree with u. But Motorola is infamous for such antics. One if the reasons I don't have a RaZr anymore. But it is running good. I will b honest. Its OK. This phone isn't made for anything but GB in mind. I would pick a low end, second hand Windows Phone any day over this.
But this is as far as it goes for Atrix. Jelly Bean...naah.

Use a custom recovery... You can manually adjust the cmdline but flashing the zip is much easier

Its still a lil too advanced for me to use yet, but the ball is rolling fast now. Has there been any word on the potential stable speed of the tegra when overclocked. My incredible was never stable beyond stock.
I did it it, and it was way easier than I thought it was going to be. Not going to bother with the chinese rom though. I haven't heard anyone say it was any better than stock, so why bother.

Eh, not rolling tooo fast, its rolling the same its been for the past week, people are just over hyping everything TOO MUCH, and that rom is practically an update.zip but Chinese (from what i gathered i may be wrong)
Im thinking of trying the chinese rom this weekend to see if I can muddle though the settings and change it to english. I dont read or speak, much less write, chinese. If anybody can tell me that this can or cant be done, let me know before I spend to much time on it... Please....

I got curious and decided to start looking at the files in the zip (one-by-one). So far, each file that I have opened is in English. Since the SBF does work, I'm wondering what would it hurt to at least give it a try and if it all comes up in Mandarin, then I can simply clean everything off and go back to how things were before. I'm not a dev, and I don't pretend like I could be one or know what I'm doing. I know how to flash, sbf and most importantly - ask for help when there's something I don't understand. I haven't seen anything (in the files I've viewed so far) that would lead me to believe that this is anything other than a normal ROM that the Chinese just happen to have.
If anyone else has any thoughts on this matter, please share. My curiosity may just be in overdrive and i've been hungering so long for a ROM that this might just be desperation and a case of huberus of the worst magnitude. I welcome all learned comments/suggestions on the matter.

If you erase data prior to flashing the rom, when you reboot, it will be at the initial android activation screen. It will be in chinese, but you can simply click the icon in the bottom right hand corner and change to english. Only problems I've ran into so far using this method is that the paid is that paid market doesn't seem to work. But with the new market available, you may just be able to install it over top and bring back full functionality.
Once I return home im going to make an all night attempt st conjuring something up based on this rom, I'll post it if I accomplish anything.

Now that is some MAJOR information that I needed to know. Thank you so very much. I will most definitely be trying this tonight when I get home from work. I feel like a kid with a new toy....is that bad? Oh well, can't help myself. Have to tinker. It will be interesting to see what happens during the next step of the test - seeing if it has the same problems as the stock version (rebooting when it wants to, powering itself off while in the charging dock, etc.) We won't even discuss Quadrant speeds or overclocking yet. I think that's the stuff I will leave to you experts. I'm a major novice who is a pseudo adrenaline junkie when it comes to my phone. I'm like Tim Allen wanting it to have "more power, grunt grunt'.

This is exactly the info I was looking for. I am not a dev either. I just know enough to get myself in trouble and then get out of it, most of the time..... I do believe we can just replace the market and if that is so that will be awesome. the next thing we are going to have to figure out is if and how we remove the chinese bloat.
About the issues affecting the stock ROM we have at the moment, from my understanding, the chinese one is basically the same. So the same issues may still exist...
I will attempt this tonight after work and a backup so that I can wipe and sbf to start from scratch...

So I just flashed the Chinese ROM.... I did what c21johnson said and switched it to English using the bottom right hand button... After that its pretty much the same as usual, log in, configure VZW and Google access and then you get to the default moto blur crap that came with the phone... Some bloat has been removed, but again as has been stated previously some has been added... Two apps that are in Chinese that cant be uninstalled... Aside from that its all the same... I am restoring back to the backup I did before flashing the Chinese ROM as it is absolutely nothing special.....
Has anyone tried to overclock the chinese room? I heard its the same as original rom, but since its a custom kernal, it might be able to be overclocked.

Umm, someone needs to explain more about this. It doesn't seem to be anything that isn't already out for us, just it's in Chinese. I see no reason to use this or even have it posted here at all unless you can unlock the bootloader...has anyone tried that yet? I won't hold my breath on this btw.
I fail to see how this is different...our current recovery requires being plugged into a wall, why use this instead?

New way to use this apk
Many thanks to Tenfar for the apk. This is the same but it is not installed form your file manager it is flashed with recovery mode already enabled.

It writes to /preinstall , /system/bin and /data (just as the recovery mode-ON apk does) BUT NOT to /data/data (as the apk relies on). Also charge mode is not available as it needs to be recovery enabled in order to save "you" on a bad rom flash or data data wipe.
Why use it? You may ask:
With this you can now safely do a data wipe and still reboot into cwr by just flashing this as the last step before "reboot system now" it will save you from SBFing if anything keeps you from booting.

My wife and I had Motorola XT720s and her USB borked out the other day. Our carrier replaced hers with a Vibrant and sent her on her way. Needless to say, she liked the XT720 and wants me to take the Vibrant. Since we have been on the most unholy of manufacturers (locked bootloader and no updates-yep was sold and bought on 2.1 [eclair kernal] over a year ago) I have been maintaining both our phones. We have successfully upgraded our phones to 2.2, miui, CM6/7 all with the locked bootloader and a little erseverance and a lot of adb learning.
My question is what can I do with the Vibrant and what are the better ROMs that you have? I am not affraid to get into the guts of the phone and work from that way. She just got it yesterday and when I got home, she pitched the switch to me, so this weekend, I'll root it, back up and then checkout the forums to see what is what.
Good ROMs/ Kernals (stability v experimental)?
Overclocking?
How to unlock the bootloader? I kow how on Nexus S but that is not this obviously.
Known issues with the phone in general, either software or hardware (i.e power button breaks after 2 mos. Stuff like that)
I already looked at the sticky nOOb guide for rooting. Is that update.zip the best way. Or should I use z4 or Superoneclick? I used Universal Androot before but that doesn't support Froyo kernals.
Basically, what do you like and and your opinions. The decision will be mine but I like to be informed. And I actually do like to read the threads, but we just got this yesterday and wanted to put out the feelers.

Imo, that would be froyo like bionix to cm7 respectively.. cm7 flys but its batt sucks and gps is practicallu nonexistant (not that good iin froyo tho)
There is oc up to like 1.7ghz tho my phone doesnt do more than 1.6 stable...
Also, never use kies under any circumstance and learn to use odin Well.

That's great. Just the sort of thing I am looking for.
Couple of questions.
As far as OC. Is that an app or is it through a differnt kernal. I know that some kernals oc and undervolt or stock cpu and undervolt. There is an app in the market that was for Motorola that was called Milestone Overclock (I know real original right) and with that and SetCPU was able to oc my 550mhz to 1100. Is there a Vibrant app similar?
How do I tell if my hardware is locked? Once I know, then I will search the threads for that. I already saw some in here with regards to how to do it. I already got into stock recovery last night just to check and see if I could (have't put CWR in or rooted yet-will do that later on tonight). Does this mean it isn't HWL or am I completely missing the target?
Odin I assume is what RSDlite is to Motorola. You power up to bootloader, connect to PC and flash "stock" sbf files (which is basically what came in the box). I always like to have that on hand just in case. I'll google and check it out.

Read the noob stockier guide. Has all the info you need. Also in the development section down load the aio vibrant toolbox. Has Odin, all the files you need. I recommend the rom bi winning V3. It has a kernel that can overclock. You need an app for that tho. I like set CPU because it has profile management for off screen, charging etc.. good luck.
To tell if your hardware locked turn your phone off and hold down both volume rockers and press the power button when you see the vibrant logo pop up, keep holding untilled it goes away then pops up again. Then let go of the power. It should boot into recovery mode. It will be black screen with blue letters that say reboot phone, reinstall packages, wipe data. It may take a few times to get the hang of it. If your unable to then your phones is hardware locked.
Okay, youce been in recov so youre not hw locked.... greggory, you only have to hold power button till you see anything oon the screen the first time... holding it after that just makes it hw reboot whivh works, but is a waste of time.
Okay OP, odin has some nice ffeatures that let you flash bootloaders and firmware both.. truthfully, you can flash ANY rewritable media in your phone except internal and external sd from.odin afaik.
Oc requires an oc kernel and an oc app... app for ocing include voltage control, which was made for samsung galaxy s, set cpu, which i dislike, cpu master, no-frills ... all of em work most of the time and i use Voltage control..

I dl'd Tegrak OC and am using it just fine. Any suggestions on stock kernal settings. Not applying any ROMs/Kernals for now, but setting suggestions would be helpful.
Got USB connection loop. Think I have a fix for that. Need to test some more.
Do I really have to name it update.zip to make "it" work, or can I name it anything else. Tried a few other names and they don't seem to install. Update.zip v buttermilkbiscuit.zip. why?

To change fonts, where do I put ttf? In settings there is a font changer, but where is the folder for that. Know it isn't /system/fonts BC that is a global changer but can't find it anywhere else. Looked in /data, /android and /sdcard. Clues?

I'll flash soon enough, just want to get my feet wet a bit. Only had phone for two days, so still picking and searching. More suggestions on ROMs/kernals, other than above?
Zipthemer is sweet. It takes all unzipped Metamorph.xmls, packages into one .zip and also creates and undo.zip too. Great themer.

This was fun to read, seeing Wood just entering the Vibrant community. The new guy on the block. Now look at you, you're one of the most recognized Vibrant users.
I remember my first post on XDA. I was messing around with Rom Manager and accidentally installed CWR. You wouldn't believe how much I was panicking, I thought I had bricked my phone! Lol, shows how much I knew.
Actually, that's why my name is "N00B_IN_N33D", because I was a noob who was in need of help. After I figured out how to Odin back to stock, which removed the (what I thought was) evil CWR I thought I wouldn't mess with my phone anymore. However s15274n talked me into flashing a custom froyo rom, Trigger, if I remember correctly. From there I blossomed in my understanding of Android and my Vibrant...
Anyhow, back on topic. It's amazing how experienced people have become here.

Speaking of the way-back machine ... I can't even remember what Froyo was like. Do you? Then there's Eclair (yikes!). :what: I do remember the jump from Froyo to GB was pretty substantial. CM7 with those novel toggle bars and major speed boosts. Then ICS just took the phone to another level.
I remember the first time I rooted my phone, I was soooo damn nervous that I'd end up with a brick. I was just using SuperOneClick ... lol. The first time using Odin after reading all the horror stories here. The first time waiting through the VLF EXT4 conversion (seemed to take forever).

The first time I flashed a Froyo Voodoo kernel, I was in my basement watching a west coast baseball game and it was late. The wife and kids were asleep and like you said, it took forever. Forgot to turn the volume off when I did it. So I am sitting there watching the game and I see the Bali palm tree. I think cool, whatever. I return to the game and out of nowhere, I hear this lady's voice. Thought it must have been the parabolic on TV picking up some lady in the stands. Then I hear it again. Kind of freaked me out until I realized it was LINDA. I'll tell ya, if you are ready for her, she'll freak you the f**k out.
Anyways, thanks for the kind words. I remember one of the many freak out, panic sessions I've had in the past and there was always someone who helped me out. Just feel it is my duty to give back. Now if I can solve this Encryption Error bug, I'll have come full circle. It is driving me nuts.

I was in the bathroom taking a dump while the conversion went on... it freaked me out, and my mom thought i was watching porn in there -.-'

This will likely be a long post, so I'll start off with short summary:
After years of being excited about the android OS, I've now grown very tired of it and can't find a good solution to solve the issues.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and provide feedback and insight.
Background
I've been a web developer for ~15 years, even worked on a very popular android tablet before it was released. I currently have the title of "SDE" but I also deal with a lot of UI/UX work. I'm pretty tech savvy, love control, love to hack (eg my main machines are hackintoshes). I bought an EVO 3D shortly after it came out as it was dual core and had the most RAM. A friend is an android enthusiast and it sure seemed like android, while lacking polish, offered the flexibility and community for me to be able to have the level of polish I want.
Problems
Over the past year+ I haven't had much spare time. While other phones on other carriers are easy to root and mod, the EVO 3D on Sprint has been a PITA. My recent attempt at a custom PRL was a great example of how this "open" phone was more difficult to work with than a "locked" iPhone. There's been no easy way to root this phone and turn s-off. Yeah, I know there's two methods but both of them require more time than I have right now at any given time. And the bigger issue for me is that they're much bigger kludges than I think an "open" OS should be.
I waited for the ICS OTA update and am disappointed. While it solved some issues, it created more. And I feel like I've got both arms tied behind my back since almost any fix requires root. I hate reading that some of the fixes are in jelly bean, yet there's no easy way for me to upgrade.
Specific issues
- Llama doesn't work in ICS. I <3 Llama
- Battery usage is often horrible - yesterday I checked my email a couple times and the battery lasted all of 6 hours. I tried killing all tasks, but those who say that's useless since froyo are right. This issue keeps happening... it's like the CPU gets stuck at 100% for some reason.
- Network sucks. I don't understand why I can get 10Mb down and 2Mb up with speedtest.net, but the responsiveness of any app that uses the internet is sluggish. Even with my own tests on my own web servers, it' still sluggish. And latency is fairly low... seems like there might be a lot of packet loss for some reason.
- Camera sucks. The camera on my wife's EVO 4G works better but still sucks. All I've found here are threads confirming how much it sucks.
- App specific issues:
-- I have my sync settings set not to link contacts with LinkedIn, but it still frequently asks me anyway.
-- Contacts are duplicating: I had them all on my phone, and all synced via my gmail account. Then the other day it decides they're all different and duplicates my contacts.
- It unlocks itself. Sometimes I pull my phone out of my pocket and the phone is unlocked, even though I had a PIN set. I can use it for a minute or two, then suddenly I get greeted with a lock screen (or sometimes just half a lock screen.)
- I don't like having to set a lock screen in order to change the wifi password. Seems really odd to me. It wasn't like that in gingerbread.
I also have a hard time finding information. Seems like half of what I find doesn't apply to the EVO 3D, though may work for many other phones (even other HTC phones) and the bulk of the rest no longer works because of some other issue (or is just outdated.)
Anyway, I could go on, but I think you get the idea. If I had time, I'd see what I could to do contribute to a ROM project, but that just doesn't seem like it's in the cards right now. Am I just not a good fit for android? Is the bigger issue this phone? Would I actually be able to solve the above issues if I did go ahead and root it fully... perhaps with the wire method?

Well I understand where you're coming from. Honestly, its personal preference. From my experience, once I went s-off and fully rooted it, it was so much better. A lot of the custom roms here are fantastic and blow stock out of the water. You can do so much more with root, and easily fix all of the problems that you have. Every. Single. One. It's all about just trying it, and if you don't like it, you can easily just try something new, that's the glory of it

blame the phone manufacturers and the carriers, not android... none of your problems actually seem like android ones

After you htcdev unlock, you need to flash a stock rom with root, I would try my rom, common sense v1.5 (stock) its in the link in my siggy, I did it on that and it worked just fine. Or you can flash a stock rooted rom that Virus posted up, its somewhere in the dev forum, once that's flashed you're good to go

Under all the glitz, Android runs on a Linux kernel.
Linux is very secure in that only the "root" account can make changes to vital system processes.
So yes, gaining root access is vital to making changes to your android device.
IMO, it is too easy to gain root in Android. It should be harder so all these noobs won't be on here f'ing up their phones.

I use *nix all day long. Was just running commands to modify permissions, using sudo, for git. Even in OS X gaining root access is fairly easy. But what you're telling me is, the only way to backup my ROM is to wipe it first with a ROM that is rooted? (In other words, no way to backup my ROM.)

If you find the Su binaries, you can flash it via recovery via fastboot, right over the stock rom that you're running RIGHT NOW. I would google it, I don't have one off hand that I can attach for you.

I found the su binaries, but haven't had any luck getting them installed. Every walkthrough I've found doesn't work. Tried to put a recovery on it, but that also won't go. One method requires root. The instructions for another said three button method but that doesn't seem to work on this phone...
You have to unlock the bootloader before trying to install recovery.

Have you tried mpgrimm2's guide for flashing recovery and superuser? It's part of a larger thread that covers rooting, S-OFF, bootloaders and other stuff for the Evo 3D and I know he works hard at keeping it up-to-date.
I suggested that earlier in this thread, and if you can't find the answers you are looking for there I'd be surprised.

Thanks for the insistance on that thread. I tried CWM using that guide and it didn't work (wouldn't ever boot into CWM even though everything appeared to install ok). I tried 4ext using a 4ext guide and it didn't work. I tried 4ext using the same guide as you linked to which references CWM, and it did work.
BusyBox is saying it may not be rooted, but RootChecker says it is. At least now I think I'm far enough along to make a backup of the stock ROM. Thanks much
Launching BusyBox some more it seems to work fine. So far I've:
- Make a backup of the stock ROM
- Deleted the crapware
- Backed up my apps with TB
- Used SetCPU to lower the clockspeed when idle. Now I'm under 100ma when idle. Pre ICS I had a hard time getting under 300ma.

So as the title suggests, this will be my first time rooting any phone. I attempted to root my HTC Inspire 4G, nearly bricked it, and kinda gave up on the whole thing.
Now, with my HTC One loaded with unecessary AT&T apps and other stupid bloatware, I find myself in the same position. I know there are many guides for rooting the One, but are there any that are particularly newbie-friendly? Also, I understand that after rooting, OTA updates are impossible. My question is...is 4.2.2 available currently? What about 4.3? And most importantly, how easy/difficult is it to install an update?

If you have never rooted, an HTC device is probably a little intimidating compared to other manufacturers.
Now, if you just get a guide and follow it to a t, you'll be fine.
You can always get thr phone back to a stock state if you want an ota update, buy if you are running a custom rom, that dev will typically update that particular rom with the ota update.

anyhow, i myself was in the same boat as you last week.
my main gripe with the stock HTC one is the fact that you cannot "wake up" the phone any other way
except for the power button. so annoying- it was driving me crazy.
also i have unlimited ATT data plan, and so my wifi tether was dead, and wanted to mod for that as well.
anyhow, i was on the fence regarding rooting my phone, but then i
finally ran into the BULLETPROOF kernel thread here at XDA, and i had to have it.
as i began to research my quest to brick my phone, i ran into this guy on youtube: qbking77
he has some great videos on youtube that will give you the exact instructions and directions on
what you will need to do to root your HTC phone.
His English is easy to understand, he has a support webpage/blog with links to everything you need, very very good and easy tutorial, probably what convinced me to do it.
so here are the steps that he gives:
#1. UNLOCK BOOTLOADER HERE:

BAM!...you are done rooting.
He uses TWRP (custom recovery), and TWRP has been an easy interface for me, no gripes.
so, anyhow, after you have gone through those steps, if I can suggest a couple other things I ran into.
one of the main reasons I was wanting to root my phone, was to install the bulletproof kernel.
this kernel allows for you to “swipe to unlock” your HTC phone.
it’s super cool, and that was the first thing I wanted to install.
I went ahead and installed it, happy as can be…
everything seemed cool, but after a day or so, went to open my camera,
and what do you know, black camera death screen, NO CAMERA!
I was like WTH, ???
jumped back in the forums (guess I should have researched a little further)
and I am not sure why, or what the deal is, but there is a glitch with the kernel and 4.1.2 android version. some people were fine but there are a lot like me and had the camera error.
so long story longer,
I ended up trying to re-install every single bulletproof rom version that was available,
still no luck.
finally i PM'd another user on these forums, he said he installed the ANDROID REVOLUTION HD (4.2.2 ROM)
i went ahead and installed, then I installed the bulletproof kernel m7-3.4 (for 4.2.2)
and what do you know, 100% just fine, absolutely sweet.
only other thing I’ve done was install the ULTIMATE RIT_ARHD_12.1 (HD icon them package)
and man, my phone has a whole new life, and I am absolutely loving it.
anyhow, hope that helps,
those qbking77 vids are the best thing to use in my opinion,
(oh and qbking77 has a vid to install "free wifi hotspot for the HTC ONE"....took all but 5 minutes and that was the icing on the cake!)

id like to throw my post in here if I could. I bought a factory unlocked One from htc.com and thought I was going to get updates from htc. They recently told me I still had to wait for updates from my carrier (att). with this bit of news Ive decided I want to put a stock google 4.2 on my one. Are these instructions posted above good for me to use? sense is something I can do without, has someone made a rom with 4.2 with sense as well?

I have the ViperOne rom, it's 4.2.2 and Sense 5....
Best advice is take a step back and give it a few days. You will absorb everything there is in time. And if you **** up it Can be fixed ^_^

its close to stock with little tweaks here and there and its ALL I have been using. The Dev Mike1986 updates it rather often!
Plus if you are alittle worried at the moment, I would recommend keeping it simple and not worrying about SuperCID and S-off...while I to am both of these things, it isnt really necessary
You don't need to be rooted to wake your device with something beside the power button.
I use 'Power On Volume' and my volume button wakes my device. I use a different app that allows me to lock my HTC One with a touchscreen button.

I picked up the HTC One a few days ago from AT&T (coming from iOS). Like 9aj9, some things were finicky like not being able to wake the phone other than the power button, I can see the gripes with the volume button placement and are easily triggered. I got a slim case to give me space away from the volume rocker.
Anyway, I was going to flash to the Home2Wake kernel, but the bulletproof kernel sound even better! However, seems it's most stable if Android Revolution HD ROM in installed (is that the right word?).
So, I have one question before I proceed - can I revert the HTC One to stock 4.1.2 after flashing to Revolution ROM? I'm asking because I am still within the return window and would like the option of getting it back to stock if I wanted to return it.
Im pretty certain u can revert, when u go through qbking77's vids, i believe he has a vid in reverting back to stock.
But one main thing is u have to run a full backup once u have TWRP installed....

Not needed. The firmware that comes with the phone works on 4.2 roms also (the old If it isnt broken dont fix it comes to mind here ). Some of us just like to have the latest greatest everything so I did the firmware update as well, but like I said, its not necessary.
Also, when installing a 4.2 rom keep in mind that the file system will be different as 4.2 has support for multiple users.
Maybe I caught you before you went ahead and rooted, but it was honestly a piece of cake. I pretty much followed what 9aj9 wrote (thread 3). If you follow qbking77's videos, you can't go wrong. I used a W7 machine, even thought I usually use a Mac, but qbking77 used a W7, so I was able to do each step exactly. I did download the most recent SuperSU (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053) instead of the older version form the site.
Anyway take your time, make sure you have a few hours. Also, realize you will lose everything when you unlock the boot loader. I backed up most things with Helium, but you have to re-install all the apps, Helium just backs up the data.
So when the Samsung S2 first came out . i paid to get it unlocked they rooted it and installed busybox rooted etc.. but during the boot sequence it says VILLAIN ROM which leads me to believe it has a custom rom .im not sure about the custom recovery im on Gingerbread 2.3.3
PROBLEMS
Batery Lasts 2-4 Hours on stand by / moderate use checking sms calls No internet - also wifi,Data if off all the time and power saver mode is ON
lots of LAGG ive tried overclocking etc. but i think the custom rom is slowing it down as my mates S2 is real fast compared to mine

Ok.....the battery life *may* simply be a result of the age of the battery.......they don't last forever, and when they near the end of their life, the symptoms you describe (short battery life) do occur.
concerning the sluggish ROM.....you said it's gingerbread.....so that is likely to be part of the reason.....your comparison with your friends S2....not really a fair test as his phone is likely to be running ICS or JB....both of which will have tweaks and optimizations that GB doesn't have. Also your ROM/phone is likely to have collected lots of temporary/redundant/unused/old files that are bloating things up.
You have some choices to make.......
1) continue to use your GB ROM, and perform a data wipe/factory reset to clean things up a bit
2) upgrade to a newer, more up to date ROM with all the tweaks and optimizations that I mentioned before. Both options will cause a potential loss of data.....but there are apps available that will help to minimize this, and for games, there (in SOME cases) is the possibility to back up then restore your game saves and progress (I have done this myself with mine craft)
You may well lose your unlocked status.......but again, there are apps available that will help to return that unlocked status.......good luck with whatever path you choose......and feel free to ask on this thread if you need any more advice........

Go settings>>about phone and scroll down as far as you can....then take a screenshot and post it here.....it will show me if you're running a custom ROM or not.
You say you aren't getting OTAs? That's a good indication that you are at least rooted and running a custom kernel. But it's best to be certain and the screenshot will provide the info needed.....OTAs would automatically be downloaded if you were fully stock, so that's another indication of custom. And I really don't know if flashing another ROM will 're lock' your phone, but it CAN be sorted if that happens........

il post it now also I don't won't to 're root the s2 as firstly it's not mine and also I had a lot of trouble with rooting my one s it lead to a soft brick and 5 months of waiting
OK....no worries.....first things first though.....we need to find out about your current setup......
And as for re rooting.....Samsung phones are far easier and less temperamental than HTC....lol

Yes...you are fully custom....your phone is running villainROM.
What files don't you want to lose..... If it's pictures, videos and music, they can be copied off a fully working phone to a PC.
If it's SMS's and call records, there are apps available that will do this. If it's game progress data, it gets more tricky.......
If the game played straight from the moment it was downloaded, you should be able to use a root permitted browser to find the files and copy them somewhere safe in order to restore them after the flash. If the game needed to download 'assets' on first run, copying and restoring these files WON'T work as these downloaded files are likely to be OS specific.....restoring them to a newer OS is likely to cause instability and force closes........

To find the files you might want to save, I'd recommend 'root explorer'
I use it myself and it does everything I want. I found it here on XDA but to save you some searching, here's a link to a copy of it in my drop box........
