Flash rom - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello;
If I have samsung galaxy s2 on stock, and I updated it via ota or odin to jellybean, do I need only stock rom of gingerbread to get it back to it's original state before the update, or I need other files?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards.

You don't need other files, just update.

I'm not sure what you just said but you can make a nandroid back up via CWM or online nandroid back up app.
You can also read how to make a back up.

Hi;
Thanks all for your answers. So just to confirm this, if I extracted the rom from my phone before the update to jellybean, that rom is all I need to get it back to it's orignal state(gingerbread), right?
Regards.

You're getting an OTA update right?
If you ever wanna go back to YOUR actual ROM as it is now you're gonna have to make a back up.
Anyways, once you go JB you won't feel like to go back to GB.

If you're going to stay on stock android then you can back-up with kies.

Thanks all for the info.

Backing up and restoring ROMS

I rooted my Vibrant and then performed a ROM backup using ROM manager. My question is, if I wanted to try a different ROM, will I have any issues flashing back to stock if I need to? I want to be able to flash back to stock and still get OTAs if I want to sell the phone sometime down the road.
thanks

Yes, you can use the nandroid backup to restock the tab.
Just flash the nandroid backup of the stock ROM (do a full wipe if you want)and then flash the stock recovery using ODIN.
yeah do you have a stock 3.1 touchwiz CANADIAN Clockwork mod backup. I could certainly use it if that's possible by you to post one. Thanks

Want to try out some custom firmwares, but want to be safe at the same time

Hi guys...
I have a galaxy s3 and up to this point I've been pretty satisfied with the original firmware...
However, I'd like to try out some of custom made ones, but since there's a big update on the way, I want to be safe doing so...
What I mean is basically this:
Can I somehow backup my stock firmware, try out some custom builds and then get the OTA update when it's available?
I don't really care about guarantee, but I'd really like the option to get OTA updates from samsung in the future (if I for some reason want to do so).
I remember an old post, where someone talk about this, but I can't find it
Please help me
Most definitely. You can find stock builds here in this forum and simply flash using ODIN to get back to stock firmware when you want to. Be advised this does wipe your data so have a good backup of it before hand.

And then it would be as my phone never were flashed and OTA and other samsung only stuff would work?
You will have to use triangle away or something like that to reset your flash counter if you want to send your phone to repair and make it appear as you have never flashed before but unless you break your phone, don't bother. And yes the other Samsung stuff should probably work.

If you flash your phone with a custom ROM for instance Resurrection Remix or Cyanogenmod you'd not directly be able to restore a stock ROM.
You will have to find one http://androidfirmwares.net that's for your region and flash it through Odin. Then you'll be able to update OTA and KIES.

You mean restoring from a nandroid? Because I was able to restore ICS whilst using JB - I did it multiple times.

Agree the advise given was plain wrong .
Nandroid restore a backed up stock rom yes yes yes .
The only but is that the backed up rom is of course rooted .

Okay... now I'm even more confused
Let me see if I get this right?
One way to do it would be to:
1) Download tools and rom (odin, CM and drivers etc)
2) Flash new cool rom
3) Donwload original samsung rom
4) Flash old boring rom back to phone
5) Use tool to reset counter (optional)
Now, my phone would like as if I had never ever rooted and flashed my rom
Is that more or less correct?

GT-P7510 XAC Samsung Stock ROM for Canada

Has anyone managed to download the Canadian ICS stock ROM for the GT-P7510 from samsung-updates.com? If so, could you upload it somewhere and post a link? The samsung-updates site is too slow and downloads fail after 2 or 3 hours.
The address/filename is samsung-updates.com/fw/Samsung-Updates.com-GT-P7510_XAC_1_20120830161536_bmd2z2f4lq.zip
My Tab failed during the OTA upgrade and froze at the first logo screen after boot. Samsung suggested that I wipe it to factory state, but having not copied my Titanium Backup folder to my PC, I decided to try flashing a stock ROM first using Odin3. Since samsung-updates was not working good enough, I manged to find a USA (XAB) Stock 3.2 ROM from a link in an XDA forum that I could get. I now have my Tab backed-up to my PC, but would like to switch to the XAC Ice Cream Sandwich ROM Any version of ROM with the XAC country code would let me wipe it and get the OTA update to ICS.
Thanks!
Edit - Possible ROM versions I could use are P7510VLLH3 or P7510VLKL2. Both are on samsung-updates.com, but after a day and a half I cannot download any file from there successfully. I tried on my Galaxy S3 via Wi-Fi and 4G and 2 computers.

Thank You! I have my Tab on ICS from the USA Stock ROM, but now I can switch it back to Canadian! Meanwhile, samsug-updates.com has been completely off-line this weekend. Their Twitter feed says they are upgrading and correcting issues.
Samsung was suggesting I wipe it and lose all my data. I'm glad I was able to resurrect it and get my backups done instead.

Thanks again! I used your 3.2 image and got an OTA upgrade from Samsung. That seemed to go through all the motions but failed and left it at 3.2. I then used Kies to get it to Canadian Android 4.0.4. Now I can re-root and restore my apps from the Titanium Backup that I had done when on the American 4.0.4 stock ROM. My Tab is still under warranty, so I wanted to try to keep it as close to Stock as possible, or at least maintain the ability to get it there if necessary.
It took so long for Samsung to get ICS out that I doubt that they will roll out Jelly Bean for the GT-P7510. I will have to try it out on a custom ROM.
In the end, I have lost none of my data. My wife, on the other hand, woke up a few weeks ago to find all of her Contacts gone from her Galaxy S (9000M). I will be putting CWM and possibly Titanium Backup on her phone and on my S III after this experience.

[Q] Samsung galaxy s2 firmware problem

Hi there,
I have the galaxy s2 from about a year ago, bought it form Dubai. Anyways till now I still didn't get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 and I'm stuck with the 4.0.3. I'm starting to face some problems with my device and I think this is because bugs in the 4.0.3, the device over heats while charging or when I have my wifi or 3G on. I downloaded the "AOKP MR1 Milestone 1 ROM for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 (Exynos)" along with "Gapps" but didn't install them yet:
The only problem is that in order to install the new rom I have to flash my device and root it and I'm not really happy with that. Is there a safe way to get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 without rooting my device. I tried the over the air update but it said no updates found, I also tried kies and still no luck. What can I do to get the new update without having to erase everything on my device.
Also can I take a backup copy of my ROM in case I format "flash" my device for any reason. I want to take a complete backup of everything on my phone including the unrooted original firmware 4.0.3 that it came with so that even if I install any other rom I can flash it and get back with my original one, is this possible.
Please help, looking forward for your repiles

I'm actually very new to xda, I've been searching for about 4 days now and currently I'm reading other similar threats on xda. But I don't really know where or what to search for. All I want to do is update my phone without flashing it, also if it's possible to take a backup copy of my original firmware please reference me where to start. Didn't mean to bother or bug anyone here, it's just that I'm very new to this
No hard feelings
You need to root to bk up what you have now mate. 4.0.4 is the brick bug firmware not 4.0.3 . Do you want to root your phone.? Do you want to put a custom rom or Samsung rom on your phone?
Just go to sammobile.com firmware page.

maybe iPhone is better for you

Thanks for your reply, how do I root my phone and after I root it what do I need to download to backup everything. I don't really prefer to have a custom rom on my device but I have no problem trying anything on at as long as I have a copy of the original firmware where I can restore it back.

Thanks I'll check it out, what do I look for so I can make sure that it's compatible with my GT-I9100 device, or are they all compatible depending on which region I choose. Currently I'm in Egypt So whats the best firmware to download
Get whatever ROM you want.
Worst case, flash a new modem.
Sent from the little guy
Lsw is the new one. Uk base but as gastonw said it dont matter just download your modem you have now so you can restore it later "apriliam3 for them". To root get a dori ics kernel and flash that either with odin "tar" or in recovery "zip with sig" put on ext sd and update in stock recovery and that will give you root and cwm recovery when you have done that go back into recovery and do a nandroid bk up there. Get titanium back up in playstore and bk up your apps with. I link my contact's with google so they restore easily.
Just see chow to flash ROM's witch odin and choose ROM from Samsung development sub forum.
Thank you all for your replies,
I managed to root my device and advised by all of you, and I made backup using the cwm that was installed automatically after I successfully rooted it. In the backup folder that was created I noticed a file called "system.ext4.tar" is this the original android version that came with the phone because as I mentioned above I want to be on the safe side and have a backup of my original OS that came with the phone in case of anything went wrong then I can restore everything including the original current android version. Second step that I want to do is to flash my phone and install the jellybeans. I found two version version 4.1.2 which I know is compatible with the phone and version 4.2.2 but I'm not really sure if it's compatible or not. So what do you guys suggest I should install on my device
looking forward for your replies
