[Guide] Reodexing your SGS3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This guide is for reodexing your SGS3, such as UltimaROM, Omega, Foxhound, CodecROM, _null, Sotmax and others (I'm just listing off the top off my head).
It's not terribly tough and 100% of the credit belongs to rujelus22 for his amazing work on his AIO tool. This guide is just for deodexing/odexing, but you can use that tool for other things.
Firstly, why would you want to odex your ROM?
Well, this will help you understand more:
http://www.xda-developers.com/xda-tv-2/pro-tip-number-5-why-you-should-odex-and-deodex-xda-tv/
It's very useful and saves on battery life and makes the phone slightly more responsive.
Consider:
When you have downloaded and installed your chosen ROM you should odex it back up for the speed and agility odexing affords you. However you should ONLY do this after you are happy with your setup. I.E., install any mods you wanted and then Odex your phone.
If you want to add mods later, say, perhaps, your developer releases a new mod, or patch for your ROM you will NEED to Deodex the ROM before applying a patch or new mod. This is important. Please do not pester your dev about an error if you have not done this.
In my opinion, it can take maybe 30 minutes to Deodex, apply your mods/patch, and then Reodex using this tool, but the benefits are worth it.
You should also perform these actions AFTER a successful boot. You should flash the ROM. Boot. skip the setup pages and get to the homepage, then do this odexing.
How to do it:
Firstly, head off over to Rujelus22's AIO script thread and download it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1955745
Don't forget to click "Thanks"
Make sure you also download these the Android-SDK and the Java Development kit. The SDK is necessary for the Deodexing, I believe, in case you want to do that later:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33268059&postcount=2
After that, extract the AIO script somewhere useful where you can find it again and run the "Start_AIO.bat" file. This will set up some folders in the directory you extracted to and then open the start page

}
After this make sure your phone is plugged into you computer and that USB Debugging mode is on in the Developers Options. ALSO, you must have an "Insecure Kernel" such as any custom kernel (Siyah, Perseus, Boeffla) or Wanam/zoot1's repacked stock kernel.
If you do not have an Insecure Kernel head off to Chainfire's adbd Insecure thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687590
You might considering buying it on Google Play, if you like, but there is a free XDA version.
After you are plugged in, on USB debugging and have an Insecure Kernel, load the AIO script and choose option "22" which reads "Odex the ROM on your phone". You will be given the opportunity to take a nandroid backup at this point.
Sit back and let it do it's thing. It will take about 10 minutes, and it will seem to hang on the clean up bit. Fear not, because it IS doing something. Your phone will automatically reboot when it has finished.
You're done! Once you have done that little bit of setting up... in future it is as easy as opening the script, hitting 22 and sitting back.
Notes/FAQ:
Sometimes it can constantly loop around the first page as though it is doing a first run. To solve this, go into "AIO_FOLDER/tools/Settings/" and create a new .txt file called "firstrun". Make the contents of the file 1. Just "1" and nothing else.
Sometimes it can say that you don't have remount access and the Odex option will not show. Similar to the point above, go into "AIO_FOLDER/tools/Settings/" and make a .txt file called "remount" and place a single 1 in the folder.
Deodexing can take some time. Be patient.

Can any ROM be Odexed this way, such as CyanogenMod, for example?

I think so, yes. As long as the script can find the bootclasspath!

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I've always stuck with Odexed ROMs for all the reasons that Adam discussed in the video, so I'd be very pleased if I could Odex CM. Best of both worlds.

When i select 99 and 4 and 2 the script closes...:/
Also all odexing options are greyed out...i followed the instructions just fine, any help?

Woot woot!
Working like a charm now,thanks!
Maybe you should add this to the op?
I still can't select 99->4->2 but now odexing options are available!

Nice tut, I'm a big fan of reodexing since I first tried it,

I'm kind of new to this things and have to questions;
1.- First specifically to UltimaROM, does it have to be odex ?
2.- When it says I should do it after I have the Rom as I want it, it does not interfere with installing apps right?

You do not have to odex if you don't want to, but I personally recommend it.
And installing apps from the Play Store will be 100% fine on an odex'd ROM.
However, ANY mod that changes a system app is likely to interfer. In this case you can deodex, then flash the mod, then reodex (optional).
This is mainly for those that flash, then don't mod. However modding is not impossible and it's worth the extra 10 minutes to do this.

I have installed everything according to the tutorial. But in the cmd window..its written Your Kernel does not support this feature [adb remount]
I am using the perseus Kernel. I insecured the kernel using "adb insecure" from chainfire. I think it was not needed but i did it when nothing was working. It still does not work
any help?
P.S. debugging is enabled
EDIT : SOLVED -------> USING THIS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39378436&postcount=164

Dang it, I feel like an idiot. I cannot figure out how to setup the variable path from the instructions. Do I need to make a new one in both system and user, or do I edit one that is already there?
What do I name them?

I tried to reodex UltimaRom v11 and had to modify the script too (set remountavlible=yes) in order to see option 22 so you might want to write that in the OP Kryten, it could prevent the question from being asked over and over
Maybe it is specific to some roms ?

I do everything as I should, but after I press any button after it says "Press any key to continue" at the screen with the snake head (Or whatever that is),it will give me an empty command prompt. No menu,no nothing.Any ideas guys? It's really starting to get on my nerves...

How to know if my phone was odexed?
After running script it says:
The phone rebooted, but there is no *odex files in System/App. Strange..

Hey there! Just want to confirm something.. It is said in the OP that we have to "deodex" to flash a new mod or patch. Is a ROM upgrade considered a patch? Do I have to deodex first to flash a new ROM version? Or it is safe to just flash the new ROM version while I'm still odexed and just re-odex after upgrading the ROM?
Thanks!

I have an odex folder on my internal SD card. Folder size is almost 500mb. Can I delete this folder.

this is probably the easiest way to cook your hermes rom.

-it supports several ways of adding files to the rom: drag and drop or browsing
-easy removal of files in the rom
-easy way of editing the volumelayout (initflashfiles.dat)
-easy compiling
-easy dumping
-a console that shows you whats going on
-registry editing ( not yet fully functional, leave your fingeres off that )
well everything is easy
i'm sorry for this crappy presentation, it's late now and i'll have to go to the hospital tomorrow and i'll be off for a few days.. feel free to ask pof/olipro if you got some questions
a quick introduction on how to add your own theme (.tsk) file to a rom:
1.) download it and extract
2.) install the java runtime (required for achefs script, i inted to port his script to c or c# but that might take a while) , the run time can be found in "install me first"
3.) start the executable
4.) you will notice that all buttons except "select source rom" are grayed out.. push "select source rom" and browse into 'ROMS\' select the 'Clean-WM6-OS.nb' rom there
5.) now "dump rom" and "compile rom" became available... we don't need to dump the rom for this purpose (do this if you want to edit the initflashfiles or if you want to remove files from the rom) at this stage don't push anything
now comes the fun part
6.) simply drag and drop the tskfile(s) of your choice into the "files to be added" listbox
7.) now give your romfile a name using the outputrom editbox
8.) you're done, click "compile rom" and lean back.
yes, rom cooking was never that easy and enjoyable
last warning, use this at your own risk. this is beta software. i'm not responsible if your device gets damaged during any of this nor is your provider or xda-developers.
edit: ai ai ai, i cant believe i've actually packaged the "branded sheep".. sorry guys... it's fixed now contains the real vanilla rom
besides that you can now download the thing without any rom at all...
download: http://rapidshare.com/files/18812655/_romkoch_full.rar.html (with wm6.0 vanilla rom)
download: http://rapidshare.com/files/18811961/_romkoch_light.rar.html ( without wm6.0 vanilla rom )
installation notes: v0.1 has a small bug that prevents you from having foldernames with spaces so for this first release install to c:\xda-dev\kitchen or something like that.. make sure there are no spaces
well done, thanks for the kitchen!
WOW! This has been a big week for the hermes. Thanks dutty for a great and easy way to use a lot of great tools. Thanks for the help and the next step forward!
WOW! That's fantastic!
I'm sorry for asking, but, can *someone* who is good at cooking please provide a tutorial on how to add a program from a .cab file? I have the tools to open the cab file, but, what do I do with the pieces?
Sorry, one final question. The 'clean' WM6 rom.. Is it the vanilla rom? or K's rom? or...?
I'm pretty sure the clean one is vanilla.

seems to be kyphur's rom. I just used the tool to flash a slightly modified rom and it shows xda-live on today screen.
Holy crap, this is gonna take all the technical know-how out of it. On one hand, that's great for people like me because we can start cooking ROMs without knowing what we're doing. On the other hand, that really sucks for people like me because we can start cooking ROMs without knowing what we're doing.
But THANK YOU! Now I can get started and fill in a lot of the gaps later (though I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not).
And Vista compatible, I see? Very nice!

open the cab with wince cab manager, extract files and drag&drop them to the kitchen, edit initflashfiles.dat to tell the specific location of the files on imgfs, if the cab also contains registry settings add them to default.hv (or user.hv if the settings are on HLMU), that should be enough for most of the apps
Thanks Dutty !
WIll test this right away be flashing my Extra Device.

[ROM][2.3.6] CoZ ROM v3.1 Final! CWM (03/26/2012) You seriously haven't tried it?? ;)

CoZ ROM is:
Updated with the following:
03/26/2012 - CoZ ROM v3.1
Entropy's Daily Driver kernel (02/28/2012)
Init.d governor is ondemand
zipalign init.d script (newly installed apps get zipaligned)
A few other script tweaks
All added applications are updated.
Milocker app added.
Reverted to UCKH7 modem
Made some small changes to the ROM. Added smoothness and resolved the haptic issue. IE: No need to do a "wipe data/factory reset" if you lose haptic feedback upon install.
ICS Launcher has been removed! Sam from MobileTechVideo's pointed out an issue that turned out to be an ICS Launcher issue that has yet to be repaired in the app. Not a big deal, but I'd rather remove it until they fix it. You can always install it from the market if you want it.
This will be my last Gingerbread ROM until official ICS source is released for AT&T. Well, maybe. Depends on my workload at work which recently has been very heavy.
MobileTechVideo's review of CoZ ROM v3 is below. Thank you, Sam!
UPDATED to Android OS 2.3.6
Deodexed and Zipaligned
Rooted (Superuser, and Busybox added)
init.d support
UCKK6 modem
Entropy's Daily Driver kernel (12212011)
Added lidroid's 14 toggle mod in status bar drop down. Edited to give it more of an ICS look. QuickPanel Settings app in your Applications drawer so you can move/remove/add as you please.
Nexus Prime bootanimation
Extended Power Menu
WIFI connectivity should not be an issue thanks largely to Entropy512 for his awesome kernel!
Lock screen issue is resolved, but this was an Android issue to begin with that they resolved since 2.3.4
Apps Removed:
Amazon Kindle
All AT&T apps
Books
Buddies Now
City ID
Days
Genie Widget
Kobo
Mini Diary
Press Reader
Protips
Qik Lite
Terminal Emulator
Words With Friends
Yahoo Finance
YPmobile
Zinio
and all of the HUB apps
Apps added:
Launcher Pro
BetterBatteryStats
CatLog
CPU Spy
Titanium Backup
ICS Launcher
SGS Secret Code app
Vlingo
BLN Control (free)
xda
Zedge
ICS Dialer
ICS contacts
General ICS themed, but not completely (see screenshots)
How to install:
1) Download Zip to your internal sd card
2) Boot into CWM. Go to post# 2 for instructions if needed
3) Highly recommended you go to "Mounts and Storage" and format /data
4) Go to "Install Zip from sdcard" then "choose Zip from sdcard".
5) Navigate to and install the ROM (it will wipe system, cache and davlik for you)
6) First boot can take several minutes
7) IMPORTANT:
When and if restoring data with Titanium Backup ONLY "Restore missing apps with data" and nothing else otherwise you may have issues like missing vibration and/or haptic feedback.

CoZ ROM v3... Still solid, light, simple, dark and stable.
Credit has to be given to the following talented people:
Entropy512 (for his kernel)
lidroid (for his toggle mod and general helpful nature)
gtg465x (for initially helping me with an extended menu issue before I learned how to build it correctly)
h8rift (for answering questions and wiliness to help)
Criskelo (for letting me use his toggle icons for CoZ v1 and v2)
Download Archive:
CWM Package download for CoZ ROM v3.1:
Go here to download: CoZ ROM v3.1
What good is a CWM package if you don't have CWM?
CWM = ClockWork Mod
Note: Your phone needs to be rooted for a non-Odin install. There are many threads in this forum on how to root so I won't get into it here.
Now you need to obtain a kernel that has CWM included. I recommend the latest kernel from Entropy512's thread located here.
You'll want to extract the zImage file out of the Zip and save it on your computer.
If you have the Android SDK installed and working on your computer then save the zImage in its tools directory and then type the following command from this location:
Code:
adb push zImage /sdcard/zImage
Otherwise you'll want to plugin your phone to your computers USB connection and paste the zImage file in the root of your internal SD Card.
Next you need to flash the kernel.
Via ADB (press Enter after each line):
Code:
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Via a Terminal Emulator installed on your phone (If you don't have one download "Android Terminal Emulator" from the Market and install it. It's free):
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Reboot.
Note that in the above two code examples when you type su you'll get a prompt to allow the "Superuser Request" if its the first time you invoke it from either program.
To boot into CWM in ADB type:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Or, unplug your USB cable if plugged in, and press and hold vol UP + vol DOWN + Power buttons. Wait until it reboots and you see the Samsung Galaxy S II boot screen and release all 3 buttons. This should place you in your CWM menu.
Doing it this way should keep you from getting an exclamation point on your boot screen which is the main reason why I explained how to do this in this manner. If, by chance, you still get an exclamation point or already had one to begin with the only option I can think of is to use a jig. Not that a jig isn't a good thing to have anyways. Any ROM you flash from within CWM will not be added to your Custom Image count and will not produce the annoying exclamation point on the boot screen.
Absolutely first thing you want to do is boot into CWM.
As of this writing, press the Home button to choose an entry and press your Power button or the back button to go back to the previous screen.
Go to: backup and restore
Choose Backup
This will take a few minutes, but is well worth it. Now if you ever mess up your install you can always boot into CWM and restore the image you backed up. This, however, doesn't protect you from flashing bad bootloaders so word to the wise... DO NOT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!! At this point and time there is no need to.
looks nice!
Thanks !!!
Good to see another dev joining the S II ranks. I can't wait to give this a go.
Thanks Coz, will try this one out. looks like the perfect theme to match the go launcher glass icons I always seem to come back to using.

Nice man! My only suggestion would be to offer a CWR ZIP to change the font to something more readable.

Update.
Ok, Got the "Activity Market (in app market)not responding.
Force close or wait" a few times when first
starting it, but then seemed to striaghten up after I just waited a couple mins.
Other than that, so far all is working. Talk,Wifi,Bluetooth,GPS,, All Good.
Nice Job my man.
OK awesome. I think it has to sync all your Google info first. Other than that how you like it?

Well with a locked boot loader any "custom" ROM are all going to be about the same. Since we cant overclock, or upgrade past 2.3.3 yet. They are all just tweaked a little differently, like my ROM in comparison to COLA, has only a few minor differences... IT-ROM has the camera mod built in, has toggles built in to the theme, carrier name removed, and a few other cosmetic changes.... the next update will have tweaks built into the build.prop, adds a green dialer theme, and replaces font with stock font. This is my first attempt at playing with roms. It was more of a learning tool for me to get the basics down for removing system app, replacing system app, and what not.

Well you think that but it wont work
Cola has to have /data/ to work
I'm the one who design it so trust me I know.
Once you loose data the rom is broken.

Hey thats awesome info! I was wanting to do something like that but wasnt sure how to make a update.zip, and really didnt want peope to have to reflash the entire ROM again, i know how frustrating it is to have to re-do all your desktops, and widgets, and re-enter al your accounts and sync info.
Would you mind PM'ing me, or post it here, on how to make the symlinks, i am 100% unfamiliar with doing that. (im still learning all of this) Even if it doesnt work with the COLA based ROM, i'd stil like to learn this for future projects, and well, just cause its something I dont know how to do, and I ike to learn.

I know a little bit too, don't worry. You need to keep the Setup Wizard APK which, if absent, breaks the Home button in case of a data wipe. Plus, even if you put a /data folder, it can be empty.
XIT, I think the best that you can do for the symlinks is to grab another ROM (from the Play if possible), unzip it and check its symlinks. I'm not too sure of what symlinks your ROM needs. You can see the symlinks in the update script file in the Meta-Inf folder.

wont work.
locked bootloader cant flash a whole filesystem and datasystem
thats why UK rom has to be flashed as nandroid
1-2 files with the wifimodules work because your just pushing something
but when you try to
format /system
push /system
format /data
push /data
it basicly is going to wipe out CWM recovery in the process because if ur aware the CWM resides in system folder
so yes it wont work for locked bootloader
also I wouldn't keep setup wizard because it is a costly file to keep when it's never needed
the cost is about 1.2 mb not including data if i remember correctly.
so its gone.
when you use nandroid backup you dont need it anyway
I think you're right, I forgot about where the cwm was.

ya i know because i've tried it myself
i created update .zip and the CWM would always return error
i could never get it to work as many times as i tried
I like it, very nice. Plenty of space, apps and drawer loads faster. I implamented the "adb shell, pm setInstallLocation 2, exit". That way I can choose pretty much any app to be moved to sd or installed to sd. Stable rom so far today, no issues.

[ROM][SAMMY-ICS 4.0.3]MJ ROM-version 1.3[XWLP7_XENLP3][16.04.2012]

Greetings!
I have decide long enough and here i am, trying to build my own ROM and share with you guys.
I am still new in creating my ROM, yet i wanna challenge myself and try to have fun with it. To be honest, it is harder than i thought with no complete tutorial out there.
I am planning to start things slowly and learning as i go along. Thus, i start with the basic, modifying stock ROM, and de-odex them. Clear all the bloatware or what i think is not necessary.
Please take note this is just a trial. If you are interested, do try out, and let me know how or where i can improve. I am noob, please don't flame me.
Current Release
MJ ROM: Trial Version 1.3 - 16.04.2012
Firmware: I9100XWLP7
CSC: XENLP3
Kernel: current LATEST Siyah Kernel v3.1rc4 (dual boot supported )
Coming Soon:
add in call recording feature
add in toggle bar - Postpone! Seems like Lidroid method will supercede my translucent status bar.will fine other method to make both thing works.
planning to switch launcher, as i am not too fond with Apex (suggestion please)
create my own logo (might take times, still figuring out)
Beats audio, anyone? (some claim it doens't work, does it? )

Bugs:
Not everything is perfect, though i expected a perfect ROM to ease everyone. However, there are some minor bug i encounter. Not a big deal.
- Keyboard not poping up at the initial setup the ownership of the phone
solution: i realise it takes time for the ROM to load up the keyboard (maybe due to language change from netherland to english - united state issue). what i do is, i just press back and forward few time, and the keyboard will initially pop up. don't worry, it just happen the very first time android setup. no more issues after that.
- Messaging app cannot use
solution: i suspect this is Apex Launcher issues. just delete the dock bar Messaging shortcut. Drag and put the new Messaging app from app drawer and you are good to go.

LP7 it's not AOSP man ! it's SAMMY-based.
by the way, welcome here and good luck in this jungle.
for the beginning, try to post some screenshoot, of course to full root your rom, choose a sympathic theme, put call recording and the new siyah kernel.

thanks man! btw, is it legal to use theme provide here? can i use the mod they provide here? i scare i violate the rules or whatever copyright thingy.
U can use themes, apps and other mods from developers just ask their permission first and credit them in your op.
About supersu, you need to install(push) binary for it to work. Think it's binary is a xbin file, but not sure ask in chainfire thread.
anyways good luck with your project

thanks for your hints and advise. really appreciate it.
edit: i think i found the reason on why my custom ROM is not rooted. it seems like i am using stock ROM unrooted, that's why it is not rooted. base on my research, i just have to flash the stock ROM, root it, flash kernel and old bootloader. back up, and start cooking afterward. correct me if i am wrong.
anyway, gonna try it tomorrow. used almost full day in trial and error, at least i can flash and run my first trial.

Nice tool
Just one comment regarding all AOSP based roms
from Lloir and myself which use the BLADE kernel
You dont need to do this for those roms!
The rom is taking care that the kernel modules are
in the correct location if required using an init.d script
But it will do no harm cause we are "smart" enough do detect it

cool, im guessing you're speaking of modules injector??
i was wondering why we aren't using something like that on the HOX,
im guessing you either have a bigger boot partition or that module's sizes are really small?
worst come to worst... this still have a logging feature which will come in handy...
and for the record, ill update and make it more usable

The modules are included in the boot image in /lib/modules
and synced with /system/lib/modules on boot if required
Using xz compression for the kernel makes it small enough
So e.g. BLADE kernel has about 4.4mb including everything

Help! I'm getting "Invalid Modules" when trying to flash kernel. This is what I did: unzipped boot.img and modules folder from elemental kernel, put those them in the respective folders under one x one click folder, ran the one click exe as administrator (win7), chose the kernel img and modules zip, it seems to run for a second and then the invalid modules and operation terminated. Obviously I'm not doing it correctly with the modules zip process.
