[Q] ISC or JB root - Motorola Droid RAZR

Getting ready to do my very first root on my Razr Maxx XT912.
Currently running 4.0.4
Should I OTA to JB then root, or root from ICS or does it really matter?
Any benefits or downsides to either?
Thanks,
Jeff

You might get more support on XDA if you stay on ICS, esp if the jb OTA just came online. I personally don't think there's all that much benefit, you can always do your prl, profile, update, once you root anyway. But if you want to flash a custom jb ROM, all the ones I've flashed require you to flash a stock one first. Then if that's the case, then yeah, def ota to jb so you have it already when you flag a custom jb.good luck. Read read read before you root!

Well went to JB before root. Then found out they did away with speed dial. I loved speed dial! Anyway everything works out great. Thanks those that replied.

.... lol ....
Ok ok I apologize, I'm just super paranoid and want the ics update to go smoothly but want to retain my root and since no one had had the official ota yet want to make sure it will take and some strange root related file won't spoil my ice cream sandwich dreams, and I've been enjoying rooting and claiming and tweaking since my Eris days apologize for sounding like a noob , I'm just a paranoid veteran

You got. Just don't install a recovery and before you install any ota, temp un root. Then restore root after. Also unfreeze anything before and do not delete any system apps.
Thanks very much, that's what I thought just like to quadrupole check

So should I uninstall Bootstrap?
Yes to uninstall bootstrap. Separate thought; Motofail root method wouldn't create any ota blockers right no extra steps to take if used that method?

Notice!!!! Flashing ics back from jelly bean....

I've noticed while flashing back that it fails on boot but everything else passes... Has anyone else experienced this? Is anyone working on a fix? Or perhaps rooting while on jelly bean? Cause some of us weren't fortunate to keep our root...

You can't flash back, and there is no rooting JB yet.

Motorola If you want to know more, read about CDT aka cdt.bin.
Your razr is xt910 pra xt912?
Its RAZR maxx
If I remember correctly, the issue is the cdt.bin file. It's like the encrypted security file for the bootloader. They updated this file on the .84 ICS leak to start, which is how most people got stuck on it.
This cdt.bin file was updated again with this Jelly Bean leak. Meaning that there will be absolutely no way to go from Jelly Bean back to ICS. Someday we may get JB fastboot files, but you're not getting back to ICS as long as this phone has a locked bootloader.

[Q] Idea to Downgrade From Jelly Bean to ICS

Hey everyone. So I have installed the OTA Jelly Bean update (4.1.2) on my XT912 and I want to go to ICS so I can have root and maybe try OTA RootKeeper. I know it "can't be possible" to downgrade, but there's one idea I have. In ICS, **I created an "update.zip" file. This was basically a backup of all my things... Can I use "update.zip" to downgrade my phone from Jelly Bean to ICS?** Thanks.

Anyone?? I don't need a real answer. At least a prediction.
My prediction is that it won't work due to the locked bootloader hence the kernel will stay jellybean kernel

Yeah that sounds correct. I just need to wait for a root method I guess... thanks. Hurry up with that root method, ppl!

You can keep waiting. Ill see the s4 and s5 before i see an unlocked bootloader for the razr. By which ppl with razrs will move on to another phone

why is this one so large and what i ssafestrap? the ics root i used was only a 7mb download.
Safestrap is for making a recovery backup, and flashing etc. its like a multi tool you can also flash roms with it.
That's always been the size?

Yeah use the one the other guy gave you, its large because it has allot of things you need, such as flash factory files, root, install ota keeper, and safestrap which lets you install roms. Its a really good utility, and its the only way you can get root on JB.

Help updating rooted Gingerbread 2.3.5 to JB!

My friend asked me to help him with his RAZR MAXX and I'm trying to get him to CM 10.2 or on Jellybean anyway. It is running rooted stock Moto Blur on Gingerbread 2.3.5. The OTA update fails, my guess is because of the root, but I was able to put safestrap 1.0 on it but I can't update it to CM 10 because it needs safestrap 3. I have had no luck in finding an unroot method, any suggestions?

Flash a stock jelly bean ROM using rsd lite, then re-root.
Thanks, I'll give it a try next time I see him and let you know how it went.
