I have a problem with my GPS. Since 4.2.2 (on different roms that I've tried) it takes a long time to get a fix. On earlier roms this wasn't a problem and I would get a fix in seconds. I use the app faster GPS to write the appropriate .conf. I read about someone else having the same problem. Is there a way to fix this? Maybe flashing another modem? If so what modem would be recommended for The Netherlands?
Would love some help with this

I'm facing the same problem too and I'm using what you're using too.
Gps on previous xylon was amazing but somehow it got real bad on this build.

Do you use the correct time server configuration?
I mean did you install faster fix, and change the ntp server to your country's ntp?

Maybe, you can try installing GPS Status & Toolbox, it helped me many times...

Good suggestion. Not only that, @OP try the following:-
Once you've installed GPS Status, go outside to a place that has clear line of sight in as many directions as possible. Turn data & GPS on. Open GPS Status & go into tools/manage AGPS state. Hit reset to clear the data, then hit download to allow it to download fresh ephemeris data. Then turn data off & allow it to 'learn' where the satellites are based on that ephemeris data (could take up to 10 minutes the first time).
Once you've got a good fix with plenty of satellites, you're done. You should then get a fix fairly quickly (it will be lightning quick if you have data or wifi on) for a minimum of a couple of days (and potentially up to two weeks). Once getting a fix becomes unbearably slow, repeat this process (Worth it if GPS is something you use a lot).
This is something that has always worked for me.

I flashed another 4.2.2 ROM (Mysterious ROM) and the problem is gone. I get a fix pretty fast and it stays fixed whenever I use it for traveling. I still use Faster GPS to write the appropriate .conf file.

Hello,
I have a SG Ace with the CyanoGenMod 7.1 installed.
The GPS only gives the position sometimes. I have tried GMaps, Navigation, GPS test plus and GPS status and none of them work properly.
Actually, only Navigation has worked twice and when it does, the rest of apps work too (just for a limited time).
It takes ages to work and the problem is not finding the satellites since I detect (with GPS status and GPS test plus) 6 to 10 of them. It seems like it can't process the data and calculate the coordinates.
Any idea of what could be the problem? Have you heard of same problem in others SGA with CGM7? Any solution?
Thank you very much!
PD: I haven't tried the GPS with stock rom but since it has work twice with CGM7.1 and detects the satellites I think we can discard that the GPS is broken. It is more like bad configuration.
EDIT: when I download the A-GPS info I NEVER get a satellite. This maybe a symptom of something.

Now we have a problem. I have tried almost every trick and nothing worked. I can't believe we are the only people having this trouble, there must be someone else.
Does anyone know how the GPS works? What is the algorithm? We should be able to find where the problem is located.
My GPS can find the satellites (from 6 to 10) even inside of buildings (2-5) and have worked twice, only twice but it went okay. Usually, it doesn't give me the coordinates, as I said, this only happened twice.
I think the error could be related to the next step, once it has located the satellites, what does it have to do? Synchronise with the ntp servers?
Also we can try a personalized gps.conf config file because the others below haven't worked.
I hope someone understand the GPS process better than we do and can help us.
Thank you all.
I provided 2 sets of gps.conf and secgps.conf and both also didn't work for you?
My problem is similar.I can't get any satellites until I reboot.even after reboot, it doesn't lock even after having more than 10 satellites.I have to restart the GPS status a few times before it locks

Tried the second set of conf files and left my phone outside for about 20 mins and finally got a lock but only about 80 feet accurate.
Thanks for the tutorial.
Not sure if you have the latest modem/radio. Flashing the latest might help if that's the case.

Finally getting very quick fix times (inside the house) by following instructions in this thread:

I think using Assisted GPS was the key though.
With assisted GPS, it is expected to have much faster lock

I have tried almost every gps.conf in the forum and I haven't fixed the Ace yet.
However, I discovered two things:
1) If you reboot the phone with the "GPS Active" option ticked and reset the AGPS data (with GPS-Status) you always get locked.
2) When you get locked as I said in 1), it always refresh the coordinates once per 30 seconds (a normal GPS do it in once per second, checked with a stock galaxy s2).
The 30 seconds refreshing is very suspicious, like a wrong value in a configuration parameter. Any idea?
I think the problem is in the cyanogen, remember this is a ported mod from galaxy s to galaxy ace so it was not originally programmed for this phone.
Good information, I suspect it's due to cyanogen too. Can't wait for the official cyanogen. I hope it will fix the GPS issue. It's annoying sometimes....

After trying all the possibilities:
- Installing stock (gps-ok) and restoring my cm7 backup NOT WORKING*
- Installing stock and cm7 from new NOT WORKING
- Installing different stocks versions WORKING*
- Installing mods (gingerreal....) WORKING
- Trying almost every fix with cm7 (gps.conf, fasterfix-apps...) NOT WORKING
After all, the GPS HAS NOT WORKED EVER* with cyanogen mod 7.1 RC1 in galaxy ace.
So I just got back to stock, rooted and reinstalled apps, configs, etc.
I have something to say: if GPS doesn't work to anybody with CGM7.1, this MUST BE in the specification rom page because for many people (like me) the GPS related apps represent a high percentage of use. People should be warned about this issue in order to install or not the rom.
Thank you all, you have been very helpful, as always in this forum.
(*) normal working means <20s to lock, refreshing every second, even when you turn the gps off and on again...
I use GPS extensively too

My GPS won't work when the phone is connected to wifi. When I switch off wifi and restart a GPS related app it works.
I also use a program called 'GPS status plus' and in its settings I select 'delete agps data' then 'refresh GPS data'. That fixes the occassional problem I have with GPS not locking. So long as wifi is off.

Thanks for the lengthy and detailed explanation of the circumstances, things you've done and brightness levels of your phone screen. Oh wait, you supplied less information that the Gestapo at Auschwitz. Try wiping your phone and reinstalling everything, making sure you do it in the right order. Alternatively, download the apps from the marketplace. And if you can't get them working after hours of head scratching and problem solving THEN make a post telling us what you've done and we can try to help.

Hi
I have a very annoying GPS problem - I have several colleagues with sgs3, and when I run the 'gps test' application I notice that my GPS isn't as good - it's quite bad comparde to their GPS.
My GPS takes more time to find my location, and it always 'sees' fewer satellites than my friends' devices. Their gps sees between 10-15 satellites, mine sees 8 at best.
I tried several ROMs (omega 13, omega 26, wanam 2.3) and nothing helped - my friends had wanam 2.3 and omega 13...
I'm really frustrated by this problem, anyone got a suggestion?
Thanks

Thanks @JJEgan, I tried it, flashing didn't work so I manually copied the files, I'll try this on the way back home.
However, I understood what is my main problem - when using GPS TEST app I notice that I simply don't get ANY glonass satellite, though the process 'broadcommemsservice' is running...
How come everybody else (3 sgs3 and 1 note) are using glonass and only I can't? is it another piece of hardware? or a software issue?
Thanks
I had the same problem with Omega Rom. Flashing Stock or Checkrom solves the problem.

Really??
I tried other roms and it didn't fix the problem... i'll try to roms you suggested.
it still doesn't explain why my 2 friends have the same roms i tried (i've installed it to them) and they don't have the problem)
but i'll try it,
Thanks
If rooted
System/etc/GPS.config
Compare with friends
If different copy theirs and replace your one. Backup you old one
Don't forget to fix permissions
I tried everything...
I installed Checkrom 5.5 and i applied @JJEgan suggestions which overwrited gps.conf, and fixed permissions afterwards.
my gps still sucks. i saw 1 glonass satellite for a split second, and then it was gone. i still get only 6-8 satellites while my friends get 12.
DAMN!
I've tested it again against my girlfriend's sgs3.
the signal reception strength is a bit lower for every satellite we both receive.
i guess it is a hardware malfunction...
Something similar happened to me. I bought the phone and the GPS locked in under 10 seconds indoors!!! Coming from a Galaxy S, I was blown out of my mind.
Then, I flashed a BTU ROM (which is not where I am) and GPS couldn't find any satellites. Now, I'd forgotten my CSC so I changed it to KOR (close enough, meh) and now it finds satellites although it still takes time. If you want to avoid the whole rooting mess, change your CSC to the right one (be careful to make a backup as changing CSC deletes all data).
Hey Guys,
Loving my galaxy s3 however something strange is now happening. I used to live in Brisbane and recently moved to Sydney, whilst I was in Brisbane I often used the GPS and google maps navigation (google navigation whatever you want to call it ) and it performed amazing! it locked onto location instantly and would guide me and track my position superbly.
Now I've been in Sydney for 3 days, and I tried to use the navigation several times and it was terrible! It would take a minute or two to lock onto my position but would still be fairly innacurate and would not engage the navigation, just sat in that screen where it is zoomed out and roughly shows the route to take, sometimes it would engage into the navigation but then would stop tracking me and just say it lost GPS location.
Has anyone experienced this problem? or know what I can do to fix it!! Thanks
Couple of suggestions:
Have you changed your Google location? Whenever I've changed ROM's I get asked to let Google use my location - maybe there is something in the Google set up that still thinks you are in Brisbane and has to keep scanning for your new location?
Have you got the map for Sydney - I know you can get maps on your phone but maybe only your home location is auto-downloaded, so you get a zoomed out version for other places? Maybe go into the Maps app and select Sydney and see if it brings down a more detailed version?
Maybe check for Maps/Navigation updates? I got a Maps one a few days back.
I hope this helps - not sure at all if any of them are applicable but it is what I'd be checking...
For the google location, I sort of reset it, I turned it off (the option to let google use your location) and turned it back on. Not sure what else you can do in that department.
Ive got the map for sydney and my maps and navigation are up to date! Thanks for the suggestions but, its just really frustrating as it used to work so well
Use either GPS test or GPS status to see how well your GPS is working. Both are available free in market. They will also download agps data to help with a faster fix.
Check that you do have satellites switched on in settings.
If you are rooted you could try the wildfire agps patch. I think it is posted in the development thread.

I can't really help but my s3 in sydney has almost instant lock, except when in a tunnel.
By a strange quirk of fate I have just experienced the same issue that you faced.
After a lot of frustration I found a simple fix.
Turn off GPS and other location settings in main settings, power of and reboot. Switch everything back on in settings and all should be well again.
Hope this, belatedly, helps.

If you are on a custom ROM then the first line of the GPS.conf file in system/etc will be set to "north-america.pool.ntp.org". Change the "north-america" part to "au" and restart. Then reset/redownload gaps data.using GPS status. Hope this helps.
Hi, I'm writing you now because I feel desesparated.
I've searched many forums included this but I can't solve my GPS Signal Issue. My phone won't get any gps signal from Waze, CoPilot, Google Nav... I've tried to fix the GPS with "Faster Fix" (I've chosen the right country) and even "GPS Status" and "GPS Fix" but none of them solved the problem.
I remember the GPS to be working before but it may be related to my rom or modem.
I'm running my Galaxy S2 with the latest NEATROM 4.9 with the Philz Kernel that comes with it. (Gps doesn't work with Neatrom 4.8 as well)
I really need help, I hope its not a hardware problem! Perhaps I have to flash another modem?
Thanks a lot :crying:
I don't think modem and gps are related mate. Try flashing a stock rom first.

Try this thread. But yeah, back to stock to test as Neo said. Correct, modem has nothing to do with GPS beyond the obvious - if you're using A-GPS then having good mobile network connectivity will enable you to get a faster/more accurate fix (particularly in situations where non-assisted GPS won't work well - inner city with lots of tall buildings/poor line of sight to satellites). Changing modems won't help you get a better fix with 'ordinary'/non-network assisted GPS.
Edit - Also, the following has always solved any (minor in my case, I've never had major dramas with GPS) problems I've ever had:
If you don't already have GPS Status, get it from Google Play. Go outside to a place that has good line of sight in all directions. Turn mobile data & GPS on & fire up GPS Status. Go into tools/manage A-GPS state & reset A-GPS XTRA Data. Then go back into the same setting & download new ephemeris data (which is essentially tables of satellite positions/where they'll be & when), then close GPS Status. Turn off mobile data & put the phone into flight mode (leave GPS on), then fire up GPS Status again. Wait for as long as it takes (normally not more than 5 minutes) for it to get a good/accurate fix (down to a few mtrs/with plenty of satellites). This has always enabled me to get accurate/fast fixes for anything up to a couple of weeks until the ephemeris data gets old, in which case you repeat the process as required.

I quite don't understand the steps in the thread you gave me, the explainations aren't clear. I don't even find the gps.conf file in my sd card...
The tip you gave doesn't work as well.
I'm going to opt out for a stock rom, but I remember my gps to be working on a custom rom.
I'll try to reply as fast as I can with the stock rom tested
I don't think I'm going to install a Stock rom, I've tried the GPS with the latest Resurrection Remix rom and it locks a satellite in 5 minutes' time.
So I know that the problem is not hardware related and no need to try a stock rom. The issue is to be found in the way my gps in configurated. It takes too much time to lock my position.
I may go back to Neatrom 4.9 and try to solve the issue from it
