Uneven Backlight? - Nexus 10 General

I read through much of the threads regarding the N10 display. The light bleed on mine is there, but it doesn't bother me.
What I do notice especially on a white background is the top (landscape) of the screen seems to be slightly darker along the entire top edge. This seems to extend down about 1/2 and inch. It is especially noticeable with the kindle app when the screen brightness is high.
Anyone else notice this or are my eye just getting old?
I do a lot of reading on my tablet so the sharper display (replacing a Xoom) is certainly a big plus. The dark band is more of a distraction when reading especially when I'm thinking about it while reading!

I think that is only present on stock ROM, I had noticed it when I first got my tablet but been on AOSPA for months and haven't seen it since I left stock.

I have this too and I suspect a lot if not all do too. There was a big thread on this a while back.

Are you guys aware that there is a gradient shading that is naturally there? It is most noticeable on the initial setup screen, it gets gradually darker. Download the light bleed app and go through the solid colors to test for consistency of the backlight.

[Q] Odd display issue when viewing black backgrounds in dark surroundings

Hello XDA,
I've searched around for this problem a bit, and it seems this issue hasn't been brought up anywhere. If it has, then I apologize.
The S2 has an awesome display with great colors, blacks included, but I noticed this issue one night when I was watching a film on my S2. When the display is showing black/dark images you can clearly see what appears to be glue smudges all over the screen, especially along the rims. It is only noticeable when there's little to no other light in the surrounding environement. Increasing brightness seem to worsen the problem.
It is hard to describe and very difficult to capture on camera but I made an attempt. I can't post links yet it seems but here's an imageshack url:
img842.imageshack.us/img842/5420/blotches.jpg
The image was taken with a Canon 450D with 20 sec exposure (hard to focus when it's that dark I'll tell you). Edited slightly in photoshop to cut down the size.
Here you can see the general color of the screen (gray-ish) and some of the blotches of (what I'm guessing is) glue in the back. If I had to guess I suspect the blotches might come from the capacitive touch layer of the screen. Is this an issue or is it to be expected on phones like these? It's not a major problem but it's actually quite annoying when you're watching a film/youtube clip/playing a generally dark game or whatever. Should I return my device? I've used it for just about a week and a half.
Thanks in advance for any help.
i have this too, its the AMOLED display. you can turn the screen off and on and you'll see it go off n on. not the sgs, but amoleds generally. my omnia HD had this too (1st gen AMOLED)
the blacks are not 100% black i say
Im having this too, nothing to worry about this as it doesnt disturb the beautiful display of this mobile.

[Q] Heavy banding appears and Disappears when rotating screen

anytime I rotate my s2 in the notifications area I see a faint line that appears on the sides of the screen (usually 2 lines, one on each end, running parallel in respect to the orientation of the screen), which disappears slowly after a couple of seconds. is this a fault? or normal with these AMOLED displays?
mine does this too, as well as many other sgs2's. It's more of a ghosting effect rather than banding. I say it's normal and just a drawback of the super amoled displays.

so, pretty much all s2s are affected because of the super amoled plus displays right?

I'm not an expert but going by personal experience I would say yes. Although I have only noticed it happen when the brightness is low. Personally it doesn't bother me much.
i agree, it only at low brightness you see it along with yellow tint on left, predominantly on lower left (right-triangle shape)
this has to be software related
does anyone else have an explanation for the banding that appears and disappears?

[Q] White Glow on Dark Screen

I just got my refurbed Tab yesterday. I've owned many tablets over the last year, but I've never experienced a soft kind of glowing effect on dark parts of the screen (like in a dark scene in a video, or even the bottom control bar) when viewed at any angle at all. The image almost becomes difficult to see unless you're looking straight ahead. I only notice this when there's little to no ambient light in the room (which is when 90% of my tablet usage is- reading or watching a movie in bed).
I compared with my touchpad in the same scenario and while there was a *very* slight glow, it wasn't nearly as bad as on the gt 10.1.
I found next to nothing on Google about this. Does anyone else get this, or do I possibly have a bad refurb? It's a shame because I'm completely in love with it otherwise...

Is it coming from the sides? If so, it's LCD screen bleed. It unfortunately happens with backlit LCD panels. It doesn't appear to be too common with the Tab as I haven't seen it mentioned before. I'd send it in for repair while it's under warranty. They changed the screen design in October and you'll get it back with a better display then it has currently.

No, it's not from the sides. There's no bleeding. It's on the screen itself. It's almost like kind of a ghostly white glow on top of the dark colors on the screen. A shimmering effect, maybe? I'm not sure how else to describe it.

if possbile post the screenshot.
Hm. I guess i'm not explaining it well.
While it is on the screen itself, it's only when you tilt the device to the viewing angle isn't straight on.
Here's a thread from a different forum discussing it:

There are also youtube videos showing it, like this one:

I just compared my G-Tab with an ASUS Transformer, and it was still there on the Transformer, but not as bad as the G-Tab.

Backlight bleeding on the screen

I'm deciding between a tf201 or a samung tab 7.7 but I've been reading a lot of reports that users are getting backlight bleeding and others are not.. what is the actual stand on this, is the backlight bleeding normal or just common?
People defend it by saying that even the ipad2 has bleeding, I've checked 3 ipad2's from relatives and none if it had any backlight bleeding including a single ipad1 and 2 iphone4's.
For TN based displays I understand its normal for it to have bleeding.
As an ex-Asus fanboy, there definitely is a light bleed issue. Most prominently around the right and bottom sides of the tablet. IF you look around at the forums about light bleed issues, you'll notice that people who have had the issue say "I'm not on my 4th prime" or something similar. It's an issue with shotty quality control.
I bought a prime and had a light bleed issue. Majority of that light bleed could only be seen when the screen was black. However, it is very significant light bleed. Other tablets or IPS devices that have light bleed are similar, but just not as pronounced. Asus really redefined light bleed
I traded in my first Asus Prime and received a second one (BC) from the same store. It had light bleed in almost the exact same location, and in some cases worse. None the less, I took that back and just kept my money. Hopefully a galaxy tab 2 or Iconia A700 or TF700 or IPAD 3 will serve me better for the $500 I spent.
Bottom line -- if you're going for a prime, you're most likely going to get light bleed (chances are slim you won't). And after spending a week with it, it gradually got worse.
I might try to buy one again at the end of February to see if they improved the quality.

I dont need it now but I want it now... so with the S-IPS panel specification there should be no backlight bleeding correct?

Of course there "SHOULD" not be any backlight bleeding. No manufacturer wants to produce a display with light bleeding from the sides.
The reality is that most Primes suffer from this and it is up to the user to live with it or not. The one I had did have some bright spots along the lower edge of the screen and I would have put up with it had it not been for the constant reboots.
For me its not gonna be acceptable considering the price and the touted S-IPS since I've never personally seen one with backlight bleeding. I guess I have to wait it out.

Utility of a device is always a matter of perspective. Some people look past it mostly because they want it so bad. I teased myself with it for about 7 days and finally made a decision that it could wait (mostly because the backlight bleed became worse!)

Exactly. The question is, would have anyone noticed if they were not looking for it? It's a psychological question I often ponder. I almost forgot about my backlight bleed because I really didn't experience it during normal lighting conditions and apps/background not highlighting the bleeding. The tablet also is fricking amazing from head to toe with regards to functionality, ease of use, and performance.
However, its a shame as the backlight is turned up all the way when you first start the tablet. Since the startup screen uses a complete black backdrop the first experience a brand new Prime user will have (and yes you WILL have it) will be light bleed.
I will watch a lot of movies on in and for sure a dark scene cant be avoided and I even use an all black background or a black and white picture so its gonna be noticeable on my regular use including the fact that 85% of my usage will be in the bedroom with lights off.
I've had my prime for about 10 days. It's got what I would consider minor light bleed. When I first turn it on and it's going through the boot screens, there's noticeable bleed in the top right corner and along the bottom in several spots. However, when the homescreen comes up (even with a dark background - i.e. the ASUS live wallpaper at night), I can barely notice any bleeding at all.
So, I guess my point is, if you're using it with the lights off, your screen brightness will be at its lowest setting and hence light bleed should be barely noticeable if at all.
Meh still! 100 times better than my old windows 7 laptop. I look forward to using the tablet vs my desktop or laptop because the screen is so beautiful. I still think many of you like me are tech junkies and will buy the next greatest thing when it comes out...

Keep in mind that the ICS setup screens are NOT totally black. They are black at the top and then lighter towards the bottom. I've had many people mistake this for light bleed

I'm awre of that, I'm gonna use a totally black png image to check for lightbleeding if ever I decide to get one.
First two primes I owned, returned due to stuck pixels are HORRIBLE light bleed. 3rd one barely any bleed (slight amount in upper right hand corner, BCOK serial number. 4th and 5th prime, C10K serial numbers, zero light bleed. Very happy with them.
(reason for 3, one for me, my wife and bought one for my brother in law for his birthday).
So you have a C1 and no light bleed?
Light Bleed getting worse
Has anyone seen their light bleed becoming worse as time goes by? My Prime came and there was only a slight light bleed in the lower left corner and was only noticeable during boot. I have now had the Prime for 3 weeks and the Light bleed has gotten worse. I now have light bleed up the left side, across the bottom and up the right side. Is anyone else seeing this with their Primes?
Others also reported that its getting worse.
Mine has bleed, but the only time I ever notice is when it's booting. They all have some form. iPads have them also. Mine did.... it's the nature of IPS, apparently.
Enjoy your TF201, stop staring at a plain black screen.
Mine has just a bit of bleed along the bottom, not really noticeable and nowhere as bad as our TV. The top-right corner however, on the bootup screen and any solid black (does not show up in any other color ) has pretty bad bleed. I'm pretty sure this is down to only having pressure in the four places this screen does.
If I push the panel's corner in toward the glass in that spot the bleed disappears, and no amount of tightening on the nearest screw will help.
I have not noticed mine get worse in the two weeks I've had it, but I reseated all the screws and made sure they were snug...
I don't know... I've had mine for a week and I don't have any light bleed. None that I can notice at least..
SN: C10
The backlight bleed 'issue' is either hit or miss. I had a B1 grey for a couple of weeks before my C1 Champagne pre-order finally came in and the B1 had no backlight bleeding what-so-ever. My C1 has a small amount light bleed along the right side, which from the sounds of it is fairly common on the C1s.
In my opinion the backlight 'issue' is not that big of a deal. In my normal daily use it is something I don't notice at all. As others have mentioned if you do get one with light bleeding the only time you really notice it is on the boot screen.

Does mine has the bleeding or the regular IPS blue tint?? (pohotos attached)

Guys I need some help here! Here are the photos my tab's screen, I hardly can get the better ones.
As far as you can see, does it have the bleeding issues or those are only blueish IPS tints there?
Really appreciate any input!

I cannot see due to the reflection. Take a picture in the dark. The blacks aren't black on the nexus 10. And its not a IPS screen it is PLS display.
My advice is to not hunt for defects and just enjoy your device.
Yeah you're right, but I am not in US and have not received it yet to enjoy, unfortunately, and if I will forward this there will be no going back with warranty etc) Also can't get the clearer images, that is why I decided to kindly ask someone who has the device in hand to determine the situation I am in.
If you want to know it has light bleed, ask the person that has it right now to take a picture of it with a black wallpaper in a completely dark room.
download light bleed app from play store, take snap shot of the screen, post here.
I never noticed anything until I actually tried this "light bleed" test, but I noticed there is a YouTube video for testing light bleed and that was much less noticible, if at all, compared to the app on the play store..
Moral of the story is: When actually using the device, light bleed has made ZERO difference for me - Nexus 10 is great so far
EVERY LCD Screen has light-bleeding, but you don't always see it.
If you see it in daily use - you may have a problem.
If you don't see it in daily use - where's the problem?
People crank the backlight all the way up and then take pictures in a pitch dark room...but that doesn't represent the practical use.
When booting the N10, the backlight is set to maximum. Wait till it adjusts itself and then look for light bleeding.

I wonder if Samsung /Google fixed the issue? I i saw pics from people who received their n10 on the initial launch week and could easily see light bleed in all the pics posted. i remember comparing them to my own tf700, and wifes ipad3 at the time and saw the n10 bleed pics to all be worse than my tf700 which had a little bleed in 2 of the corners and no bleed on my wifes ipad. i received my n10 this week after having it pre-ordered thru staples and just checked it using one of the bleed checking apps and it looks great at full brightness.. better than my tf700, looks equal to my wife ipad 3, with maybe one tiny spot that was only visible at 100 % brightness.
It's almost impossible to take adequate pictures of backlight bleeding. Just like with clouding or banding on TVs. You just can't take them as a comparison.
Search for iPad backlight bleeding in Google and there you have it...
