hey there!
next week I'll buy a new phone, and I think that it's going to be a Nokia Lumia 800...
so I have some general questions about this phone:
is it a good phone, worth buying?
is it lagg free?
are there custom ROMS?
are there bugs on the stock ROM?
can i run android on it?
can i play pokémon on it?(eventualy with an emulator?)
are there a lot developpers for the nokia lumia 800?
can it play music loud?
is the windows app store big? (less, even,or bigger than the android play store?)
(i googled some questions, but the xda-developpers are the most trustable ppl for questions like these)
thanx anyway
is it a good phone, worth buying?
It's everyone's own opinion, but for me, defenitly YES.
is it lagg free?
Ähm... well, yes, WP7 is a very smooth running OS with little hardware requirements. With new 7.8 version, there are sometimes some lags in scrolling, but not really often, and not annoying.
are there custom ROMS?
Yes, But you need to modify your phone to qualcomm bootloader, before you can do this.
are there bugs on the stock ROM?
i didn't realy recognize any, but there might be some. Same with every os
can i run android on it?
No. What for?
can i play pokémon on it?(eventualy with an emulator?)
haha, yes threre's a gbc emulator called "purple cherry", works great
are there a lot developpers for the nokia lumia 800?
many? hm... no, not many too many for wp7 in general, but definitly good ones
can it play music loud?
Yes, with custom rom with removed "volume limit"
is the windows app store big? (less, even,or bigger than the android play store?
way less than android store, but what for? you need quality, not quantity.
There's nothing i'm really missing. so...
I'm happy with my Lumia 800 and it's worth buying. When I unlocked bootloader I won't leave my phone ^_^
There's everything I need and want.
Are there any lags? Of course not. Last time I've experienced a lag (there were 2, maybe 3) was on WP 7.5, but now with 7.8 I almost forgot what lag is ^_^
i'll buy one!
ok, thanks for the (very fast!) answers!
you guys convinced me to buy one!!
thank you so much guys
You're welcome. surely you won't be disappointed, I would never change WP for android.
If you have any questions - ask boldly
update
well, i'm randomly thinking of another question: what is the difference between WP 7.5 and 7.8? and how can we upgrade the luma800 to 7.8?

It's pretty simply. What you need is just to plug your phone on USB to PC and run Zune
Between 7.5 and 7.8 the biggest difference are tiles. On 7.5 you had only two sizes, medium and big and couldn't change their size but now, on 7.8, you can easily make your tile small, medium or big.
In 7.8 there are 20 accents to change colors your tiles and everything to this one you like or your mood is.
Also, in 7.8 there is Bluetooth sharing (which is not avaiable on other phones with 7.8 - it's just for Nokia only but other phones can bypass it ^_^) and Ringtone maker - from Nokia too.
They added Google as a default search (before there were only Bing and Yahoo).
That's the major changes.
thanks
well okay then, again, thank you very very much

hi, just wanted to ask for opinions if changing to another OS, mozarts wp7, would be an upgrade from xperia x10.
anyone with wp7 i need help.
did you regret that you changed OS?? from android to wp7?
or is it a much better choice?
things to consider if i change to wp7:
1. applications.. i dont have an idea about the line up of apps for wp7
will it be as many and as fun as android apps?
2. battery life
3. smoothness of web browsing and overall interface.
THANKS
also:
are there also a lot of good free apps on the market??
or are there sites where we can download apps for free like in the android devices??
it would be of much help for me in deciding if i should switch to wp7
with your comments guys. thank you
WP7 (and now WP 7.5) is just amazing, more integrated and easy to use than other platoforms. Microsoft got in the game a few years later and that was not only a bad thing.. They could see all the disadvantages with iOS and Android before developing their new platform. WP7 is the most beautiful UI out there..
1. Applications are great but all essential ones are not yet released (like Skype, Spotify, etc). These are due to be released this fall though and more and the market place is growing very fast. The next six months will be very exciting.
2. Battery life is suprisingly good. Playing games, however, drains it quickly.
3. It is the smoothest experience out there.. Android is far behind..
If you like HTC, I would go for the Titan or Radar, though. They are the latest generation WP phones with a front facing camera..
Totally agree with the above post...I have tried many OSes, and I think WP7 is by far the best for me. Simplicity is the best factor, the apps may cost a little more (angry birds, for example) but at least I can try them all without paying for them.
A good site to search for apps is the wp7applist (here)
Mango 7.5 is certainly a big improvement on the earlier version.
Thank you for your quick responses friends . What about gba emulator? Do we also have gba emulator for wp7?
Is.the mozart a good phone?
Smoothness of.the ui.is.whats most important

All WP7 phone has an extremely smooth UI. MUCH smoother than Andoird. WP7 does not have the same problems as Android there.. You can buy any WP7 phone with confidence.

one more thing.
is mango officially out for mozart ??
Yes. The official Mango can be downloaded from the Development Forum. The public release through Zune should come this or next week (if you dont want to re-flash the phone yourself, even though it is really easy).
bought the phone an hour ago..
if i wait for the official mango release from zune..
will it wipe the files in my phone now??
Congratulations!! A backup will be automatically performed by Zune before the phone is updated to Mango. Then all data will be restored afterwards, so you can feel safe.
Hoping it will be out officially soon thanks for helping me find and avail this great and sexy phone..
Hmmm one more thing . Is it also possible to install apps from 4shared? I mean can I install apps .payable apps and then download it for free from some other site ?

App are extremely cheap so I would recommend supporting the developers out there..
Just waiting for mango now

Congratulations, it is really a sexy phone, i plan to keep it with me for a long period.
I also recommend supporting the developers
I advise you not to flash any hacked ROM, only the official ones.
You can try the Official HTC leaked ROM, it is very stable but you will lose your data.
If I wait for the official release will it not wipe my data now?
As mentioned earlier: It will preserve your data..
Thanks sir. I'm psyched about the mango update hop it comes really really soon

Mango is only a week or two away now, unless you live in Taiwan and some other parts of Asia - where they have it already.
AT&T will start to role Mango out on the 27th Sept -

Guys, I've got a question
I recently bought a SonyEricsson Xperia Neo V and I'm within the 10 days for return (this friday the period ends) and I've been seriously considering changing it for a Nokia Lumia 710.
Which one is better? Keep in mind I have to keep the phone for 18 months for contractual reasons. I've read reviews on the internet that say music quality sucks..and I've tested it at the store and that's true, but I rarely (if ever) listen to music on my cellphone, as I have an iPod nano for that.
What I'm concerned with is Call quality. I've read complaints about it and... have nokia fixed it? Is it true that the voice sounds muffled on the other side?
Finally...is it possible for that phone to have apps installed outside the Windows Phone Marketplace? I used android and I know that it gets slugish with time, but one of it's advantages is that I can install APKs outside of the google play store.
Anyway, thanks for your time.
You can break WP7. More or less easily but it is possible. Then you can "deploy" apps from outside Marketplace. Just look in the dev forum.
There's dev unlock, interop unlock and full unlock. You interested in the last two .
go for lumia 710...windows phone are way smooth to use and interactive in my personal opinion..!!!!

Keep in mind that Windows Phone 8 will bring fundamental changes to Windows Phone. Although most developers will target as much devices as possible there will be major limitations. For instance will SQLite only be supported on WP8. If you don't need to live on the cutting edge of technology you can go with Windows Phone. However if you want upgradability and a richer Homebrew community you should go with Android. Android is way more open than Windows Phone.

After my disastrous experience trying to update Android 2.1 to 2.3 on a Xperia X8 device (the damn thing got slooooooowwwwww), I think I wouldn't care much about updates. In fact, If I stay with this device (the Neo V) I'd update to ICS 4.0.4, remove the bloatware and stay there, because I don't think the phone would support Jelly Bean or another ulterior android version.
If any of you is a current Lumia 710 user, has Nokia fixed the lack of bass for the audio?
How's call audio quality? Nobody has answered me those 2 questions, which I find rather important.

Keep in mind that lots of people bough expensive Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. Developers won't just drop WP7 support in WP8's favour. That would not pay off and would be irresponsible. They have to update their apps for WP7 as long as WP8 doesn't reach that point in stats, where it stands higher.
So, don't worry about "no update to WP8" and "you'll only get new start screen". You can safely enjoy your smooth mobile OS for a couple of years.
The same actually applies to older Android, but you have to agree that using anything else than ICS (now JB) makes jealous. Older releases were just ugly.
Ok, enough offtopic, you get the point.
Hi,
i am interested in buying an Lumia 800 but i do not have any knowledge or experience with windows phone. I just want to try this system and the Nokia devices have a very good navigation software and a good camera. How big is the chance that a WP8 Rom will come to the Lumia 800?
Normally i use a Galaxy S3 and just want to buy a second device to play around and test somthing new. So please excuse my noob question. The L800 will cost around 200€ without a contract and i think its a nice alternative to my Samsung.
thanks a lot
lumia
its not going to happen the most you will get is wp 7.8 only the new line of lumias will have w8
if i were you buy the 820 or 920
rob:good:
I would like to buy them but they are too expensive just for testing and playing around. Is it impossible because of the hardware specifications or that there will be no WP8 Source Code available which can be customized with drivers etc. ?
Not possible mate..though u can have a word around here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1966327
with the devs
Hi,
Even if someone ports a WP8 for a current WP7 device he/she would have to disable all the specific WP8 functionalities which requires higher hardware specification (Dual core CPU and all) so it would be kind of a 7.8 with very marginal improvements.
So I dont think there would be much of a gain in trying to port in WP8 to 800
just my 2 cents and I can be completely wrong
Hee!,
I am an engeneering student and I do not think it is already fair to say porting WP8 will be posible, or not. It is true that the hardware of our current Windows Phone device doesnt reach the Microsoft hardware minimum for windows 8 device. Although this is their minimum, wich not only concludes the ´needings of the system´ but also ´marketings minimums´, for example: who would upgrade to a WP8 device if it is slower?
So not having the minimum hardware requirment doesnt really mean it is imposible to run WP8. Although it requirs a lot of porting and I am not sure if somebody will succees doing it.
Also one last point to mention, as you can find on the forum you can not update all Lumia 800 devices, depends on your bootloader, wich you cant know when you buy it on Ebay.
Does anybody know when Lumia 800 will get an official WP7.8 update? And will it be available in Europe?
they say , in the mittle of December...

Lumia phones are mostly phones as some testing tweaking devices. So i'm wondering, what you expect, as long as 800 is flashable only with qualcomm bootloader. New ones have only Dload, which is not hacked yet. Lumias are not like androids - completly different ROMs, patches, flashable apps,... Lumias are great, fast, reliable phones. Not for messing around.
i think you will try lumia920 or lumia820/822,lumia800 only have wp7.8

Well I haven't heard anything about it so far. All we can have right now for our Lumias are custom roms with a few tweaks, however you'll be able to flash those only if you have the qualcomm bootloader, and this is mostly luck based, because it depends on the hardware revision of your specific device. Speaking of Android ports instead I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you...

Well it mostly depends on which particular apps you need...but in terms of games you'll probably be disappointed, don't expect to find stuff like Nova 3 I mean, but if you look for simple puzzle games like Cut the rope you should be ok. The top games will be available soon on WP8 devices tho.

Nope, it will get 7.8 and probably another update in the future (like 7.9 or something). Obviously this OS is much more locked down compared to Android, so you can't fiddle too much with it, like overclocking and stuff like that. However the OS is fully optimized for the hardware, so you don't really need to do anything in order to achieve smoothness and speed: the performance is optimal out of the box, unlike on some older Android devices. I had the GS2 as well before switching to WP, I haven't looked back since then. Trust me, you'll soon realize how great it is to simply USE your phone with no headaches.

yes,i have noticed how polished the os is.. i just read a article about the lumia 800 and a htc windows device. the phone had same specs, but the htc was clocked at 1,5 and the lumia 800 at 1.4 ghz,and the testers said that the htc was just that littlebi faster and smooter. im shour i will be satisfied wih wp 7, even though i have ordered one of the weakes devices in the lumia 800.. but as far as ive seen it, even with an singlecore prossesor the devise is very fast.. gonna go for the 920 later if im satisfied with the 800 what about roms? is it some roms that will acutally benifitt me to install? i dont care to mutch about just minor added settings to the phone. but if its a rom that actually makes the phone faster or something, please let me know. i know everything about android phones like rooting, installing roms, and so on. but i really feel like a bad ass noob at the windows phone platform

Well there are a few cool things you can do with a custom ROM. For example you can sideload third party apps (without using the marketplace), remap your search key, use different search engines, wake the phone with any button, customize the ui and more. However keep in mind that no speed improvements or RAM tweaks whatever are available at the moment. Have look here if you wanna know more, this one of the ROM threads. I'd give it a try for sure but since I did a manual update a while ago I have the Nokia bootloader so I'm stuck here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1665651

Is it possible to install Android 4 on Nokia Lumia 920?
Unfortunately not at this point in time, Many users would love to have a dual boot option, Set a bounty to the Dark Forces Team to work on HSPL and if there is enough interest then may be work will begin
Either way it will not be happening for a very long time.
Yes, you just need the boot floppy.
i want Android too.
Not much love in WM8 now.
According to the reviews I read getting HSPL for the WP8 devices is close to impossible. (although that was said about a lot of things) I personally would however not want Android on this awesome device even if someone paid me for it

Buy an Android phone then. Problem solved.
These aren't desktop computers you can just load any OS onto, they are complex embedded devices.
There is a surprising lack of compatibility on ARM processors, so you're better buying the phone with the OS you want to run.

Have to agree, why get a WM8 phone if you want to put Android on it?
HD2 was also a wm6.5 phone, right??
But I don't think there are a lot of HD2 still running wm6.5.
Why people keep porting different OS into it? They can just buy an android device, problem solved, too.
I think there will be more fans if 920 can be ported other OS.

What is "WM8"?
There are more than enough Android phones bro.
You bought the wrong phone if you really want Android
the Lumia 920 is pure Windows Phone, you can fell the power and style it
radiates
There was not a single port of Android to a WP7 phone and almost all of them had HSPL. When looking into HSPL for Nokia though some Devs decided it was to hard to crack - I would guess with Secure Boot this has not gotten easier.
So all in all: it is highly unlikely that you will see an Android port for the Lumia phones or any other WP for that matter. If you don't like WP8 and want an Android device: sell the Lumia and buy an Android - everything else seems likely to just frustrate you to no end.
