As you guys know or should know the Galaxy Note II is considered a smart phone on Verizon's network. They charge a $40 Monthly Line Access Per Device. I have de-activated my call/text and get data only at a data only rate plus smartphone fee. ie $40 (smartphone) + $60 (10GB) Share Everything Options for Data Devices vs having $40 (smartphone) + $100 (10GB) Unlimited Talk & Text + Shared Data . So that being said I was wondering If some one could show me how to change my device id, model number, baseband, or hardware number. What ever they look at to identify my device as Galaxy Note II. I like to change it to CLONE it into "Verizon Tablet Device" if you will. In case you still dont get what i would like to see solved its that I want Verizon to recognize my Galaxy Note II as a current available tablet on there plans. ie display to Verizon that my phone "is" a Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab, etc I think you get the picture. I only need the data and gps to work if thats even relevant. I know it can be done. Its XDA after all Thanks guys ahead of time!

I don't know much about modifying the low level stuff, but couldn't you just get a SIM card activated for a tablet and put that in the Note II? I've never done it, but I have heard that people have swapped SIMs between phones and jetpacks/tablets all the time to us unlimited data on other devices. Maybe that would work here too? Again, not too knowledgeable here, just throwing that lead out there...
Edit your build.prop, I would imagine. Replace all references to the Note 2 to the Note 10.1 tablet, or whatever that thing is called.
I am not responsible.

That are going off the MEID from their master database, so you'd have to change that (which isn't discussed here since it's illegal).

I don't believe swapping the sim won't solve the issue. I think they know what device is being used unless the device is branded into the sim which I highly doubt but thanks.

You're correct it won't work. Verizon and all carriers for that matter identify the device being used by the imei. So to do what the OP wants requires changing the imei. Which as mentioned is illegal and can't be discussed on xda.

ok so i bought the UK version of the Galaxy S3...i was told by many since AT&T can't recognize the uk version of the phone, i can sign up for the 10/month unlimited data plan...so i called them yesterday and gave them my dummy phones ime number...everything was good all day phone worked great..but i just got home and i got an email saying that my "iphone" doesn't have the proper data package and changed it to the 30 month/3 gig plan...so i'm confused...did they know i was using a smart phone??
maybe i screwed up not giving them the galaxy s3's ime number?
Doesn't matter what country it's from they can still enter your ImeI and know what you using.
Lets hope AT&T doesn't do as they did with the N1 and go after the medianet users.
You are SOL, it appears in this case your phone IMEI algorithm is in the ATT IMEI sweeps. They have the UK SGS III flagged as an iPhone just as they had the white Galaxy Note flagged as a blackberry.
this is a hit or miss thing. Best thing to do is give them an imei of a dumb phone from AT&T. Been running with that on my GNote.

IMEI ranges are openly available and AT&T has the capability to scan for devices that fall within and then compare those to the data plan. The only thing that has stopped them from doing this wholesale is that it requires a great deal of resources and they have chosen to stick with the money. Otherwise there would not be anyone doing the medianet gambit without an IMEI spoof. The situation with the N1 was different in that they publicly stated they were going after Google and did so, it was a shot across their bow saying do not screw with our subbed phone system by getting into the business of selling unlocked phones to our customers. If they have decided to take this course with the sgs3 you will know soon enough as there will be many reporting that they were kicked to smartphone data but it would not be business as usual up to this time.
The other way that people get caught is that they are flagged at the time of making the switch by the csr and it sounds like this might be what happened here since this is the only report of it so far.

Hello
I bough what it looks like a brand new i717 on craigslist at @ $200. It is in pristine condition, boxed with all the accessories including a genuine flip case... everything fresh and still smelling like new. It has a bad IMEI though.
The seller said it was a display unit on an AT&T store and that they block the IMEIs of the phones that are removed from the display counter. The guy even had an AT&T t-shirt... Truth or lie? I don't know, it still seemed a great deal to me and I bought it anyway since I've seen them on ebay selling well above $300 in "used" (all scratched up) condition.
So, I have two questions:
-Is it true that a blocked IMEI will work overseas? (I also took the risk on buying it because I will move overseas in a few months)
-Is there anything I can do to use it now with my T-Mobile account?
Thanks
Not sure about it working overseas. No experience.
But you could also sell it to somebody who wants to use it on T-Mobile USA since a bad AT&T IMEI doesnt matter on T-Mo
Looks like you are screwed unless you can find stuff to manage stolen phones... I'd take our as a lesson of "if it looks too good to be true..."

No, I haven't called At&t at all... I don't think I'm going to have any luck asking them to fix the imei of a blacklisted phone that I boought on Craiglist... I do have a T-mobile sim but I haven't inserted it yet. Why? because I have read many times that if you insert a sim on a phone with a blocked imei they will block the sim card automatically...

Oh that sucks. I will unlock it and take it with me overseas... I guess I shouldn't have any problems using it there (Lima, Peru).
Ok this sucks even more. A friend grabbed the phone and inserted his own AT&T sim card just to "see what happens"... his line got automatically suspended. It didn't even work when inserted the sim back to his own phone. Of course this has just happened a few minutes ago (Saturday night when customer service is closed).
I will call customer care tomorrow. Do any of you guys know what are the steps to restore the line? Is it just a simple call or does he need to buy a new sim?
Thanks

I agree. He called ATT this morning and his line was suspended as "lost or stolen". The rep never said anything about using the sim on a blacklisted device or anything similar. They restored his service right away,
Anyway... my i717 is now stored and I won't mess with it until I move overseas. Beware of inserting your sim on an blacklisted device!
Not to hijack your thread, but a "friend" of mine just stole a brand new note from best buy and wants me to help him unlock and root it. Not that I really care about best buy (and I really don't care that he stole it) but I'm thinking on refusing on general principle just because his actions raise the prices of phones and service for the rest of us. What would you do?

I'd tell your friend, that if he was clever enough to steal it, then he should be clever enough to get a job and buy one... the thieving little socialist.
In the principle of helping anyone root their phone, I'd not do it for them. I would help them read and learn how to do it, as that helps general understanding of what they are doing and may eliminate future help calls.

XDA is no longer worth my time.
Cell Spa sales stolen phones
Unfortunately I bought a Galaxy S2 in September from a cell phone store (" Cell Spa" in Sugar Land Texas) that sales stolen Phones. I was able to call AT&T and told them to release my SIM card and they did. They told me the IMEI on the phone was linked to a stolen phone so basically there was nothing I could do. They are not concerned about returning the phone to the original person who claimed the theft so I'm stuck with a blacklisted phone????:crying:
What was that line from Forrest Gump? Oh yeah, "stupid is as stupid does". Anyone that buys or sells stolen phones, gets what they deserve. Remember....it was stolen from someone that actually paid money for it!

I have a VZW Note2 with an unlocked bootloader and Beans v10 rom. Under my Verizon account my phone is listed as an S3. I called VZW and tried to get this changed but they could not do anything about it and insisted that I was wrong and am using an S3. Then they said I would have to take it in to a store to get checked out. I have tried to re-register the device online and it shows the phone as a Note2 based on the IMEI number but when I apply the changes it always reverts back to listing my phone as an S3. I have used this sim card in an S3 a few months ago after I bought the N2 for a few minutes then put it back in my N2. Maybe the sim needs to be reset? Has anyone else experienced this before?
I think I'd revert back to stock then take it to a Verizon store. This could really screw you if you were to get a warranty replacement or an insurance replacement.

I went for six months on Sprint where they classified my phone as a different phone then I had. It was a screwup in their database and eventually they fixed it. I'm sure it's the same thing here too. Even my international Note2 turned up as a dumb phone on one of the imei check sites. These companies don't have their own database of phone imeis, they use a 3rd party generated database created by offshore workers or automated systems so there are bound to be some errors.
I would take it in to a Verizon Store and let them see it and get it noted on the account just in case you have to do a return.
Yes to fix you will need to go to corporate store get new sim and activate note 2 as cpe.
It's not that it thinks your note 2 is an s3. It's just not updating your imei in their system so it thinks you are still on the s3 that was previously activated. Seen it before had to do the above to fix it when the issues has popped up.

Yes, the fact that it's blacklisted simply means that Verizon's database shows it as not being able to be activated. This has no effect on the phones usability on another carrier.

Keep in mind att uses gsm radio and Verizon uses CDMA.
You may run into trouble.
However I believe the Verizon note 2 is a works phone?
Who knows exactly what that means for you.

Figures someone who uses barrack Obama as name wouldn't be any help how fitting. The note II has gsm and cdma radios. It's unlocked from the factory so you can throw a t-mobile, AT&T, straight talk ect and it'll work fine. The note supports 1900mhz frequency which is the refarned hspa42 for t-mobile and 3g hspa for at&t

I buy/sell/trade phones and I've run into a couple bad esn phones (no I don't buy them, shady people report them stolen). I actually picked up a Note 2 several months ago. I checked the esn over 611, came back clean, brought it home several hours later to put it on my wife's line. We popped her sim in, it activated, then almost immediately deactivated. After hours on the phone with Verizon they said the seller reported it and there was nothing I could do. We got her a new sim card and reactivated her S3. As I considered my options, the next day I called Verizon and checked the ESN again. The lady said it was clean. I didn't understand and took it to the store to ask a rep. It was explained to me that when a IMEI is blacklisted, it "burns" the sim card you put in it. Since we are in no way faulted on our plan, we were given a new sim card. The rep explained that the phone is blacklisted against that one sim card. So if I put my new sim in, it is now linked to my (clean) account.
Long story short - if you pop in a sim card, it will get zapped. If you get a new one and try again, it SHOULD work fine on Verizon.
I hold no responsibility to what you do or how accurate that info is. It worked for me and was approved by a Verizon rep. Try it or don't.

If a seller reports a phone stolen, they can sell the phone and collect the cash, then turn it into insurance and get a new phone.
They don't care about you actually still being able to use the phone or not, only that they get free money and a new phone.
I bought my Note 2 off of Craigslist in November I checked the number with Verizon. I was told everything was good to go. About two weeks ago I got a call from the Sheriff's office letting me know that I was in possession of a phone that had been stolen directly from one of their stores. I had put my own SIM card in so I never had any issues.

I would assume that you could, Just because Verizon has put the ban hammer down on the phone doesn't necessarily mean that other carriers would also. I guess the best way to know is to give it a shot.

I had a similar issue with a S3 when they first came out. I traded a Razr Maxx for it. I used it for a while until I found a blue one, so I gave it (white) to my wife. About 3 months later I got a call from an investigative department of Verizon. I explained the situation and they allowed me to keep the S3 (unblacklisted) for cooperating with them. I gave them all the info of the person I got it from. That guy called me a week later to warn me that Verizon may be calling, lol. Turns out the person be bought it from had stolen several of these off a Fed Ex truck before they reached the store.

Hey everyone, forgive my bad English, not my native language.
As the title says, I have problems tethering with my galaxy S3. My provider is Orange (France). I knew when I bought it 2 weeks ago that tethering wasn't part of my package but I have been doing it anyway with my galaxy S1 for 2 years with a slim ICS ROM (a CM one).
So as soon as I got the phone, I tried tethering with the stock ROM and confirmed my provider was preventing it and offering various pricely offers via an internet page when trying to tether... Then I rooted it and flashed CM 10.1. Tried tethering. It worked fined for a couple of days but now I get the Internet page from my provider offering tethering packages. I've been searching on the net for solutions but can't find any.
Some people think it's due to the Agent User. I think it's unlikely. Others think it's due to the fact that I got a new Sim card (micro sim). I tried a few Roms but nothing changed.
Funny thing is I managged to put the new micro Sim Card in my old galaxy S1 which normally uses old Sim cards and guess what? Tethering works like a charm...Should I keep the old S1 as a modem? I'm always on the road and kinda need the tethering. :crying:
I wonder how my provider knows I'm tethering with my S3 and sees nothing with my S1? I did a factory reset, data wipe, formated the SD card but it still doesn't work. Do you have any advice/suggestions? I'm at lost here. Thanks for you help
that's illegal, you're violating terms of service
So you pay for tethering GlenBun? That's bull. I shouldn't have to pay to use my own internet I already pay for. That's retarded. I don't tether much at all, I do if I need to though.
It is of course not illegal to tether .
It may be against your network / contract rules and invoke a penalty is all .
Penalty can be charges or more usual a cut off of data .
As i understand the network picks it up on a measure of the data flow or something like that .
jje
It's the carrier's way of protecting themselves. A computer uses much more bandwidth than a mobile phone under normal use, according to them. You pay to browse the net from your phone.
If your carrier charges extra for tethering - regardless of what you feel you should be allowed to do with your plan, then circumventing these controls is stealing. If you need tethering, you need a plan that includes it. Dont ask people on this forum to help you break the law

illegal as in violation of the contract.
if you don't like it you should switch carriers.
I'm sorry if some of you feel offended. You are right and I have been using tethering for so long that I didn't think that what I was asking on the forum was illegal. Didn'twant to start a debate either.
I did some more research and found a way around my problem. It's a bit annoying but it's still better than having to carry my SG1 around (which I keep as a backup plan :laugh.
Thanks for answering and sorry again for asking you something illegal.
i pay for the internet so i can use it where i want on what i want...
I`m glad that you find a way around

not if your carrier's terms of service, which you agreed to, prohibit it
Just move to three, im not paying for tethering yet I do it all the time for my gakaxy tab. They dont realise you're doing it unless you tether to something like a laptop. Then they prevent it. But for tethering to other phones and tablets three is perfect!

Three will pick up things like ipads so it really depends what you're using. If you're clever enough, you can easily tether laptops too, but as stated - its illegal. My three plan has tethering included

Where does it say that? They purposely release their phones without protection to sell to more people. They just wont honour warranty if you're rooted

A simple analysis of ip packets can say you if it has been through another device, the original Mac address (the first digits of it identify the chip manufacturer so easy to see it's not your phone) and so on.

Indeed, because your Nexus 7 has an Android User Agent string in the Android Browser (much like your phone) and your Desktop Browser does not have an Android User agent String... So packet analysis identifies your laptop as being a computer, ergo - shouldn't be connected to the network
"Illegal" requires a law to disallow it, in contrast to broken tos which invoke a penalty and/or revokation of the contract.
Huge difference, same as in rooting being against certain ToS but never illegal in sane countries.
What most people talking against tethering do not realize is that most old internat contracts on Dsl prohibited the usage by more than a single computer.
My old (Galaxy S1) contract for mobile phone included 30Gig traffic but I was disallowed to visit any webpage containing pictures, videos or other media, use Voip, or download stuff.
Would you _really_ follow that contract to the letter?
Usually a vpn connection or removing their proxy from the APN is enough to bypass filters.
Any encryption (like https) will work fine too.

poor choice of words. I am not a native speaker
Circumventing contracts to take something for free that you are supposed to pay for is stealing. In the UK stealing is illegal last I checked. Just like downloading an album from torrent sites or watching cable through a chipped box
Would I do it? Sure but will I openly tell someone how to break the law? Nope
