SGH-T849 Dead As The Proverbial Doornail - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got in a nice Galaxy Tab SGH-T849. Which would be a LOT nicer if it worked..
I have done the rudimentary things. Checked the power plug and cable, cleaned the contacts, etc etc. No luck.
There is absolutely no response from the Tab. I had it charging overnight, so I know it has a good charge. Assuming it is capable of taking a charge.
I just wanted to know if there was anything else I can try before I tear into it.
Thanx in advance for any assistance rendered.

If you connect it to your PC, do you see any devices show up? If not, does it do anything if you hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds or so while connected? Knowing what devices show up can help diagnose what's wrong.

Hi and thanks for the reply..
Absolutely nothing shows up when I plug in the USB cable. I held the power button down for 30sec and still nothing from the PC or the unit.

OK, that's bad. Sounds like it's completely dead. At this point, I'd take the back off and probe the battery to see if it has any juice.
To remove it, you've got to remove two screws from the bottom edge next to the accessory connector. Then you can use a spudger tool to remove the back cover. When fully charged, the battery should read 3.7v. If you don't have a voltmeter, you're kind of screwed. However, you can at least look around and see if there's any obvious signs of major damage.
If the battery's depleted, it's not guaranteed that it's bad - it's possible that the charging circuitry is dead. You can verify that the charge circuit is working by probing the battery with a voltmeter while the charger is connected.
Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zslF7P5Wxcc for instructions on how to get to the battery.

Yea, I already have the back off.. The two screws on the bottom are of the tri-driver variety.. Check my tools to see if I have one of those.
Thanx again.. I'll check the voltages and get back..

Unplugging Power Supply/Battery

I am having an issue similar to another user. There is a question mark in my battery indicator and the only way it turns on is when I have it plugged in. The other user opened up his G tablet and unplugged the power supply then plugged it back in. Can somebody let me know exactly where they cord I have to unplug is? Thanks.
I know there is a breakdown of the hardware here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842354
But I've got it open and I just need someone to tell me exactly what I need to unplug.
Did you ever figure this out? I'm assuming it's the jack with multi-colored wires coming out of the battery, but unplugging/plugging this back up didn't fix my problem.
is is the multicolored wire that was talked about. I have never heard of this fixing this problem though. What I would try is to completely drain your battery. Then charge it fully all the way till the light turns green. Then open up CWM and go into the advanced settings. Click on reset battery status or something to that extent. Make sure the tablet is unplugged. Hopefully it will fix your battery stats.
I dunno about Dirty Bird, but mine won't run without being plugged into the charger. So there is no way to discharge the battery.
When I plug the charger into the G-tablet, the LED which is supposed to show green or red doesn't light up at all.
I am really disgusted about this - especially now that I've opened the case. Grrr.
But, thanks for trying to help anyway.
this is the power supply form the battery.
Thank you. I had the right thing.
I am now reading over some threads about the power connector - I reckon it's possible that it is disconnected, although if the tablet is getting power through it, it seems to me that the battery should be getting power for recharging as well. But I am certainly no expert!
Edit: Checked the connector and it seems to be okay, firmly connected to the board and the solder looks okay to me. :/

[Q] HELP! Atrix does not power on!

Ok so I was at work listening to music when my phone froze. Pulled the battery, which was only at about 85%, and tried to restart. And, nothing. No green light, no dual core screen. Tried four different chargers, including OEM Motorola charger, and tried hooking up to my home PC. Only thing that happens is when I hook up to the PC without the battery in the green light comes on. Power button still doesn't turn the phone on. Just turns off the light. I tried to search, but the closest I found was people stuck at the dual core screen or people who didn't realise their batteries were dead. If it helps, I'm unlocked, rooted, and running GingerMod 2.3.6. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
Sam issue
I am having the same issue with my wife's phone. We both have Atrixes and I have tried swapping batteries and her battery works fine in my phone. I still can't get it to start up. No green light when plugged into the charger but a solid green when plugged into usb on my PC. How did you end up solving your issue?
I got this problem once. To fix, pull battery out, plug in wall charger to phone (without battery), should boot to the battery with question mark icon, plug battery back in.
I work at a cell phone repair store , and from reading your symptoms I think you might have an issue with the flex cable running your LCD. In the atrix if you drop it there is a possibility of shaking the flex cable off your board, and its a matter of micro soldering or just connecting the cable. I DO NOT suggest doing it yourself. If you want it done professionally call my work. 6053350411

I solved this problem with wall charger
Will anyone here elaborate how to fix it again?
If I plug it in wall charger, no response and no light.
If I plug it in USB, green lights on without battery, no light with battery.
In any case, pressing the power button cannot power on the device.
Please help. Thanks.
Sounds to me like your battery is having issues. Maybe try getting a new battery?
Thanks for your quick reply. I have actually got a new battery already. Still the same behaviour.
Then I can only assume it's the phone. Perhaps the charging circuit. In any case, sorry but I have nothing to recommend. :dunno:
If the plugging it into the wall without a battery in it didnt work... then try waiting for the phone to boot (assuming that it still is and the LCD is disconnected) and swipe where the unlock button normally is, pressing volume up or down, or perhaps try ghosting to adb and run adb devices in the command line... or simply try calling it lol. Also a good piece of information to get... does the backlight come on? If you can prove that the phone is in fact running, then it is most likely the lcd cable as someone said...

Thanks for your advice. I didn't drop the phone before it went to "no-response" status. I just put it on a HD dock for charging and the next day it doesn't boot anymore. I have put in HD dock for charging for a few weeks already.
My phone doesn't boot at all. I don't see any backlight or any special response. Or It does something that I don't know. I tried to plug into USB after pressed the button. If it's on, the computer should detect a device, right?
Any ideas are welcomed, i will try all.

I have the exact same problem, and would be grateful to know if you managed to resolve this problem.

Touchpad won't turn on, yes I've tried buttons.

My touchpad won't turn on for some reason, yes I tried the button combinations, yes it is charged. It was sitting on the Touchstone for a day or two, and now it won't turn on. It has been plugged into the wall charger since yesterday morning.

Try holding the power button and pressing the home button 10 times. Then release the power button. If that doesn't work...
Leave it off the charger for 3 days. Then plug it in overnight and hope for the best the next day morning. And if that doesn't work...
Send it into HP.

They still honor the one year warranty. They no longer offer advanced replacement where you get a new one immediately, but they will fix it if you send it in.

Everything you did was software, so it shouldn't matter. I thought I read a thread on here that someone said they sent theirs back for the speaker cracks with android still on, and HP didn't care. But it did come back with a clean webOS install IIRC.

Sounds like you've eliminated the touchstone (assuming that wall charger is the little ACDC/USB power supply).
If you're the excitable type (and like learning about things for the sake of learning):
Unplug USB cable. Open your touchpad and manually disconnect the battery. Let sit for a moderate bit then reconnect battery. Do not reassemble. Try powering on. If nothing, plug in USB cable. At a minimum you're looking for the backlight to do something.
If nothing happens, and if available, try a different USB cable and/or power supply (need 5v ~ 2A to power up).
If still nothing, and you're on a roll, unplug the battery again and reconnect the USB cable so you've got mains power.
At this point, if still nothing, reassemble and make arrangements to send it back. There isn't really anything else you can eliminate.
Just a guess, but if nothing seems immediately obvious in what caused it, most likely the charging circuit was overvolted. Any power spikes or brownouts in the last week or so?
(opening the touchpad is pretty easy)

I might just have to take it apart. No power spikes or anything, definitely not on the touchstone. And through a surge protector.

Maybe the only thing to try at the moment would be the old battery drain technique... Usual means is to tape down the power button and wait days and days until it is dead, really dead ( shows nothing when connected to computer), then connect to wall charger and reboot and see what you get. This is really the ultimate "hard reset" but same result can be obtained far more quickly by removing the back and disconnecting the battery for a while to remove residual charge... Not as frightening or difficult as it might seem, have done it loads of times for various faults and to replace batteries in several tabs.

But Im a doing it correctly? i just connected it to the computer for apx mode then after that i tape the power button so that it continuously on and off for apx mode then i disconnected it to the computer or I should leave it stay? i think it will charge if i connected it to the computer.
If you're trying to discharge by taping down power button just leave the tab on it's own not plugged into anything... Plugging into something that charges rather defeats the object of the exercise

In some cases it takes more than a day, be patient... Unless you are prepared to remove the back and unplug battery... The aim of the game is to completely power down the tab and remove residual charge in components, the "hardest" reset available.... So, two ways to achieve that is drain battery or disconnect battery... If you drain battery you must be sure it's empty to achieve desired effect then you obviously cannot restart it without charging a bit as the battery is empty, so you connect charger then try to boot, but the tricky bit is being sure the battery is completely drained otherwise you are just wasting your time... That is why battery disconnect is preferable

I had to purchase an iFixIt repair kit to get the correct driver to remove the two screws. I disconnected the battery, waited ten minutes and when I reconnected I was SO HAPPY to see the battery charging icon. I charged for a while a fired up the tablet. Everything was the same as if nothing happened. I am so happy because Samsung said they could fix the problem and it would be a flat rate of $150 which I don't have and I would lose everything.

It took me longer to remove the screws then anything. I stripped them and will need to replace them. I tried a regular screwdriver before the tri-wing screw driver and paid dearly in time. Once the two screws were removed, use a plastic pry tool starting on the bottom where the screws are because once the bottom and sides are pried lose, the top will slide over the extended audio jack.
1.5 hours to remove stripped screws
10 minutes to pry open
1 minute to disconnect battery (did not remove battery or three data cables on top of battery)
10 minutes wait for discharge
3 minutes to re-connect battery cable (it slides forward and snap down)
2 minutes to replace case

Forgive the gravedigging, but I am unable to find anything regarding my situation, and the original poster has a problem that is similar to mine (my thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52931715 ). I hope someone is able to give me a hand here!
I am wondering, it has been over 15 minutes since I disconnected the battery completely, but connecting the P7500 to my laptop still shows an APX device being connected. Could there be some hardware issue preventing the device from being fully discharged?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I've got the same issue as Lightside and the original poster. Mine is a GT-P7500, which had CM10 nightly ROM with CWM recovery. I sold it on eBay, but before selling, I wiped the tablet and got it back to the Clockworkmod main screen. I turned it off completely and shipped it to the buyer, ready for it to be registered by the new user.
The buyer received the tablet and from the e-mails I received from him in the first couple of days, all was going well. Then, a couple of days later, he sent me an e-mail saying that the screen shows the android lying on its back with "Odin download" mode showing. A day later, he sends me a messaging saying that he can't turn the tablet on at all. The guy who bought it is an old man and didn't know much about fixing the issue. I asked him whether he powered the tablet off while still plugged in to the wall charger and he confirmed that he did. I asked him to return it to me and I can try and fix it, so now, I have the tablet back and it won't turn on. Here's what is happening:
1. I drained the battery using the cellotape method
2. Installed the NVflash drivers
3. Waited for the battery to drain (almost 9 days and the LED flash stopped blinking, so assumed it was completely drained)
4. Plugged it in to the PC and it immediately showed up again as a device under the USB controllers within Device Manager
5. I then unplugged the battery by opening the back of the tab, left it for 15 mins, then tried the wall charger again, but nothing. No charging icon on the screen.
When I try to press the power button, I can see the LED light up, but the screen is still blank.
Could this be a hardware issue and if so, what do you think could have caused it?
Could really do with some help here, folks! I don't want to have to give the buyer a refund because technically, he got it when it was in working condition and he probably did something to screw it up, but since he's an old man, I thought I'd try and help him, if I can.

And yes, I already tried holding it near a bright light while pressing volume down + power. I just want my photos / videos back.

Are you using the HTC Stock charger? Maybe the charger is the problem. If you can't get that battery charged, you are out of luck. You could take it to a repair shop and maybe they could fix the battery. If you send it in to HTC they will swap it out.

Thanks, but for a while there, no chargers were working. Then randomly, my car charger started working. But, it kept just restarting, as if the power button was being held down. I use a pocket knife to wiggle the power button, and it booted up. Something must have gotten in the crevices of the device somehow, no idea how.
I've figured out how to get certain chargers to work if they're positioned just right, but it's still a pain cause it sometimes will still act as though the power button is being held down and I have to wiggle it around... not an easy task when the button is flush with the body.
You know if it's possible to take open it up and make sure everything is clean? Probably a bad idea, right?

I've seen posts where the person has taken them apart, but it is not something I'd want to do. You might try some compressed air on the power switch - maybe you can blow out that speck of dust or whatever. Might be worth a try...
Thanks, that's a great idea. Still... If the phone really was dead, I'm really surprised that there's no possible way to recover the data! If a desktop computer dies, you connect the harddrive to another device and your data is safe and sound.
Smartphones seem to be a new level of risk that we're not used to!
checked pm?
i think problem is in charging port , so if you can fix that , you can recover your files
