After scrounging, searching, hunting, and generally scrubbing every tree/rock/bush for answers, I have decided that it is time to post. As I am new to these forums, I sincerely appreciate any assistance in this matter. I have tried the only two methods that I can find to root my phone. the one by Bin4ry which is found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460. and another one from a different site that was for JB. I have made sure that both debugging is on as well as allowing installations of non-market applications. I have tried every single usb mode, that just on the off chance, mine was that one phone that wanted to seperate itself from society. Since my phone is running ICS 4.0.4 I should be using Bin4ry's version, but I get stopped by this

It says that It's done and that all is done, but I think that because the mounting permission was denied that it wasn't able to root the device. If I could get some assistance on this from someone with more experience, I'd appreciate it. Does anyone know how to fix/root this device? I don't know if this will make a difference or not but it says the software is VS840PP2

I wish someone would resolve this I see people all over the place bragging they have rooted their exceeds "showing proof" and no-one seems to give a crap that some people can't afford the most easily rooted phones and are forced to get the most workable less expensive phones. I have student loans and would have to pay a $400.00 deposit to be able to pay 150 dollars for a semi decent phone and my carrier won't allow me to use the phone I've had for a couple years that I rooted myself. I just want a viable answer to how do you root the exceed I know what I'm doing but I work for a living (making very little at that) and have a child to support so I can't devote a week to figuring it out and am frustrated that nobody seems to give a crap about anything but the new razr or the iphone (trendys).

Yep, I just rooted my VS840PP, seems you need to use the Lg Spectrum root, but since I'm new I can't post links, but you will need the driver file "LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.11.0.exe" and "LG_Spectrum_ICS.zip" (put these into a search engine)
Install Instructions
Download and unzip
Connect your phone to your PC
Make sure to have the LG USB drivers installed
Make sure to have debugging enabled
Make sure to have USB connectivity set to internet connection
Run the script for your OS (.bat for Windows, .sh for Linux)
Enjoy
I really did think it would make my phone not boot, but surprisingly it worked! EDIT 8-16-13 treat this phone like any other LG Lucid, which means you can go to CM 10 4.1 Jellybean on this phone.

Yeah one which is Android 4.1.2, the file is called "cm-10-20130424-UNOFFICIAL-vs840.zip", but you have to rollback to GB 2.3.6(due to locked ics bootloader), install root, CWM and finally install the CM 10 based LG Lucid beta rom. I see you edited your post and yes it is the standard LG Lucid Gingerbread downgrade method. The forum thread title is "[ROM][BETA] CyanogenMod 10 for the LG Lucid" and its on "androidforums.com" all info you need should be in that forum thread. I can tell you that Jellybean works very well on this phone, and I never want to go back to 4.0.4. :good: But of course there are some bugs, as it seems signal strength is lower, but I may have the wrong baseband for this phone.

Ok i got it rolled back to gb, but it says i need a sim card and no wireless or 3g, i cant download the cwm unless i restore to ics. Im ecstatic that i got this far I rooted it rolled it forward
Installed rom manager and downloaded the restore but i cant run it without some sort of data connection. Thank you all for getting me this far but what do I do?

You may have to install the baseband for the Exceed. I think in the CyanogenMod beta thread on AndroidForums there is a link but I'm not sure. Use ROM Manager to install CWM Recovery and then Flash CM10.

As long as you're rooted, search on the internet for "cwm installer for lucid" and follow the install instructions on gingerbread, then you want to flash the CWM touch recovery by searching for LGVS840_CWMT.zip and clicking on "CWM Touch Flashable Recovery for LG Lucid 4G - LG Cell Phones ..." Make sure you have the CWMT zip and LG Lucid CM 10.1 zip on your micro sd card. You then use rom manager to boot into recovery and flash the CWMT zip, then do a factory reset and clear caches and finally flash the LG Lucid CM 10.1 available on androidforums.

May I ask which firmware are you suppose to use to do a roll back? Can you just use the Lucid's firmware or does it have to be the Exceed firmware to work for the roll back?

It's the stock gingerbread for the LG Lucid and you look for the method to install with LG's tool and you will need the file "VS840ZV6_06.S6_06.P58014.R5.cab" and look for how to roll back to gingerbread on the lg lucid to find out how to roll it back.

Thanks a bunch, I thought it would be okay to do that but just wanted to make sure before doing it.
Hmm, after restoring successfully, for some reason I cant get the Wi-Fi to work. I tried both versions the V5 and V6 in the dropbox posted on android forum. Can root and everything but unable to access any internet without wifi. Kinda stuck without CWM. Any clues?
Edited: Whoops, Haha, a Factory Reset fixed it.
Edited: Blah after being able to install Rom Manager and installing CWM "Successful" I still get into CWM recovery.
Edited: CWM solved but now I get the "Cant Mount Sd" in CWM. Trided both "fat and "extFAT" and no go. Any Help?
Edited: Finally! Bad SD card! CM 10 up and running! Woot!

Glad to see you got CM 10 on this phone, since it runs pretty good, the only issue I had is the way it handles low signal areas, which is why I upgraded to the LG Spectrum plus I wanted Verizon 4G LTE.

I think I may have had the same issue and it turned out the root files didn't extract correctly the first time, so I deleted the root files and extracted them again and it worked. Of course I can't exactly remember it now, but its worth a try. EDIT: Wait no, it looks like root installed fine, are you on stock ICS or Gingerbread? As Gingerbread has special root tools that are different from ics, also make sure you have superSU installed and try the root checker from the playstore.

New to the community and was hoping this was a good place for a related question. I have an exceed and I rooted without problem yesterday. I believe my SD Maid app deleted some important files or something because I stopped receiving incoming calls and texts. Anyway, I soft bricked my phone a few times and got the "Long time no see" message. I thought I unrooted my phone so I tried doing a hard reset thinking I would possibly fix the problem. That made matters worse. My soft brick became the only thing I could see no matter how many times I pulled the battery out and rebooted I was stuck at that screen. After hours of trying to get my pc to recognize my phone/get my phone in download mode, I finally fixed it and rooted again. Problem is that when I went through the unbrick process and flashed the kdz file to my phone, it was then stuck in activate mode. It wasnt a big deal because I just played dumb with verizon and they fixed it in their system being that when trying to activate it didnt give me the option to activate on my same plan/number. A bit annoying but better than nothing. My question is when I roll back to gingerbread or flash CM10 will I be stuck in activation mode again? Sorry for the long post, just figured I would give the what and why before my question!

You mean the activation screen, that you can quite easily bypass, also once it is is active it doesn't need to be activated again. Here is how to bypass activation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WGKCdlnt1s

I know this is an old post but I just snuck and rooted the girlfriends LG Lucid VS840ZV9 / 4.0.4 / software update version 6.3.0_B7

I recently rooted my T-mobile 4G Samsung Galaxy S with SuperOneClick, but I think I have decided that root is way too advanced for me. I have not installed any ROMs since rooting, is it still possible for me to reinstall Android back to the stock version safely, or has my device been permanently modified??
For those unaware of SuperOneClick, installing it did not require me to lose any data on the phone to root, which was pretty nice. I like being rooted, my inner geek lusted for it, but I have a feeling it's just not for me. Perhaps if I learned a little more about ROMs, I may go that route. Either way, I want to reinstall Android and start over.

You can go back to stock rom find your stock rom and flash it with odin search in google

An easier way to do it is to install SuperSU from the market and do full unroot in settings
Thanks guys, I will definitely look into those options. If I went in the root direction, could I possibly reformat the entire phone including the SD card? I have nothing on there worth keeping and want a clean slate to start from, the phone is currently running at super slow speeds.

yes try twrp or cwm with that format system dalvik cache, cache data or anything you want
then flash your stock rom using odin
you will get a new phone as if you bought it today
Using the XDA wiki I found here, I think I've decided I am going to attempt to install a custom ROM.
I'm already rooted w/SuperOneClick, and am still on stock Gingerbread 2.3.6. This would be classified as BLM, correct?
If I am following this wiki correctly, I am at the step of installing a kernel to obtain ClockworkMod Recovery. I did some looking around between the two choices listed, Basic With A Twist and Blast-Off!. The XDA wiki suggests that All custom kernels for this device have CWM Recovery preinstalled, but I cannot seem to verify this. I'd hate to fool around with either of the two if I cannot obtain ClockworkMod Recovery.

check the thread of the kernel there should a list of features provided
if the kernel is integrated with cwm then t should be listed in the features so you can be sure about cwm

From many many different threads and frankly confusing instructions I think I have puzzled together the following solid guideline for my kindle fire hdx from basic root to custom rom. Currently my firmware is 13.3.1.0.
Could someone take a look at this and tell me if I got this right or if I need to do stuff differently (or could do them better)? Don't assume that something is obvious, if it isn't written down, don't be shy to mention it. I would be ever so grateful .
Edit: I'm updating my experience as I move along the list and get more info just in case this might be useful to someone who is just as lost as I was in the beginning
Obligatory disclaimer: this is just a step-by-step guideline that worked for me. I'm not responsible if you chose to follow any of these steps and damage or brick your device.
Guideline:
-Download firmware version 3.2.3.2 and upgrade directly from any of the previous version by putting the file into the internal storage of the kindle, going to settings>device>system update on the kindle and installing the update from there.
-Root with Towelroot in the HDX toolkit downloaded from here (Edit: I got various error messages at this step but got it to work in the end. The 3rd post here shows what I did to get it working after getting error message 2 and 3 at various times)
-block OTA also with the tool in the HDX toolkit (is there a way to safely check that this worked? Edit: It worked )
-connect to wifi and install Flashify from the playstore (Edit: I ended up installing File Expert and flashify on another android device, backing up the flashify apk and sideloading it with ES File Explorer from the amazon app store to the kindle, I guess I could have also download the apk somewhere but I have trust issues.)
-download the img of TWRP 2.8.5.0. and put it in internal storage of kindle (had no problems)
-use flashify to save original stock recovery (had no problems)
-Use flashify to flash TWRP (had no problems)
- Boot into recovery mode via flashify to see if it worked (had no problems)
Now either A)
-download CM11 image and gapps and put the zip files on internal storage
-Edit: disconnect Kindle from USB afterwards
- go into TWRP recovery mode (by powering off kindle and then pressing power and volume at the same time)
- make backup of original stockrom under backups and save copy on your Computer
- wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache under wipe/advanced (all except internal)
- flash cm11 image and gapps (under install and then find them in the files)
- reboot
-Edit: I had the wifi not connecting problem that some people have with CM11 but a reboot took care of it.
-Edit 2: I couldn't get the kindle app to work on CM11 (it wouldn't synch my books, the device wasn't recognized by amazon and it would crash every time I logged in.) so I ended up replacing it with the Nexus rom. If the chance of this happening doesn't bother you then CM11 seems to still be a good choice.

- download HDX thor nexus rom and gapps and put the zip files on internal storage

Mostly correct, you can update directly to 3.2.3.2 no need for incremental steps. The only way to know if ota blocker worked is to check for update but there's really no need, as soon as you've run towel root just disable WiFi as it won't be needed anymore.
Where is unlock bootloader? As I know, you cannot flash TWRP without unlocking bootloader?!

You can flash a cuber signed TWRP on a locked bootloader, as long as you're below 3.2.4.

Fully unlocking your bootloader is definitely worthwhile but it's quite a complicated endeavour and not required for running the current custom recoveries and ROMs. I'd recommend you stick with your current method and read up on the unlocking process once you're more conformable working with this device.

Fully unlocking your bootloader is definitely worthwhile but it's quite a complicated endeavour and not required for running the current custom recoveries and ROMs. I'd recommend you stick with your current method and read up on the unlocking process once you're more conformable working with this device.

- more robust recovery options when recovery (TWRP) is damaged/inaccessible; better chance of reviving a bricked device
- some custom roms install/operate better with unlocked BL (technically should not be needed but sometimes seen in early builds)
- some DRM aware apps on custom roms work better with unlocked BL(eg: playstore, prime)
Guidance form derpadoodle is sound. Enjoy what you have achieved thus far; revisit BL unlock when you are more comfortable with device/technique.

Thanks for the sound advice, I will probably never feel comfortable enough for that , especially because I haven't achieved much at all yet. I haven't even flashed TWPR yet.
Yay, I did it. CM11 seems to be working as intended! Thanks again for everyone who replied and also to everyone who put so much work into making and improving all the tools and software necessary to make this kind of thing even possible, I appreciate it!

I was on 3.0.5 when I got the device. Amazon didn't upgrade the firmware at all before sending it out, then I upgraded to 13.3.2.3. Why do you ask?
Hmm, I have now noticed that the kindle app is not working properly. I can sign in (though every time I sign in or deregister my account the app crashes) but it's not synching any of my books. They don't show up at all. The device (named android device 2 in the kindle app settings) does also not show up under my devices on amazon. Anyone know what the problem could be because this is a bit frustrating. Is this a bug with CM11 or with the amazon app?

Can't say definitively but I would lean towards CM11 as all Amazon apps (kindle/prime/shopping/video) work fine with the Nexus ROM (v2.0.5) which is layered on the same hw/fw base as CM11. Don't get me wrong; CM11 (and the devs who adapted to the HDX) are great! But there may still be a few hiccups with native Amazon apps.

Thanks for the opinion! I couldn't find any solution to the problem anywhere online and therefore just finished replacing CM11 with the Nexus rom, now the kindle app works perfectly fine and I'm very satisfied with what I've got. I will keep an eye out on rom development but for now I'm resting on my laurels :victory:. Considering that I was helplessly lost when I first came to the board I'm very happy with how smoothly everything went. But I really needed that step-by-step list I made and the assurance from the pros that it was correct, otherwise I would have probably made a careless mistake :silly:. Maybe it will be useful to a few other newbies as well. Not sure I will ever dare to fully unlock the bootloader like some suggested I might want to do at a later point in time, but we will see . Thanks again for the help!

Glad to hear everything is working well! My daily driver is on Nexus and I could not be happier. Everything works as it should. No need to unlock the bootloader unless you plan to do more modding. Enjoy your device!

Agreed, I was overwhelmed by all the different threads and possibilities at first. I ended up approaching it like any other research project for a paper or presentation and dumped every solid (and recent) piece of good advice into Evernote and sorting it out there. But writing and updating guides (especially with the fast development I have observed) would be a lot of work, I understand completely why no one would volunteer to do it and everybody would rather answer questions on a case by case basis.

First thing you want to do is block OTA (over the air updates) or your device may be upgraded by Amazon to a level that gives you less options. Suggest using HDX Toolkit (here) to both root and block OTA. Then install twrp (here). From there you can opt to replace Fire OS will several different roms including Nexus, CM11 or CM12.
Flashify is an app that allows flashing recovery and roms from from within Android vs adb or a recovery environment. You can grab it from the Play store or another market. It's a dangerous tool; use with extreme caution.
Be aware that any of the above actions, if executed incorrectly, can permanently brick your device with little/no hope of recovery (guess that's the definition of permanent). Read, read and read some more before taking any action. Be sure to keep WiFi off on your device until OTA is blocked to prevent auto-updates.
tldr;
So Optimal solution would be to get Gapps working on Stock 13.3.0.5, and from there I'll install and android launcher. But to do this, the Xposed problem will need to be fixed.
Has anyone else had a problem with Xposed where every menu leads to just a blank white screen?
Not-so-optimal would be to do all the upgrading, OTA blocking, flashing, and backing up to get it on like CM11 or something.

I just made my XDA account, I've been kinda lurking on the forums for a little while though.
I won a Kindle Fire HDX 7" (idk What gen or how to determine what gen it is. Its got 2gb RAM and 32gb Internal) that says its running 13.3.0.5 and so I decided to do a little research about custom roms and rooting and found this wonderful forum. I've had a bit of experience with custom roms, I loaded CM9 onto an LG Thrive (look that one up, its a bit of a pain to flash as well) And I'd love to see about flashing this brand new FHDX.
Now, I didn't purchase this tablet, so it is of no expense to me, however, I would rather not be reckless in my attempts to mess with it.
What I want:
Google Apps -- Play/Music/Gmail/Calendar/etc
Root
Android JB or KK OS or Android-like Launcher or Ubuntu Touch (idk about this one, it seems really cool, I've heard about it for a long time and never got the chance to play with it)
I'd love to stay away from bricks, but I'm not afraid of them enough to not flash it. I'm a computer engineer and kinda have some experience with android and flashing.
Now, as to my progress so far:
I've rooted it with towelroot and installed ES FileManager, SuperSU, and I've tried to install Xposed/HDXposed multiple times but it simply will not work correctly. Xposed gives me a white screen when I go into any of the menus and doesn't allow me to install after clicking "Framework". I've tried many different renditions of Gapps packages, but almost all of them result in a process failing or stopping.

I turned wifi on for a little bit and my Kindle decided it wanted to update, so now its running 13.3.2.5 :/
I've put it in airplane mode, and I'm thinking about doing this to downgrade it.

I'm not sure what you're up to, but I'd suggest to downgrade to 3.1.0 using the procedure in the thread you linked to (be sure to scroll down for the procedure for 3.2.5/3.2.6 because you can NOT use the edited build number anymore!), then install TWRP, unlock the bootloader and flash a ROM of your choice.

Alright, basic approach is here. Lots of info to read, so any questions just ask, before you brick your HDX.
I'm now Rooted running on 13.3.1.0
I've disabled OTA updates as well. From here I'll pick the rom I want to d/l, get TWRP installed, unlock bootloader with python/.unlock file, and flash the rom.

OK, don't forget to make a backup of Fire OS in TWRP (and move it to your PC) before you flash any custom ROM. Might be useful one day.

Alright XDA Community. I need some help. Desperately. So I had plans on rooting my tablet (TF201) to install a custom ROM. Being that I have version 4.1.1 installed I would looking for something a little newer and modern. That did not go as planned from the beginning. Since the first step was rooting it, I looked for a ROM. So I searched the web, including XDA and found KingRoot to root my device. Either KingRoot was a terrible choice or something did not go right with the process. Now when I turn on my device I get random pop ups for for stupid garbage that I don't want installed like What's App and UC News. Everything functions as it should but I get random messages that Settings stopped working. I get random apps being installed on a regular basis. I could be in an app and I get a blank / black box on top of something trying to open or install. This very frustrating and I am completely over my head now. So here is what I would love help with;
1. I would like to UNROOT my device to ALL stock settings and firmware. Completed
2. I would like to ROOT my device PROPERLY. Completed
3. I would like to install a custom ROM with Android 6.x or 7.x (Something plain and vanilla)
4. I would LOVE this help if at all possible in plain English Step by Step with pictures if possible. I would like it dummy proof.

PS. I do not need to back anything up. It was a fresh reset recently and I do not have anything to backup.

No. I downloaded it and installed it but when I go to run the APP it asks for my Google Credentials but it does not accept them. I use the credentials every day so I know my username and password but it does not work.
Delete you google account then run the bootloader unlocker again.

Thank you very much. That did the trick. Here is the problem though. I think I am way over my head on this. I did a Davlik Wipe and a Factory Reset but there is something still not right. I did both a Dalvik wipe and Factory reset last night before bed. I did not touch it once complete but on a regular basis I get pop ups about Android System stopped working or UC News. I cannot get rid of either of these on my tablet.
Any idea what I can do?

That worked. I was able to Root my device without issue. Actually that was a great tool. Nice and easy to work with.
So here is my next stop. What ROM do I pick? I was looking at 6.x or 7. It looks like KatKiss is pretty good but I am not sure.

No reason not to go straight to 7.1.2 just make sure you flash the correct TWRP.

And this is the part I don't understand. I have downloaded TWRP and ROM Manager from ClockWork. I have copied the ZIP folder to my SD card and placed it in my TF201. From here I don't know what to do.

Yeah. So now the tablet is stuck at the Asus Splash Screen. Been for the last 48 hours or so. I completely drained the battery but when I filled it back up, no difference.
Can you get into the TWRP recovery console?
