Downgrading firmware - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I am running 4.2.1 on my phone now and I believe it's very unstable. I'm getting a lot of crashes. I want to go down to 4.1.2 as it was great. Can someone please tell me how to downgrade? Should I just flash 4.1.2 on the phone from ODIN? Is it as simple as that or no?
I tried to search, but couldn't find any solutions. Please help. Thank you.

Yes its that simple . Read the downgrade thread read the faqs and stickies if you want more information .
4.2.1 is not a full release so it is buggy .

Thank you for your quick response. Do I need to watch out for a specific firmware like the XELLA or whatever? Or any I9300 firmware should be fine?

You can use any 4.1.2 rom.I back with xperianze .

EMB5 is a good stock release, find it over at Faryabs stock Rom thread in general.
It might be worth backing up your internal sd before the flash in order to format it, as this will get rid of the sd/0 partition layout and the get it back to the 4.1.x layout

Rooting automatically changes the status to modified. To get back OTA updated you have to go back to stock which means reset flash counter, unroot and flash stock rom. Or you just stay rooted and flash the rom you want via Odin/Mobile Odin.
There are guides to all of this in the stickies as well, maybe start reading there before doing any of above!
Thank you for replay. But I only began learning of Android from that side.

[Q] Support How to upgrade to 4.3 with the MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG

Hi.
I want to upgrade my Galaxy S I9000 to android 4.3
When looking around, I'm warned about the MMC-SUPERBRICK-BUG
I've checked, and my phone has this bug.
Currently I have android 4.1.2, isn't it possible to get any newer version (preferably 4.3)? If yes, a link to a guide would be much appreciated.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I didn't find any tread that solved my question.
EDIT: It is Galaxy S I9100 I have, not Galaxy S I9000 as posted above

Like the person above said, the brick bug is only present at stock 4.0.4. Therefore you don't have to worry.
JB 4.1.2 is the latest official firmware. If you want to upgrade to custom roms, root your phone and flash the one you like. Guides about these steps can't be missed of you search in the General Section and in the specific rom-threads.

Thx for your replies.
I should have made it more clear, that I was looking for a custom rom.
I have been looking at this [ROM][GT-I9100][JB][4.3.0] CyanogenMod 10.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382579
But it warned about the bug under instructions, so I was afraid to make any error, making my phone unusable.
So, if I'm understanding you right, I can follow the instructions under First time installing CyanogenMod 10.2 to your Galaxy S II, or coming from another ROM: without being afraid for the bug mentioned?
Thank you for your time to answer my post.
the brick bug is only present at stock 4.0.4. .
If you are not currently running 4.0.4/rooted, forget the brick bug. It's irrelevant.

Looking For 4.1.2
In fact I was looking for a solution to switch back to Custom 4.1.2 as it was the perfect ROM so far for me.
I have downloaded it from Sammobile but after Installing it via Odin I am unable to see any network and the Phone's IMIE is changed. I would greatly appreciate anyone to come up with solution for that....
Thanks everyone for being so kind...

Check your IMEI number, wheather it was changed to 0049XXXX - I have had the same problem. I downloaded from Sammobile firmware v4.3 and flash your phone with odin. My IMEI and network connection was restored. Looks like Samsung does not like us to downgrade the firmwares.

Solution.....
Hello guys....
I am very thankful to the xda forum and all the members who helped me to get through a serious problem..
Recently I installed 4.3 Leaked version on my GT-I9300 and the ROM proved to be worst ROM of life. So I decided to go back to 4.1.2.
I installed the custom ROM via Odin but I confronted a serious issue, when I was finished the installation I found that there was no network at all... Samsung's official told me that it is impossible to reverse the Android version...
I had no clue what to do. I flashed many ROMs but no solution at all. My IMIE was also kinda jumbled..
Many guys said it is EFS issue... But it is not EFS issue...
It is all because of different Modem issue.. all you need to do is just install a clean custom ROM from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ and Install the patched modem... you are done..
So here is the solution:
1. Download your desired CUSTOM ROM for your Country from Sammobile...
Link http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/
2. Install the ROM via Odin
3. Root it and Install your favorite recovery.
4. Install the Patched MG4 Modem Zip in Recovery Mode. Link https://www.dropbox.com/s/geispctijp...9300XXEMG4.zip
You are done....
This problem is all about MODEM version, so I don't think if EFS tricks are involved here.....
Finally credits go to all the XDA Members who put their heart and soul to present all the required guidance for me to be able to downgrade to lower Android Version.. I have only compiled the whole stuff into a single thread....
Thanks,,,
Plenty of solutions....

Dear sir,
Actually the problem is not finding the solutions but finding the right solution.
Worth members of XDA Forum post a lot of solutions for a particular problem and thus newbies like me get even more confused... So it definitely takes some time for us to come to a point when we are able to get the desired results.
Sometimes, we are not able to clarify our queries.....
As in my problem only a Modem was required while I was looking for EFS solutions!
After Flashing the MG4 modem my battery life has become worst. I don't know if it is because of the Modem.. but whenever my phone is on airplane mode then the battery remains at the same percentage but while on network my battery keeps on draining without even texting or calling

[Q] Upgrading to stock rom

Ok guys here's the deal, last year I rooted my friend's s3 (international, india, i9300) because there was no available update to android, so I flashed purelook HD 8.0 (android version 4.1.2), now he is saying that his phone has become very slow so he wants to go back to stock
so I downloaded "INU-I9300XWUGML4-20140107141249.zip" but after downloading this I saw that it is for android 4.3 (new official update).
So my question is should I directly flash this in ODIN (android 4.3) or I should download older official update before flashing new update?
If it's a full, multi part stock rom then it wouldn't be a zip. Odin can't flash zips.
Suggest you read the basics in general forum, sticky threads, before you do anything else.

yeah I know odin doesn't flash zip's, I quoted the file name just for reference as there were two firmwares updates available for india, one INS another INU on doing some searches I came to know that they are locked and unlocked updates, kinda same, you can download any one.
is there any number I should match before downloading...we do not have contract phones in india, just retail so I was confused therefore I downloaded the unlocked one
back to the point, I know that I have to extract it first, there is a file inside it, named "I9300XWUGML4_I9300ODDGML4_I9300DDUGMK1_HOME.tar.md5"
so maybe now you can help me out, whether should I flash it or download an earlier version and flash it prior to flashing this one...
So my question is should I directly flash this in ODIN (android 4.3) or I should download older official update before flashing new update?
Its your choice but as said read and understand the basics first .

Well I know how to flash roms/firmwares via ODIN, I know I have to check my counter too if it is not zero than I will have to reset it
so is there anything else?
I'm just asking this because I don't know much about s3 but I had note and I remember it had some issues regarding upgrading to a ice-cream sandwich version, something related to 'safe kernel' many other things...
and even I tried searching for basics, I didn't find anything else other than this and if there is something I am still missing then please kindly link me to it or just answer the question, IS IT SAFE or not?
