I'm about to buy a new phone to replace my aging and decrepit A885 OG Droid. 3 devices currently have my attention: Note II, Droid Razr MAXX HD, the Motorola DNA, all on VZW.
There's one thing I have been unable to find about these devices, and that's how the SD card is handled by the OS. I've learned, from the Asus tablet I have, that virtually mounted SD is a HORRIBLE idea, and want to make sure my new phone has directly mounted SD (so utils like App2Sd function properly, and system storage uses all available internal storage).
TL;DR: Does the DNA mount the external SD as a virtual or directly as a physical storage device?
cross-posted to RazrHD, VZW Note II, and VZW DNA
It symlinks the physical nand as as card you can't physically access it.

Hmph. Knocks that off the list. Thanks for correcting me.

Will the HTC Rezound loose apps to sd card when we get the ICS OTA update? I noticed many of the new ICS roms on other devices no longer support apps to sd card. I would hate to loose that. I think it may be the new phones that are coming out with ICS as their default software.
Thanks,

RedSox got hammered. Pitching sucks.
Might actually have something to do with those phones not having external sd cards.

Samsung Galaxy S3 has exterior sd card and you can not put apps to sd card. I have the T-Mobile version in Pebble Blue with 32 gb of int memory.
No apps to ext sd card.

That's cool. It was just a theory that seemed to make sense, to me at least.

Is there any way to upgrade the internal 16GB storage to a 32GB? I'm not referring to the external MicroSD card.
It might be possible i think samsung use SD cards as their internal storage.
Yh of course there is sell ur 16gb version nd buy the 32gb version

ORRRRRRRR you can try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234
is it even possible ? unless there are motherboard with 32 gb for sale ?
This is not possible for the conventional person unless you have access to some pro level reflow ovens and flash chips.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
You need a laptop hard drive, super glue and a hammer.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
So is that basically a no, without serious mods to the phone?
Dude the internal flash memory is what's called smd in electronics (surface mounted device). Basically they are miniaturized semiconductor components with tiny solder pads which can only be joined with specialized equipment.
It's impossible to mess with it at home, that's why I sprung the extra cash for the 32gb version.

This is indeed a very interesting notion since the galaxy s3 was my very first smartphone and android I thought to myself that with the 16gb internal SD with an extra external SD card it should suffice but I was very wrong as apps only install in the internal SD card and I'm almost at my limits since I have alot of HD games and apps installed.

Just buy a 64 GB micro sd card.
Have a look at Directory Bind. This should solve your space issues (assuming you have a micro sd card in your phone).

Lot less hassle rooting than even thinking about opening up device and messing with that...

Yeah but there's a mod to swap the Internal and external SD cards so you could buy a 64gb card and have lots of app storage. Its also a matter of time before the app2 SD gets sorted for s3
Oh well no worries, I can live with it

Yes I want to swap my external sd as internal sd, So I can have much bigger space on my phone. As you know the phone recognizes only internal memory as phone storage not the Sd card. I saw a video toturiol on YouTube about Galaxy S3 but I'm looking for SGH-1717.

Thats the ticket Brad.....
Based on that script, it moves the extent of what the OS will allow.
System data cannot be moved, but application data can.
Even then, some apps will not run from external storage....
Good find .....g
Swap External w/ Internal. Success!!

Hi abakarxda,
I just tried this yesterday, and it worked for me:

I hope this helps.
I'm going to clean install Beans 17 and use the sd card swap option; however, I'm trying to figure out what precautions I should take or what I should do to prepare and not lose data. I copied all my card over to my PC.
Should I delete everything on the card now or just let it on there and complete the swap?

As long as you have everything backed up, and there are no instructions telling you to have a empty SD card when you set up Beans with SD swap, you should be fine. I don't think having it full or empty will cause issues either way. Just make sure you read all the instructions and info on SD Swap in Beans thread.

Hey guys, I'm running Beans 17 with sd swap and I've been installing all kinds of apps with no problem but I noticed that the memory is being sucked up from the sd card and not the internal memory where I have 30 gigs. Weird, because without sd swap apps are downloaded into the internal memory and with swap downloaded to external sd where the measly internal memory is now. Kinda thought everything will be downloaded to internal all the time. How is everyone elses downloads going?

Thats supposed to be how it works. It is supposed to trick your phone into thinking your external is your internal I believe.

Let me clarify. If you go to applications manager, it only shows memory equal to your phone memory; however, for the new user, we'd think it'd show whatever is left on your sd card--now that your sd card is "internal" memory. So, instead of it saying I have 30GB left, it says I have like 1 GB left out of 11...or whatever the total is...
If I go to storage under settings, it shows phone storage as 64 and sd storage as whatever the phone storage amount is.

What I was getting at was that it tricks the phone, and the app market, into installing into the external card by making the external show up as internal to the app that are being installed. Thats my understanding of how it works and seeing as how i have never used it I know nothing of how it shows up just the general principle behind it and why it works the way it does. I may be completely wrong too, thats how I have seen it explained.

Samsung is pushing out a 360mb update to snapdragon S4's that shaves off 0.8gb of "other" storage and allows you to add apps onto the SD card. Any chance a dev could implement these features into our ROM's one day?

The latter.
I'd rather have it native over some directory bind script.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I mean it just makes all of your storage internal basically instead of having stupid restrictions on what the external card can hold. I know the SD swap does a very similar thing of course.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
Using an app called Folder Mount, does this but allows me to move the actual folders not just the apps (Which usually isn't where all the data is anyways). Works for pretty much any app that has an install folder stored on the internal storage.
Some apps I use this for include, both GTAs, Max Payne, Asphalt 7, MC4. Pretty much does all the work for me after the initial setup.
That would be pretty good to have actually.
. If the OP is using the phrase "adding apps to sd card" literally then I am inclined to believe this is nothing like Sd swap or directory binding since i am assuming here you would essentially move the app to sd card after the fact rather than installing it to external straight from the market or anything.

Thread cleaned,
Be respectful of others, if you cannot do that, log off. Not need for it in a development thread.
Stay on topic in here, troll at your own peril.
The article was on CNET or Engadget; they didn't specify if it gave you the ability to download to the external sd right from the market or if it had to be moved after the fact.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
The article on android central said it could install directly to the sdcard, provided the app developer allowed it. That's a feature the app had to have built in.
