Hey guys,
After this easter morning disappointment from the software update, I have decided that its time to root my phone to get my Jelly Bean. Therefore, I want to ask this community, what would be the best ROM based on what I want from my phone? Basically, I want it to still feel stock but not have to deal with the At&t bloatware and I want to be able to use 4G LTE. That's basically it. I have heard of SnowJB and Nocturnal but I am not really sure of the differences between them and feel free to suggest others. Also if I used the incorrect terminology, I apologize I am a n00b that wants to learn.
Thanks for the help,
yidavs
I'll definitely recommend SnowJB is you're looking for a stock feel without all the extra bloat. I used that for a while, until CFX became more stable as an AOSP rom. Unlocking is simple now with freegee now in the appstore. Just be sure to read and root before using it. Backup your efs prior to flashing stuff with it and place it somewhere on your computer. It's a small chance of that getting messed up, but with a backup you will be fine. Any questions you should be able to get a faster response in the IRC channel.
Battery on CFX kills my nexus converted OG to the point I might use my backup OG for that reason alone.

SnowJB is the only way to go if you want a fully functional Jellybean ROM. I've been using it for a few weeks and it's as problem free as any ROM I've used before. Definitely recommend it!

Another vote for SnowJB. If you want to upgrade to Jellybean, but want all the features working, its the only option at the moment as the 4.2.2 ROMs are still working out all the issues/missing features. It's a great ROM. I've been running it for like a month with zero problems.
The xperia 4.1.2 ROM is rock solid as well.running it with mysterious' kernel. No issues.

SnowJB
Another vote for SnowJB as a daily driver, but if you can do without a camera, go for CodeFireX unless you've done the N4 conversion. CFX is fast, clean, and excellent battery life, and SO many more features and options. Including controlling your media with the volume rocker, Widgets on the lock screen, and custom unlock targets.

Hey everyone, I am going to be trading some services (a mechanic is doing my breaks in exchange for me rooting and custom romming his lady's phone) and would like to know what your opinion is on the best thunderbolt ROMs available? She is currently on stock software and hates absolutely everything about her phone and how it behaves.
What would you guys recommend? I'm looking for functionality, reliability, battery life and the smallest amount of software bugs as possible.
Tweaked stock ROMs? AOSP? CM7 or 9? I know nothing about the thunderbolt community and would greatly appreciate any info you can give me.
Thank you everyone

Leaving it on a stock rom unless you plan on maintaining the rom for her..If she has no idea what shes doing then dont cause a headache for yourself, with techs its nothing to change out a rom, or if it gets buggy, well you get the point... the best thing would be a factory reset, or check the memory on the phone she prob has to many apps, install the apps from the sd card to free up the memory cuz im on a stock rom and its way fast, great battery, most of all the battery issues are from apps..just trying to save you a down the road..
I would go to the dev section of this forum and look at the ROMs and see what catches your eyes its opinion over opinion when saying stock is better than custom tons, I myself like custom roms because you can choose a wide variety of tweaks etc etc

LiquidRom 3.2 and use Rom Tool box built in to download pink theme, use built in theme chooser and apply theme, the get a pink keyboard skin and appy. Btw you can customize splash screen and bootanimation to her liking with Rom Tool box too. No bugs for me.

You want no problems use zues.

Definitely a stock based ROM, like Zues. AOSP's battery life isn't as good as Sense (to no fault of the amazing devs of course).
I also suggest Imoyeson's leankernel 5.1.0GB in battsaver mode. Amazing performace with amazing battery life.
I also recommend Zues. ran it for a month straight no problems. only switched roms to see what else is out there
BAMF 1.11 with kernel+++ and turn off task manager at startup. Since I've installed the latest version of BAMF I've had zero fcs, great battery life and good speed. I'm a tech all day long with Windows PC and understand little about behind tor scene android functions. BAMF seems most reliable and low maintenance. Remember every phone responds different to the same os. It's just like gas every kia responds different to bp gas.

I just ordered an Amaze for $250 and I am pretty stocked, coming from the mytouch 4g. I noticed that a lot of the roms appear to not have data working. Is there a complete ics rom you would recommend to flash for the first rom? Also how is stock ics rom?
Sent from my Dark Unicorn Resurrected v.2.5 using xda premium
Stock rooted most stable and is the best rom for this phone imo. ARHD was my favorite deodexed.
If you want mods and a different aosp look.. you can do all that yourself on one of the two above with flashable mods and nova launcher.
Its probably best to read up on all of the ROMs and try them yourself to make your own judgement. This thread will just lead to a few devs shouting out their own roms and their fans following close behind. I know this because this isnt the first time a thread like this has appeared. Im sure u searched before posting though so no worries

go stock rooted, or ARHD. The phone on ics is pretty darn fast

I cant wait to get this phone. It is miles ahead of the Mytouch 4G yes I will read up and research and ask questions if A) can't find something or more likely don't understand what is being explained. Any gingerbread roms worthy enough to look at?

For ICS, I'd suggest ARHD (as previously posted). However, for Gingerbread, I'd suggest BulletProof. BulletProof is what I was running prior to migrating to ICS.
Thanks everyone I would definitely flash ARHD first that is after I get a feel for stock rom. I also found the the Amazing guide stickied on the dev section to really nice. I hope to see it explode pretty soon

I tried most if not all ROMs. If you want ICS I say go with NRGs stock Rom with faux new kernel. Been my daily driver for a few months now except the kernel that just dropped. If your gonna be on GB then I also 2nd Bulletproof.
Patiently waiting for some CM9 or 10. Which looks like we'll probably have by August, September.

Whether you use energy with or without stock look, it is the rom I keep going to.. I never have issues with it. I debloat the hell out of it mind you, I don't leave rosie or any other sense feature, but as far as stability, battery, etc is concerned, it is my default rom of choice, and I have tried them all pretty extensively.
If you get the latest build you have to make sure to increase the minimum clock speed to 384 which just requires two little edits in the init.post_boot.sh file in the system/etc directory.
And despite what GG said, even tho I love him(no homo), I am not a fanboy by any means..
I use hd revolution on sensation and amaze. On amaze, it will give you out of box ui but in back processes, lot of optimization were made.

Used ARHD when I had my amaze 4g and never used anything else, that was when it only had GB though, now that I got a GNex, I'm still using ARHD, one of the best Roms out there, no problems whatsoever, stable, and Mike is an all around great guy who puts much care into his Roms. (Not to say that others don't, I've used so many Roms its unbelievable, just like everyone else, and all devs are AWESOME!!!)

My word isn't really needed at this point, but **** it - Android Revolution HD (ARHD), just like the others have said.
Trewyy
Engery Rom is thee best choice
Energy Rom is the best in my opinion. I tried both clean rom and ADRHD or whatever it is call. I like Energy because it is Stable. Battery life to me is awesome, especially when I use my hotspot, Bluetooth and playing Poweramp plus I do play games and etc... Anyways that what I would recommend. Personally choose whatever fits your needs and do not go based off what we say. Remember the most popular rom for the Amaze may not be the best or work for your phone. Not all phones are created the same.

Hopefully this is the right section for a question like this...
I'm currently running stock ROM, s-off using Dirty Racun method. I'd like to switch up to a custom mod because I'm frustrated by the lack of customization on stock. I'd like to know which of the 2 ROMs is most like stock and basically, which you prefer and why. Not looking to start a war thread here so keep it civil, options more than welcome though. I'd like to make use of the following features so if one doesn't have them, please let me know:
Wake-on-volume
Overclock
Thanks in advance for your input

well, then you should go with the viper, the wake on volume was in cm10.1, but buggy so they removed it
EDIT: actually the wake on volume is working on cm 10.1 now in the latest unofficial release 0406
And if that wasn't a deal breaker would you still make that recommendation?

I love sense personally but always love to try new flavors of android, overclock is done with both, by modules and kernel on cm10 and by module on sense, however a sense kernel release will take place next week by me
And about wake on volume, if it is necessary, use viper

I personally like CM right now, though both are excellent ROMs in my opinion. I just prefer the overall "feel" of CM and I love a more stock experience...I find Sense a waste of resources that could better be placed elsewhere. though you can opt out of it with Viper. That being said, I would give them both a try and see which one suits you better! They are both amazing, it's really just a matter of preference...

What are best practices for switching back and forth between CM10 and Viper? NAND backups, but what about Titanium? Can that be used to preserve SMS messages? Or is it too unreliable to do titanium backups between the different types of ROMs? Thanks for your input.

you shouldn't have a problem with titanium between the 2 roms just make sure you fix app permissions
PACman, paranoid kicks ass
I have reached that point where I no longer care for the benchmarks and stuff. I don't use my phone for intense gaming or app usage anymore so as long as the ROM is smooth, can do some multitasking briskly and has no to little bugs, I am ok.
Currently, my favorite is CM10.1.2 because it can do gapless playback in Google Music and I am a sucker for it! I am a fan of PAC-rom too but I am not sure if it is stable for our phone.
Go for CM10.1.2 with a 3.0 kernel for the best of both worlds - stability and the latest Android (mdm series CM 10 is great).
Personally I prefer the CyanogenMod ROMs (more official to get deeper) because you can customize the hell out of them. They do have the overclocking you are looking for, and yes, in one of the recent updates, they put in wake-vol-buttons. I like it because the themes are just awesome and the support is excellent. Nightly updates and nightly fixes (for the most part). There are somethings that I would like CyanogenMod to fix such as the external SD card usb mass storage not mounting on PC. That is a major drag. That is the only thing that I can think of right now that I hate about CyanogenMod. Hope this review on it helps!
So been thinking about trying a custom rom but not really sure since there isn't much to pick from so I'm looking to see what everyone else is doing and how they like what they are getting from there current setup?
I would just give it a week or so and I'm sure some more stable releases will come out

shockingly I'm using TouchWiz. My only complaints with it are the inability to flick away desktop icons, no play store in the top right corner, and the folders are annoying. Why not just leave the stock folder function?
I use Apex Launcher overtop of TW which gives me the customization i want but still maintains all the Samsung functionality that is really pretty cool. After coming from AOSP Roms on my Gnex, its kind of a nice change of pace.
I rooted and removed some bloatware and verizon stuff I knew I didn't need.
Installed novalauncher and called it a day. I plan to stay with the stock kernel. I might be a little jaded coming from having to reformat my last few phones every few months once I started flashing roms.
I am completely stock, no root yet. Just testing her out to see if I am going to keep it first. Battery life and signal issues plagued my last two phones, so those are what I'm testing. So far so good.
Can someone explain what TouchWiz is? I don't see it anywhere on my S4. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt.

Rooted but still on stock ROM, using GoLauncher on top of TouchWiz, Swiftkey dark theme keyboard, haven't removed/frozen bloat yet (but will soon, just rooted yesterday). I'll be eventually loading a custom ROM but waiting out the alpha/beta builds.
Really enjoying the two finger swiping/gestures, though i don't use them much. Comes in handy on the notification bar for quick toggles, and Toucher is a pretty cool app especially when themed properly.
Not a fan of all the notification clutter, but thats just my OCD kicking in.
SmartStay/SmartScroll stopped working after day one, not sure why, but seems kind of a hokey feature anyway...
I agree, the tweaked folders are annoying, enjoyed my previous ICS folders using DeckReloaded on my EVO.

So I tried it. It booted into the OS just fine, but the phone process was force closing so bad I couldn't get though the setup. I would type a character then it would freeze. Just lost patience, lol. I had backed up my APN but could not get through the setup to restore it.

Ok so I have a mdk version of this phone and I want to put a solid rom on it what one is the best do you think of the non tw ones? And another stupid question if I flash like dirty unicorn does it lock down the bootloadrr?
There is no right answer to this... the best rom is the one you like the most, so you need to start flashing and finding this out for yourself.
Flashing roms will not lock your bootloader. Only if you take an official update will it do that.
what the above user said is correct, the best ROM depends on the user. However, i have a rooted mdk gs4 and i was using stock for quite a whole and happy with it. after a while tho, the slight lag and other annoyances got to me so i decided to try a rom. I should note that this is my first android device, I am a long time iphone user and jailbreak expert, so i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. I decided to try Hyperdrive recently and I absoultely love it. its basically a hybrid of touchwiz for gs4 and note 3 with all of the bloated BS crap removed and lots of customization options. it is much faster and solves some of my gripes and was easy to install. I also chose to try it first because it was similar to what i was already on so it was a good first ROM choice in my opinion. it was also super easy to install. I am gonna try CM11 when it gets released to see if I like it, but for now i would recommend you try hyperdrive

All the aosp roms bring something to the table. The touch wiz roms for this phone are great as well. There are fan boys for all of them.
See what you like.
That said. I can tell you which developers I'd follow. I say this based on user support and rom support, and listening to features requests, and a quality product. or a combination there of. Sbreen94, nitroglycerin33, dubbsy, beanstown106 , Bdogg for DU is starting out right. Andybones is also tops but I haven't seen as much of him lately.
Edit: forgot DaMadOne is is doing nice things on his aokp kang.
With the big aosp custom rom's you have a ton of peer support buy typically @ the mercy of whatever the larger team is working on in terms of bug fixes etc...
