Can't use my SD card after format - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So basically my 16GB SD card was working fine but I was missing a few gig due to an old apps2sd partition I had for an older phone s I copied everything off deleted the ext partitions and reformatted to fat32 but now settings force close if I go to storage and recovery restarts if I try to format it? Any ideas?

Download the sd formatting tool, format it with that in your pc. If it still won't work then bin the card.

"SD card blank or not present" but SD-apps run fine

Hello all,
I used a windows-xp to flash nAa-kernel05 and upgrade to miniCM7 2.1.3.
Once done, the phone booted properly. My SD apps work .. but the SD card does not seem to be accessible. In gallery it says: SD card blank or not present. Music player says no SD. Storage settings show no SD ..
It seems that the Fat partition is messed. How can I fix?
I'm not sure if it is related to the miniCM7 update.
Any clue?
i had similar problem ..
try to format your sd card with this software:
Code:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
I do not want to format, my data is accessible via card reader.
The sd card was running few hours ago.
I did the following (with no luck)
1- Using windows, fixed errors in fat32 partition
2- Missing "/system/xbin/parted" copied with pernissions
3- Reboot many times, wipe cache partition and dalvik
4- Edit the default capabilities xml file at the SD root, edited <boot> to have a low-case R after unlocking kernel.
Still cannot find the solution for my problem

Exactly, and also try to partition the sd card with minitool partition wizard, and then install apps in your sd, they might work better with an ext 2 partition, thats what i did, cuz my cards 8 gig, and fat is not an option.
I just tried to upgrade to 16 gb card and my phone did not like it. Random shut downs, apps did not run etc. Do I need to format the card in a special way before I can use it? I did a full clean install before trying a new card.
It may just be a dodgy card though... It works fine with my old 8 gb card.

SD card not working

Since I installed a lot of roms I wanted to completely wipe my I9300 so formatted the external sd card and I accidently used partitioned the sd card.
I formatted it and after that it it does show up on the file browser but it says there are 0 bytes available also when I click on the storage menu in settings it crashes the settings app.

Formating sdxc card to fat 32 using only an android app

Hello I saw he video how to change int sd with ext sd so the phone thinks it has more space and so on... The truble is I need to format sd card to fat 23. And life does wonders - my card reader suddenly stopped working and I cant conect it to pc and format the card. Any way to go around that? Maybe there are apps that can do it in the phone? Coz I cant find them.

if you are rooted you could try to format the card in CWM, not sure though if it is 1) possible and 2) if it is then formated to Fat32 or the system you had on it before.
You could also try to connect your phone to your PC and format it that way.

Hello, ty for taking the time to answer, but i tried both of those things, both in pc and cwm i can format, but i cant select how to format, i dont know if it formats to fat or to fat32 or to something other. Besides after trying to format i tried to use the int to ext sd swaping (the thing that i wanted to do in the first place and the reason why i need to format to ext 32) and it didnt work so i believe that formating without selecting TO WHAT to format doesnt work.

What about TWRP? Try to flash a kernel with TWRP and see if you can mount it there. Just try it

I thought my sd was broken but i repaired it by bootice. Before computer cannot format it to any format exfat too. I think something is missing in file system on my card.

[Q] understanding TWRP

I'm having trouble adjusting to TWRP's
naming convention and mapping.
Its internal file manager has refernces
to sdcard, internal_sdcard, external_sdcard
and USB storage. sdcard is where it ended
up putting its output which seems to be
/data/media/0/. How do I tell it to use
the external microsd card as its data
target?
I have a brand new VZW HTC ONE MAX.
I so far have run Firewater s-off
successfully, (rumrunner didn't work),
reset my tampered and locked flags,
flashed via fastboot TWRP recovery
and let TWRP install SuperSU for root.
To remove the red warnings on the
splash page do I have to use a
custom hboot?
After that I rebooted to recovery
TWRP and went to run a backup.
TWRP wasn't able to locate the
external microsd card, I'm guessing
since it decided to breakup the
backup files, it was expecting
FAT32 not NTFS. I'll reformat it
and see if it can find it then.
Thanks
As far as I know you can't use micro sd in recovery.

Depends on the time you downloaded TWRP. It's been re-uploaded with working sdcard support for a while now.
Ok, so with a FAT32 formatted microsd card and
a current TWRP I should be to write the
files on the external sdcard, not just the
fake one?
Thanks
If you have a 64G card itbshiuld be formatted exFat. Its going to be a pain getting it back to that properly if you formatted to anything else. ExFat has a specific tiny block of memory kept at the beginning of the card. Just formatting back to exfat doesnt work properly without that block.
Will exFAT work correctly, except for hboot?
I know NTFS doesn't, TWRP couldn't see it.
I could buy another and clone the whole thing including the
unallocated space. Hmms Is there a something special
in written in that space, or just a partition boundary issue?
I did wonder why the partition started where it did?
It is fixable using a partition tool. It *may* havr been the official sdcard format tool (google it). I just remember it was a pain for me. Ymmv

I'm running TWRP 2.6.3.0, on a Sprint One Max, using a Sandisk Extreme 64GB external microsd formatted as FAT32. I've never had an issue with TWRP not recognizing my ext sd.
