Restrict Web Access in Chrome - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the thread states I am looking for a way to restrict access to certain websites through Chrome or the device as a whole. My company is releasing devices (non-rooted) that have 4g access and need a way to limit what the users can access. Anyone have any ideas?

Any parental control app should work. Though I'm sure if you buy as a business partner from a corporation they'll have a way to have a "limited" profile

I didn't think about the hosts file. Would this work on a non-rooted device? I thought the hosts file was in /etc/hosts?

Get the cwm flashable zip of the stock rom of your phone
extract the host file.
mod it.
push it back into the zip.
Flash the zip.

Hacking android games- on PC [Q]

Hello, basically I am wondering what is the best program to edit .DAT files ( the typ of file that is [mostly] used by android-game dev's to save stored data of the game )
and edit them,
also i was wondering what if I can't find the game/app map when connected to USB?
> I want to do it on the PC because I have the one X and are NOT going to root it.
Regards!
In order to access those files and write on them (edit them), you need root.

Please read again, I can access them through my computer easily, in fact I have them open now on HxD editor, but I need a good program to edit these .DAT files with.
Then you need to push those files to the phone, which requires root

An app cannot write there under normal circumstances.. For writing there you need root, but games doesn' store their savegames there.
Let me put it differently.. if an app doesn't ask for root, all files it creates can be accessed by adb.

This is why non rooted phones cannot cheat on games, they cannot access the files there.
When you go into app settings and look under each app, there is a section that says data....x MB. And you can clear data. That data is stored under /data/data

Check again. All user installed apps have folders there with some associated data. Some games don't have their savegames there, others do.

Indeed, and the games I'm wondering about do have the save game in the folder, simply access-able when I connect my phone (One x) to the PC.
Any how, how could I open these files, with what program?

The save games' files are usually XML files. You should be able to simply use notepad (or any other text/word associated software) to edit them.

Hex editor, and messing around to see what each adress does. Every game dev uses their own liba and stuff, there is no universal program to edit those files.
Its like writting your own secret code inside a book, someone else might open it, but go figure out how to interpret each line.

It sure is. Hell, there even is a forum wide XDA announcement about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=530
You might try enabling USB debugging... Found under developer options. This is in all Android devices enabling varies by release. Try checking out Setting - About Android - build version click that 7 times and it should enable it in main settings. It has already been said you really should root. This is usually the first step to getting root. I know nothing about HTC, but chainfire root has worked for me many times, from Sony, Moto and Samsung. Google your make and model + root +xda dev.
I myself have used Hex Editor, but it looks like garbage to me. Good luck and please give an update if you find a template or app
Interesting. I'm trying to hack my own game. Hope I can, because it obviously is possible...lol.
Hacking HTC devices is hard as hell, i have htc one and i can tell
The root needs clock work mode
And this CWM needs bootloader and the bootloader needs hellava time and experience
I just dont have time to do all that sh1t, isnt there an easier way to root stupid htc's, or at least to hack games on pc
Or hack the games without rooting
And dont tell me to use lucky patcher because its bullsh1t
Thx for reading

Blocking ads?

I can't seem to find any apps in the Market that black ads.
Does anyone know how to do it?
I am currently running CM10.1. I didn't have any ads running ViperROM 1.2. Is there any way to block them?
I think the play store took away apps that could blocks apps. If I'm not mistaken you need sideload it

Just to have options, here's one for AdAway.

Download f-droid that is an alternative market for open source apps. It has ad-away which is the best one(dont get adblock its a stupid method and always needs to be running)
I am using host file blocking, check this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098

I was actually wondering about that Zone. The host files I've modified on the PC have always been related to using software features.
For ad blocking are the host files the same regardless of if its on a desktop PC or mobile phone, or is the one we use identical to desktop browsers?
Since mobile sites have a different m.example.com URL often I didn't know if the host files were different.

HOST file to my knowledge is the same across all platforms including Windows, OSX, iPhone, Android and probably Linux. The same file can be used for all of them. My HOST only blocks like ads.example.com so yes if you wanted to block a m.example.com you would have to add that but wouldn't hurt say Windows.

[Q] Adblocker don't work after 4.1.2

Heya guys,
I had 4.1.1 till few weeks ago, after I updated to 4.1.2 Wanamlite ALL adblockers I try don't work... I used Adfree before and had 0 Ads in apps.
Now, no matter which one I try I have ads in there.
I had to install another version of adfree which removes only a few ads but not all, I tried adblock plus, adaways, and adfree....
My phone's rooted as usual, i let them acces internet via droidwall...
What is the problem ?
Is there a general change in 4.1.2 hich prevents some ads from being blocked ?
Thanks in advance.
Gram
All should work. What if you turn off droidwall?
Adaway worked for me on 4.1.2 and 4.2.1 leak. I then moved to 4.2.2 aosp and it still works

Heya,
Droidwalls logs are empty, i set things up a year ago so doirdwall isn't it. plus adfree and all the others adblocker apps always have all permissions.
So should I simply try another version other than 4.1.2 or why the hell isn't it working ? *sigh*
If you don't know why its not working, how can you rule out any cause?
Logic says remove as many variables as possible. I asked what happens without droid wall. Did you try it? I ask because you didn't satisfactorily answer the question.
Please rule out droidwall first. Then we talk more.

Adblocker plus (not crapy Play's one) works fine here with AFWall+.
It can't block all adds, only those coming from external add networks, not those natively brought through the application's server (mostly games I guess).

Yeah its the same for me.
I am using the same aps I used to use before 4.1.2, I was using the older version of adfree which was working perfectly. No inapp ads nothing.
Now i had to update the adfree to another version and the inapp ads are not blocked anymore. I mean those built in.... because those aps cannot acces the internet anyways.
The got blocked before I am just wondering why not anymore...

Thanks. If this is from /system/etc (or /etc) then it rules out the apps. Your hosts file has 25000+ entries (more than mine by about 4000)... so it would definitely appear to be a rom issue. The app is doing its job by writing to the hosts file.
I trust it has standard /system permissions?

Hey, yeah prolly... It has root permissions. I was using the older wanam rom, it was working pretty nice....
What I am asking myself is: some ads seem to be built into the ap itself, since i don't allow any of the games or apps i use to connect to the internet. So ofc some ads are always there right ?
But then I realize, hey I was using all those aps before and none of those ads were there before...
What u think, should I change the rom ? can u recommend a good one ? I was pretty happy with wanam tbh...
cheers.

If you can tell me a few games to test for you I can let you know....
Since the hosts file simply blocks web hosts connecting in from the internet, it can't touch ads that are embedded in the game that works when the internet is off. So yeah, anything that still works with no internet cannot be blocked.
When I use touchwiz, I prefer wanam

First game: Third blade
In this game if u start a level, u get a small banner ad at the center top of the screen. Now, the game is blocked and cannot access internet. yet It has this ad. Here comes the twist though, When I had my sgs+ back 2 years ago, and had adblocker i didnt have that banner ad, so whats deal with that nowadays ? Simply different version ? (upgrade with integrated ads) ?? The sgs+ had 2.3.3 or so...
Second game: Jewels saga
If i start the game now I get this stupid fullscreen ad which I have to press away. I used the same game in 4.1.1 with wanamlite and adaway and dindn't have this ad, so how come after the upgrade, under the same circumstances this ad now appears ? Please check if u get the fullscreen ad at the start..
I deleted a **** load of games so I only have these 2a atm...
Thanks alot.
Sincerely

ADs..

I have a rooted Galaxy Mega I recently bough, running stock ROM 4.22. I am upgrading from an original Galaxy Tab 7 (rooted and still running Gingerbread.. working like new).
Like on my Galaxy Tab 7 I installed Adaway on the Mega, but, seems I cant get of any ads at all. All apps display ads even the Mega is rooted and Adaway properly configured. Am I do anything wrong or need special configuration or is there a knows inssue about removing ads with this phone? Any other app that works or workaround for the problem?
Aside from this problem, the Mega is a great phone! Extremely happy
Thanks in advance for sharing any advice and input of this

its probably the 'webserver' doesnt stay on, the moment you exit adaway its turns off by itself

Positively does not work. Installedl and uninstalled several times the app (and several versions) and never works.
.. in fact I hear with stock Samsung ROMs & Android 4.22 there are issues with Busy Box that can cause this.. but I also updated my Busy Box and no fix..

My Rom is based on stock and has root and busybox and is adfree, Can you just edit the hosts file?
View attachment hosts.zip This is the actual text file, just rename without .zip and copy to /system/etc, making a backup first.
This is a few days old but one I restored and then updated, I am hoping you can do the same.

In a way yes, but not completely. You are blocking sites and using a proxy bypasses the site address as everything is server from the proxy IP address.
Adaway webserver would remove the ads and then show the page complete, a bit like Opera Mini.

Those Pesky Ads

I was wondering if anyone knows what file in a decompiled apk/app that needs to be removed to stop the ads. The ads program info appears to be all over the apk/app I have tried to remove just the ads files, but the apk/app force closes upon activation or boot up ? There has to be one line of code that can be removed that disable the ads without crashing the apk/app ?
