[Q] Galaxy S2 Adventures Log and Queries - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Phone Stock Info
Samsung Galaxy S2
Model : GT-I9100
Android 2.3.3
Baseband : I9100DDKE2
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE8
Build : GingerBread.XWKE8
Note: Kernel changed after rooting.
I started my journey on the custom rom and custom kernel after two year i just wanted to share my journey and need your help where i am feeling a bit confused.
1~3 April 2013
Was on Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3
Rooted it using Proper Insecure Kernel via ODIN 1.83 + S2Root.exe
Flashed ClockWorkMod Recovery 4.0.1.4 via ODIN 1.83
Took backup of rooted rom using CWM 4.0.1.4
Took backup of everything using TitaniumBackup Pro to externalSD
Currently : On a happly rooted Gingerbred 2.3.3 Stock + CWM 4.0.1.4 :good:
I have downloaded several ICS and Jellybean Roms specifically made for the S2 and i would like to esp try the JB Custom Roms.
I have also downloaded stock roms for GT-I9100
ICS 4.0.4 Stock GT-I9100 [For India]
JB 4.1.2 Stock GT-I9100 [For Nordic Country as the one for India is not there]
Queries
Scenario 1 : Update Gingerbread Rooted To JellyBean Custom Rom [4.1.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2]
My query is can i directly flash the ICS / JB Custom Roms to my rooted [Gingerbread 2.3.3 Stock + CWM Recovery 4.0.1.4.]
using CWM Recovery
Query for Flashing Procedure for the the JB Custom Rom
[Very Important and i am super confused and stuck here]
Will it flash the respective JB Custom Rom [be it 4.1.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2]
OR
Do i need to first install Stock JB Firmware/ROM for GT-I9100, Root It , Install CWM and then Flash the JB Custom Rom.
Query for the Flashed JB Custom Rom
Will the flashed JB Custom ROM have the root
Will the flashed JB Custom ROM have the CWM Recovery
Do all Custom Roms have its own kernel
Do all Custom roms also have CWM Recovery or will flashing a new Custom Rom install a new updated CWM Recovery or i will have the same CWM 4.0.1.4 no new CWM Recovery will be there.
Can i restore my GB backup TitaniumBackup Recoverydata to the new flashed JB Custom Rom
Scenario 2 : Downgrade from Jellybean 4.1.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.2 Custom Rom To Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3
Is this possible ?
Note
I already mentioned that i have taken ClockWorkMod Recovery Backup of my rooted Gingerbread 2.3.3 can i directly use that to restore the Gingerbread backup while i am on a JB Custom Firmware. I can restore the rest of the data using my backed up data in Titanium backup.
I also have downloaded the Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 Rom for my phone can i flash this while i am on JB Custom Rom and go back to Gingerbread Stock.
Thank You for your Patience :good: and any help would be great.

1. You can flash the custom JB ROM directly via CWM (no need to flash stock JB). Just be sure to do a full wipe (factory reset) before you flash JB.
2. Yes, custom ROMs are rooted, and have CWM recovery (some may have TWRP recovery). They have their own kernels too. Ur current kernel and recovery will be replaced by those in the Custom ROM.
3. You can restore ur Titanium backups to the new ROM. But I would not recommend restoring system app data. Also, some restored apps may not work properly.

Yes, it is possible to downgrade to GB, either by flashing stock GB firmware, or restoring a CWM backup that you made.
P.S. Official stock JB firmware has been released for India today. And do not flash ICS 4.0.4 (there is risk of eMMC Brickbug issue).

Still, I would recommend you avoid posting such long and exhausting questions. Most people wouldn't bother reading them all. And most of the questions you asked are already answered in various posts in this forum.
I too had the same questions when I started out. A few simple searches on XDA answered them for me..

Hi Neo.
Thanks for all your answers.
And i will keep this thread updated with my journey.
Heading to download the stock JB rom for India just for archival purpose.
Will take a backup of the CFA folder in the root directory just for safety purpose.
Stock Roms are supposed to be flashed using ODIN [PDA] and
Custom Roms can be flashed using CWM Recovery right ?

Nope. Factory reset only deletes user data like downloaded apps, contacts, messages, call history, apn, settings, bookmarks, calendar, etc. Formatting SD card or external SD would delete ur CWM backup.

Why do u need updated CWM? U can use the one u already have.
I would advise against using ROM Manager, as many people have reported issues while using it to flash CWM.

Log April 4 2013
Jellyback 5.2.0 and Back to Gingerbread 2.3.3
Installed Jellybam 5.2.0 (JB 4.2.1) successfully
The JellyBam Rom had its own ClockWorkModRecovery 6.XXXX , took a backup of the installed rom.
It was eating my battery like anything, also the external memory card was no more in the original path "sdcard/external_sd".
It was sort of draining my battery at super speeds.
Lucky for me it has Clockworkmodrecovery after taking a backup i restored back the old Gingerbread Rom and prayed that it gets restored.
Back on my Stock Gingerbread for now.
Query
Now suppose if some rom has TWRP will i be able to restore my CWM Nandroid backup using it.
Also If some rom has TWRP can i replace that with CWM somehow ?

And do not flash ICS 4.0.4 (there is risk of eMMC Brickbug issue).

I checked my phone using the "eMMC Check" app and it does say that my yes for the brick bug.
Is this brick bug associated with ICS 4.0.4 Stock and Custom Roms only or other 4.0.X roms as well.
Also does this brick bug associated with any Custom JB Rom flashing via CWM Recovery.

Brickbug is only for STOCK ICS 4.0.4 firmwares with STOCK kernels. Once u switch to a custom kernel and CWM recovery, u can be safe.
As for ur previous query regarding TWRP, I will need to read up on that..

And you can't research this stuff yourself why exactly ? One day Immortalneo is going to get sick of spoonfeeding you like he has been over the past day, and nobody else is going to do it. What are you going to do when that happens ? (Hint: You'll need to do what everyone else here does & search/read/learn for yourself. The sooner you do that, the better for you).

Agreed , Thanks everyone , will figure it out.
I will post queries which are really causing a serious problem and am not able to figure out.

How to figure out before flashing a custom rom if it has CWM Recovery or TWRP.
Do any custom roms have TWRP, i read most of the roms description pages but i did not find any mention of CWM/TWRP.
I would want to stick with Custom Roms having CWM Recovery only.

That's because most ROMs come with CWM. TWRP is usually flashed separately.

[Q] flashing kernel + PA: will it work?

hello. I'm on stock 4.1.2 (XXLS8), and have root (got it with that method of flashing update.zip through stock recovery). now I'd like to get ParanoidAndroid. afaik, I have to have CWM to install it. so, is it possible to flash siyah kernel (it includes CWM, right?) through mobile odin, and then flash Paranoid? I don't really care about which kernel I have, so maybe there are also easier/better ways to achieve what I want? thanks.

Yes, it is possible. And after flashing PA, u will end up with the kernel in PA Rom, and not the siyah u flashed.
U can also use temporary CWM zips (available on xda) to flash PA. Then u can skip the step of flashing Siyah kernel.
Backing up ur current rom is also a good practice, in case u end up with problems after flashing...

thx for answer, seems clear now now I'm curious, which recovery I'd have after installing PA... CWM from siyah would be kept?

Recoveries are linked to kernels. So u would get whatever recovery comes bundled with the kernel of PA rom (u can find it out from the PA thread).

[Solved] Whats my next step

Hello, first off i have read through loads of pages, been trying to figure things out for days, but the vast amount of info gets a little confusing, and just looking for a little more help, I have s2 i9100P XXLPH, running stock ics 4.0.3, i couldn't find a cf anywhere for it as the one i tried didn't work, it just stayed at the start up screen, so i downloaded the stock and flashed through Odin to bring it back to normal. I then managed to root it using ExynosAbuse, i then installed busybox. (not sure if i got it from google market or on this site) anyway I want to start trying a few roms but want to know the best way to go about this for my phone, Can i just download a SiyahKernel if so, should i download the latest SiyahKernel S2-v6.0beta4, also does this Kernel install cwm for me or do i need to download that and install it separately as i will need to make a nandroid backup. Sorry i know all this info is probably on the site but as i said it just gets confusing with reading so much stuff, i'm not new to custom roms as i put custom roms on my San Francisco and Huawei Ascend G300. Just need a little kick in the right direction
hi, i tried reviewing a bit about your device. i am using SGS 2 I9100.
http://www.droidevelopers.com/f364/11689-galaxy-s2-variants-i9100-i9100g-i9100p-i9100t-i9100m.html
you can click that link atleast to check the difference.... have you tried the DORIMANX kernel for ICS support.... have you read about the brick bug of SGS2, better to be safe than sorry man. atleast try to find the eMMC check apk and install it to your phone before flashing a kernel. though kernels for S2 now have the eMMC_cap_erase=0. atleast try to check if you have the super brick bug on your current rom. mine just had one before you know.... it was resurrected by JTAGG deadboot option.
http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ - here is the list of the kernels of dorimanx... find the one that has ICS support....
then if the kernel worked. flash the rom you want...
note: if you chose to flash the CM10.1, dont forget to download the dorimanx kernel 9.xx, after flashing the rom JB base, flash a JB kernel.

U can flash siyah v5.0.1, and CWM recovery will be installed too. Or u can flash Dorimanx as it also comes with CWM. It doesn't matter which, because after flashing a custom ROM, the kernel and recovery is replaced by those included in that custom ROM.
U can make a nandroid backup after flashing siyah or dori, and before flashing a custom ROM.

And please note that only stock 4.0.4 firmwares with stock kernel are prone to the eMMC Brickbug. I u do have 4.0.4, you can flash a custom kernel like Siyah, and ur safe.

Re: Whats my next step
You can flash any I9100 ROM/kernel, you might lose NFC capability by doing it.
You've got a lot of Custom ROMs Threads in the Original Android Development Forum. You can check other users perceptions on the ROM in cuestion.
Check out the nuke scripts threads, those scripts may come in handy for clean flash as it wipes previous Custom ROMs leftovers.
It's always good to have Mobile Odin installed, enables you to flash stock ROMs very easily and in a safe manner.
You can get confused if you read a bunch of thread about a bunch of subjects.
I suggest you go from specifics topics to specifics issues related to that subject.
Q&A is a great place to learn about any issue you can get.

[Q] Flash Rom with Stock Recovery?

Just rooted my I9100 - now wondering if it is possible to flash a JB rom to it using stock recovery?
Forgive my lack of knowledge, used to working with just Nexus Devices but doing this on behalf of my GF.
Is it as simple as flashing a rom, or are radios etc required to be flashed? Or are they included in roms or separate etc?
Currently on 4.0.4, rooted with Supersu, and stock 3e recovery. Not sure on bootloader status or whether samsung even lock them?
Thanks a bunch!
If u want to use recovery for flashing - u should install custom, f.e. Philz
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
download corresponding version.
Modems/kernels are included in roms, just make a selection what u like.
But the most important thing - READ THE FAQ MAIN THREAD before flashing/or use search.
Good luck and dont brick ur device bro.:good:

Brick Bug Warning(Read about it ICS 4.0.4 stock kernel prone to bricking) what to do
1.Flash philz Kernel via Odin
2.Then Flash any JB rom through cwm
3.If you want rooted stock experience use ROMs like NeatROM, Omega... Bla... Bla...
4.If you want pure stock only experience download firmware from sammobile and flash via Odin as it will be in a tar file.

Adding to what the above members said..
We can simply flash ROMs and they include radios also. We can flash radios separately too if needed.
The S2 has an unlocked bootloader and hence doesnt need to unlocked seaparately.

From what I read above, I understood this:

You need CWM to flash custom ROMs as well as root.
You can get both by flashing a custom kernel.
Which custom kernel? You can find suggestions all over Q&A.
You ca. use any custom kernel with a custom ROM but It'd be wise to stick to the dev suggestion, on the custom ROM thread.

OK, will do.
I think it is the Kernel I am using....3.0.64-CM-ge8aa6a7
Is the recovery tool built into the kernel? If so, can anyone recommend;
a) a different kernel?
or
b) How I can flash to the latest Revolt 4.3 ROM as I have only been running the Revolution ROM until his new build was released (Needs TWRP to install)
Ta muchly.
Yes it's built into the kernel. Dorimanx 9.xx will be good for 4.3 rom and also I'm guessing cm10.1 4.2.2 rom. It's cwm but should install that rom and run it. Also Apollo kernel has twrp if it's a must and seems to run 4.3,have a read of the thread.
