high mobile data traffic - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks,
EDIT: OK, part of Android OS might have been VoIP traffic, not figured out where the rest comes from.
I have a high mobile background data traffic (1,25gb Android OS, 181MB Opera Background traffic) imageshack.us/photo/my-images/718/20130404101621.png in just 1day! Besides that my droidwall log shows kernel and Android System activity (all synching and backups disabled, no push notifications, no facebook or similar) imageshack.us/photo/my-images/690/20130309104720.png
Running latest carbonrom v1.6
Android OS traffic occured after switching SIM cards (maybe it was previously there as well but didn't recognize due to low data limit)
read similar posts on the forumhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443239 but am not willing yet to down and upgrade the firmware yet
Any ideas?

bump! it must be gremlins sitting in my phone and having a good trash talk with Santa or do you have any better explanation for this traffic?

ALL joking aside have you tried full wipe/factory reset of phone. Could just be a rogue app? Got to be worth a try if you not already. Failing that get an app from play store that shows each programme and the data its eating. Good luck.
Here this looks like a good one Data managment App

Google+ App mobile data usage is HUGE

Hi guys,
For some time now I've noticed an increase of my mobile internet data usage. Since I installed ICS on my Galaxy S I'm able to see why:
I've turned off every sync feature of Google+ since the moment I installed it. EVERYTHING is disabled and it still uses a huge amount of BACKGROUND data. What does it do? Does anybody have an idea?
Thank you!
try using cache cleaner app from the market....it should work fine
Wow that is a problem. G+ is becoming so intrusive on every platform it is on, like the automatic upload feature.. Thats a ridiculous feature! Who would want EVERY picture they take to go to a public social network? Is it possible that you have not disabled that feature and all those uploads are eating your data?
Also, what will clearing cache do to stop background mobile data usage Wilfred?

Okay good to know! I will remember this when/if I experience the same. Thanks for the explanation.
I've signed out from the app and blocked the background app sync...this means no more google plus for me. Since december I've cleared my cache so many times.

Google Maps location "My Timeline" data all messed up

Google Maps has location tracking data under "My Timeline." Historically it has been super accurate, showing the roads I used even when driving long distances. I also always use Google Maps. Ever since I switched to the Mate 10 Pro, this data has been straight lines across 20-40 miles of distance and highly inaccurate arrival times. I thought it was just Google, but I switched back to an Essential Phone and it became perfectly accurate again. I'm back to the Mate 10 Pro and I hope it'll work now, but I'm not holding my breath.
I often use the departure and arrival times in My Timeline for work data, so I'd love if it worked. Any thoughts?

Did you try to accurate your GPS with any GPS app on the store??
I have same experience. I believe it's to do with Huawei battery saver. Pls let me know if you find a solution

I have not, but I use Google Maps extensively and never had even the smallest problem with accuracy. Always follows the road accurately and instantly recognizes turns (unlike the built in GPS in my Lexus sometimes). The "My Timeline" data is often just a straight line between my house and my destination, even if it's across a bridge.

That's unfortunate. Will do.
Same here, whatever i tried didn't solve it (even clean cache and data).... Even tried disabling battery optimization settings on Maps and Google Services... Nothing. I also have indications that is has something to do with multiple google accounts (i find some locations being reported in some of my other accounts). Are you on a single account? But yes, same problems, straight lines, lost stops, no routes, getting stuck in one location for hours etc...
im only on one account. is there a bigger huawei users forum than this one and the huawei subreddit?
i feel like theres so many questions with no answers and nothing being done about it

What for? Any particular reason? I have put everything to manual in Launch settings, and also almost every program to Ignore Battery Optimization. Because manual battery optimization is buggy right now.
Settings>Battery>Launch>Manage automatically all apps
In other thread here in XDA I've user said that putting chrome to be managed automatically did the trick.

I checked TimeLine today and since 27/01/2018, journeys are recorded with the correct level of detail again! Google Maps app last updated 04/01/2018 and I'm still on C432. No idea what changed to start TimeLine working again properly but obviously I'm really happy. Can anyone else report that journeys are being correctly recorded again?
Nope no change.
I've got the same issue. I tried all of the tips and tricks I found online to no avail. Mine just says No Visited Places. ONce is awhile it does show a place. It pisses me off tremendously. Google Timeline is a great tool to remember where you've been
If you can't remember where you've been then you have bigger problems than Google Maps not working properly!
Personally, I try to turn everything OFF that records location(s).

V30 update to pie, lost all homescreen configs and no black navigation bar

Hi,
this update (V30 to pie, recieved today) just destroyed all of my home screen configurations (folders, arrangements, widgets, links to websites) -> really annoying.
Also my navigation bar cannot be set to black anymore -> any help?
system seems very laggy, hope that sorts after all app updates are through.
this is not a nice expierence.

From what I noticed, the navigation bar can be set black with a black theme, however, it still becomes white in certain apps (eg. Chrome).
I didn't see a way to make it black universally.

After a big update like from Oreo to Pie is always very advisable to factory reset the phone. You'll be surprised.

surprised of how awfull it is to restore an android phone?
there are so many apps (like home banking) that are linked to the phone and cannot be backed up... I try to avoid that. But I guess it is time to switch to Samsung S10 soon was hoping to wait a little longer till the prices go down.....
but the pie update also seems to drain my battery even faster. what a mess

Well, the battery drain is just another reason to factory reset and it's kinda ironic that you'll have to set your new phone anyway.I told you to factory reset because I solved a lot of problems on my phones through the years after major updates. It's not mandatory but very advisable. At the end it's your phone and your will to do it and set it again.

it is probably what I have to d. but it sure makes it easier to move away from a 15 month old phone.... I just didn't expect LG pushing me away. I was loyal for some time, and I really think this is one of the most beautiful phones of its time; but it sure does not perform well (anymore).
is there any "small" cache reset that will not delete everything?
in case it is interesting for someone:
Last SOT test from a few days ago (before the update) was 4:45 with normal use, mostly indoors, which is not great, but good enough, since I use my phone alot and sometimes charge 2-3 times a day.
will try a regular test with pie in a few days, but I am too busy to have it under similar conditions...

a clean install is actually difficult; (as well as to switching to other brand phones)
- my messaging apps loose all there messages (some have manual backup)
- banking apps loose there unique keys -> need to be reauthorized with the bank
- two factor auth apps need to carefully be restored
...
of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)
I will go as far as wipe cache partition i/o factory reset. Every phone has it flaws at some point.
sure.
its just bad that there is not a streamlined backup method; LGs "mobile switch" is a mess, and gets stuck regularly on messaging apps with many files(?)
best results with preinstalled apps was actually with Huawei/honor; they seem to work quite well (but I don't like there aggressive power management)
I don't like to reset a phone before I have everything setup in a different phone (2 factor etc...) because I would hate to loose data and money.
so now I either get a cheap crap phone; or another LGV30 (cheap as hell at the moment, but getting old), or a new samsung, which I didn't plan on before autumn and new phones released....

I had the same struggles you have.
Ultimately I had to give up and switch back to Android Messenger. It backs up all messages. For 2-factor authentication I use Authy so it can restore my codes from the cloud. But you are correct, I use Android on my Chromebook and setup a 2nd two factor method (email) in my accounts before I reset my phone. I'm annoyed by games, I had to restart so many already even though Google Play Games promises to save the progress. Hope you find another way.

This is pretty much mandatory on any device. When flashing a new OS zip in TWRP, it's always a clean install. 7-8 and 8-9.
Even if not rooted and take an OTA, you either have to let the update settle or just factory reset. I've seen MANY people throughout the years on XDA complain about the newest OS version.
The general reply will always be factory reset.

I noticed that the PIE update fixed issues with the camera; that pictures would not get saved, when closing the app (too fast) after taking a picture.

You are misinformed because pretend this is a new phone you are setting up.
How would you go about that? You would use the same two factor authentication on the new phone. You can't say two factor authentication wouldn't work on new phone or nobody could ever get a new phone...
Plus, there are SMS Backup and restore apps. WhatsApp has cloud backup if you turn it on Many messaging apps like Hangouts sync across different devices.
If you're rooted, there's TWRP and Titanium Backup -- where you can restore data to ALL apps.

1) I use Nova launcher and periodically export configuration backups to Gmail or Google Drive. You can also store them on your device, like microSD card. At any point in time, on this phone or another, then you can download and restore those home screens/desktops. I have 5 screens with apps arranged by most use (home screen), spreading out then by categories.
2) A little too late now, but Google also makes backups of your home screen configuration and when you Factory Reset your phone or buy a new phone, and you first sign in, Google will ask if you wish to restore that most recent configuration remembered from your most recent device. However, by this point in time, Google has now backed up the "new" Pie configuration you do not want. This is why you should have factory reset at the very beginning.

Does anyone recognize this as spyware?

I have a good friend who believes her husband, they are separated and divorcing, has some kind of spyware on her phone. A lot of her claims as far as strange things happening with her phone, seem kind of impossible but her ex was involved in some high level activities in the Military. For one, she says she can factory reset her phone and all the strange things pop back on her phone. The first thing I looked at was what apps on her android were using the most data. I will include a picture of it but I personally have never seen anything like it. Many of the apps that are shown are "restricted".
Now, the app store for example. She claims she never installs new apps or really even looks around on the app store however the data use on it is insane. She also has NO work stuff on here and has no idea what osulogin is. Does anyone have a clue??
osu login is a preinstalled system app.

Have the phone reflashed to its original stock rom. Change Google account password.
Turn off wifi. Get off social media. Never leave anyone use your phone out of your sight... if at all.
I doubt the ex would risk his security clearance and job like this. The DOD has a vast array of spyware tools... I've seen some in use.
You upload and scan any app you want to with online Virustotal.

Question Spy/malware removal

Is there any kind that actually works? I keep fishing around on Google play and everything is either old, doesn't work, or is full of sh*t, or a combination of all 3.
Welcome to XDA
If you're running Android 9 or higher simply do a factory reset. There are no known rootkits that can worm out of the user partition, once that data is wiped so is the malware.
Don't reload it again after the factory reset.

Which would be how? Would I need a app or something for the pc? And if so do you have any recommendations? I have the mixsilver file manager on my phone (pixel 6 "Not pro"). Would there be a way I could find it thru there? Also my device is not rooted. So would I need to root? I'm sorry if this gets on your nerves. If so tell me, won't hurt my feelings. I'm literally a noob at this stuff. I've been trying to teach myself and just do trial and error but im getting in over my head and don't wanna accidentally brick my phone or worse.

With Avast or AVG Antivirus you can do a pretty good scan of your apps, even system apps if you want.

Chrome ****tin out 3 gigs of data a day. I have unlimited so it's not that big of a deal but still.....and some of the options I had in settings like "permissions, enable/disable, clear data/cache" that I know for a fact I had not too long ago are now greyed out or nonexistent. Also sometimes when I bring up "location" thru the settings menu everything is supposed to be "off" but there's 2 or 3 that look like they are switching back to say "off" as soon as the page shows. 1 of them outright takes several seconds to display any "on or off" setting at all. I've found a "Verizon" system app on my phone, some kind of Samsung telephony thing. And it seems like I can input a change to settings or something and when I look at my phone in the morning everything I had set up is back to it's previous settings.

For what it's worth, the Verizon system app comes with the phone in case you use a Verizon sim.
If you end up clean flashing or factory resetting, I would not restore any apps from backups. I would reinstall everything fresh or you could just be putting the malware back on your phone, if that indeed is what you have.

Just redownload them. Google remembers your bought apps or subscriptions in your Google account, so as long as you use the same email/account for logging in to Playstore after Factory reset you're good.
Your contacts normally are also synced to your Google Account, so you get them back also then.

It comes with the phone by default just in case you do use Verizon. Basically that app helps give the phone Verizon support, of sorts. It's disabled by default if you don't use Verizon so there's really nothing to worry about with that app.
