[Q] Xperia U upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hello, my first post in these forums. Have been exploring a bit through all the information, and I think I need some help. I am pretty experienced with networks and windows/linux usage and administration, but have been using an android phone for just 2 weeks.
I have a Sony Xperia U with Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, as it came out of the box. Any updates have yet to arrive, PC Companion says that I am using the last available firmware but I know that this is not the case as several ICS firmwares have already been published. Bootloader is locked, but can be unlocked.
I would like to flash my phone manually to ICS, using the last (or the best as recommended by you) firmware update. I would like to start with a stock rom, try rooting and than try custom roms when I get accustomed to the process of flashing. Mostly, I want to use the phone to the most of it's abilities (battery, speed, graphics etc).
I have found here that last firmware is 6.1.1.B.1.89, but I could not find it here on the forums.
First, I am in a dilemma which .ftf file to use for my phone. I have downloaded:
XperiaU_ICS4.0.4_nu.ftf
ST25i_.54_Nordic_DevStaff.ftf
ST25i_6.1.1.B.1.54 GENERIC - user_Sony.ftf
I have checked two threads in more detail:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028139
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974430
What does SI Number or ROM Location 1263-1753 / WORLD mean? My number on the back of the phone (behind the battery) is 1261-9036. What happens if I flash 1263-1753 firmware to my phone? Please recommend an ICS firmware that performs well and is applicable to my phone.
Can I use ST25i_6.1.1.B.1.54 GENERIC - user_Sony - since there is no SI Number or ROM Location there? Can I root this firmware through Flashtool OR Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v26. I would like to root to be able to delete bloatware from Sony.
I have also looked at Freexperia project, but it says there that the version is still in development and has issues with FM Radio - which is something I use every day.
Other than this, I installed flashtool-0.9.10.1 on Windows 7. I installed the drivers in Flashtool\drivers. All drivers said "Ready to use". Rebooted the PC, switched off the phone. When I connected it while holding Volume-up, it said ready to use. When I connected it while holding Volume-down, it says device disconnected. Have tried reinstalling the drivers (Flashboot and Flashmode are selected), Windows Safe Mode, disabled Microsoft Security Essentials. I went to Device Manager (as suggested in the forums) and I uninstalled "Android Device", the drivers would still not work.
This morning I remembered that USB debugging was not checked on the phone - might this be the problem? I will try again when I get home. Please provide any other tips to connect the Xperia to Flashtool.
Thank you for all replies in advance. All best.
[UPDATE]
I went to Sony's website for unlocking the bootloader. Is the Android SDK necessary for Flashtool too? Do I need the android_winusb.inf file provided there?

Thanks for all the information here.
I flashed my phone with ST25i_6.1.1.B.1.54 GENERIC - user_Sony, along with [Kernel][Sony Xperia U][March - 24] Sliding_XU [Stock][CM]
First impression is that it is laggy, much slower than Gingerbread. Any recommendations?
All best.

if u are on stock android u will hate it. Its time for u to start searching and flashing custom stock based roms... These are usually VERYY smooth... NO MATTER WHAT DO NOT STAY AT STOCK ANDROID, trust me, u will want to take a hammer and smash ur phone... Also, consider using kernels that allow u to overclock ur phone... Do not worry, if u overclock from 1ghz to 1.15ghz i dont think u will have any problem... Have been using overclocked phone for 6 months and so far no problem...

Thank you for the reply. I am using CM 9 (FXP213) as of an our ago, and I can feel the amazing difference. As I can see, CM has very basic apps by default. As it says on the CM wiki:
Optional: Download any supplemental 3rd-party applications packages for the device you wish to use. (You have to install a 3rd-party app to get the Google apps, like Gmail, Play Store, and Youtube.)
Where do I download these from? Any other resources on CM that are good for a new user?
All best.

Please list your problem simply,i sinply cant get what u mean, sorry for my english it's not my mothertongue
I think you can't update your rooted phone the normal way via SEUS or PC Companion. You need to flash your phone manually, or reset to factory state to get the official update
Simply my problem is that i want to install on my Xperia mini pro (2011) new update and installation failed. Phone is rooted and I want to install this update.

Tell us HOW you are trying and failing - are you trying to use the Sony Ericsson updater or some other tool? If so - name the tool.
If you are just trying to use Sony Ericsson's update program - called PC Companion - you need to tell us whether or not you have already installed any custom, third-party rom in place of the standard one your phone came with.
Also - since you have rooted your phone, did you do so for any particular reason - i.e. - have you installed any particular applications or customisations that required the phone to be rooted?
If not - please understand that rooting your phone is NOT necessary for normal use. Only a tiny percentage of the millions of Anfroid phones sold get rooted - it is a hack that MAY prevent your phone from working properly in certain ways - including being able to install updates from the manufacturer or service provider.
If you want to be able to safely and easily install updates directly from Sony Ericsson, unroot your phone and reset it to all defaults - after backing up any important data. Then run the update program. If you have specific apps that only work when the phone is rooted - you can alway re-root the phone afterwards then reinstall the apps - just bear in mind that different revisions of Android MAY require a different method to root and MAY require a different version of any named app.
If none of that helps - tell us exactly WHAT is failing and HOW it is failing - give EXACT details of the application you are using and EXACT details of any error messages you see on the computer and/or phone. Simply saying "it won't work" is like asking "Why won't my car start?" - impossible to answer without listing a million possible reasons.

I tried default SE update app in phone. I tried also to use PC Companion, but i am not able to connect phone in MTC mode(required for upgrade).
I think that i have no custom party ROM (Only one change I used was rooting and if there was no custom ROM i have none).
I rooted my phone for cleanup. I wan to uninstall many default applications such as Moxier, Popcap games or Wisepilor Navigation. I am not interested that something not required spent my batery. After cleanup my battery is usable 1,5 times more.

That's more useful - it appears that the problem you need to address is not the ability to update - it's the ability to connect to your computer via USB.
Please go through this in order...
Disconnect the USB cable from the phone and PC.
Go into the Sony Ericsson menu and then Connectivity.
Go into USB connection mode and select Media Transfer Mode (MTP)
Go back from the menu to the main screen.
Run PC Companion on your PC - you will get the main window showing a message saying "No Phone Connected".
Plug the USB cable into the PC and then into the phone.
PC Companion should now say "Searching Phone".
If it doesn't find your phone - remove the USB lead from the PC then unintsall PC companion. Go to the Sony Ericsson website and download and re-install PC Companion. Then run it and try again.
If PC Companion still fails to find and connect to your phone, post back - you may need to run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner to fully remove any corrupted drivers.
If PC Companion finds your phone, it will show a message regarding available updates. If updates are available, follow the onscreen instructions to install them.
If there are updates but they fail to install - post back with details.
If there is any other message - such as saying that your phone cannot be updated - post back with exact details of the message - including your current version.
One important thing to bear in mind here that hasn't been mentioned so far is the method you used to root. If you used the unlocked bootloader method, then upgrading via official path, i.e. pc companion will definately result in you failing on update. As it will brick your phone and you will have to resort to this forum for a solution. However, if you rooted using the doomlord method you should be ok cos SE won't detect the modified software when attempting the update.
Guys when this update comes out for Xperia Mini ST15?

ST15 update is in place but if it will come to your phone is dependent on your provider and region
problem with upgrade
Hi, I had the same problem (rooted phone - locked bootloader) because I attepmted to upgrade the phone ota - through the phone. It did not work but at the same time from this moment on the phone was imossible to connect in the mode suitable for upgrade. The solution is SEUS because in this program the phone connects while it is switched off and it really works.

Flashtool can't detect my X10i

A friend of mine gave me his x10i phone to play, so i decided to follow all the proper steps to get the device rooted and install 2.3.4 on it.
I have downloaded the flashtool v 0.5.3.0, but it does not detect the device. I have also installed the drivers on the system from flashtool\drivers folder
When I click Check Drivers, i get the following output:
12/041/2011 16:41:47 - INFO - List of connected devices (Device Id) :
12/041/2011 16:41:47 - INFO - - USB\VID_0FCE&PID_612E\CB511ND245: OK
12/041/2011 16:41:47 - INFO - List of ADB devices :
12/041/2011 16:41:47 - INFO - List of fastboot devices :
Another problem I have is that Debug mode is on, but the flashtool always says it is off. I tried all i could including upgrading the stock rom from sonyericsson site, but at this stage, I am ready to give up. I do not see anyone else is experiencing this problem.
Any advice is appreciated.
screw the drivers in that folder
install the legit ones from the SE webstie
install the PC Companion and it will do everything for you
then try. If does not work message me or reply here
tried it all from scratch at home on windows 7 (first attempt was at work on XP).
At home everything worked fine Thanks!
do you want Unlocking you bootloader?
try my way, its stands in my signature.
I think i was able to unlock it. In fact, sorry, I do not know what "unlocking bootloader" is, but what makes me think that I've done it is that i was able to flash Doom kernel with wifi and one of the custom ROMs on it. Also I got root access on the phone. Recovery console (CWM ?) is working too.
Correct me if i am wrong, but this is as far as i can go with this device and nothing else needed to crack/install etc.
One issue i noticed is that GPS does not work and settings are just not there, but i guess it is a ROM/kernel related question which i will explore further.
unlock bootloader
makes it a lot easier and nicer when you install a custom rom
um
use flashtool
under plugins category

[Q] Flashtool - Device connected in flash mode only 10 sec (SE logo brick)

I kind of brick my Xperia x10 (I know it's not called brick). I did root, install xRecovery and after that went straight away to install a new custom ROM. When I reboot the x10 just got blocked with the SE logo.
I tried SEUS, and didn't work saying that I've got the last update. I'm trying flashtool now, but my problem is, that now after 10 seconds it changes from flash mode to SE logo, and I can't do anything else...
Please, I really need help, I'm totally a noobie
This is the log from Flashtool:
11/059/2012 17:59:42 - INFO - Device connected in flash mode
11/000/2012 18:00:03 - INFO - Device disconnected
11/000/2012 18:00:03 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
I took the risk to try to flash a ftf file in those 10 seconds and it DID work!!!
Bless it. So, I'm gonna try to carry on with the other guides. Anyway, if you have any advice it'll very much appreciated
Which version of flash tool have you used for this? This was a bug in on of the versions in the recent past that seems to have been fixed now.
Also, which Rom were you trying to install? (not related to your problem, just asking )
The Flashtool is ver. 0.6.7.0 running on Windows 7 64 bits.
I just installed the firmware Sony Ericsson X10i_2.1.A.435_GLOBAL-GGL GENERIC 1232-9897.
Trying to follow this guide now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343 but it appears a camera with an arrow when I'm installing the xRecovery 0.3...
I was thinking to install the ThGo2's ROM because I read good reviews about it, especially about the battery life...
Any recommendation?
I have mostly stuck to stock-based ROMs. I haven't used ThGo2 ROM long enough to give an informed opinion. Right now I am using Wolfbreaks ROM with DoomKernel. The camera is somewhat crippled in the CM/MIUI roms but otherwise you could have a look at those also.

[Q] Updating X10a from 1.6 original Android

I recently got a Xperia X10a, and I noticed that it has the android 1.6 on it. I know that the newest version of Android is 4.2 so I started searching the internet for an update to android 4.0.4 at least. I discovered that the android 4 for the X10 isn't completed so I went to android 2.3 and found the site freexperia, there you can download the CM7 for X10. I'm a noob, I don't know what a kernel is and what I can cause to the phone by changing it so I need help, because every tutorial explains how to update from 2.1/2.3 to 2.3.3 or something like that. I also tried to update the phone throug SE Pc companion and update service, but I can't pass through the step of pressing back and plugging the phone in again, I do what is said to do but nothing happens and the phone just turns back on. Also i saw something about the baseband and changing it to most recent one, but I don't know how to do it, and I discovered that you can put multitoutch in the X10. How can I update from android 1.6 to 2.3? I need to update the baseband? If yes how and to what version(i'm from brazil, and I don't know if this change from country to country) What are the main differences between CM7 and the official SE 2.3 updates? Through these updates the multitouch will be automatically installed in my device? I also would like to install clock work mod on my device, how can I do that?
PS.: I read the thread about using the flashtool to do many thing to my device, and the tutorial was very clear, so if I can do what I want using tha tutorial as a foundation the process will be much more easy.
Well, I've been trying to update for a while now and I think I discovered the problem. As I need at least the Android 2.1 to start doing what I want with my phone I have to update via PC companion, but when I reach the end of the preparing step I get an error on my PC, after I turning off the device I plug it in holding down the back key and a pop up apears saying that the device had a malfunctionig and is not conect so I get stuck in this step, as the device is not recognized. Can anyone help me?
What i did with mine is rooted the phone while on 1.6 then changed the region code. After connecting via pc comp i got the update to 2.3.

Can't flash stock rom

Gonna be a long read but I'd be glad if someone could help me. Plus, it is an interesting issue.
I use stock 6.0.1 with the july update(phone model 2303, locked bootloader, no root, no recovery) Today, I don't know why, all my apps started crashing. I mean all. Dialer, album, music, whatsapp, chrome... Turning my phone off and on did nothing. I tried several times. As everything was working great a just a few hours ago (and for years before that), I thought a factory reset could fix it. It didn't. Now phone starts with that first launch set-up thing and I keep getting errors of various apps crashing and the device does not proceed beyond the initial set-up.
So, I thought flashing a rom could fix it, however I can't seem to do that. I have flashtool however when I go into flashmode I can't see my phone. I have installed the fastboot and flashmode drivers, however couldn't find the xperia m4 aqua drivers on the driver list. Flashtool detects my phone on fastboot mode, but not in flashmode. I have read the guides, still no solutions.
Any suggestions on what to do?
edit: I have found "xperia m4 aqua" drivers on Sony's website, but Windows claims they are not suitable for my device and does not install them.
SOLVED: Using an older version of Flashtool worked for me. I used version 9.18
