I've read many forums and blogs regarding unofficial CM10/10.1 work on the Motorola Photon 4G. Most of what I read indicates existing ROM's from Th3Bill and others have issues with important features (wifi/data) and in some cases could even damage hardware.
Anybody have experience with the ROM below? If so, is it truly stable?
Anybody running Android 4.x on Photon 4G with most features working? What ROM and what works/doesn't?
As you can see, I am definitely n00b (nice video during registration by the way :laugh. I did search XDA and google first but I'm really just looking for an update from any users more than anything. I have 2.3.4 now and have rooted, on Ting 'carrier'. I already froze updater.apk to prevent an OTA update to 2.3.5 which I read will lock my bootloader and prevent any custom roms.

Anything can damage your hardware.
Go and attempt the installation of ICS/JB and check if you keep GSM functionality. If not, just go back to stock, MAKING SURE IT IS 2.3.4, NOT 2.3.5, as many guides teach you to. Flash KDDI radio if in US, otherwise, don't bother.

I saw evita in the filename but device:sunfire is the Photon 4G. Not sure what it means if the filename and description don't match.
dwegiel, point taken. I don't have the time at the moment to attempt something this unfamiliar to me especially if I end up with radio problems. Since I'm on Ting (Sprint MVNO), do I need to worry about GSM and KDDI radio at all? Also, I'm absolutely certain I'm on 2.3.4 and I have already rooted.
I was hopeful some progress had been made on Android 4.0+ for Photon/Atrix but it seems the lack of Tegra drivers is either severely hampering development or may eventually kill development all together as these products age. Thanks for the replies and to the devs for their work thus far.

There are a few jelly bean roms but yeah with the driver issue it hampers development

Went to Joker's CM9
For those who land here wondering if I ever explored the cybik ROM above: No...and I won't be either.
Using various XDA threads I unlocked the bootloader, flashed clockworkmod, Installed Joker's CM9 (beta 0.8.1) unofficial, and found gapps-ICS-signed.zip on the interwebs and installed that. I kind of jacked up my phone by accident and found this was the better solution instead of trying to fix the stock GB.
For anyone looking to move from GB...I would recommend this. I've read a lot of threads about various issues in current CM10.1 for Photon so I was hesitant to try those. CM9 feels very similar to 10.1 and as far as performance the issues on CM9 I've found: MMS requires GoMMS Pro app, no camera video (stills are fine), Swiftkey "Flow" causes force-close, and battery life seems to have decreased from GB (despite downclocking to original 1Ghz).
Pretty much everything else works...Bluetooth, GPS, calls, SMS, Chrome browser. Despite my original concerns, this was clearly the way to go. Mods you're welcome to close this up.

Hello All,
I want to start off with a very big thank you to everyone in this community, everyone here has been very helpful to someone who is a general noob to HTC-Android devices (last HTC I owned was a TPII).
With that out of the way, I've had my Rezound for about a week and I love this phone. It feels great in the hand, has a gorgeous screen that is second to none, and an amazing camera that I'm happy to walk around with in case I need to grab a quick picture of something. Truly, this is a top notch device.
The problem I'm having is that after a week of owning this phone, I'm ready to leave stock. I was settled on CleanROM ICS for the time being until CM9 came out, but then I did some reading looking into CM9 which brought up a few questions.
1) What is S-Off and why is it important? Coming from a Droid X, I thought the important thing was an unlocked Bootloader. Why are other HTC Phones "S-Offed" and this one isn't? How does this affect ROM Development? Does this hurt the chances of CM9 making it to the Rezond (very hard to tell because they have not announced CM9 device support other than the G-Nex)?
2) What is the RIL and why is it important? This seems to be a problem amongst developers.
The main reason I bought this phone over the G-Nex was the SD-Card slot, the camera, and the screen. If development of an AOSP or AOKP is going to be lackluster because of the issues above, I still have one week to return the device and go back to my X for the time being. I will admit, I'm loving 4G, but I'm going to have this device for 2 years; I need to make sure I can get as much as I can out of this device.
Thank you as always for your answers!

The 2 questions you have are very related. What it means, from what I understand, is custom radio developments. Also referring to your first question and your concern, that's what we are waiting on. To not rely on a leak for custom roms and to get an official OTA to base the roms off of, which refers back to your 2nd question if this device can't get s-off capability. We already have a way to flash custom kernels & roms, so at this time, s-off would just add the functionality of creating a custom radio.

it's more of nodding radios and not creating them. the only advantage is possibly better signal(depending on location, prl and tower) which leads to better voice quality but since this is high end as it is it might not even make a better difference even with possible data speed increases.

It sounds to me like an excuse not to develop on this device if this is really something stopping us from a solid AOSP or AOKP build.
I'm really torn. I want a Sense-less ICS ROM, but I really love this phone. I have a week left before I can return it. I suppose worst case I could steal my wife's upgrade in May and give her this phone if we don't see development start picking up.
Unrelated, I'm starting to think this device will never see a solid 5.0 build. CM9 isn't even out of beta and official device support is still showing CM7 devices.
I guess it's a tough decision. At least my wife is willing to take this phone.
The radio isn't the issue. The RIL in android is. I don't know of any android devices that have needed modded radios in order to get AOSP working. There is a working build of MIUI with 4G working... but it seems like the dev wants to get it perfect before he releases it. Once that is done we should be able to get CM9.
But by all means though, if you don't like sense, get a nexus. It is possible nothing will ever be released though so don't hinge your plans on it.

So con247- Do you think there is a chance that an ASOP ril will never be developed?
I guess my question is- how is the rezound>RIL>sense different than rezound>RIL>ASOP? If that makes sense?
It is possible it won't ever happen, but I have 99% faith it will be completed soonish.

Seems like an odd thing to buy a phone on the expectation of AOSP. I'm pretty sure we will see a solid AOSP ROM before long though. Not sure how development is going to pick up much more than it is. We have a ton of great ROMs that these awesome devs have been working on tirelessly since before the unlock was even announced. It's only been four months since the phone came out. The development has been moving at breakneck speed! The lack of flashing unsigned radios has no bearing on ROM developing. Con is dead on. Patience folks.
I'll preface my post by stating that I'm fairly certain that no stable ROMs yet exist for this device; the only thing I've seen anyone running is CM7, and that still appears to be in development for the E-739.
That said, I'm coming to this phone (temporarily) from an HTC Sensation, which I love dearly. Going back to Gingerbread from a stable ICS ROM is frustrating, to say the least. The interface feels very dated, and I'm not a fan of the dock that LG implemented for the device. I'd like to be able to select which applications are in the dock, as with ICS. Ideally, I'd like to find a compatible ICS ROM. Based on hours of searching, one doesn't exist, but it can't hurt to ask.
So: has anyone had any success getting an ICS ROM on the LG E-739? Or perhaps a passable Gingerbread ROM? I really just need to rid myself of the ludicrous amount of bloatware that currently inhabits my applications folder... Thanks in advance!

Hi there!
So I've been searching for the newest and rom that works 100% (as of today) for my Motorola Droid Razr. I know CM has come out with some good roms, but I can't keep track of all the different roms that are out there. More specifically, I want a rom that works 100%, no bugs, no nothing (for the most part that is)... To my understanding the ICS and JB roms have some problems... maybe I'm wrong though? I've read I may have to downgrade to Gingerbread in order to get a rom that works 100%, BUT again, I want to ensure I'm not missing something. Can someone direct me?
Yes, I've searched this forum, other forums, blogs, news sites, etc... BUT I want to ensure I get the newest and best working rom (not the NEWEST JB rom - unless that works 100% - but the newest rom that is best working).
Thanks so much!

Awesome! Thanks so much. I'll check it out. Is Eclipse what most people are using?
Yeah, I wanted to get Cyanogenmod, but I've heard that the new updates are kinda buggy (no camera, etc...)
Yeah, Eclipse is probably the most popular ROM for RAZR. The Gingerbread build DEFINITELY was.
Also, apparently the camera and everything works on CM9 as long as you download the right version. I haven't had any experience with it though so I couldn't help if you chose it.

Oh, and I've tried to find CM9 and AOKP for the Droid Razr, but to no avail... Well sorta.
I was going to post a link, but XDA Developers won't allow me to because I don't have 10 posts yet...
I found one that says CM9/AOKP (leak rom), BUT I don't understand what they mean when they say I "leak rom"... I think it means that ICS hadn't been released yet when they released this rom? I don't know... And although the site is rootzwiki.com, I am hesitant in loading it onto my Razr because it doesn't actually say it's for the Razr, AND I can't find CM9 for the Razr anywhere else. I feel like these are for the .181 while I'm running .211...
I can't find anything for AOKP that doesn't seem like it's too old to try. It just seems as if everything is outdated... I don't know if I'm looking in the wrong places? I don't want to mess up my phone by installing a ROM that is too old.

CM10
I'm on CM10 now as stated in the earlier post. It's super smooth but I don't think it's ready for daily use.
Will look into eclipse though.
Boohoo, Eclipse is only for CDMA. Mine's a GSM.
Just remember, you are currently on ICS. You can't leave ICS.
It is a one-way street and there is no way to flash gingerbread without having some major problems.
I use Eclipse and I would highly recommend it.
Have a look here http://www.droidrzr.com/
there are a few more roms here that i havent seen elsewhere

Currently running CM9 now; there are some bugs for sure but all main features work.
There have been a number of threads started here asking what is the best ROM for the Evo 3d. Those threads are not allowed in the Evo 3D forums and this one is not intended to answer that question. What it is intended to do is help users that are new to custom ROM's on the Evo 3D get some idea of what is available and what might fit their needs based on what they think they want. Then they can try the ROM's that interest them and make a decision about which one suits them best.
If you want feedback on ROM's that might work for you please supply as much of the following information as you can:
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have (CDMA/GSM, Evo 3D, Evo V, Evo 4G+)
2. What ROM are you currently running?
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF?
4. What is important to you in a ROM (features, customization, performance, battery life, etc.)
5. Do you plan to run a custom kernel to OC/UV or for additional features like USB host?
6. If you have a preference between Sense and AOSP ROM's please include that.
7. Indicate if you are looking specifically for a GingerBread, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean based ROM.
8. Must have features that don't work on all ROM's like Wi-Fi tethering, WiMax 4G, and 3D camera.
For people giving information and advice in this thread, please refrain from stating what you think is "the best" ROM since it is up to each user to decide that for themselves. And most importantly, please don't get excited if someone else doesn't appreciate your favorite ROM since we want things to be civil so we can keep this thread open.
Thanks to the mods for being willing to give this a try.

I'm transferring this information from the Q&A forum for sparticuz so he can get some feedback here.
I'll start by saying that if the phone is having touchscreen problems you might want to flash the RUU for the Sprint ICS stock ROM to make sure it's not hardware.
You will have to relock it before running the RUU, then HTC unlock it again and flash a custom recovery, and then you will be able to flash custom ROM's of your choice.
Given your preference I would suggest you try the JB custom ROM's that are in active development, which includes a variety of CM10, MIUI and AOKP ROM's in the Development Forum. Most of them have working cameras at his point (though not 3D). None have WiMax 4G yet but it's being worked on.
You might also want to try some of the Sense based ROM's like SOS M that are mostly "de-Sensed" to remove the bloat but have everything working and still offer the look and feel of AOSP based ROM's.
ramjet73
It's running stock right now. I was thinking about doing a reset to factory, but I also wanted to address the finicky proximity sensor and the freezing at the same time. I was hoping for something that is stable at this point, I won't be 'flashing the latest nightlies' on it or anything. What would be the best fit for me for a stable ics rom, i don't care if it's sense or not, where 4g and camera work, (again, i don't care about 3d).

Is it for you or your wife?
Because honestly if it's for your wife you may just be better suited to stick with a sense rom. There are a few ics ones that run smoothly with no issues and even some that are made to look more stock Android like.
I only say that because, unless she is hard core like most people on here she may not truly want bleeding edge, just wants it to always work. Although I consider cm10 stable for myself and have been using it as a daily, it would be far too unstable for my wife. Does that make sense? I have been through situations like this with my wife while she was on Android, I finally gave in and bought her an iphone.
Running MeanROM ICS at the moment. I Have the Sprint Evo 3D. I care about 3D (display and camera), Wimax 4G, tethering, HDMI out, speed, and stability. I have s off. I don't care about Sense because I run my own launchers and widgets. I also use Link2SD because the phone doesn't have enough internal storage.
Any ROM suggestions?

Some ROM's that come to mind given your requirements are SOS M, which you may have tried already, the d3rpICS Bareback version, and the Senseless AOSP version of SolidROM.

I agree about SOS M as it is basically just MeanROM without Sense. I also think that Common Sense AOSP and Desensification (both by beneath a burning turtle) are worthy contenders to add to ramjet's list. Both have most of the sense stuff removed as well.
Good thread Ramjet73. Since I don't dig around and actually try different roms (I read about them when I can), I will post here for some feedback.
Currently:
1. Evo 3D CDMA (Sprint)
2. MeanRom ICS v2.6
3. Rooted / S-OFF / 2.89fw & Hboot 1.58
4. My ROM Priority Order: features, performance, battery life
5. Running Athx 3.6.6a-MR, for OC/UV at 1.62Ghz, Sweep2Wake, & USB OTG (OTG is so cool!)
6. The only thing from sense 3.6 I have kept/like is the Weather Lockscreen with its App Shortcuts and Caller ID. (ADW Launcher Ex)
Looking for:
7. I am interested in a solid Jelly Bean/CM based ROM if it's available.
8. My must have features beyond the basics that I like from MeanRom (4g and 3d Camera not req'd)
- Full Data Roaming
- WiFi Tether support (Need for tethering the HP Touchpad with CM9)
- Exchange ActiveSync "Sync While Roaming" can now be enabled including push (update schedule) while roaming
- HTML message format unlocked in Exchange Mail settings
- Roam Only option in mobile network settings
- init.d support
- LeeTweaks (or similar non controversial version/features)
- MHL (TV out) support (may give this one up temporarily)
I keep expecting to see something that makes me want to trade the features/performance/dependability I get on MR 2.6, but haven't gotten the impression that JB development for the 3D has hit that milestone yet. Please redirect me if I missed something.
Thanks

Good thread Ramjet73. Since I don't dig around and actually try different roms (I read about them when I can), I will post here for some feedback.

Wow, that's a tough one.
To be honest, I still haven't found anything better than MeanROM ICS, especially when you consider the roaming and Outlook features, along with the other fixes that Mike (mikeyxda) made to the Sprint ICS base. JB ROM's are still solving camera, WiMax and MMS issues, and I don't think they have even started to address features like roaming control and Outlook customizations. Agrabren's Disarmed Toaster CM10 ROM is probably the farthest along on the Evo 3D, and an update is expected soon that should narrow the gap between AOSP and Sense ROM's for our phone.
Cool ICS and Common Sense both offer some things that aren't integrated into MeanROM ICS (Google Now and other Jelly Bean features, custom kernel, enhanced YouTube) but as you already know those features can be added to MeanROM ICS with a little extra work. The d3rpICS ROM (Sense and de-Sensed) is another option to consider, and one of the few with ongoing updates available via SVN, but I haven't checked its features recently.
As far as AOSP based ROM's go, there are a bunch of new ones recently released, but development is mainly focused on camera, MMS, WiMax and other basic functionality, with hardly any discussion of roaming and Outlook features.
I still use MeanROM ICS as the daily driver on my primary phone, so I'm not really the best one to answer your question about alternatives, especially AOSP based options. That's why we started this thread so hopefully someone who does use an AOSP based ROM as their primary will jump in.
BTW, my favorite JB based ROM so far is lens_flare's MIUI, mostly because I've always enjoyed the feature integration and themes that MIUI offers, but that in no way addresses your priorities.
Thanks for the inquiry. Hopefully it will get this thread moving again.

ramjet, i need your help
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have : CDMA
2. What ROM are you currently running? : Viper3D_02Nov12_1459_r218_s
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF? YES
My Phone cannot gain root access
can you solved my problem? thanks!
Hello,
1. What model of the Evo 3D do you have (CDMA/GSM, Evo 3D, Evo V, Evo 4G+)
CDMA, Sprint Evo 3D
2. What ROM are you currently running?
SOS M
3. Is your Evo 3D rooted and/or S-OFF?
Rooted, yes.
HBOOT 1.5 S-ON
4. What is important to you in a ROM (features, customization, performance, battery life, etc.)
Stability, battery life
5. Do you plan to run a custom kernel to OC/UV or for additional features like USB host?
No
6. If you have a preference between Sense and AOSP ROM's please include that.
AOSP. Since I use Go Launcher anyways, I'd prefer not having the bulk of Sense
7. Indicate if you are looking specifically for a GingerBread, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean based ROM.
ICS or later
8. Must have features that don't work on all ROM's like Wi-Fi tethering, WiMax 4G, and 3D camera.
4G and wifi tethering are required
3D camera (while I rarely use it) isn't something I'm ready to give up. So I'd prefer it to work.
My main concern is I haven't updated my firmware ever (because I'm S-ON). So I'd like to use ROMs similar to SOS M, that use a kernel compatible with my firmware, hboot, etc.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Thanks for posting here. I was thinking of this ROM by Gruesomewolf. It is sense 3.6 so everything works, but also has a desensification option in its installer.

I already mentioned Smooth Criminal and Common Sense/Desensification in the SOS M thread. TerribleLie by NineInchNails is also an interesting Sense 3.6 ROM since it uses the DX Home launcher.

As far as I can see, there really isn't any rom out there that will give you Android 4.0 or higher, and that still lets you use the video cam. I'm not too big on recording but I still consider it to be a very integral part of a phone, so of course I don't want to omit on that feature.
Now, ICS has been out for quite some time and the official Android iterations have already moved far ahead, but the latest stable release I can find for Atrix seems to be CM 7. Android 2.3.7. And that was in June 2012. Seems like stone age. Is it really this hopeless or am I missing something?
Lots of apps require at least 4.0 so being stuck on 2.3 feels really frustrating. Any tips on functional roms that aren't missing too many important features?
Wow, after the huge rage over Moto deciding to leave the Atrix behind and all the dozens of threads about that, there are still questions like this?

I started using smart phones two years ago. It took me quite awhile to discover the Atrix, so you could say I missed out on that outrage. I just bought a used Atrix and had hopes of updating it to at least 4.0 but it seems difficult to achieve, despite that a long time has passed. Can it really be that hard to get the recording to work?
Yes, it actually can. Reason being non-existent drivers for proprietary hardware. Sadly this device has been discontinued, despite its great hardware potential, and there is and will be no support for it past GB. So we're left with having to "invent", figure out and piece together stuff on our own.
It's all explained in great detail in many other threads.

Okay, I can buy that, makes sense.
Well, I've managed to find at least some roms at 4.0 and above, so I will try out the most promising ones, starting with AvatarRom and AtrICS. Functionality over "better stats" and all that. And then move on from there. Taking photos and recording is something I do on a regularing basis so it's vital that those parts actually work as intended, other parts I might overlook easier.

AtrICS yes, Avatar no due to their servers being jacked up and the ROM not available (disregard if they actually did get that ROM back up). Krystian's CM9 and Epinter's CM10.1 are your heavy hitters that really are worth looking into for a 4.0 and up experience.
If you want the video and picture quality, you can use the Alpha stage ROMs suggested above, otherwise best advice is stay on GB until more kernel work is done.
Per the first complaint (see thread name), doing this thing called research would have told you what @ravilov mentioned. You say you got into smartphones 2 yrs ago. The Motorola ICS debacle happened Sept 29th-ish, 2012. Thats within 2 yrs, and that was a big backlash they suffered.

I actually found the AvatarRom, albeit not on their homepage but linked from the forum to some other download source. However, that rom didn't work out very well for me. AtrICS seemed complicated due to me not understanding the whole "vendor" thing they mentioned, so I decided to skip that one entirely. After trying out several roms I went back to CM 7.2 since that at least made the phone function quite good (except one app that seems to have a model specific bug in it).
I'll take a look att Krystian's alternative, whatever it's called. Epinter's seemed to have camera issues?
About "getting into smartphones two years ago": At that time, I nearly hated smartphones, which is why I didn't read very much about them (and therefore, I missed that "why no ICS?"-rage). Just because something "big" happens doesn't mean everyone will know about it. Yes, it's okay to ask me which rock I've been sleeping under. However, I can't point out the rock now, I've forgotten where it was.

Really? now that is interesting. I wonder if they just restored the link and didn't update their page. idk, ppl have been having issues with the creators of Avatar ROM for weeks now about getting their stuff in order. AtrICS isn't hard to understand. Flash main ROM, then flash Vendor. Its like any CM ROM. Flash main ROM, then flash Gapps. Same concept. CM7.2 (GB) is going to give you the most stability and fully functioning ROM for this device. until the 3.1.10 kernel is given the Beta status, all 4.0 and up ROMs are considered Alpha stage if they use said kernel.
Krystian's CM9 is 4.0.4 running on the 3.1.10 kernel. Epinter's is 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 running the same. all 4.0 and up ROMs will have camera issues due to the need for updated drivers. drivers we don't have b/c Moto refuses (not worth fighting for anymore) to release them.
The ICS mess happened a yr ago. but yes, I do see your point. for example, these galaxys that keep coming out. I see news about them, but I don't go looking at them or reading the news about them.
AtrIcs is somewhat a stable rom with just few issues like average battery timing and sometimes lag in screen lock.Only thing i love about AtrIcs is stock look of moto . Currently i am on Epinter's Cm 10.1 it's also worth trying especially with motoblur theme from play store it's a treat to have Atrix on stock moto look with jb.
