Can someone please explain the Safestrap Partitions? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I am using Safestrap to install the CM10.1 nightly. I had to update from 2.11 to 3.11 to get it to work with the latest nightly. The Rom is working, but I'm confused about why I have so many partitions. I would like to consolidate as much as possible so I don't get confused about where things are. When running Disk Usage app, I have
1) App Storage 280/1007 free,
2) Storage Card 1280/8196 free
3)/storage/sdcard0 1280/8196 free
4)/storage/sdcard1 6078/15189 free (i think this one is my actual sdcard, it has my music on it)
2 and 3 look like they are the same thing. But they also have Titanium Backup information in it. So when I am backing up to sdcard, which SDcard am I backing up to? The actual sdcard, or the one created by Safestrap? Both have TB information in it, and a Camera folder. I'd like to be able to set it so that everything goes to the actual SDcard instead of the one created by Safestrap.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

1) Is app storage shared between all of your ROMs (this can't be changed)
2) Is your internal storage (aka leftover space from the internal SD card from the above partition)
3) Internal SD card, same as above
4) External SD card, this is where your Titanium Backups are stored by default
Backup would 99% of the time go to external storage, if not then 2/3 aka internal storage. 1 isn't accessible to the user (normally)

What files are safe to delete in the SD card?

Hi everyone,
I just updated my Aria to FR007 and really want to have a 'brand new' phone look + feel.
I would like to delete ALL unnecessary files in the SD card & phone memory cos at the moment, I feel like something is not amiss.
I only have 574mb left out of the stock 2gb SD card. And my internal phone storage have only 132mb available space left.
I would like to save only my nandroid backup in the SDcard and nothing else. So deleting all other datas like saved apps, games, contacts, images, music and others are fine.
Please advice what procedure I need to follow as I am not familiar with what files are safe to delete. Is it safe to just do this:
Settings > SD & Phone Storage >Factory Data Reset ?
Thank you for your advice!
I would like to know this as well because out of a 8GB SD card (7.59GB) i only have 549MB remaining and i only have 1 nandroid back up and 3 GB of music on the phone.
That's a loaded question dependant upon what apps are installed. Many apps create folders and populate the sd card in some form.
Best I can tell you, mount the storage and copy the sd content to your computer. Erase the sdcard content and see what happens after reboot. Should only potentially bother 3rd party apps.

Thanks for the advice BelacNongaw.
I thought about that too but I was thinking maybe there are some system files or essential files that MUST be in the SD card. And also, wouldn't deleting everything in the SD card also delete my nandroid backup? And Clockwork? <-They do reside in the SD card, yes?
Let me reiterate please: I want a 'brand new' phone while keeping only my last nandroid backup Will a factory reset do?
Thanks again everyone!
I had the same problem and the only thing I noticed was nandroid backups take a lot of space and also apps that have been deleted keep their folders in the sd card
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Okay this is what I did:
1. Back up my SDcard to the computer (plug it in, mount as disk drive, copy all contents to a folder on the desktop).
2. Restart the Aria in Recovery mode (Vol. down while Power up)
3. Go to Recovery > Partitions > Format SD Card
Now I have 1.84gb of SD storage with these folders (viewed in Astro):
1. .footprints / thumbnails / voices
2. LOST.DIR
3. tmp / .astro / astro
Haven't tested everything yet but eBuddy and Market are doing well, downloading and app installation are running fine too.
Now I'm quite concerned about the following:
1. Does this mean that I do not have clockwork anymore? Because there was a 'clockworkmod' folder in the SDcard before I formatted it.
2. Am I screwed?
Thank you for any suggestions/advice. I hope this thread can offer some helpful tips to those who need it in the future.
You are fine. The clockworkmod folder is where rom manager downloads and your nandroid backups are stored. You can just copy it back or rom manager will generate it again next time you nandroid backup.

Thanks for reminding me BelacNongaw.
I just made a nandroid backup of my bare minimum Aria, and it automaticall created a clockworkmod folder in the SDcard with the md5 file.
Anyways, it's great to have all these space now
Great post guys I was wondering this myself. I recently rooted my inspire 4g to factory restore but all 3rd party apps are still on the sd card and i have no intention of re-installing any of them so i am looking for a safe way to delete unnessesary folders without deleting the vital ones, ill give your suggestions a try.
Technically you can safely delete everything that's on the sd card. Android will automatically create whatever folders it needs. Of course you'll lose any data saved to the sd, but you wont mess up your phone at all.
Sent from my cm7 Aria.
i have a g2 but i have the same thoughts i want the space back from sd card not worried about loosing any thing just dont want to mess the phone up
Don't worry. SD card is totally an external of the phone. Delete everything, it doesn't matter. And backup your needed files to any place you like. You can move them back to your reformatted SD card whenever you like.

Internal Storage Question

From what I understand, the 8GB of internal storage on the DX2 is divided into 2GB for apps, 4.3GB free to do whatever with, and the rest for Android. Right now out the 4.3GB of free storage I have ~800MB unused, which implies I've used 3.5GB. However, when I connect my phone to my PC and scan the contents of that 4.3GB of free storage, it shows that there is only 2.2GB of data on there. Where is the remaining 1.3GB and is there any way I can access/delete it to free up space?
I thought around 2gb was set aside for application storage.
I have no idea how much stuff u have on ur internal storage but u may want to move storage for pictures and.music to external storage..u can just move music files and the DCIM folder to external sd card and reboot which should free up some space...also try clearing cache from stock recovery to see what that frees up if u have never done that...
also in camera app settings to make ur pics store directly to sd card there is a setting for that so u don't have to manually move them...
Hy Drippis Welcome to the forums,
First off let me say if you want to solve a problem with your phone if you follow what ashclepdia says you'll never go wrong he has a great deal of knowledge on these phone's.
Second I never liked this type of labeling system for the storage on this phone.
Third a short explanation of the storage on our phone's.
Our phone has the following, according to VZW and Moto:
- 8GB of internal storage. This breaks down as 2 GB secure memory and 6 GB of usable memory.
- 8GB of external storage which refers to the removable SD card behind the battery.
In the 2 GB lives the Android system files and installed applications with most of their associated data. Some programs are accustomed to using the "sd card" which I will get back to in a minute. You can look at the status of this 2 GB in 2 different ways: 1. Settings - Storage - Application storage, "Available Space"; 2. Settings - Applications - Storage Use - All - Application Storage (on the bottom of the screen).
The 6 GB can be viewed by: 1. Settings - Storage - Internal Storage; 2. Settings - Applications - Storage Use - Media Area.
When you move things to the Media area, you are taking a portion of the installed app from the 2GB and moving it to the 6GB, which is similar to the way in tho older phones, you moved apps to the SD card. So, the question is why do we move apps to the SD card? In older phones there was far less "internal storage" and you would literally run low on memory for apps. New phones have much more space, so unless you are installing lots and lots of apps, it shouldn't be a problem.
With our phone, they have included internal, hard wired, SD Card-like storage, which can be used, mounted/unmounted, just like an external SD Card. The Media Area is simply a folder on this remaining 6 GB area. In some cases, this is automatically done by some apps, for backup purposes or caches.
Hope this is of some value 2u..
If this was helpful, be sure to press the thanks button!
These aren't the droids you're looking for.
Thanks for the responses. Although informative, they didn't answer my primary question so let me clarify. Not enough storage isn't the problem. I've already set up and moved all my pictures, movies, music, etc. to my 32 GB external sd card. My issue lies with the 4.3 GB of free-to-do-as-you-please storage on the internal sd card.
Out of this 4.3 GB
I've used 2.2 GB
And it says I have .8 GB free
Which leaves 1.3 GB missing
I guess I'll boot into recovery and wipe cache to see if that does much.
Not sure if this matters with regard to this issue, but I had been running P3's pre-rooted GB since I got this phone and earlier this week I flashed Eclipse 1.3 (loving it). I did wipe data before applying the zip.

I CAN say that if u are running 1.3 eclipse on p3s GB u are on the wrong kernel and that may cause some problems ...
not sure if that's what's causing this issue for u or not. .
also when on eclipse the sdcard and internal storage are flip flopped. to see what space u have on internal storage go to settings>storage>sdcard....that is ur internal storage space when on eclipse....
bootstrap does not recognize that flip tho fyi....
my first recommendations is getting on the 2.3.4 kernel by sbf to 2.3.4
if u flashed 1.3 over p3droids rooted gb then u are still on 2.3.3 kernel ..
which can cause issues...since any eclipse 1.0 or later needs u to have the 2.3.4 kernel...only way to change kernel is sbf or OTA update.
there is a sticky on how to sbf in this forum...don't be intimidated...it is very simple...follow instructions ...
edit::: how bout a screenshot of ur storage setting screen and also ur about.phone screen.((screen shot er (or er2) from market works just fine))
Look in a file manager and see if you have a file named ".trash-1000" or something similar. If you are viewing your files on a PC, it will be a hidden folder. See if you have any files in there. When you delete something it creates a .trash folder and keeps it on your storage device like the recycle bin does on your PC. I think its supposed to "empty" itself but may not have. If you have files on there, you can just delete the whole .trash folder. Just a thought.

AOSP Roms not using internal sdcard?

Hi,
I have a quick question about something I've noticed (and can't seem to find a thread on this in the Q&A). Behavior I've noticed/seen is that when ever I install an AOSP rom, it only appears to use my external sd card (/mnt/sdcard/ext_sd), but ignores the 10GB internal memory card (mnt/sdcard). If i use any "sense based" rom - like EclipticRez.....I can use/leverage both.....so I "don't think" it's a formatting issue...as right now i have full access to both SD cards. I recently jumped and installed Rage 3.0 when I found out that bluetooth has been fixed [Squeals with delight....], but when it wasn't accessing the internal 10GB i restored back.
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction and fix this before i install Rage 3.1 as soon as its available.
Thanks,
Rez

Im having a similar issue. Mine is being mounted but unable to access it from any apps or computer besides root explorer. I was reading somewhere that because a sense rom will mount it as a sd cards and AOSP mounts it as EMMC and jumping between the roms can cause issues. The fix was suppose to be do a complete wipe on the phone (factory rest, wipe data, system..ect) and the reinstall. Well i did that and still doesnt fix the issue, if i find a fix for mine ill let you know if your still having problems

Shrike - I saw that you posted this in the Infection thread. (which matches your response above)
>>AOSP mounts internal as /emmc and external as /sdcard.
I see that now. Is there a thread I need to read or something I need to do so that AOSP/Infection will leverage the 10GB that is on internal drive? It seems like "out of the box" AOSP/Infection/.... ignore /emmc...
SD Maid shows
/storage/sdcard1 = /emmc [10GB]
/storage/sdcard0 = /sdcard [32GB]
Non-AOSP does this "automatically" [from what I saw]....I use the internal 10GB for all the installs...then use my 32GB removable SD card for my media and backups only.
Thanks!!

with sense you can choose where your data is saved. AOSP does not offer this. you get to set it to internal or external thats it. you might be able to find an app that will let you store media and backups to sd and the rest to internal but i havent seen one.
for backups from recovery, if you use TWRP you can have backup save to sd card. for app backups titanium offer this too.

So are you saying that on AOSP you can set everything to either internal or external but no mix and match? So you pick either internal or external and that's it?
What happens if you put all your music on external but want your apps to install to internal? Will you still be able to read/listen to the music files while having apps install onto the internal?
I was just thinking of trying out Infected AOSP but I don't know if AOSP is right for me then.

Yes and no.. For example on mine everything is saved to the external but I save my music to the internal. Power amp is able to pull from the internal card so all my music is playable I think what he meant was you can either have apps save to the external or internal not both. On a sense ROM you can change the location of where the app is saving its data to external or internal

for nandoirds yes.
for the os its not as simple you will need to edit your void.fstab

Is it as easy as editing the vold.fstab? This what I have currently.
# internal sdcarddev_mount emmc /storage/sdcard1 38 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0 nonremovable,encryptable# external sdcard
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard0 auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host/mmc2
If I change/edit it to whats below, will it work?
# internal sdcard
dev_mount emmc /storage/sdcard0 auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host/mmc2 nonremovable,encryptable
# external sdcard
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard1 38 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0
I just guessed that the nonremovable, encryptable part should stay with the internal sdcard. I have no idea what this will do so if anyone sees anything wrong please let me know!
Also I don't care what the sdcards are called in a file explorer. When on a CM9 ROM I used a zip that made the external sd show up as emmc in root explorer. The same zip doesn't work on 10.1 but it did on 10.
EDIT: I tried this for the hell of it and absolutely nothing changed! I guess I should change it back but I am shocked that something didn't break. I really have no idea what I'm doing!

[Q] storage issues...

ok, so i am on an s4, twrp for recovery and cleanrom 1.5, and i only have 4gb of available space in device memory. could that be correct? or is something screwed up?
applications - 647mb
pics & vids - 36kb
audio - 152kb
downloads - 1.18mb
misc. files - 11.04gb (wtf?)
available space - 4gb
when i tap misc files, it shows me:
system memory 6.38gb
twrp - 3.49gb
titanium backup - 1.17gb
.face - 8kb
can someone let me know what i can do to free up some storage space?
thanks!
anyone? bueller? bueller?
Seems about right. Nandroid backups can take up a lot of space.
If you want to free up space, save backups and whatnot to your external SD card instead of internal memory. That, and you can Folder Mount to symlink some items and move them to your sd card.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Yeah, I just did that, thanks for the help! Got almost 8GB free now.
I've been trying to backup my stock ROM as I theme more and more as well and understand that I can move the file to the ext sd card, but when trying to restore in recovery, it says "file not found". I know it's there, since I moved it there, but will not seem to work. Also, when trying to restore through rom manager, I am getting a md5 mismatch. Anyone else seeing this out there?

ClockWorkMod image loaction

I'm trying to create an image of my device, but the memory of the device is way more than half full.
Since ClockWorkMod is trying to backup to the DEVICE memory, and not the SD card memory, it obviously doesn't have enough room to do so.
How can I change the location of where it does the backup?
I'm using ClockWorkMod recovery v4.0.1.5 with CF root, and I'm quite a newbie when it comes to ROM changing and everything, never done that.
Thanks
In the backup/restore settings in CWRecovery, you should have the option to backup to internal/external storage. Choose external if you don't have enough space in internal.

I do not see any "settings" in the backup/restore.
Also - I cleared about 700MB from my device memory, leaving it with 10GB used space and 2GB free, and it seems like it did a backup which its size is about 2GB leaving me with about 100 free MB. How does it make sense? doesn't it backup the data like images and videos?
Will still prefer to try and backup to SD.
Thanks
CWM will make an 'image' of the phone at the time you make the backup minus the modem & external SD card (if you have one). If you have photos/videos/whatever stored in the usual place on the internal storage these will be backed up. That backup size is normal.
Do you have an external/separate SD card, or are you talking about the two separate parts of the internal storage; you have the part that's used by the 'system'; & the 'userspace' which is normally referred to as 'sdcard' ? If you are using an external/separate SD card, there's definitely an option in the backup & restore settings to backup to external SD card (I'm looking at that menu right now).
I have a feeling the version of CWM you're using may have something to do with you not having these options; 4x is ancient, I don't even remember what options are in the menus of that; we're now using 6x.
Perhaps you might want to use a kernel that has a more recent version of CWM if that's the case & it's not allowing you do what you want ?

I did mean the external storage, yes.
I tried to update to 6x but it stayed the same version.
Anyway, if you're sure it makes sense that 10GB became 2GB after backup, then I'll trust that and will use the backup it created in the internal storage.
What I meant was, you said the backup size was ~2GB; that is indeed normal. If you attempt to update CWM independently of the kernel, you will revert to whatever version is baked into the kernel when you next reboot. If you want to update to a permanent later version of CWM, you'll need to flash a kernel that has said version of CWM.
if you're on PhilZ kernel, you can choose to compress the backup file. (low, medium or high compression)
You can also get a smaller file size, by uninstalling apps you certainly dont need. You can clear off cache files.
For cleanup i recommend Clean Master - search playstore
