Did you try flashing something different?
I'm not familiar with that file, but from the name it looks like a stand-alone CWM recovery rather than a kernel. If that's the case, it wouldn't flash, and might damage your phone. Where did you get that? Is it a kernel for the I777 that is just named strangely? Or is it really a stand-alone CWM?

You're right, I didn't pay attention to the file name. Looks like a standalone recovery, I figured OP would've made sure it was what he needed.

Thnx for reply.I can't recall exact Webb site, but it was in several. The way it was discribed,it is a stand alone.
I finally got Odin to flash it.But!!I got recovery menu. When I tried to choose (power button) the Rom Manger icon comes on screen.Hit power button menu comes back.U can't reboot, power off or any other command.U have to pull battery.I thought with what I read,it was compatible w/rom.I guess I find another way for cw recovery.Thnx,rbb1robert

You need to flash a kernel from XDA only. The I777 has recovery built in the kernel.
I777(S2)
Captivating M3
UCLL6
AJK 1.49

The file he got was from the clockworkmod site. (Rom manager site) or another site that hosted that sites file.

what if I pull the battery directly after oden finishes and then do the 3 finger to boot into recovery, would that keep it from going back to stock recovery?

That'll work.
See, you aren't supposed to have the battery in when you use Odin anyways, that way, when it is done flashing, your phone just powers off making it easy to slap in the battery and do the three-finger into cwm at first boot.

make sure you unplug the phone before you put the battery in. if not, it'll just boot as normal.
There is no ED01 radio that we have available, so I'd be wary of whatever radio file you're flashing. Also, Odin 1.7 doesn't always work properly, try using version 1.3.

Side note on this, is there any practical barrier to bundling a kernel with a recovery Odin?
I noticed in the kernel packages that they generally modify /system when they install. So perhaps you would have to odin over data also to run in a script to complete the kernel install at boot. Meh, it would just be nice if installing recovery didn't require immediately wiping kernel and then odining recovery again.
I figured a compromise would be to CWM recovery with the kernel in the same step, then I noted I was just being lazy and it really isn't much trouble to go through once per factory restore.

I would download a CWM Odin file and one of the two odin files from here. Flash one of the two (doesn't matter which you do first) and once it completes, unplug the phone, and then plug it back in holding volume down to get back into recovery and flash the other file. You'll then have a stock kernel that won't re-flash recovery, so if you boot normally, it won't matter. You can also download Odin 1.3 from here

Can't get z4 root to work

like I said im coming from a droid x. Im trying to root my sf with z4 but doesn't seem to work. I don't have my sd card formatted. Just curious if there its something I'm missing. Otherwise I'll root with a different method.

One click method works best for me. By the way, this is in the wrong section.
Or odin a custom ROM and you will have root, kernel and ROM. Then odin a CWR package if one is not included with the ROM package.. Done..

The best method is definitely using Odin to either flash a custom recovery, then flash a SU package or a whole custom ROM (and honestly, why wouldn't you? ).
If ALL you want is root with the stock crappy ROM then using one click is the best imo.
I think the best and easiest would be to flash a custom recovery through ODIN and then flash the latest SU package or any Su package for that matter ( it ll update itself once you are in the market )
http://www.mediafire.com/?mssii1m5tq3d911
this package contains the recovery, su package ( its like 4 months old but will do , or search and find the latest su package ), and odin .
all u need to do is store the su package on your card
shutdown the phone
put the phone in download mode ( hold vol down while connecting with the PC )
flash the recovery thru odin ( kinna simple - just hit PDA button yupp PDA button and give the path to the recovery file and hit ok ) dont do anything else.
also plz remove the battery before going into download mode
then once flashed put the battery back in and just press the vol up + vol down + power buttons together and you ll boot into the recovery hit the zip file flashing option and install the su packge
you are rooted.
( i have elaborated it all coz if you are a new fassy user then you might need this info - i needed it when i started )]

Thanks...I'll give odin a shot. I've gory experience with rooting droids but samsung seems a little different

[Q] Need Help! sgs2 stuck

Hello i have an sgs2 from At&t and i was trying to root but was unsuccesful and now i have this message on my screen when i turn it on " Frimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I could use any advice or help. I have search and tried alot of things but no luck. Please thanks.
What method did u use to root?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
And importantly did you attempt the recovery through kies?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
i used the "how to easily root your sgs2" method using odin. I tried to use the recovery through kies but it asks for a code and it wont connect to my phone.
It sounds like your phone is still half functioning. Try booting into recovery,
With the phone off hold down both volume keys and power button until you see the first screen, then let go of the power button.
If it's stock recovery you'll be able to do a factory restore(wipe). If CWM choose wipe data factory reset.
After rebooting it might work.
Worst case you can put it back in download mode and try odin again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
If you can't get it into download mode you may have serious issues.
Might need to build a usb jig or buy one.
Contemplate a return.
If you tried everything, and I mean everything to get it into download mode, i.e. jig, "adb reboot", then neither can they. Can't see anything you did.

You never did tell us what KIES has to do with ROOTING ?
I would definitely flash back to stock. Stock will never further mess it up. Not to mention there is the stock rom that's prerooted. By using that one you won't get a yellow triangle on boot. Nor will the counter go up from changing the kernel.

If he downloaded an international rom then he can't use the stock recovery as the power button on the international roms aren't the select key. They have an actual hardware button to select. I found that out the hard way.

At least you got download mode working. With that working there should be no issue about fixing your phone.
Just keep in mind depending on if "everything flashed from the international version you possibly will also need to flash the right modem.
I wouldn't worry about that until you got the phone up and working.
It's best to keep each step as simple as possible, especially for the first time you're trying it.

Not good. I wish I could offer more help. At least it didn't stop at flashing the bootloaders.
There's not too much you can do at this point. You can try waiting seeing if it changes.
You can hope if you do unplug it that you can get it back into download mode. Then try odin again. Though I'd make sure the checksum of the download matches up to make sure it downloaded properly.
No one wants to be the one to say unplug it in the middle of an odin procedure, but if no progress is being made after a reasonable amount of time, there's not much left to do.

Pick the right image for your carrier, download it... run odin with your phone plugged in, put the .tar file in the [pda] section of Odin and flash. That should return you back to bone stock. After that then do whatever you did prior to installing ICS.
edit: Personally I never restore apps and whatnot from titanium backup after making such a big change, you never can tell what effect restored apps will have on a fresh install.

Softbrick help

Have a verizon s4 that was originally on mdk. I rooted, and have been using hyperdrive for some time. After many sudden random reboots, I decided to change to another rom, Gdux. When I lost wifi, it was recommended to flash a new kernel to restore this functionality. As soon as I did this, I got some screen that said return your phone to verizon, something about unauthorized software.
Searched and searched the net and found that I could odin back to stock again. I followed all instructions, but now phone won't boot past verizon splash screen, and it gets hot. REALLY hot while sitting there on verizon splash screen. I can't get to recovery, only download mode after I pull battery. Going to "lose" phone for warranty replacement if I can't get it to work. Please help!!!

If you haven't taken any OTA's or flashed any radios, then you don't need to worry about that part.
Flashing the .tar file SHOULD have the kernel included... or at least I'm thinking it would. It should.
But after It flashes in Odin, let it sit for a good 20 minutes after it says success. Just so you can be assured that it had the time to flash successfully.
