I know this is a stupid question. But, I have to ask just in case there is something out there that I might not know about.
I also know by now that root after the OTA is not possible (I will not play with JTAG).
I still have the unlimited data plan, and I'd like to take advantage of it. If anyone knows of a software, paid or not, that will allow me to tether, hotspot, I'd greatly appreciate.
Thanks. :cyclops:
Its usb tether only (not WiFi) but easy tether doesn't require root....its a bit expensive but its what I use
Had to buy it awhile back when I was stuck s-on with my inc2
There's also PDAnet (tether only, not Wi-Fi)... I'm using it currently since my replacement phone came with the OTA and I'm stuck being a commoner lol

Clockwork Tether. USB only, cost $5 for unlimited use or has a few hundred MB daily limit. You will be breaking your TOS if you care about such things.

+1 on stuck being a commoner. lolllllllllll epic post. lol
I'm still lost on how my toyota is doing wireless tether on stock rom. It has to be a previously granted permission from verizon to toyota.
So, USB is the only way for now eh?
Ok. I guess that will have to do.
So, if I was to make it to a hotspot, I now have to connect to my laptop (via USB) and then make my laptop to ad hoc?
Hmmm... this would be problematic since my tablet does not do ad hoc, unless I root it also...
Any input would be appreciated.

FoxFi works great! They recently updated it to work on the OTA DNA and I use it everyday. There are caveats, you will have to use a passcode because of the certificate and I can't use a widget to turn it but both are acceptable to me. Let me know if you have any questions.
FoxFi seems to do the trick!

I was actually just coming in to let everyone know about this also! It seems like the free download working well, although the cap on the MB usage on the free one is very tiny - watch a YouTube for 15 min, you're capped.
It also seems like it really works the phone, the battery level drops very fast and the phone gets hot. I know i should expect this, but a bit too much to not wonder if it's not detrimental to the phone.

I don't know what this means. your Toyota connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Unless you are saying that you are surfing the web with your Toyota, please clarify.
Foxfi initializes the stock tethering app without root. It requires you to install a security certificate that requires you to have a lock screen password.

Has any rooted users tried to run wired-tether yet?
code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
Yes, I know the official wifi tether app works and yes I know there is a promo until May.
I just don't want to deal with billing issue if/when the promo ends.
Will answer my own question again for people who use the search feature:
No, wired tether does not work for rooted users, but perhaps there is some driver issues to be worked out on the PC side. Wifi tether DOES work. More info here:

I guess I am partial to wired tether (before I found out wifi tether had AP/infrastructure working).
Wired tether is free, and with Vista/7/Linux, it requires no drivers.
However, the newest thing is the Thunderbolt uses so much power that I have a hard time charging my phone with EasyTether/PDA net via USB. I don't know if it's because of the program operating in user land or the fact that the Thunderbolt sucks power up.
Having said that, wifi-tether will work great because you can charge your phone at 1A on an AC outlet. The USB 500ma doesn't work so well with the Thunderbolt. It barely charges and runs the phone at the same time
Sorry for the what seems like a basic question but didn't find this in my search of the forums.
I have a non-rooted Evo (that unfortunately I am not allowed to root). Anyone know of a way to use something similar to PDANet to tether to the gtablet?
I would think there would be some way to get this done but am not having luck finding it.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone?
Is there really no way to do this? Arg!
if pda net won't work for you and you are on verizon wireless.....you can pay the 20$ a month to use their service........I'm curious, why can't you root?

Shared phone at this point. I can run PDAnet on the phone....there is no client program that I know of to run on android tho for the tab to point the network over the USB to go to the phone.
Its an Evo....so I'm on Sprint.
Thanks for trying.
I think Tether.com has an android program now. Always worked great on my blackberry. Not sure if it will wifi tether or need program on the receiving device though.
Simple answer is root your phone and use Wifi Tether.

Thanks. Rooting is out for me on this phone so oh well.
Looked at this...this works same as PDAnet....an android app is there to share the 4G signal on that device but it assumes you are tethering to a PC or a MAC and has executables for those OS's assuming you are linking to a laptop.
In this case I was trying to link an android to an android. I'll keep looking.

Rooting does nothing to the phone that affects how it works. using a custom ROM does.
I have a HTC Droid Incredible, rooting does nothing to the user experience. But rooting does allow for using ROMs.
Well it makes no difference. I can't install a custom ROM and I believe I have to root to do that. This wasn't particularly helpful.
I don't believe there is a way to tether android to android without being able to manipulate non-userspace (aka superuser access). I'll do some footwork for you, but to my knowledge I don't believe you can. I wish I could be more helpful.
I've been scouring all the resources I could find.i can't find any way for you to do this.....sorry.....
What about a soft root? That is a method of rooting that is not permanent, and will go away every time you reboot your phone. Would that be something you could do?

Thanks to everyone for their assistance. I spent a couple days looking around but never found anything either. Thanks for taking your time to help.

So I have heard rumors you can bluetooth tether to a android phone. But I am not sure how it works.
Please let me know if find anything. I have been trying to find a way to do this as well.

Still looking. PDAnet can run the bluetooth connection on the phone side but I haven't found an app that runs on the gtablet side to route the traffic over the bluetooth connection (or USB if I could find that as well).
I found a bunch of people who have Xoons that were able to do it but apparently it has an option built in to allow tethering over BT (they get a little wrench that pops up once the devices pair). I have found nothing like this in ours.
I'm also trying to find out how to soft root my Evo as I don't want to run Unrevoked but I'm not having luck there either.
Is it the warranty your worried about breaking by rooting? If so I can understand. But I think you may be confusing rooting with installing a custom rom. You don't have to do that. There is no change in the phone except an app in your drawer called super user. Use universal androot apk or z4root and then use the barnacle teathering app from the market. Its connected my PC, Mac, winmo phone, Gtab and Xbox 360 to my phone.
There is a "hack" that works with the Droid X. I don't know if it works with other android phones, but I saw it a while ago on androidforums.com. do a search in the droidx sections.
Is there free wired tethering available for this phone?
is there a free supported app?
The computer im using doesn't have a wireless network card( it's an old computer).
and im wondering if there is a way i can get my phone to be its internet until i get a card.
I want to turn it into a FTP server.
Any help that helps, THANKS
Relative to the wireless part. I have a couple of these that I got just for this type of purpose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
Cheap, FAST and very handy to have around in the case someone brings over a computer without wireless access.
As for using your phone for the internet, that works good for browsing etc... but you will have a hard time getting your phone to provide services like service (FTP) since the IP is NAT'd....

the router isn't that far away, but it's a floor above so it will be going through at least 1 wall...

I thought you could just plug the phone into the usb and select internet???

THANKS SO MUCH!
Glad to hear PDAnet works. I tried the Wired Tether on the Google Projects page with no luck on CleanROM 1.7.5 or CleanROM 4.2.2.
Seems to be a kernel issue I think the one from Google will work when we get aosp or cm working. Maybe the ics official release will let it work on sense roms. The PDA net app works fine currently.
I use ClockWorkMod Tether. Love it.

So, I'm moving. And my PC doesn't have a WiFi card in it for the time being. Ethernet is out of the question.
I have an unlimited Verizon 4g plan... but I heard they don't let you tether for free anymore over their network with unlimited. (I can use WiFi root tether, but that's beside the point.)
I've tried using the Settings => Usb Tethering option, but stock sense doesn't let you tether without a 4g connection enabled.
Any ideas? (Preferably something without dumb limitations, like no https etc, but beggars can't be choosers.)
Thanks!

I use fox fi and with the pdanet application on the pc you can fake your image hiding your tethering, doing it the way the guy above states does not work on stock anymore normally and would certainty show your usage. on pdanet just use stage two usage hiding uh is hard to explain and I'm on my phone I'll update my post in like 10 minutes showing what I mean with pictures on my pc K.

Definitely works and will do the trick for now. Thanks man.
The free version kind of blows... I go through the allotted data in like a minute.
Do you notice pretty low speeds, or connection drops when the phone goes to sleep? Do you know if I need to keep it always screen on or something? Or is this the level 2 screening?
Wish there was a way to do this natively without having to do all this, but will work in a pinch. Thanks!
it works by using a advanced proxy type thing( its complicated) but i notice no difference with it on level 2 and none and witht he phone off i do have a fox fi key though since i use it for work a lot. with the free version i did notice it was slower but i had that version so long ago they had it where it was unlimited but only 180KB/s so it was slow regardless, this was a OG droid so long time ago. its still cheaper than getting hard line lol and an one time only payment, i used to have issues on windows 8 but their newest pdanet client for desktop fixed those. i get around 20mbps in the field generally when working.
hope this helps explain some things.

Thanks bud, yeah it helps. I'll probably end up buying it eventually... WiFi Tether [Root] works fine for WiFi, but for some reason FoxFi scares me. I feel verizon will strip my unlimited away from me while using FoxFi. Not sure why I feel safer using the WiFi root tether app though.
they should be able to tell your tethering with a normal non proxied app. In reality though they can allways tell if they cared but unless your use more than like 6 GB idk they would care if your plan is expensive enough lol.
Yeah, I wish there was another way than pdanet to do it. Wish there was a way to tell if the speeds are just my phone or the free pdanet version.
how low are the speeds on speedtest.net on pc vs on the app on the phone, mine are almost same.
I was.... "Testing" the download speeds through pdanet. Its about 1000Kbs slower through pdanet.
Hello,
I've just about pulled my hair out over this. What is the easiest way to get wifi tethering unlocked and unrestricted? I've tried hacks, mods, flashing ROMs with this mod baked in yet when i check my tethering usage it's still ticking upwards rapidly.
Please, can anyone help me with this? Thank you very much
Bump. Anyone?
I find that using pdanet+ to usb tether is the most effective way of data tethering at this point. Tmobile have really cracked down on unauthorized wifi tether, at least down here in TX. I'm constantly being throttled as soon as I turn on WiFi tether. User agent doesn't help either.

I use EasyTether+
The free version is pretty good, but restricts you from using https secured websites (like Gmail.com). For $10 you can get the full version; unfortunately it's only for PC, since the host is USB or Bluetooth only, and they only have a PC client.
I bought it with Play store credits via the Google Opinion Rewards app (so, for free), but it may be worth considering if you want to sidestep tethering restrictions and are linking with a PC. At least try the free version first to see if you like it; it seems to work for me pretty well, and doesn't make my phone get too hot.
Disclaimer: My GS5 is still in the mail (don't have it yet; just browsing the forums to get my bearings). My experience with EasyTether+ is on a LG G2, but it's still T-mobile so I doubt anything network-wise is different.
Bump, did you get the s5 yet? Does it work?
Anyone knows any fixes?
