Galaxy S II T-Mobile.
To have no vibrate, ring only on calls
and
to have no sound, vibrate only on messages,
where and how can this combo be selected in Settings?
Which version of Android?
Usually, in 'Settings - Sound Settings' you can adjust call ringing,
and in the 'Messaging app - Settings' you can adjust message alert.

Android 4.0.4 Galaxy S2 T-mobile default.
There is a "sound and vibration" checkbox for both Phone Ringtone AND Notifications.
The question is for separate setting for each, specifically: ring only call and vibrate only message.
Those settings are for Call ringing and notifications.
For message alerts, u have to open the Messaging app and select 'Settings - Notification Settings'.

Messaging > Settings > Notification Settings > Vibrate
is set to ALWAYS.
However, it will not vibrate on messages UNLESS "sound and vibration" checkbox is CHECKED for both Phone Ringtone AND Notifications.
this defeats the purpose as the question is for separate setting for each, specifically: ring only call and vibrate only message.
The question is not for the phone to both ring and vibrate but for the phone to ONLY ring on calls and ONLY vibrate on messages.
In the menu shown above, choose ringtone > silent.

If you have a Galaxy S II and tested this, you would see why more info is needed. Your post would accomplish half the question, the texts would vibrate only. But what about the other half: making the calls RING only without vibration?
Main Settings Menu > Sound
has a single "sound and vibration" checkbox.
If we UNCHECK that -Then how would you get vibration only for text?
If we CHECK that - Then how would you get sound only and no vibration for calls?
Question is for the phone to
ONLY ring on calls and
ONLY vibrate on messages.
@OP:
To be honest, I haven't actually tried to do what ur trying to do. Will try it first and let u know..

Just checking in with the community on this one. I have vibrations enabled in the sounds menu but the phone does not vibrate when I receive a phone call or text message. The phone DOES vibrate when I type and for calendar alerts.
Am I missing an option somewhere?

For texting to vibrate you have to check "vibrate" under the sounds menu and then in the actual messaging app, if you go to settings, there's another checkbox or "vibrate" .. I couldnt figure out why mine wasnt vibrating last night. Turns out it was checked in the messaging app, but unchecked in the settings->sounds.
I have litening Rom 5 installed & running Go Launcher. I notiiced that when I was receiving text messages or when it was on silent I did not get the vibration alert. I then changed the settings so that the its set to vibration always and the icon appears on the top. However when I go into the pull down screen the sound icon is gone?
All I want is to be able to put the phone in silent and it will vibrate when I receive a text message or a phone call. The same goes when its not in silent. Also how can I tell if phone is in silent mode as its not given me the sound icon on the pull down menu?
Is it something simple I am missing more than likely
Confused
If the option in Dropdown menu is missing then just hold Power button, you will see the first option as Silent mode/Sound is Off/On.
And I didn't get you clearly on the SMS vibration part, just make sure that 'Vibrate always' is enabled under Settings- Sound- Vibration.
Regards.
Just got a SGS II and when I'm at work I keep the phone in vibrate mode but there are no vibrate options for SMS and the Gmail app...
If I go into messaging settings the only "Notification settings" are:
Notifications - display message notification in status bar
&
Select ringtone
Same idea for Gmail app.... what am I missing here?
It's through Bell and the only modification I have done was add gingerbread keyboard... no rooting/custom roms or anything.
I searched and can't find this problem anywhere.
You have to select 'Vibration- always' option under Settings- Sound for SMS vibration.
In GMail app go to More- Settings- Account settings- Select your a/c- Notification settings- Labels to Notify- Inbox- Vibrate- and change as per your need.

under sound settings I see "General" and Vibration is set to always.
I just found the setting for gmail thanks to you but the sms I cannot find so I still can't get sms to vibrate
I have the box "notifications" under the messaging settings checked. I also selected a tune for it, but I dont get any sound alert or vibrate if i receive a message. I checked that the phone isn't on silent.
Pull down your notification bar and see if Notifications are on.
thanks
You're welcome.
in ics on my sgs ii you could set this..
on the sgs iii goto calendar and then settings and there is a "select ringtone" options but it just lists the built in crap sounds.. any ideas..
i need a loud song for my calendar notifications.
