[Q] A question about custom ROM's - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody, new user here. I've been lurking for quite a while now, and decided to register since I need a question answered.
So anyway, to the question.
I want to install a custom ROM, LiquidSmooth to be exact, and I want to know, do I need to keep the previous system, the stock system, from Samsung, or can I delete it, and install my ROM? Problem is, I've got no external SD card, and I'm kind of OCD about spacing, I've noticed that when I installed it over the stock ROM, it worked perfectly, only thing that bothered me is that the system emulates a folder for all files, the folders called 0 in a normal file browser, and emulated in others.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Custom rom
it worked perfectly, only thing that bothered me is that the system emulates a folder for all files, the folders called 0 in a normal file browser, and emulated in others.
Yes that is correct
You can delete previous system

flashing a rom wipes system automatically

That's good and all, but how do I go about doing that? Since I don't own or have an external SD card, and I would preferably delete (wipe) everything with TWRP, problem is, if I do that, I delete the file that's on the phone, the .zip file that you use to install the actual ROM, so, where do I put the file so that it doesn't get deleted when I wipe everything off the phone?
*Edit*: Well, if it wipes the system automatically, how can I make it, so that the 0 or 'emulated' folder doesn't exist, and it just stores everything like the default ROM from Samsung? If that's possible.

Flashing roms wipes system not whole internal SD card.
You won't loose all files in the internal SD card unless you choose to format internal CD card in the recovery (not needed to flash new rom).

Firstly it overwrites system rather than wiping so sometimes you can end up with residual files causing problems, hence most devs recommend you format system before flashing.
Secondly the 0 folder is the equivalent on 4.2 roms of the root folder on older roms. You can delete everything outside of the 0 folder, or so I believe but if you successfully delete the 0 folder it will be recreated on the next boot.

So, just so I know I understood you, the 0 folder is the actual system for 4.2.x Android systems, and it can't be deleted/replaced?
If so, can I delete everything in the previous folder, except the 0 folder, like the DCIM, music, etc. folders, and I'm assuming those were used by the previous system, the default Samsung ROM.
Also, to be sure, if I just do a factory reset and install the LiquidSmooth ROM, it should delete the previous system and all files should work correctly on the new ROM?

if you revert back from 4.2.1 / 4.2.2 to 4.1.2 and below
make sure you download the megawipe from below link then flash any ROM you want
flash the megawipe zip file totally clear all your content in internal storage = just like format windows

Thanks everyone, I got it sorted out now.

Force Delete Extra '0' Folders

I've been experimenting with a few different ROMs. First, I used UltimaRom, before moving onto Paranoid Android, and then CM10. Currently, I am using RootBox - Its been the best one so far (rivalling UltimaROM)
However, I've been left with lots of '0' directories in the file system. So, if I'm on root using ES File Explorer, I can click on '0' repeatedly to get sdcard/0/0/0.
Now, this 0 folder is taking a lot of space. Previously, the folder was 3.61GB in size(!). I've deleted it, now - reducing the size to 1.8GB.
However, the problem is that the UltimaROM ... ROM simply does not go away. The ROM is 1.8GB in size! So, its taking quite a bit of space. I've tried ES, Astro, and the delete option from 'Storage' in the settings yet, although they indicate they've deleted it, it doesn't actually go - and instead it just comes back again and again!
I'm sure I've full wiped in every instance. So, factory reset, cleared cache, cleared dalvik cache, and I even cleared system before moving between the ROMs.
I know two of the '0's were formed by bad installs of RootBox - one install failed, then, forgetting to format before retrying, the next one installed. To rectify this, I installed RootBox again - formatting this time before doing so.
How do I delete this thing permanently?! I really want to avoid wiping again, because it takes so long to get all my apps back. And, there's no guarantee wiping will even work! Although, if that is the only way, I will try it!

Download a stock ROM, flash it in recovery, and that should get rid of the 0 folder. Just make sure the 0 folder doesn't contain any files or data that you might want to save.
Better yet, update your recovery to at least 6.0.27.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Will updating my recovery really fix the issue?
Seems like an unusual method... But I'll try it!
Also, I'm trying to avoid reflashing, so in going to look for other solutions before i completely must flash to get rid of the 0 folder,

Recovery has nothing to do with this, you miss understood him.
Stock Rom? Why? Would this realy overwrite the (perhaps r/o) folders?
I think it's the savest way to format your internal /data /system etc from recovery, and flash your ROM clean. Theretical you can move/ delete your existing folders, but this can be very confusing. Some folders/ mounts may be read only at the moment...
If you switching from 4.2 to 4.1 you are left with the 0 folder. Flashing a stock ROM will reformat your file system and get ride of the 0 folder. If you are switching between 4.2 ROMs you may get a 0/0/0/... folder. Updating recovery should revert the 0/0/0/... folder back to the 0 folder.
When I went from CM10.1 to 4.1 I was left with the 0 folder. Formatting the system in recovery didn't solve the problem and flashing a stock ROM did.
Best method use the search function as per Q12 FAQS .

Installing non Touchwiz ROM causing problems.

I tried searching for the answer/ solution but I don't know how to phrase it.
So here goes: Whenever I install a CM, AOSP, or AOKP ROM (basically anything other than touchwiz), my phone memory does a weird thing where it only has the default folders, which are empty, or it makes a root "0" folder and puts all my data (android data, pictures, etc) in there. But it's not like it's deleting the data; the memory usage is still the same, 5ish gigs. But I can't access it, because like I said, it only shows the default folders without anything in them.
Please help
The aosp ROMs are 4.2.2, it has a different directory structure.
Your data from /storage/sdcard0 is still there, it's in /data/media.

Aosp bases handle the file paths different than TW. I think it's an android 4.2.x thing. That is why there is a flash able zip posted with some of the aosp ROMs for downgrading back to tw to fix the folders. If you are running aosp now you're old internal stuff might be in data/media

Awesome! I found it through Root Explorer. Is there a way to go to that directory on a PC?

Ahh damn that's going to take forever. Thanks though!
Hey guys,
I about to jump from TW to AOSP, and I am glad I stumbled upon this thread before I did. I just backed up the contents of my internal "phone" storage and the "card" storage (as labeled in Android File Transfer) to my computer. I believe this is only the contents of /storage/sdcard0 and /storage/extSdCard. I am thinking about flashing CarbonRom soon. I will make a backup in TWRP before I flash. If I happen to not like AOSP and want to come back to TW (I am currently on Beans 10) using the backup I made, how would I go about doing that? If I just restore from the backup, will that take care of these file management issues that are listed in the thread?
I just want to make sure that if I miss TW, then I can come back without problems.

There is a downgrade folder zip in a couple of the aosp threads(one is linked below) that you would flash after flashing or restoring a tw ROM.

HTC One X+ plus - Flash a ROM

I'll appreciate if someone could help me here as I'm new to ROM flashing etc.
I have the stock ROM atm and want to install CyanogenMod 10.1.
I have read the guide but there are a few points that I'd like to clarify, which are not really explained in the guide.
I understand that I have to wipe everything to install the new ROM.
I have TWRP and have just made a full backup, after installing the new ROM,can I get all my stuff back, eg. messages, contacts, apps settings and messages(e.g viber messages) and so on?
if yes, how do I do so?
Thanks

You should use your applications to backup your messages / settings etc. if it is supported.
You need to create a folder named 0 in root of the virtual SD card and move all your contents under 0 folder.
Of course you need to flash the ROM with a compatible kernel..
After installing the new ROM, I've tried to restore the data that I backed up using TWRP but it didn't work.
Now I want to go back to the stock rom and I tried to restore my last backup but it's stuck on the htc splash screen.
I believe I need to fastboot the stock boot.img file but I don't have anywhere, where can I get it from?
Now I'm in a very desperate situation. I've been searching for a stock boot.img file so I could restore back everything.
I thought I found one, I used fastboot to flash the recovery.img file and then went to recovery to restore my backup
now all the data has disappeared ! no restore files etc !
what shall I do?

recovery.img is not kernel (boot.img).
Flash TWRP recovery image again and hopefully you will find your backups... Never tried such funny things, so not sure ...

If you did not format /data partition in recovery, your data should still be there, but it sounds like there's something messed up with the /0 folder on your virtual sdcard, created due to multi user feature of android 4.2.
I suggest you chose a rom you'd like to try, flash the correct boot.img (kernel) for this rom, and then install rom using "adb sideload" command.
You should then be able to find your previous sdcard content on your phone using a root explorer and if necessary move it to the right sdcard folder for your android version:
Android 4.1: /data/media/
Android 4.2: /data/media/0/
if it's in the right place you should be able to backup your data to your computer, where it is safe while you can try whatever rom pleases you.

Ok, I managed to isntall cyanmod again but I can't find my previous data, all pics, music and everything is gone.
I didn't format the data so it must be somewhere but can't find it.
I can see any folder called 0 or 1 in the data folder
PS: FINALLy I managed to restore my last backup, all the settings and apps seems to be fine the backup retained all the settings, apps, messages etc.
however I lost all the music, pics etc.
I didn't format and I remember someone mentioned that they might be somewhere else, where can they be? as I can't see any path called data/media
there's a "data" folder in the device but is empty
Thanks
It should be on the root of your Virtual SD card - as it was...
However if you backup normally - music etc are not backed up.
If there is a 0 named folder in root of your VSD - check there...

yes there is a folder called "0" in the following path /sdcard/0
but is empty . I mean it has all the folder names (e.g music, dcim) but all are empty.

You must use a file explorer with root function and you actually have to grant superuser access for it, otherwise /data folder will be displayed as empty. As i said if you did not format /data partition in TWRP, your data should still be there.

I can't believe it, I didn't even format or anyting like that.
I had some important stuff in it and it's all gone now :/

The only way to backup your virtual sdcard is copying the content to your computer.
So you're now back on stock rom or any rooted rom?
If you're rooted you can backup your apps and app settings with Titanium Backup, without root you should try Helium - App Sync and Backup. For messages you can use SMS Backup & Restore and the Contacts app has an export function.
After you made all these backups, copy all the content of your phones internal memory to your computer, so these backups are safe.
Then you can try any rom you want, copy back the sdcard contents and restore your backups.

These sort of backups seem to be a headache. The only good one seem titanium backup ,which I believe has the batch option but you have to pay for it; i heard is worth it.
I am back to my original rom, which isn't stock(i forgot that I had a custom rom lol) but revolution.
The app that you've suggested are very specific, for example I have kik, viber etc and these don't have a backup functionality-will I be using titanium for them too? does titanium do a full backup of contacts and messages as well?

Clean install

Hi, i bought my galaxy November 2012 and since then I've made about 30-35 installations of roms..I searched around the forum and it seems that there are leftovers from previous installations, also, in some posts there are scripts that can clean your device, but the download links are broken...Can I delete leftovers manually with a root explorer?
Also, I've noticed that odin has became extremely slow, yesterday i waited for it for 40 minutes, several times I decided that it was stuck....but it wasn't; can this slowness be related to files, left from previous installations?
I saw this app - "Root Cleaner", should I try it out?
How can I make completely clean installation so that nothing old survives? If I use pit. file and odin stucks, will I be able go in "download mode" and reinstall...?
Hope that you can direct me! Thanks.
P.S. I'm trying to be understandable, but my English is not exactly perfect,so don't get mad
Downloading of script can be done, the links are perfectly fine!
I recommend Hawkerpaul's Nuke script (warning: this will delete every thing on yor device!!!)
Do not under any circumstances use .pit files!! Only if you're absolutely 101% sure what you're doing - then you can use .pit files. And there's a splendid Odin guide made by XDA's Hopper8. here you can read about it.

I'm definitely not sure what I'm doing, so I won't use .pit files. So i got this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100558
I'm a complete noobie, i've read about it, there are 4 scripts, i'm not sure which one to use...
GS2ROMWipe - This wipes pre-defined areas of your device without performing any backups beforehand.
GS2ROMNuke - This does everything a Wipe does, and also deletes the following Android/Application-related folders on the internal and external SD Cards.
GS2ROMReset - This performs a additional tasks on top of a standard factory reset for your current ROM. This is designed to return you current ROM to its factory defaults. You will not have to re-install your ROM after running this. Just reboot and you will enter the Android installation wizard as normal on the first run.
GS2ROMClean - This will remove the following known temporary and corrupt files and folders.
It will attempt to remove them from your internal/external SD card.
I will use Nuke.It says to run it only before rom installations, but how does it work? I go into recovery, install it and how do I run it?

Okay, but keep in mind that this will delete everything even from your internal and external sd cards. So if you have anything of value, anything at all - back it up.
I suggest you download HC-kTool from play store. Back up /efs. Then the files that appear after the /efs folder backup - back them up to your PC or a cloud storage (eg. dropbox) If you want to know which files had been created, sort the files after date. (keep in mind that there will be folder created too and if you've chosen a 'folder come first' policy in your file explorer, those folders will appear after all the lonesome files)
Just to check. In my phone (i just ran it again) there will be two files and three folders containing the necessary files to perform a /efs backup.
Now that /efs is backed up - you are good to go. Just 'flash' the nuke zip file as you would flash any ROM/kernel
Good luck.

Good luck.

Thanks for the assistance! I ran the script through recovery and it "wiped" everything then it warned me to flash new rom.I did so, everything went OK , but it hasn't wiped the internal sd card, all my files are still there, i hope it has erased the leftovers from previous installations....Thanks again!

It wont delete everything in sdcard. The system files will be there, but application data wont.
Glad it worked out!
PS. Don't say thanks - press it!

Delete all the folders in the root folder?

Hey.
I've got a question. If I delete all files in the root folder (/ deepest subfolder), what would happen? e.g. /system, /sys, /vendor etc.
If this results in big trouble? Or can I even clean up my phone this way and install all things new (Rom etc.)?
Maybe a stupid question

doing that will definitely brick you phone, to factory reset your phone you would format the /data partition or just use the reset option in settings
But sometimes i delete everything from internal and sd space and later, after installing a New Rom clean Master founds old trash =/
