Hello XDA-Developers. This is my first post here. (Wish I didn't have to make it!)
I was using my S5830i (rooted, O2 UK stock ROM) to take a photo using the Pudding Camera app when it hung. This app had crashed the phone a few times before, but this particular time after rebooting it seemed I was stuck in a boot loop.
I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers (I have a Computer Science degree and I work as a web developer), but I'm also not interested in fiddling with phones - I just want them to work. I rebooted into (stock) recovery mode and performed the data/cache formatting routines and reset the phone. But I got the following message upon doing so:
Code:
E:failed to mount /data (invalid argument)
E:copy_log_files_to_data: can't mount /data
Rebooting...
It reboots, and I am still stuck in the same bootloop.
Next stop: Google. I came across various fixes here on XDA. Tried CWM Recovery (5.0.2.6). Flashed it from my SD card, tried all the options, still no luck. And it doesn't seem to persist - after every reboot, the stock recovery console returns instead of CWM. (Is that normal?)
An example error message from CWM:
Code:
Backing up boot image...
Backing up system...
Backing up data...
Can't mount /data!
And another...
Code:
-- Wiping data...
Formatting /data...
Error mounting /data!
Skipping format...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
(etc)
(I could post more, but it's obvious that the error lies with the /data partition. I can't mount it, and nothing seems to be able to access it.)
Next stop: Odin. I downloaded my stock firmware image from sammobile.com, Odin, the toolkit used to split the image, the USB drivers. Connected the phone in download mode. Odin recognised it. Loaded up the PDA, MODEM and CSC packages. Followed all the instructions. Flashed the phone with the stock firmware, and...
Still stuck in the same bootloop.
I tried again with Odin, but this time selecting 'repartition' and using the supplied .pit file. Still stuck in the same bootloop.
So now I'm out of options altogether - hence this post. It seems that the /data partition is somehow corrupt. I can't figure out if it's a hardware or a software issue, and I also haven't been able to figure out whether or not flashing the stock firmware should also recreate the partition table for the internal storage (it would seem that it doesn't). If the problem is with the partition table, I can't find any information on how to rescue/rebuild/recreate it. I thought about flashing a custom ROM, but if doing so won't fix the /data partition it seems pointless to do so.
But I'm willing to give it a go, rather than bin the phone altogether...
Any help greatly appreciated!
Hey dude, i had the same problem, i changed my sd card and flashed jellyblast. It's the best rom for our device and is still better than the stock rom. It takes some time to reboot, but it was the only sollution for me. Greetings from germany!
Phone: Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830i
Rom: Stock Rom XXLA2 (Jellyblast till 6.4.2013)
Thank you - I'll try it and let you know if it works!
Which odin version you try? If you failed using odin 3.07, try with odin 1.85.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My phone is still bricked, though. Here's what's happened:
First, I tried to install JellyBlast 3.0.3 from the SD card by following these instructions. It appeared to install successfully, but after rebooting the phone was stuck on the first splash screen (Samsung GALAXY Ace GT-S5830i).
This was not a case of impatience as I left it in this state for 8 hours (it was fully charged when I applied the update). It now seems to be stuck in this state permanently. I can boot into CWM, but I still get all the same "/data" errors as before when using the various options.
Additionally, my Win7 laptop no longer recognises the phone when connected by USB in download mode. I get a 'USB device malfunction' error upon doing so. So I can no longer use Odin.
When plugging in the mains charger, the battery also fails to report its charge level.
I'm not sure if this provides any further clues, but the CWM log file upon wiping Dalvik Cache says this:
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/block/stl11 on /data failed: Invalid argument
W:failed to mount /dev/block/stl11 (File exists)
W:failed to mount /dev/block/stl11 (No such device)
Any ideas?
I'm increasingly resigned to having a brick on my hands...
Reboot phone normaly, sometimes you must reboot it more than one time. It took me five times, then worked

I think we have the same problem here - have you tried the things that were suggested to me in the following post?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40205690#post40205690
I have no idea why it worked but when I had this problem I flashed ace cream using a temp cwm. and used it to restore back to my usual rom.

Solved: very similar boot loop problem
I had an almost identical problem: on boot, it just got stuck showing the Samsung logo animation. Rebooting from recovery mode had the same error message:
Code:
E:failed to mount /data (invalid argument)
E:copy_log_files_to_data: can't mount /data
Things I tried that didn't work:
- Wiping cache and doing a factory reset from the recovery menu
- Installing ClockworkMod recovery and formatting /data from there
- Flashing a stock ROM that came as a single .tar.md5 file using ODIN.
- Flashing the same ROM and repartitioning using the .pit file that I got with ODIN
What finally did work:
The section of this post entitled "How to Unbrick Ace 5830i / How to use odin". I downloaded the repackaged Open Australia firmware linked from there, which includes four separate components: bootloader, pda, phone and CSC. I suspect it was the inclusion of the bootloader that was critical, but it could have been the other parts. I loaded those files in the correct places in Odin, left the option to repartition checked, and flashed it again. When the phone rebooted, I got the Android activation screen.

I have a GT-I9100M from Bell in Canada. My phone is broke and I've spent the last 24 hours trying to fix it with no avail
I was running the stock ICS rom from Bell. I rooted the phone and removed all the Bell bloatware and that was it.
Yesterday I came across a Rom that had the S3 version of Touchwiz so I decided to try it out - Salman ICS ROM for Galaxy S2 i9100! [TouchWiz UX][S Voice][GS3 ROM]
The rom installed perfectly and when it restarted, it stopped at the Samsung Galaxy boot screen. I attempted to go into recovery mode and it couldn't.
It would go into download mode. So I tried to flash the stock bell ICS rom - I9100MUGLD3_I9100MBMCLD3_BMC_www.samsdroid.com. It flashed with no issues but when it rebooted - back to the boot screen I go.
I flashed a CF kernal so that I could get into CWM and attempt to wipe it. It kept hanging on formatting /data.
I came across this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449771 and followed the steps and got no where.
Is my phone completely dead and if it is not - how do I get it back in working condition?
Help!!:crying:
When you flashed Bell's stock ROM from the guide thread, could you reach the recovery mode screen? I had the same problem and I simply did a factory reset after I flashed the stock ROM.
After I tried to flash my stock firmware with ODIN
I get stuck at Android System Recovery <3e>
and get these errors:
E: failed to mount /cache (no such file or directory)
E: Cant mount /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
E:copy_kernel_file :: Cant open /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
E:failed to mount /efs (No such file or Directory)
E:failed to mount /cache (no such file or directory)
E:cant mount /cache/recovery log
E:cant open /cache/recovery log
and as you can imagine the list goes on..... and when I hit reboot system now - it just freezes at the Samsung i9100 boot screen.
AAARRGGG
I did some more reading and someone suggested trying a Frankenstein rom KK5 as it does a complete wipe of the data partition on the phone. When I tried this, it does stuck on datafs.
I believe that my phone is broken

looks like you have hit the eMMC brick, you could try to flash a pit file, and flashing it with repartition activated... This its the only thing you could try, before sending it off for repair

Dear friend i understand your fear and i wan t to share with you my research, my trouble came for downgrading from ics to GB and now i have the red letters with the e cant mount **** , so i found that installing this rom (XXKH3) with the Phone Bootloader Update filed checked could fix it.
The original post is in spanish so if you need it it is here.
Scroll down until ERROR: E: Can't mount cache

But on this post the link to XXKH3 is broken so i found this other link on english with the link working

I'll try this thing in a couple hours when the download finish due to my 1.5 mb internet and i'll let you know any new,
Good luck
Heyy guys
Got a new international Galaxy S3 just about a month ago and recently I'd been running Paranoid Android 2.1 with ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.1.2 and it was all running fine untill I woke up this morning with my phone stuck on the bootloader animation, I thoughtt at first all it'd need was a reboot and it'd be fine, that didn't work. Then I've tried wiping the phone completely and reinstalling Paranoid Android and other ROMs including stock Jelly Bean but on installing those I get an error in ClockworkMod Recovery, after hitting install it'll just say 'Installation aborted.' then return me to the homescreen of CWM with a dead Android and a red triangle with an exclamation mark in the background? If I then touch 'Show log' this comes up:
Installing: /external_sd/stockjellybean.zip
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
I: Can't partition non-vfat: datamedia
I: Can't partiton unsafe device: /dev/block/mmcb1k1p1
I: Can't format unknown volume: /emmc
Also on trying to mount the internal sdcard in recovery I get the error:
I: using /data/media for /sdcard.
W: failed to mount/dev/block/mmcblk0p12 (Invalid argument)
Error mounting sdcard!
I: Can't partition non-vfat: datamedia
I: Can't partition unsafe device: /dev/block/mmcb1k1p1
I: Can't format unknown volume: /emmc
So next I thought I'd try fastboot method of install, that doesn't work as fastboot just says 'Waiting for device' for eternity, so yeah, I have no idea what to do... Sorry if I haven't included enough detail but is there anyone who can help me?:/

Keep calm, otherwise you'll just make it worse..
Now, have you got Odin on your computer?
If no, download it..
If yes, good.
Now, boot into download mode:
Code:
PWR DWN + HOME + PWR
And open Odin.
Download stock firmware from sammobile.com/firmware and try using 4.0.4, this time.
Flash it using Odin and see what happens.
I doubt, that you bricked your phone, if you did, CWM wouldn't show up, and neither would the bootanimation have...
Try flashing stock firmware first, and let us know, if it worked!
Hope I could help!

I've already wiped it loads of times? (And it was ICS that I just flash via ODIN)
Ok weird turn in events, although I'm pretty sure I wiped my entire phone (not including my external sd which I've taken out for now) after flashing the stock rom and touch CWM I can now see the directory tree of my internal sd card just as it was before. Don't know if that makes any difference but maybe adds some hope?

This may sound a bit weird, to most members, who are "scared" of doing this, but open Odin again, and set your mobile into download mode.
Then, re-flash the tar, but check re-partition. That sometimes works, in the rarest cases. I'm guessing you accidentally deleted a system file, which it needs for booting/flashing, etc. ...
Try that, if you don't want to do that, then try finding a .pit file, online..
Ahh don't worry guys I've fixed it, once I got the internal storage working ish I forced a backup to restore skipping all the checks, but big thanks to you familyguy59 you saved my ass aha!

Hello
I had installed CM 11 4.4 on my Galaxy S2. Today I decided to downgrade it to 2.3.x so I used Odin and took stock 2.3.4 ROM with PIT/PDA/PHONE/CSC.
At the installation , there was a error in the phone - data 0 error (or something like that, I didnt remember). After the installation process in Odin, the phone stuck at Samsung logo. I can go into the Download Mode. Now I cant flash any ROM because I have errors in Odin. I tried to use the OneClick tool but it dont work. Its my first phone brick so idk what should I do. Please help
This is a error after I flashed 2.3.4 :
E:failed to mount /data (Unknown error:0) E: install_application_for_customer:Cant mount / data your storage not prepared yet, please UI menu for format nad reboot actions, copy application failed
I repaired this error but I still cant boot into the phone menu. It stuck at the boot Samsung logo. Wipe data/cache is not the fix. I tried different ROMs and kernels.
hi guys,
i have big problem with my galaxy s2. it is about four years old, fall down couple of times. i had no troubles the first three years. i read into odin and co and did made some upgrades and another mod. usb connector failed to connect to computer and car charging cable. and first time my telephone crashed and was in a boot screen loop. after my usb connection failed and i bought a new online (found one in china, somebody wrote this here in this forum) and put it in (might be the reason for the crashs? i do not know!)
so today my telephone crashed again (i charged it through cable and then i saw boot loop screen "android", although i had NeatROM- Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean installed, so normaly i would have seen "neat rom boot screen", but i saw"android" ... what the heck???) i really do not know what to do.
so far i can say, what i have installed.
PhilZ Build Version 5.15.9 - i9100
CWM Base Version: v6.0.3.7
i tried to install now CM nightly, but failed somehow...i have absolutely no idea what to do.
what i want?
i need help to get a new clean installation with full updates? i do not know if i have best kernel or whatever. appreciate any help. through CWM i am happy i can put my telephone in usb mount and saved my data. so anyone?
so i upgraded the kernel to
Philz Touch 6.48.4 and CWM 6.0.5.0
it was the newest version i could find for i9100. is this correct?
now i can choose a rom which i want? or does some not work with philz or s2?
fu** thi ****.....i wiped and erased cache everything and flashed Hazy Rom 5.02 + Pico Apps + Root and still boot loop....:crying:
i give up....this crap...i flashed now neatrom

Flash philz recovery and go in wipe data -> clean to install a new rom -> yes.
Then try to install a NeatRom.
/format preload is important
well i did this now again. installer works fine. no problems. after it reboots, but shows again boot screen "android"
blog.namran.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/android-boot2.jpg
and loop. i had neatrom before and i know there should be the neatrom bootscreen...
i flashed a stock rom with odin. and again boot loop. i did factory reset and it says "E: failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)"
might be the problem??? what now??
i see support for this old phone is pretty pretty low
looks like i have to buy a new one...fml

Try to flash again official firmware with odin.
If doesn't work
Try with repartition. Flash STOCK 2GB pit and kernel with odin. You have tutorial on xda. After repartition and following tutorial:
Then go in recovery and try to flash philz recovery or philz kernel zip. Then reboot again in than new philz recovery and try to format this:
wipe data -> clean to install new rom
Go in mount and storage -> /format sdcard0 -> default
After that go in Download mode and open the Odin and try to flash again firmware.
I don't have idea, try this.
okay, i will try this
repartition means everything will be deleted right? so even pictures and videos?
when i did normal flash, it never erased pictures (even though i do not have an external sd)

Yes. You will format everything(even internal storage), so that means you will have to make a backup of internal sdcard.
Read repartition tutorial on xda. You have them in s2 android development section.
looks like it did not help...i did repartition with 2GB stock and stock rom (PDA) with odin....i am still having bootloop and now in recovery i see again "E:failed to mount /efs (Invalid argument) ... crap
well, i just saw after mounting usb, that i still have all my data...what the hell? what did i do wrong? i followed the tutorial, clicked all checkboxes and chose the stock pit and pda?!?!?!?

Hello,
Yesterday I unlocked my Galaxy S3 i9300, turned the Wifi on and soon after that my phone started to reboot.
This happened a few times before, but this time it got stuck on the "Galaxy S3" Screen.
So I booted in the Recovery Mode (TWRP 3.1.10) and was planning to wipe the cache partition, but I got the Error that the Recovery is unable to mount Any Partition..
So I cant do anything.
I wanted to ask, why my phone can not mount any Partitions anymore for example (system, efs, cache..).
What exatly is damaged and is it repairable?
I took a picture of the Error Message, but i dont know how to upload it. So I wrote it down.
Hope someone can help me and sorry for my bad english.

Try to find .pit file and flash it with odin. and then flash your stock rom.
My phone's model is SHV-E210K, i have searched on google but haven't found any .pit file related to my phone.
The sboot.bin file is the bootloader and it is not flashing because the bootloader in the phone is newer than than the bootloader in the ROM, the ROM is not for the phone, try a different USB cable, and/or try different USB ports.
The problem is recovery has gone crazy. Recovery mounts partitions. I've seen this problem a lot with twrp. When it happened to me I flashed the latest official cwmr via Odin. If you have a stock rom on the phone you can flash a stock recovery too. DO NOT FLASH A STOCK RECOVERY IF YOUR ROM ISN'T STOCK/ROOTED STOCK!!!
