Hello,
Developers, I really need help to get the ubuntu-touch port working again!
After the first release of Ubuntu-Touh I tried to port it again to our devices, but I don't get them booting. I only get a black screen. I have updated all sources on github and made the appropriate changes. You can find all relevant sources and information on my new website http://danwin.github.io/ubuntu-touch.html where I have uploaded the non-bootng builds for developers.
I still have the old builds available for those, who want a booting ubuntu-touch, but without any functionality: http://danwin.github.io/ubuntu-touch.html
Did ubuntu can be used as daily software/rom ?

Not yet, but in 2-3 days we'll have kernel fixes available to add support for daily builds of ubuntu, which have a lot of improvements.

Finally! Thanks.. :good: :good: :good:
that's f***ing awesome, great
Review
tested it out... Great work DanWin1210..
Although it took me i guess 45 min to 1 hour to install the ubuntu part, it was good and working..
Is nice n slow and laggy..but hey, pretty good for developmental stages..
As a review, i'll jot down some working/not working stuff that I found.
Working:
standard apps like messaging (only UI)
gallery,
the other ubuntu UI as well
Not Working:
Network
Clock (no date n time from network)
Wifi detects network so I assume its working, although the keyboard dosent show up so no way of entering the password and testing it out.
A note for all the users:
All in all, if you're mad about having a look at ubuntu, do install this rom; installation does take a lot of time but never hangs, so be patient.
Mind you though, the network and all isnt working so the phone pretty much remains a toy..
So wait a couple of days, until the devs work their magic, and get it up n running on our hardware insufficient phones..
Also, a note for DanWin1210:
If possible please do post how you are developing the rom. It would be very informative. Github is for proficients, and for "advanced beginners " like me, it would be quite helpful.
So, thanks again for taking the initiative. keep it up!
thx man, relly owesome, great work
Wow,it is amazing! I must try it now Well done good job dude :highfive:

The keyboard for entering the wifi password only shows up after a restart.
On http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting is a good guide about porting CyanogenMod-10.1 to ubuntu, I was using this guide with sources from Antibillos (https://github.com/cm42semc) for haida. After I got it running, I made a thread here and asked some developers to make the daily images of ubuntu working, which are not booting yet. Officiallysonyrebel is working on some kernel patches for that. When he has finished with them, I'll build the device-specific images with these modifications, upload them here and hope, that everything is working.
Awesome. cant wait to try it!

AMAZING at last
am I right in thinking this is less then 80Mb in size once unpacked to the mobile???????
making it probably the smallest ROM in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Been looking for the worlds smallest ROM and I think I have found it
going to have to purchase a bigger SDcard before I can test out this bad boy

partially yes, because It is a minimal build of android, but you also have to unpack the generic ubuntu part onto your sd-card, which is really big (more than 600 MB)

Thats a small price to pay considering most of my apps sit on my system rather than on the sdcard
its lots of system memory that I need to improve performance and stability not bothered about sdcard
Hi guys,
I wanna clarify some of my doubts... Actually this rom is android os right?? Only the UI is polished to be ubuntu ??
If no.....then how can I use playstore (apk) apps in this os?? And if this is ubuntu, can it be used as daily phone os???

This is ubuntu, not android, so you won't be able to install apk apps only deb files, and it is not usable as a daily phone OS yet, because we have to use the old mwc-demo version and a complete version of ubuntu-touch with all functions will be released in 2014, it is only intended for developers, testers and to have a port for our Xperia2011 devices available. If we could get the daily builds working, it would have a lot of improvements.

First of all, I know that this might not be the right forum for this, but since this id is new I am not allow to post the thread on the development forum. Now that I got that out of the way. I think a lot of you would really enjoy this video =)
We have started an effort to port HTC View to AOKP ICS. It's far from fully working. But we hope to get some of the basic functionality working in the coming weeks before we release the rom. So stay tuned!

List of things that are working so far.
WiFi, touch screen, captivity buttons(no back light), GPS, sound, HW accelaration? (not sure, as we don't know how to test it), internal sd card
List of things that we're working on before a rom release.
1. On screen button has weird look on some apps, it shrinks to a very small icons.
2. HD movies don't play, Omx codec issue?
3. Touch screen seems to be un-responsive in some game apps.
4. BT doesn't work at all (not as important)
5. Pen doesn't work at all (not as important)
If you have any ideas on how to fix these issues or provide some ideas what could be the cause of the issue (for example, you encounter the issue in other devices and know where to look for the issue) Please let us know by posting on the thread or PM us so we could speed up the release.
This thread is now close and has been moved to development forum as there is a pre-alpha rom for download.

Same here hope you can collaborate with drew to get the graphical seizure issue worked ot between the two of you - I'll post this in Drew Garen's Dev thread.
We're open to share our experiences, if someone post specific questions regards to a specific problem like graphical seizure issue mhkabir98 mentioned. We could provide some ideas. But keep in mind that we're still talking about 2 different devices so there might be areas where they will differ.
Can you elaborate or maybe post a short video of what you mean by graphical seizure?
if i get the time i will eventually take some pics and tape it so you can see it
Wow, looks great so far. Hope to see WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS working soon.
I'm willing to test if you need it. I don't really use my View for anything important right now.

Got a newbie question. Since we're building this rom from HTC HC kernel source + AOKP source tree. Does this consider porting or building a rom? What is the difference?

my personal opinion which is: porting if you have no compatible drivers available or framework already working on the platform.
- If HTC did not develop any drivers and framework for ICS and for our view/flyer, it becomes a port.
- If you use drivers from another device because HTC did build it, its a port.
- If you take panel device kernel driver and adapt it to this device, its a port. but changes are development.
porting is using existing source or drivers and make it work on another device.
kernel is an exception since all of it is opensource and everything build a custom kernel.
framework in aokp builds are modified aosp sources, where most is compiled from source with changes to source (which becomes a port, like you see old games ported to new devices)
but those i made, are nearly 100% ports, i did smali changes, a few library hardcoding changes into binary files, and only a few kernel changes.
i would call my changes 100% porting.
even if i ported a camera driver from desire hd, which again is not build from scratch.
a rom build is very common as i see it, when guys combine files after their choice and changes some graphics + apk's changes. that is a definate rom build. if you got not development c/java/smali involved) it cannot be a port or a developer rom, its a rom mod(ified) of an original with changes.
its not easy to define "build" .
a modified rom build, or compiled build from source.
not a direction on the term, but just my opinion on this.
(previously already mentioned that ports never are any good, and ICS builds from source are better.)
some people porting are better than others.
As many of you might have noticed, I've been pushing lots of MiniCM sources the last days. ICS is done and JB is on its way.
I'd like to take this opportunity and invite other developers or members that would like to contribute patches to do so. We already have some people contributing code for MiniCM and I would like to see more joining in. The code is available at: https://github.com/MiniCM
Why do this now?
This arch is reaching its limit as far as android development is concerned and there is too much ROM fragmentation for an old phone like this.
I know that most of the ROMs around are already using MiniCM binaries or sources and I'm ok with that. However, now is the time to consider contributing back and helping this project.
MiniCM is a fork of CM dedicated for these old phones. Notice that we are never gonna have official CM support, this is actually the cause that MiniCM serves
Licensing
I decided to keep my modifications Apache licensed. This is what gave android such a rapid development and I'd say has proven successful so far
I'd like to see this thread being used for Development ideas and solutions. NOT by user spamming (which will get you banned soon anyway since this thread is mod-monitored - you've been warned).
Reserving for build instructions
I can try to do option for disable/enable display button, but i'm not sure that i can do it
Lets keep this thread clean and on topic, as the OP has requested
We (the mods) will have a close eye on things, so lets not have any nonsense :good:

I have a little idea. Many users of X8 and X10 Mini/Mini Pro uses stock kernel and can't unlock bootloader. I tried to make an addon to boot MiniCM7 based ROM's on stock, but still without success. With your help, nobodyAtall and other users, we can make such addon. I'm too unexperienced yet to do this by myself. What are your thoughts?

Hi eagleeyetom,
Unfortunately stock kernel is VERY outdated to be usable in modern ROMs (e.g. gingerbread onwards).
In essence, one would have to replace the kgsl system to get the graphics to work decently with latest adreno blobs. Also I'm not sure if usb would be working since this too is outdated.
Other things to note: RAM (175MB if I remember correctly) is desperately low for modern Android versions, performance would also not be good enough for daily use. Kernel-side, I'm doing my best to boost performance as much as possible by backporting almost all of the main components that android uses from later versions.
All in all, for gingerbread it would be possible with serious performance sacrifices which I'm not willing to accept (even as a user). For ICS/JB, just forget it.
Perhaps a good project would be to make bootloader unlocking work for recent devices...
I understand your concerns and also think that stock is utter piece of crap, but it's still worth a shot. Such universal patch would improve development to our old shakiras. Your MiniCM is way better than official CM - really great job. Even with these bugs you've mention it's better than spent cash to unlock bootloader. I really admire the work of Alf and you - it's amazing to have such modern kernels to over-two-years-old devices.
Worse performance is a fact, but the ability to use almost every CM7 ROM on stock is tempting. This would be a great contribution to our small community.
P.S. I also think that you should have Elite Recognized Developer title. Such good work should be appreciated.

I see what you mean. Gingerbread compatibility is feasible BUT is gonna be pretty slow - in fact REALLY slow compared to MiniCM7.
We try to give a top quality ROM, so if this would ever happen it would be like a flashable zip and totally unsupported
I hope a lot pf devs will join the development. Cause everybody is working alone and if you all work together, it will bbe better for you and all ROM users. You'll develop quicker and easier.

I think it is possible, you can try it yourself, because you are able to change the recovery of the Kernel
actually it's possible. you just need to change the recovery file in the ramdisk with the one from JBMiniProject kernel or with one you compiled.
Why do not use the "Camera ICS+" in the market to replace the default camera app instead of taking a lot of time to fix the camera ???

nAa roms are pure CM roms custom built for our device. If you see there is no third party apps. Not in GB and ICS and neither in JB.

Why we can't ahve any other OS,different from Android?

If I remember correct the HD2 is develivered with Windows Mobile. Thats why it can be used with.
If you have the sources of Windows Mobile you can develop for our phone. But Windows Mobile is not free so you have to buy the development kit (expensive). Maybe you also will have the problem to get all the necessary driver for our phone to get everything working.
All other free OS could be ported (if you are able to do).
I think porting boot2gecko (firefox os) to our phone has the best chance, because lot of things from android can be used.
But don't think its just about downloading and compiling.

The Firefox OS team have already forked the stuff for the Nexus 7 tablet, I'm going to try and build it. If it works, well who knows what I'll try next
EDIT: after making and fixing a few build errors, it's surprisingly easy to get Firefox OS to build.
I'll leave it running overnight, hopefully I'll end up with something flashable tomorrow...

If there will be a way for android apps to go on b2g, "goodbye, android! Damn you qualcomm:| thank you mozzila!"
Edit: since the apps are html5, sinner or later a web emulator will appear, which could be ported to b2g without CPU emulation, or maybe run as wine does
Crap I am way to excited, I just want a ROM with battery (CM7-official based ROMs lately have tons of random wakelocks) and working HQ YouTube (and since this is html5 based, I am 100% sure the ICS/JB version of web YouTube will work)
But no status bar toggles = no more b2g (one very reason android is better than iOS)

Some of the sources need to be replaced with CM9 sources to get it to work. What's also surprising is that it really is under active development, you can repo sync, then do another sync in 30 minutes and there will be updates...

Yea it doesn't even deserve alpha stage, but it is really eye candy, really really fast (but I think multitasking is iOS-like)
Scrolling tho is worse than donut in avd (and that is on GS2), needs imorovements
Why am I this excited? Because it doesn't run java VM!! I love java as programming language, but the concept of running every app in a VM (I agree for desktop apps made for all platforms, but not for mobile devices)
Am I the only one that would watch your (adfad) PC screen all time while building? This is how much I wanna try it
Oh, and gecko (at least last time I tried) is the slowest rendering I ever had on my phone, but I really wanna see how the concept of gecko-rendered apps works out
P.S.: firefox 16 will have armv6 support for stable
PS2: sorry for so many "I am excited" posts from me, but firefox os is as eye-candy as iOS, while keeping the awesomeness of android (if it is open-source, hopefully root features will be available)
PS3: all my excitement comes from you, adfad, for saying you are building it:thumbup::beer:
Edit: installed latest nightly for amrv6, and I can confirm it is a bit faster than stock, but a lot laggier, so the lag in b2g is probably caused by gecko

Yes, there is no way of making screenshots, but I made some photos with my camera and packed them into a zip, sorry for the bad quality: http://ubuntuone.com/6keWFpFBG0kEsVF7mBF54D
No GSM function than i will wait for better version
Thanks for your effort
really laggy now
RIL not working
it's acceptable as it's a under development build
@All Devs please lend some of precious time to ubuntu for neo v
@DanWin1210 You can maybe get some help from some of the FXP team (Binary for example).
I once asked em if they were tempted starting a new project.
They weren't at first, some threw AOKP, others Firefox OS. Then I said Ubuntu and 2 (or 3) of the team said "Ubuntu is kinda interesting".
So, if you can take care of building the ROM, I think they wont mind helping you with little fixes and stuffs.
Just try to get in touch with them.

Hi, I think you mean Bin4ry not Binary right?
But thanks for your suggestion, I have just written a private message to Bin4ry and are waiting for a reply.
dual boot?
please don not consider this greed, but can we dual boot my phone, lik running Ubuntu and reboot and switch to JB or any Custom ROM? cause that cud be more flaunting and Ubuntu can be used alongside the daily routine.

I highly doubt the possibility especially keeping in mind our device configs plus we do not have much great devs left here!
Running one OS like ubuntu won't be less cool imho

Bin4ry is really busy at the moment, but he "will peak a look here and there but no promise for fast help", so we'll have to wait until he has some spare time or I figure it out my self how to make the daily images working.

Generally this should be possible, but as I'm no developer yet, I'm unable to make dualboot working.
Folks I am going to try N push as many roms out for this device as I can, only because we didn't have a lot of optional roms with kk, but now that I have learned more I will do the best I can. If anyone here wishes to take over one or some of my threads and maintain the device just let me know Please? I'm in NO way trying to push anyone out, I just want there to be options for you! My Candy5 rom is mine tho, SlimLP as well, I'm not willing to let them go just yet. Also as soon as PacRom has released their nightlies I will release my Pac build for this device! Again, if you wish to build, I will turn my thread over to you because I can't maintain every thread/rom as often as I'd like. This is just a heads up so everyone knows what to look forward to.

Know how you feel man. I need 64 bit computing to build and only one of my dinosaurs runs 64 bit but its sadly lacking in the memory to complete the builds. I came thiiiiiiis close to my test build completing. So I just flash other people's efforts.

Well if ever either of you, or both, become ready to compile I'd be happy to help you get started. I'll also give away some of my threads. When that time comes just hit me up with a message here or on Hangouts.
My builds are going to be less supported as I do not have the time to maintain so many roms for one device. I'll really help someone get started if they wish but please don't expect updates from all of the roms I have here. You can do this!

I'd like to help with this but as my PC is slightly antiquated my last attempt at a build failed. I may try a dual boot with ubunu or bbqlinux so I can max out my limited resources for one more try. Can't say when yet...life keeps getting in the way.

I definitely understand about life getting in the way. I have a house full of kids and my android addiction gets in the way at times. Let me know when/if you try to build again and I'll for sure give a hand working out errors and whatnot.
Step one completed. Now have the old Vista dual booting with BBQ Linux. Removed virtualbox client packages as it is installed properly and set it up with a beautiful grub splash. Even defaults to windoz for my wife.

Step two done. Built cm10.1 as a test and it is flashed on my phone and working.
BBQLinux apparently works out of box as was said on their thread. First attempt at build stalled out after about 10 minutes complaining of a missing shared object library. Version in folder was one off from the one being asked for. Renamed a symlink to match version number and build completed in about 2 or 3 hours. (64 bit Vista/BBQLinux dual boot with 4GB actual ram and a 12GB swap file)

That's awesome! Great to hear you compiled your first booting build. Congrats to you and hopefully many more booting builds yet to come.
I have a fresh Liquid build if you all wanna check it out? Give this lots of time to boot up, believe me it takes longer than my other builds!! https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952593312
