SD data disappears - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK I've tried googling and found a few things related to this but not for the fascinate. I use a 32gb SD card and from time to time files pretty much vanish and all that is left is what looks like the file but is 0 bytes. Its a real SD card a sandisk class 4. It happens on CM7 no matter what kernel I use. Cm9 and CM10 don't have this problem unless I try a custom kernel (devil kernel) then after about a day the files change to 0 bytes. Any ideas?

Bad SD card I would try a new one and faster one is recommended for custom ROMs class6+

That's the weird part about it is I can use my SD card in my Epic 4g and PC and it never does this. I switch between phones every now and then and the fascinate always gives me trouble after awhile. I was planning on buying a new card anyway, since most post online said that they just bought a higher class card and it was fixed. Hopefully a new card fixs it

If you are switching this card between devices when is the card being formatted? As in do you have the fassy format the card then switch it or is it being formatted by the epic 4g/pc/other? I would try having the fassy format the card from recovery and see if that does not make it more stable. Also like the others have stated it is recommended to have at least 6+ for card speed. Hope this helps

I try to format my card every once in awhile only because I copy a lot of seasons of TV shows to it. I have formated it on a pc, epic 4g and also have tried to have my fascinate format it but not threw recovery. I guess I'll give that a try when I get out of work. Thx! Fingers crossed....

Well its seems it did not help to format the SD threw recovery. It made it about twelve hours before data just vanishes only this time some file names were also messed up. Eh I guess mabey my fassy just hates the devil kernel. Stock kernal ain't bad so I guess I'm stuck with that lol. At least till I get newer SD card. Anybody know any good deals online for a 32gb class 10?

How to fix messed up micro sd cards?

Hey guys my buddy gave me a 16gb micro sd from his droid x. I guess something happens with those things and corrupts the sd card. Anyways, I was wondering if you guys knew a way to fix sd cards so I could use it in my atrix. Thanks!

You can get a USB adaptor ($2 - $5) that turns any SD card into a thumb drive. Then just plug it into an available usb port in your computer and reformat the card. Should work unless there's actual physical damage to the card.
I've found that there's an added bonus in that it's faster to move stuff (photos, movies, etc) to & from the card when I have a full-size laptop screen, mouse and file manager to work with.
Awesome guys. I think ill try the usb method and if that doesn't work im guessing ill be going to Wolly world!
Thanks guys!

Hi, i know you didn't have any files on the sd card you needed but I thought I would mention this software for anyone who recently went through what I did. My girlfriend came to me upset that her card suddenly had no photos on it, so I googled corrupted sd card and it came up with some opensource software called testdisk/photorec. It found almost all the pictures and made me look good...

its called asda over here but steeling a new card isnt much of a fix now is it lol

[Q] Pictures not saving suddenly

My coworker is stock rooted gingerbread with a 32GB sd card (with 25gb still available for use). He's been that way for about 2 months now, and uses stock camera and gallery.
For some reason now, his pics aren't saving. I just tried myself with his phone, and the pic was saved to ext_sd/dcim/... I saw it in the folder using root explorer. Within 5 min, the pic was replaced with the triangle error sign.
Any thoughts?

clear gallery data
change save location to int sd
format ext sd
ive gotten those on rare occasions, but couldnt pinpoint it down to anything in particular

Possible bad sd card. If its from ebay, it may be a fake 32 gb. Test the card with H2testw.

My thoughts exactly! I hate eBay, and that is where he got it (for cheap... Go figure ). I didn't know there were cards that read 32 but were only 8. It makes sense since he has used 6gb of space (and we all know 8gb isn't really 8gb)
Thanks

[Q] New 64 Gb micro Sd advice?

Hello All,
Like many others I have started purchasing my accessories early, so that they are ready when I get my Note 2 delivered to my door. I just received my micro SD card, and I have a few questions. I am wanting to have all my music and pictures loaded onto the SD card prior to the phone arriving. My only questions is would it be better to keep it in the format that it was sent in which was exfat, or should i format it to Fat32? I did do a search but I was unable to find a definitive answer which was best. It sounds like the note 2 can support both formats. Also most people leaned toward the exfat due to it not having the 4gb size file limitation, but I have not heard anyone successfully doing this even with it as exfat.
Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt
I would ask the international folks since they actually have the device.
That being said, I will use exFAT as long as their isn't a drop in I/O performance.

It is best to format your card in a phone. I would wait till you have the Note2. I know people that have had issues formatting cards on their computer and using them in the galaxy s3

In order for CWM recovery to read the ext sd, it will need to be reformatted to fat32...also your pictures wont show up in the gallery, atleast this is how the gs3 is and I dont think the gn2 will be any different.

Just a note about the sd cards for this phone. I talked to a Samsung rep last night and asked them what size, speed and file format works in the Note II. He said up to a 64GB Class 10 card formatted to FAT32 will work, and that it can be formatted in the phone.
I just wanted something official since I was reading so many conflicting posts on-line about what works and what doesn't.
I'm using 64gb formated exfat and have no issues. See the file sizes?

SD Card problems

I just received my 32 GB micro SD and I'm gonna put it in my note. I had a 16Gb. When I put in the 32gb it slowed down and my phone would freeze more often. I am running Liquid Smooth Jelly Bean 4.1.2 RC8. Ima format the 32gb so it can fresh it out. Should I reflash my ROM since I've upgraded the storage?

Did you move any system function or apps onto your ad card? I would put in the 32 and format and partition it, then take everything off the 16 and put it on the 32. Then report back your findings.
BTW- did you buy the same class card?

Had one of my 32gb micro's crap out on me today. Of course it was my more valuable to me card. Popped it my laptop to grab some files for a new Novena flash only to get a "must be formatted." Fired up testdisk 6.13 to have a peek at the partition before panic set in, just to find it detected as 32mb. Was a genuine Sandisk. Not impressed. Can't for the life me get the partition repaired. I'm fine with taking the data loss now, but can't get it to format. Going to try HP Drive Key Boot Utility once I borrow someone's WiFi in the a.m.

i read a thread here in the forums, cant post the link though, "sd card becomes lil slower when the memory is almost full or completely full..
btw go for class 10 which gives 10Mb/s r/w speed...class 2 is very slow...
so even if the memory card is 8gb class 10 it will show some performance..but 32gb class4 will be fine..but at some times u will feel it has become rather slow.." i didnt see if you mentioned what class the SD card was. hope this helps a little.
My genuine 32GB SanDisk MicroSDHC UHS-1 Class 10 card did the same thing almost immediately after I got it in Septemeber. It eventually died after two months of use. SanDisk RMA'd it, and I'm waiting for the replacement. I'm expecting that the replacement will also die... I think our phones is killing these SanDisk UHS-1 cards.
Mine was a week shy of a year old. Be my last SanDisk. Doubt it's our Notes doing it though. Had mine in and out of a Captivate, S2, Note dozens of times.

This thread is defeinetly interesting. I originally had a patriot 16GB class 10 (excellent card BTW), as I began to run out of storage I decided to buy this sandisk ultra 32GB HC1 supposebly read/write speeds are better than class 10? Wrong.. my speeds dropped even with tinkering with system tuner/ SD settings didn't seem to help much.. I have screenshots somewhere of both cards tested and compared.Well besides that One month goes by and my device kept trying to randomly read and scan the card as if I just turned the phone on? Games and apps wouldn't start saying app not installed? Eventually the card crapped out asking for a reformat, luckily I backed up the card before it crashed. I sent it back to Sandisk they RMA'ed me a second one I'm using now.. going on two weeks no issues so far. I'm thinking maybe there's a bad lot out there?

Tried that. Several times. Been having similar problems with my sd card. Its a samsung 64gb class ten. I cant find any of my downloads. I am a noob but I think the sd swap does something to the card. Only causes a problem if you flash a new rom (or reflash same) that doesn't have swap.

Sandisk 64GB SDXC which happens to be Made in China is crap and confirmed by comments made by others on Amazon saying the same. Pay a little extra for Samsung 64GB SDXC and have the peace of mind.
Same issue for me and I bought my sdcard from Best Buy also...I am running Jelly Bean ROM B7. The card is only 2 months old so I doubt the card went bad, this has to be some app/process that is effecting the sdcard swap program. Very annoying and reboot of phone resolves issue but I have to reboot every hr, it is unreasonable. It only started happening to me since B7 which i installed about 7 days ago. I may trying going back to B6 which i was using with no issues for a while.
I'm just waiting for my Sandisk 64gb ultra cl10 to die bought it about 3 weeks ago so will see glad it has a 10year/lifetime warranty. Plenty of people are having same problems with these cards and not just in phones. Easy way to tell if its bad/going bad is to format it and stick it in another device see whats up... pretty sure if your card is not mounting or being seen it's going bad if it pops back up from time to time it's about to be dead.
Well I finally returned the sdcard at Best Buy which honors manufacturer warranties. Been a week on the new card, so far so good...
