Phone freezes, requires restart - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed jellybam 7.4 the day it was released and since then I had an issue where the phone would regularly freeze with the only way of fixing it to restart the phone (holding in the power button).
I had originally just upgraded without wiping the phone, so figured last night I'd do a complete wipe (zoots megawipe) and start again. However today I am still getting the same freezes (in fact twice in the last 10 mins!).
Any ideas what might be causing this? Is there any diagnosis app that i can run to see what's causing the freezing?
I wiped again today and installed 7.5 and still the same issue.
Thanks in advance!

I'm having the sort of the problem so I thought I could borrow this thread since our problems seems to be similar.
Can boot the device without any problems, but it freezes randomly.
Tried:
* Different roms (want to use Slim Bean and are currently using it)
* Full wipe / Factory reset
* Wipe cache / Dalvik cache
* Not allowing Android to restore my apps after factory reset (in case some app was causing this)
* Tried latest Perseus kernel (but got a bootloop so reflashed everything)

Very bad Samsung After Sale Services
I'm very unhappy with Samsung
I got the same problem. Cannot use it because the screen freezes all the time so I need to unplug the battery for restart each time.
Then I decided to sent my phone to Samsung repair services. After 2 weeks, they sent it back to me.
Back to home, I turned on my phone and made a reset for the first installation but when I tried to connect into my google account, the screen has been frozen once again !!!. Then after and after ...
So the screen touch issue has not been solved even if my phone just came back from Samsung repair services. !
According to the repair document, they has just reinstalled the firmware but did not take care of the hardware.
So if this problem is well known why Samsung did not take care of this problem correctly ?
Now, They keep my phone for more than 4 weeks and did not give me a decent replacement phone with 3G at least.
For those who has got this problem, I recommand you to write clearly the problem with a letter joined to your request for the repair services before you send your phone.
Thanks.

Thanks for your answer
Really hope this is the cause and fix for our collective problems.
Update:
After doing what I was told to do in that post the freezing was significaly lower. They still occur but not as much, from 40 times yesterday to 1 today so far.

Unfortunately I came across that thread a couple days ago, have tried the DFG method lots of times and I still get freezes. Now arguably they aren't now as frequent, but I've had days where it doesn't freeze at all, so that may just be luck.
Possibly stupid question... Are you able to flash a new firmware whilst keeping your custom ROM?

[Q] Galaxy S II doesnt shut down (gets stuck while shutting down, not rebooting)

Hi everyone,
first of all I did search forum, but havent find answer nor related thread, if I have missed it please sorry about it.
Got my SGS2 about 6-7 months ago. No issues, everything perfect. Got updated to 2.3.4 with KIES (not really fan of experimenting with phone that have price of above average monthly salary in Serbia).
Rooted device with ZergRush exploit since I wanted as close to mint backup in case I have to send it to service(dont ask, service here is pain in the butt), purchased Mobile Odin Pro (cheers to that Chainfire) and flashed Hellcat's kernel for 2.3.4 from Mobile Odin.
Everything was cool, CWM, made EFS backup with his tool too, and so on...
However, about 2 moths ago, I started experiencing random restarts of the phone. Did search, found out that it happens and actually dealt with it.
Now, recently, i switched off my phone in the evening (was on 20% and didnt wanted to leave it on charger, and didnt want it to die on me during night), and in the morning I havent been able to turn it on. Freaked out badly, only to realize that its battery was empty. Which was odd because I DID turned it off.
About few days ago, i switched the phone, and it went to full shut down, however managed to get stucked somewhere in process (LED's are on, did vibrate i think) but never shuts down itself.
After some time, when I picked it up since I saw LED's on, i realized that its very hot and that I cant switch it back on (presumably because it never got shuts down) and had to remove battery so that I can switch it back on. When I did, i found out that battery was about 15% drained in that 10 mins, and I dont know what he was computing while shutting down, but it burned the sh*t out of itself.
Tonight it did that again so I decided to ask first before I do factory reset/wipe everything (maybe update to ICS too).
So, any idea, suggestion what to do is more than appreciated.
Cheers
Polite bump?
What is the actual problem .

Well assuming you have read original post, why the hell that happen, does it happen to anyone else, and how to avoid it?
this may help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499
Well, as I said, its not bootloop.
As I said, I shut down the phone, it starts shutting down, turn on leds, vibrate and stays turned on. After that battery drains quickly, and phone gets very hot.
When I get battery out, and back in it boots up without problems.
And I dont have any cooked rom, just Hellcats kernel for 2.3.4 stock rom.
you problem
Hi there,
Here's the best way to resolve this issue you have to re-flash a fresh new rom, meaning a full installation of the android os and here is how to do it,
First search google and download ODIN to ur computer or Pc.
Next search again google and type the following ( Sammobile.com ) and register and after that type the model number of your phone for example (i9100) in the site search bar and download rom that u need and thats it this should solve ur problem
Note : be sure to have 100% battery charged before doing the above and after installing ur new rom do a full wipe and enjoy,
I hope this was helpful,
Regards,
iMatrix
Yeah, thats probably that I will end up doing, luckily i have bought Titanium Backup so that I can backup all apps that I have and restore them after wiping everything.
I was wondering that somebody have any idea what might be going on.
Thanks for suggestions everyone.
before that try wiping cache and dalvik cache

This seems to happen quite a bit on gb roms.. definetely time to upgrade to ICS
Actually from what I have read about ICS 4.03, Im actually glad I didnt.
Releasing it in that state(e.g. battery issues again, 3rd party sms programs sends sms twice...) is bad for both G and Samsung imho...

SGS3 keeps rebooting randomly

My SGS3 works just fine for 2 weeks, until now.
Suddenly, it keeps randomly crashing and reboot into samsung s3 logo screen.
Oh, I have tried different roms (and stock rom also) but the crash still happen.
I also have tried wiping cache, dalvik, clean install, removing external sdcard, and restore factory setting. But none was effective.
Any ideas?
I had a similar issue with my Atrix and it turned out to be the SIM Card. Had it replaced and no more random reboots. I figured this out by checking the panic dumps...maybe there is a similar way to check this on the SGS3

Thanks for the response.. I tried it just a moment ago without sim card, and it still got the random reboot..
Any other people who got the same problem?
Is the phone unusually warm? The phone will automatically reboot if it overheats, but that wouldn't normally happen unless it's been left in the sun or overclocked.
I can get mine to go into a reboot loop if I play Asphalt 6 while outdoors, but the problem goes away as soon as I let it cool off for a minute or two.

Sorry to hear that man. Had a SGS with same issues. maybe Samsung has hurried releasing galaxy S3
I'd factory reset and only put on the important apps you use. Depending how long it takes for you to normally get a reboot you can slowly add new apps back to narrow it down. I had the same problem last year and thought I had a bad sgs2. But it turned out to be dolphin hd browser at the time that caused it and haven't had a reboot in a year. It could be something similar in your case. Hopefully its software related and not hardware

i just tried flashing normal ROM, after booting to "get started" page, approximately 3~10 seconds, my sgs just rebooted over and over again, until it show only black screen with battery icon on it (i think it may be charging animation while the phone is turned off).
ahhhh this is driving me insane!!
update : i just flashed hypergalaxy ROM and currently it is stable and not experienced crashing (yet ).
i'll give further report later today

Have you tried reinstalling FW with Odin? If yes does it still reboot after a factory reset with nothing installed?
yes, i have tried flashing stock rom using odin a few hours ago, but the crashing still happen.
my sgs3 now stuck at boot-standby5sec-crash-reboot loop.
so, i decided to bring my sgs3 to samsung service center tomorrow. hope they will replace it with a new unit
UPDATE : Samsung replaced my new SGS3 with a new hardware (not sure new device though, the flash counter reset to zero )
the problem seems to be hardware related
thanks for all your reply to my problem

I am having the same issue, I've had my phone since Saturday (6/23/12) and it crashes, reboots, apps crash, internet crashes, email crashes, etc. I can udnerstand a lot of apps may not be updated to ICS.. but no matter what I do.. everything crashes.. It's a bit ridiculous. I am a prior iPhone 4S user and am probably going to return this phone. I can't do much without it crashing or the screen freezing.. not being able to do anything for 2-3 minutes, etc. And they couldn't port any of my numbers from my prior phone because they didn't have the software update to do so yet. So overall, bad experience with the Galaxy.. and maybe I should have waited longer before buying this phone to work all the problems.

I'm very sorry that u have these problems.but there will always manufacturing faults when making so many units.only one thing to do,return it and get a replacement.when u get a fully functional galaxy u won't regreat it,it's a awesome phone.Samsung usually replaces the phone,so I think they will do the same in your case.anyway best of luck
After all the problem I've been through, finally I send my phone back to samsung service center.. they tried to reinstall stock rom several times, and in the end, they change the IC board to a new one.. and it does solve my probs..
SGS3 tebooting
Hi guys here is a peace of my experience
Bought the phone last year in November .2 weeks everything fine then it starts rebooting itself.retun it to the mobile provider and get it back in 3 weeks with conclusion that they experience the reboots as well and that the phone had some kind of software issue.in 3 hours i was back in the shop with my phone rebooting again.they send it again to service got it back yesterday with 4.1.1 android and they sad it may be caused with wrong customizing or not supported sd card, turned on the phone and had few reboots manage to update to 4.1.2 and today heavy gaming internet etc and no reboots so far.will test it till wendsday and see what happens.if it will reboots again then its going back to service and this time it is the 3 time so i will get a new phone.

[Q] Galaxy S 3 - i9300 - freezing randomly every few minutes.

Hi
my s3 keeps freezing. the screen basically just freezes while i'm doing something. and the device stops responding to anything.
cant lock it. cant do anything. it doesnt even autolock , the screen just stays on with whatever i was working on.
------------------
the only solution is to wait for it(about 20 minutes) and it will get back to whatever it was doing earlier. or hold the power button and it will reboot.
when i checked my router, i can see that it is still connected. so wifi is working. when i call my number from another phone, it rings but the S3 does absolutely nothing. and after it starts working again, i dont see any missed calls. so anyone who calls me while its "Freezing" will get ignored. i wont even know !!!
---------------
its not related to any app or function.
i updated it to 4.1.2 using odin a month ago (official release, because it would take it forever to get the update in my country) . it was running smoothly. a week ago it started freezing for moments every day or two. now i cant get through 10 minutes of using the device without it freezing for 20 or 30 minutes.
then the screen is turned on and it goes back to normal. and freezes after 10 minutes even if i dont use it.
i've noticed that using WiFi speeds up the freezing. When Wifi is On, it takes about 30s - 3 minutes for it to freeze.
--------
---
I did a Factory reset(full wipe from recovery mode), it worked for about an hour after the reset , and started freezing again like before.
----------------
after researching online.. many people had the same issue. some say its the stock android browser(but i dont use the browser), some said its a glitch in WiFi power saving mode(Disabled it, nothing changed), some said its a problem with the battery(i'm gonna trade batteries with my friend and see what happens).
I'm Freaking OUT !!! ... the device is Very Unstable and i use it on daily basis, i cant live without it. i dont know what to do. i've almost tried everything.
and i've paid alot of money for it
....
.........
i dont know what to do next. probably gonna flash it back to 4.1.1 or 4.0.4
i Hope to hear any ideas from you. or from anyone who had this issue with his device.
thanks in advance

I had this problem for the past two days. I removed my sd card about half an hour ago which seems to have fixed it. Before that it wouldn't even last two minutes without "locking up". I'll report back tomorrow if the problem was fixed permanently.

Nevermind, it froze just a few seconds ago. Keep on looking for a solution.

Well, I didn't touch my phone my phone over night and now it's working just fine. I have no idea why though.
update: my phone has almost stopped freezing. in past 24 hours it has frozen only ONCE !!
i've noticed that the freezing becomes more frequent if i pull the battery or restart by holding the power button.
so i started leaving it to sort it self out every time it freezes. and now its running smoothly.
-------
i'm happy that its working now, but still i wanna know what caused this. and if it will start happening again ??
---
everyone thnx for the feedback
and i will post updates and new info if i get any !
Mine is fixed
So i was having the same problem as the OP and i fixed my problem... These are the steps i took but maybe not all of them are needed.
Bought Triangle Away and Reset my Flash Counter
Flashed the Stock XXELLA ROM which updated the bootloader
Flashed CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.2.7
Booted in Recovery
Wipe Data / Factory Reset
Booted Normally
Installed crDroid ROM v10 with Siyah Kernel
This was finished at 5:30pm last night and my phone hasn't frozen since.
Spoke too soon
Well,
Phone is now dead.
Completely.
Doesn't turn on anymore.

Hi Ali5anDro31,
Just curious if you have any further updates? Is yours still working well?
It seems I have the exact same problem as you (freezes randomly, more likely to freeze during heavy load but also often within 5 minutes of boot, usually unfreezes in about 20 minutes, and often gets stuck on Samsung logo if forcing reboot rather than waiting).
For a while I thought that following your advice and just letting it unfreeze itself when it happens (even though it takes a long time) it might have been fixed (going 18 hours without a freeze after having about 30 freezes the two days prior), but now I just got one again (within 5 minutes of starting browsing this morning).
Should I stick with it and hope it resolves itself, or take other measures (e.g. see if I can return the phone)?

I keep getting freezes also.
So far, it only happens with XXELLC based roms. When I go back to XXELLA the phone never freezes.
I have tried several XXELLC Roms, but all of them freeze, including Omega and VikingRom.
I'm now on VikingRom v4.1 (XXELLA) and no freezes.
Edit:
Nevermind, now it's happening also on XXELLA roms. All this started happening to me after i installed CM10.1, and then i went directly to XXELLC, of course wiping everything including internal storage.
Spent 2 days with this problem, i'm on XXELLA with a completly unmodified S3 using a 64gb SD card. I think i've fixed it have now been running for 30 hours without a freeze. before it was freezing every 5 minutes, nearly sent the phone back.
Any way my solution is uninstall all updates to samsung 'music hub' and uninstall the samsung push service updates and disable. this seemed to fix it. Can't believe Samsung are putting out software that knacks their own phones.

Hi
I was running on Omega v38 past few days, and my phone was running great.
Few days back my phone got totally stuck once, but a reboot fixed it.
Today I upgraded to Omega 40, and my phone started to freeze every few mins.
So I megawiped, and reinstalled it.
My phone got frozen in the set up screen itself.
Megawiped and installed Foxhound.it ran great for few minutes and gets frozen every 5-10 mins.
So I mega wiped and reinstalled Omega 38.
Same problem. Even during searching for Titanium backup, the phone got frozen.
By frozen, I mean the screen won't respond or turn off.
Only a reset would solve the issue.
I've also noticed that the phone is getting too hot during it.
Any fix?
Could it be an indication to SDN issue?
that's really strange have you wiped system during the "megawipe")) ?
i guess the only solution is to return to stock via odin and than flash again

Having the same problem over here, tried numerous roms (OMEGA v37-v40, CM10.1, Resurrection) no luck at all. Phone keeps randomly freezing. So I decided to go back to stock and unroot (for warranty reasons). Without any problems I unrooted my device, and installed a stock JB rom from my country (Netherlands). Traingle away, worked like a charm, but still, when installing apps and settings, I got random freezes, even on stock (official rom). As you said as well, screen would not respond, no hardware keys either. So decided to return it for warranty, and get a new phone/repaired hardware. Woke up, phone still running (very surprised), used it throughout the day, only a random reboot in the late evening and a single freeze. I really don't get how this bug/hardware problem works... Going to see what happens next couple of days, before returning for warranty... I also tried other tricks, such as in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37432509 not sure if it helped, but it sure looks that way. I also check if my EMMC was insane (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993044&page=388) And it is, not sure however if this is related, because the sudden death problems mention not booting at all.
Good luck, keep us posted on your progress.

Anyone else struggling with Samsung Galaxy Alpha performance?

My wife and I both bought Samsung Galaxy Alpha phones when they were released. It was a fine phone until about a year ago when they updated. After that update both phones became miserably slow. As in, sometimes can't even respond in time to answer phone calls slow. Today I started the GPS and it didn't offer directions until I arrived at the destination. Yet, sometimes it'll be very fast as if nothing were wrong.
I know it's not a hardware problem because it's affecting both phones. I just replaced the battery on one of the phones (taken from a new Galaxy Alpha). Doing a factory reset didn't fix the problem. Resetting the phone helps some but not for long. I'm wondering if it's just FUBAR now? Should I try rooting the phone? Maybe Google fixed the problem in a later update.
If you factory reset it and restore everything back again you won't help the phone in anyway (if that's what you did), try using a custom ROM like EpsilROM, then delete unnecessary system apps, also try using less RAM hungry apps like Facebook or find a way to kill apps when you don't use them
