[Q] Possible to create backup without touchscreen? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello all!
My dad recently dropped his HTC Evo 4g LTE in a puddle and now the touchscreen is unresponsive. Sprint will give us a replacement, but I'd like to create a backup first. He is running TWRP 2.3.1.0 and CM10. I used DirtyRacun to set all this up. Without a touchscreen, I cannot create a backup from within TWRP.
Is it possible to send backup commands to the phone from within Linux or Windows? Does anyone have any other ideas for accomplishing a backup post-touchscreen death?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

USB connect your phone (because I'm pretty sure it auto mounts) and temporarily use Clockworkmod would be my best guess because CWM can be used with nothing but hardware buttons (vol +/- to navigate and camera button to select).

What he said, mostly. Hook in to your computer, reboot to boot loader, flash CWM. Use CWM to make the backup, copy the backup from the phone to the computer, then use CWM to restore everything after you've got the new phone rooted. After that, just do a good backup with whatever recovery (I still prefer TWRP), and you're set.
You could probably do everything from Adb, but it'd be more trouble (at least, I think it would be.)

Thanks both of you!
Unfortunately, the damage is worse than it seemed. The phone won't mount reliably, Windows continuously mounts and unmounts it, and I can't get Ubuntu to recognize it at all. It looks like my dad is out of luck when it comes to backing this thing up before we replace it.
I appreciate your help nonetheless!

Just in case, I thought you might check if you're using the right cable. I have multiple HTC's, but different models use different cables, even though the cables all fit each other. And, when I use the wrong cable, the USB continuously mounts and dismounts.

Un-root Hero **without working USB**

Hey, after rooting my phone and installing a few different custom roms, my USB connection has stopped working. whenever I connect the phone to a PC via USB, the device is unrecognised, and mass-storage doesn't work. It's definitely a hardware error, since trying a variety of different roms on a variety of computers, hasn't solved the problem, and even the recovery image doesn't allow mounting the SD card.
Research has suggested that it's affected other people in the past, with the only fix being to replace the motherboard. Hence, I'm looking for advice on un-rooting, rather than advice on fixing (but thank's for your good intentions!).
So I need to un-root my phone (and set it back to factory defaults), so that I can return it to T-mobile and have them fix it under warranty. Of course, because USB isn't working, I can't un-root the "traditional" way, by just installing the RUU update.
So I'm trying to figure out how to set the phone back to its original software, and I thought I'd ask for some advice before I make a mess of things...
As far as I know, there are 2 things that need to be done:
Flash the stock rom back on
- This bit is pretty straightforward; I just use the stock update.zip files found on the Modaco Forums (can't share a link here due to new account), and use the recovery image to update. The lack of a USB connection isn't a major issue for this bit, as I can transfer the zip files using the WebSharing Lite app (which allows me to upload to the phone over wi-fi)
Remove the Amon_Ra recovery image
- This is where I'm having issues. How do I go about clearing the recovery image, without a working USB connection? I'm not really sure how I put the recovery image on in the first place!
If someone could give me advice on how to remove the recovery image (or reset it to the stock one... I'm not sure if there was one initially), I'd really appreciate it. Also, please let me know if I'm missing out anything important.
Assuming everything works, later I'll write out a proper guide for anyone else who's ever in the same position.
Thanks in advance
Maybe this thread could help you?.... Read the last post on the 1st page, something about re-enabling USB.
Worth a shot?
EDIT,..... The link would help wouldn't it,.... Nandroid restore left other stuff around? (No ADB, No SD) [SOLVED]
thanks for your suggestion, but it didn't seem to work. apparently the issue has cropped up for other users, and the only long-term fix is to replace the motherboard under warranty, which is why I'm asking about un-rooting.

You sure?... Have you started your phone in fastboot (hold vol- and power)? Try that to make sure if you haven't already. Once it comes up with the white screen and skateboarding androoids it'l say to press back or vol- (not sure which one so read it) to put into fastboot.
But if you have done that already,... Unfortunately I dont know how you can run an RUU .exe without USB.
yep, tried the whole fastboot thing, didn't work. I can connect to fastboot, but using the command "fastboot oem boot" , everything is normal - usb/sdcard are not disabled
(i didn't copy the exact output, and I don't have sdk on this laptop.. but yeh, that person's advice didn't match my situation).
hopefully someone else will have some ideas/comments?

What?.... It DOES connect in fastboot?... Says fastbootUSB (or something similar) on the screen?
I had same kind of problems with my usb. Try cleaning the "usb-hole"
lol, tried cleaning it but no luck.
from the research I've done, I've sorted out how to put the main ROM in place.
now I just need to find a copy of the recovery image of a T-mobile G2 Touch, and flash it using flashrec
can anyone help with that?
1. recovery - put regular hero recovery od sdcard and try to flash it using flashrec
2. root apk - delete it using root explorer

Enable USB Debugging from Computer

It is possible to enable USB debug from computer? I need to delete some file from the internal memory that causes the problem. I can't connect through adb at all.
I'm trying to fix my secondary phone (Garminfone) that that loads into desktop, but force close launcher and everything else. The only thing that I can do is connect to the computer for file sharing with the phone.
Thank you in advance.
I'm in a bit of a conundrum, myself...
I am attempting to do this, too, but for a totally different reason.
I am a VZW agent trying to extract contacts for a customer from a Moto. RAZR with a completely non-functional touch screen (no display, no function). Phone boots up fine, no sweat. Stock ROM, no backup :crying:, all of the typical means of transfer have been exhausted.
More or less, the only chance I have at succeeding is to either:
Enable USB debugging through some kind of shortcut or trick, or
Somehow, without USB debugging, figure out the user name for the customer's G-mail account (he has two, and cannot remember/doesn't use the one with all his contacts...)
Wouldn't be surprised if it's simply not possible.... but maybe somebody with a bit more knowledge can let us know! :good:
Edit: Hmm, not possible to run adb from the bootloader, but you can run Fastboot commands. None of those seem to be of use for these purposes though...
as mentioned by PhantasmRezound, It's not possible, However. adb is enabled in most recoveries. Also If the device is unlocked ( and you can flash custom recoveries ) in any way you can flash a custom recovery, back up the boot img. pull that off the device or simply put the sdcard in your computer with unpack that, edit the init.rc to start adb. and reflash it with fastboot not quiet what your after but might do the trick.
or
With the non functioning touch screen issue, If the device acts as a usb host, plug a mouse in and away you go
There's always a way.
Thanks for the input...
I appreciate the feedback, but the way I read it... it's either not going to help in this situation, or it's too technical for a noob such as myself and I'm in over my head

Customer's phone is completely stock. Hope I'm following along correctly, but I don't think this is possible without having something like ClockworkMod and pre-existing root access?

Never really tried this... but, I suspect, this won't work... not only does the touch screen not work, but the display is black.
I suppose it could be possible in combination with HDMI-out... but since the HDMI has never been set to "mirroring," I cannot simply plug it in and go (the best and only result I've gotten in this case is the red "M" logo on the screen...)
I would have given up on this hours ago, but it really bothers me when I can't figure out how to do something that appears to be so fundamental and simple...
Thanks for the inputs :good:

Well, I was thinking about this, and I think you can do adb in a stock recovery, should be able to create a backup image with the right software. It all gets a little hazy and wolly on techinical details, so I'm afraid I can't help anyone there.

And you're a noob , I fully understand that my casual, off the cuff, do a,b,c etc reply assumes a lot of technical knowledge, If it's not your phone man, don't stress it too much ..... Just hand it back to them look blankly into the middle distance while shaking your head.....use the following phrase " Nah man you've F*ed this up good, did you not sync it up with your google account at anytime "
Sorry man, I'm drunk, probably shouldn't be at this keyboard now

Unfortunately, Garminfone is a piece of garbage, lol. There's no custom recovery for it. There is nothing I can do now, I guess. I can't get into fastboot or anything because every time I try adb or fastboot it would not recognize the device.

If nothing else, you can do a Factory Reset. You'll lose all data but it will be running again.
Make sure the phone is charged up since this will take a while.
With the phone off, hold down left on the d-pad as you power it on. It will show "Wipe User Data" and then you can let go of the buttons. Just leave it for an hour or so, it will go about wiping and restoring system files from it's own recovery partition.
Also, random Garminfone blog with interesting entries to read while waiting on your phone lol. The person started to develop a port for CWM:
http://mygarminfone.blogspot.com/
PhantasmRezound, I've done tons of wipes but no luck and I'm familiar with the website you posted. Everytime I wipe, I get force process com.android.setupwizard stopped unexpectedly on the phone.
@wolftou
Ok.... A couple more tricks to try for your specific device and then I'm all out of ideas plus it's kinda getting away the original question/topic
1 Android Safe Mode:
Android does have a safemode, exactly the same idea as windows safemode, only needed apps are loaded. This might let you remove the troublesome app.
How to get into it on your device? I have no idea and from my limted research ( google as always ), it appears to vary by manufacturer and probably device. I have booted my tablet into it a couple of times by accident but never really stopped to figure out how, that's not important anyway Just I can confirm this mode exists ( In some androids at least ).
2 Flashing an alternative rom:
Have you tried flashing a different rom? I'm not sure of your model number so I don't whether this is relevant to you but have a look at this thread it looks like you can trigger an update using a sdcard swap trick....
I'm thinking about buying one myself now... just to see what's possible with them, fortunately ( for my wallet at least ) they are not available in the UK and I've got plenty of things to fill my Android addiction for now

I tried rooting my phone by the steps given by your site and now my phone is showing black screen. i tried pressing volume buttons and power button still it is not working. so when i am connecting my phone to computer it gets connected for 1 min and disconnects and again connects after 1 min. so is there any possible way that i can send my phone to USB debugging through computer.

Can you create a step-by-step tutorial? I have a LG Leon. Stock. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi disabled. My Google account won't accept. I've been trying to find ways to enable "Developer Options", "USB Debugging" just so I recover access. ADB and most of the programs I've used required USB Debugging, or wireless access.

What did you do with the app? Did you attempt to flash ANYTHING on the phone? Sounds like you did however and messed up with one of its internal partitions.
EDIT: I'm going to go ahead and say you bricked your phone. I just re-read and... Why would you install something meant for *SAMSUNG* phones, on a *HTC* phone? You messed up right there. The unbricking project only will unbrick HTC Amazes when they're bricked in a certain fashion. It specifically states that it is known to be working for "writesecureflag 3" type of bricks. You could try and see if it will work in your case, but it probably won't. More likely than not, with the app you used, you might have accidentally wiped a partition that would have been safe for samsung devices (but dangerous on HTC devices).

*** I am so devastated, my cell phone was so valuable to me. Can't believe I was so senseless to make such an error as this. The app was for Samsung but the app said it could create a dump file so that my device would become compatible . But that sounds so stupid to me now . A little too late. I'm so sad. I wish there was some way to fix it. Wish there was a USB jig for HTC's.
IF YOU KNOW OF ANYTHING, ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING THAT MAY HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!

Hey it happens, that how we learn thing sometimes, and sometime it can cost us. You could try these things
1) See if it can be JTAGed (cheapest possibility)
2) If it's still under warranty (which it probably isn't) send it off, and say it wouldn't power on after a update.
3) Find a Amaze with a broken or cracked screen, and replace the motherboard yourself.
That's all I can think of. Good luck

How to mount internal SD with a Dead screen!?

My SGS 2 screen is done for. The phone still boots up and responds normally otherwise.
I am running a Gingerbread 2.36 Siyah Kernel on it.
How do I get my data of the phone by mounting the Sd card?
Maybe someone who has this kernel can tell me what to blindly press after holding Vol Up plus power to get to the mount internal SD menu.
Thanks!

Lol, its not that easy as said by u, 'Will Try closing my eyes and walk in the midst of a Heavy Traffic and see what happens'.
Either replace ur screen (either by paying or warranty claim) if not take it to a nearest service center and see what best they can do for u
If you want the stuff from the card, remove it and use a card reader. If you want the stuff from the internal storage, this gets tricky....
Get your phone to a service center and specifically tell that they need to just replace the faulty screen. So no JB updates, motherboard replacement or wiping the device clean.
Sent from my digital submersible hovercraft.
Really guys? Take it to a service centre? I already knew that.
I don't have the money to take it into a service centre. Phone is out of warranty.
Replacing screen costs money too. About $300 in Australia, may as well buy a new phone.
Actually if I boot into recovery the phone is already rooted etc it is that easy.
All i need to knwo is volume up down power, up, power etc.
Or there was some android app windows sdk where you simply mnt/sdcard etc while connected to USB.

That sounds like a better idea. Mashing around blindly in recovery seems pretty risky to me, especially if you're not sure what version you have. Unfortunately I don't know the first thing about ABD either, sorry. Good luck.
I just plugged in the phone to samsung kies, and it detects it just fine, but it says to set the phone to USB samsung kies mode and it doesnt support this mode. ATM I am in USB debug mode.
Surely there is a progam that acceses the phone via debug mode?
OR even via Download mode?

Gotta say this community is just abysmal at handing out help.
To the dude above asking what android version. Read the OP before spending time asking a useless question. I said 2.36. And windows or mac...? Do you really think I would not find be willing to use either if there was a way to recover my data.
If anyone is interested here is how I solved my problem, this simplest method could not simply be mentioned here?
I turned my phone on. Let it boot. Then I plugged in the USB cable from the computer. The phone should register the connection either via vibrate or noise, and in "my computer" the drives show up but are inaccessible by windows explorer, or kies because USB debugging is On.
go to google play store via your browser, preferably chrome. search for a a program called My phone explorer. Select install. It should install it to your phone. Look in the description and install the PC side of the software on your PC.
Open "my phone explorer" on your pc and voilla should be able to sync
I only wish someone could tell me this instead of having to fluke it on my own

If not, with the phone plugged in, go to device manager, find the device, uninstall it, unplug and then replug in your phone.
Yes I did, I'm very computer literate. Turns out a cable can't tell you its bad, the original cable seem to be the problem. Probably why sometimes I get slow charge when plugged into the wall. All may be null and void when I attempt n4 conversion lol , wish me luck!

Good luck. I recommend having LGNPST prepped to revert to stock, with the DLLs and the BIN/TOT version of the LG ROM. AFAIK, that's the only way to get back, because of how extensive the N4 conversion is. Reverting with a ZIP ROM in CWM is unlikely to work.

As you can seee, it's kind of a pain to set up LGNPST's environment correctly. I recommend taking all of those files and backing them up to a secure location, so that you never need to hunt them down and re-download them again.
The guide also doesn't mention that your phone needs to be in Download Mode to interact with LGNPST. This is achieved by turning the phone off, plugging it into your computer with a USB cable, then holding down the power button and both volume buttons at the same time until the Download Mode indicator shows up on your screen. It may take several attempts; the process appears to have a low tolerance for poor button press timing.
LGNPST will interact with your phone even if Windows no longer recognizes it. I think that's why it remains popular as a last-resort recovery method.

Yah , I think I'm going to give up on trying, between the cable thing, now I can only talk to my phone through adb, fast boot won't seem to work. Plus I can't find a lgnpst guide anywhere for our phone. No idea where to get the DLL I'm supposed to flash with, nor where to get the files to flash back. This is my first lg, I've been a HTC guy, so I know nothing about lgnpst. Thanks though

Everything you need is on Team Nocturnals website where the conversion thread is minus lgnpst and the nexus 4 drivers.
After you flash the n4 conversion, boot in recovery and then install the nexus 4 universal naked drivers (Google it, should be the first xda link.) Then you can use adb to fast boot -w and flash a recovery. Just read a little more and you'll realize its not hard at all. Just make sure everything is prepared. Good luck if you try it. It was very interesting to me. I've gone back to stock and came back to the conversion after the sdcard fix

Right now the problem I am having is getting windows to recognize my phone in boot loader/ fast boot which will prevent me from being able to fastboot -w , I have a thread on here should be titled fast boot and recovery. Posted it last night. I'm trying to make sure everything is ready, but my phone and my PC are just trying to fight me every which way lol. I'm going to try another computer and see if things run smoother, I have rooted and unlocked a bunch of phones for friends and myself on my laptop. Wondering if I'm just having a lot of driver conflicts lol
Its not about what you know , but who you know.
You might need to flash your recovery, and possibly lock your bootloader again. What I have seen over my several rooted phones is that sometimes when unlocking them, the binary code doesn't match up and will not allow the battery, USB port, and even screen to work with the software. Won't matter if you unistall or reinstall the drivers. Hope this help!

Which software are you describing? I have not lgnpst 'd anything yet, it does notice my phone both with phone on and connection settings to lg software, and in download mode. The problem I am currently stuck on is getting my PC to notice my phone in boot loader so I can't use any fb commands. I can talk to my phone when its on through adb commands no problem.
I dont want to get in trouble, the original problem was I could not get windows to notice my phone at all. I fixed that by trying a different USB cord, apparently my original is failing. If you would like to help me more so I don't get yelled at, please post in my other thread titled fast boot and recovery in the qa thread. I really want to attempt this, its my bday. So it would be a awesome little bday present to my flashaholic self
