I've been thinking, when you upgrade your device's software from GB to ICS via flashtool,it flashes a kernel even if your bootloader is locked. So would it be possible to change the kernel in the stock ICS ftf rom file with a custom one, and flash it that way? Correct me if i made a mistake.

I never thought of that, but why you don't try it & report what happens? So you earn experience
No' it's impossible. You can flash a kernel.sin but I guess you can't create a custom kernel.sin. The .ftf is Sony signed and you can't modify it

I can't try it because my bootloader is already unlocked.

It's impossible, because you can't modify the ftf. And you won't find a custom kernel.sin that you can flash on your locked bootloader

Its impossible.
but still having unlocked bootloader doesn't mean that u can't relock it
Don't forget to hit thanks

You cant flash custom kernels unless you unlock your bootloader . Hit thanks if i helped
Back on the old Xperia 2010 devices, there was no option for unlocking the bootloader. Our devices(2011 devices) are the first to get this option, so for those devices custom kernel.sin files were there. Check this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363460
Don't think that it will work though.

Hi, I'm a noob here and in android platform.
So I bought this sk17i and it has 2.3.4 4.0.2.A.0.62
I was trying to root it fails and from what I've read around here it's because of 4.0.2.A.0.62? is there a work around with that?
thanks
I didnt try it, but an older official kernel should work as mentioned here:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/12/2...4-0-2-a-0-62-rolling-out-just-a-minor-update/
if you have an unlocked bootloader, you can also flash this here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440161
thanks but can you tell me where to get the stock kernel for sk17i? I'm sorry I'm new to this I've been searching but all I could find are the ones that are modded
by the way I was trying to use modded kernels but I always get this:
FAILED(remote: The devices must be rooted first)

Isn't it the whole firmware? I had seen in some forum(I think it was sonyericsson's support forum) Xperia arc's kernel (only kernel) was available. It was a zipped file, only around 4-5mb.
Isn't something like that available for our phone. I searched a lot, but didn't find it.
Won't flashing the whole firmware (in the link) unlock bootloader?

Unlock bootloader is different than flashing the fw although it is related if you want to flash the custom ROM (and custom kernel of course such as rage or krsh kernel).
Google "unlock bootloader+sony ericsson" to find the website where you can get the key to do so.
Im using stock .62 fw with unlocked bl becoz i want to use custom kernel with prerooting as .62 cant be rooted by superoneclick and i dont mind on the effect to the warranty. Somemore, cm ROM isnt stable enough.
In other words, you can flash stock ROM with stock kernel even if you dont unlock bootloader but if you want to flash custom kernel or custom ROM or both, bl had to be unlock or else you will stuck at S.E words during boot.

1. Yes u can, with GB ftf file.
2. If u think on ROMs like CyanogenMod ROM answer is no, u must first unlock ur BL.
1. Of course u can, just download the file and flash it with flashtool
2. Some custom rom need unlock bootloaders to be installed, but another rom no need that.
I think if u want to install more custom rom, mod, root and etc, unlock bl is the best way

Guys, thank you very much. I succesfully downgraded to GB official stock ROM.
Now my last but very important question is - i dont like GB and i still dont like ICS (i downgraded only because of better battery life in GB), but i want to test some custom ROM (like AOKP rom posted in Sola section).
As much as i red i can not flash this ROM without unlocking the bootloader and installing CWM on my phone, is that right?
Actually the question i wanted to ask was - if i unlock bootloader can i flash custom rom with Flash Tool or i can flash only with CWM (which i dont know but i dont want to use)?

Hi!
I have only a little question. I have CyanogenMod 9 on WT19i (LiveWithWalkman). Of course I have unlocked bootloader. I want to go back to stock ROM and unlock bootloader. I have to only flash old ftf .62 and flash relocking file or it is more complicated?

No you don't... You don't have a locked bootloader...
I don't think there is any CM ROM for Xperia active with locked bootloader...
If it exist do you mind passing the link for it
BTW running CM on stock kernel too bad

You are mistaking with the meaning of unlock/locked boot loader. Phone comes with locked boot loader then it is unlocked for full throttle. If u want to go back to stock u dont have to relock the boot loader again. Just flash any ics kernel & then stock rom. Or u dont have to flash a kernel if u are gonna flash a ftf
Sorry!
Sorry. Very stupid mistake . UNLOCKED

Yes just flash the ftf and if you want to root, just flash a prerooted kernel for gingerbread, but stock kernel will be flashed with the ftf :good:
Thread moved. All questions belong in Q&A not General.
Thanks
AvRS
we all know that wt19 and branded sony/sony ericsson are very hard to unlock its booloader due to they doesn't have fastboot mode.
But there's a method to unlock bootloaders via S1tool (models until 12w24)
It unlocks the bootloader but we still lack of fastbot so, we only can flach custom .FTF kernels
All users that have unlcoked bootloader and want to install custom roms need this format of kernel,
PLEASE MAKE CUSTOM KERNELS BOTH .IMG AND .FTF
thanks for your time
I guess that's impossible as .ftf is a Sony signed format and we can't recreate it. I guess that's the problem, but I'm not 100% sure

Yes you need an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom kernel. But you can flash a custom kernel using fastboot tools and a command prompt or a terminal (Linux) too. You don't need flashtool
If the link for flashtool is not working, check the stickies in Dev section, flashtool should be there. It should still be downloadable

yes you should be having a unlocked bootloader for flashing a custom kernel however if you want to go back to stock ICS someday you will have to re-lock your bootloader and simply click on "Repair Phone" in SEUS.......
