My update is near the bottom. I also learned that online orders now also charge full sales tax of the no contract price for CA.

Not just online sales. The only place that I know that doesn't charge the sales tax of the full price (non-subsidized) of mobile phones for CA sales is Simplexity.

[TIPS] Where are YOU going to buy your Evo 3D?

Sprint and target are offering 150 for used evo 4g, which isn't really a bad deal if you're evo is bad condition, but if yours is in good condition you can easily get 200, probably 250, and a slight chance at 300 if you post at the right time and include the right stuff.
Now there's also radioahack who is offering a whopping 100 for your evo. Like I said above if yours is in good condition go with Craig's or eBay, if not go with target or sprint. $100 ? Really radio shack?
Last of all is best buy. I'm not quite sure about there buy back program but its probably similar
Edit: wirefly is also sellin it right now for 179.99, but according to user RDCRDS, they ill jack I up to 300 if you switch the phone to another line. So for those upgrading your mom/brother/daughters lines, don't go through wirefly.
If you decide to sell your Evo through inline services, I highly recommend starting with craigslist. There are no fees or taxes, but the buyers are usually cheap compared to eBay buyers. With eBay you get a larger customer base and your item will sell for more, BUT and this a big but, sir mix-a-lots type of butt, eBay and PayPal combined, charge an arm and leg for their services. Those fees can be paid back with in 30 days so you can take them out of ur next paycheck to make your self feel better.
Heres a link to an eBay and PayPal fee calculator. If your start your item at 100 and it sells for 270 plus 10 shipping and handling, your total fees will be about 35 bucks
Once you sell, I recommend buying from sprint if the instant rebate service they're offering is still available at the time of launch. The tax charged on these phones is based on the full retail price and sprint usually has the cheapest out of all of the others.
I personally will be buying fromnbest buy because I put 50 bucks down on may 5th to pre order mine through that "secret pre order" thing they were doing.
So where are you guys going to buy from?

I think this is a pointless thread and is really irrelevant based upon the title. Ill humor you though. ATM im going with Best Buy but if sprint expands their new activation credit from another carrier thing that gives you $125 off the phone then it will be Sprint and the Sprint store I am near is not doing Pre-orders.

Much better thread then the another released date one.
So what you are saying is if Best Buy sells the phone for an extra $100 then everyone else, say $599, that is the price I will be paying tax on? Do you have to pay the tax on the full price of the device anywhere you go? If that is the case, I wish I didn't put $50 down at BB because that just seems wrong!
Can someone confirm this is how it works....

Its to what YOU pay. Lets say sprint is the only one that gave an instant rebate and all other places you have to mail it in. $200-50=150*1.07(for 7%)=$160.50 vs 200*1.07=214-50=164. OK so the difference is 164-160.5=$3.50. So it costs you
roughly a gallon of gas. Nothing to fret about. Also Best Buy has reward zone stuff and well the people that work there usually aren't as dumb as the people that work in a sprint store.
Also in reference to your $100 more that would cost you $7 in tax. Basically take the difference and multiply it by your tax. add the 1 in front of the decimal to add the tax or add a 0 to find out how much the tax is.

I understand the math but thought I would be paying the tax on $200 and not on $600 from Best Buy. So it is actually $400 more then I ws expecting to pay tax on and we are about .0875% here. If you trade in your device, do they give you the tax for it like when you trade in a car?
when I preordered mine at best buy the guy who rang me up told me that the gift card is refundable. I'm pretty sure bsed on past experience that best buy is going to charge 599 for full retal and sprint is going to charge 499. So pretty much you're looking at a 10 dollar dfference if the tax rate in your area is 10%! 50-60 dollars.
Wow that's pretty much the 50 down payment

i'm gonna order from my sprint premiere account on the 21st (gonna check @ midnight, i know, terrible)
and i should get no later then the 23rd.
im gona get mine at best buy because in oregon i can get a real deal. probobly around 250 with my 2 year upgrade in september
I already purchased two from wirefly. 179.99 no tax, free shipping and 50 bucks off when used with my BofA add it up. I might have to wait a few extra days after launch but I am patient. So out the door 129.99. This is of course upgrade price.
I went in to Sprint to preorder mine today. This is a corporate store and I asked about the mail in rebate, he told me they are going to be using mail in rebates again with the EVO 3D. He may not have been right, but I do remember when Sprint stopped mail in rebates they said it would be temporary.

I have read elsewhere on here that Best Buy charged people tax on the total cost of the phone. I have no reason to disbelieve these people but that was not my experience. When I purchased my evo from BB last year, I was only charged tax on what I actually paid for the phone. I'm not complaining but I do wonder why this is not uniform all over.

It depends on the state. From what I've read, that's how it works in California. Stores don't get to decide how they charge sales tax on items people buy...state/local government does that for them and they just pass it along to us .

That's only if you order online I think. I recently upgraded one of my lines and had to pay the $18 'upgrade fee'. I tried a couple times to get them to credit it back since I've never had to pay an activation fee because of my work discount, but they just told me their policies changed and it was a 'valid' fee lol. They said the only time it was not charged was online orders only. I can activate/switch as many phones as I want using the online activation thing and not get charged...but having the guy at the store punch in a few numbers costs me $18.
Just Bought mine from WireFly moments ago, $179.99 Free Shipping.
Wirefly is ok but if you have a problem with the phone it is 100% harder to get it fixed replaced because they do not have local stores.
For 20$ more ill go with best buy.Plus if in 5 months if you take the phone off that line they can hit you up for 300$
I got 1 evo from them and had a lot of problems.

i've heard/read nothing but bad things about wirefly. i wouldn't know personally b/c i've never used them. is there a perk to preorder with best buy over preordering with local sprint store? seems like i will pay tax/upgrade fee in both places.
I just switched to to sprint. I had the Nexus S 4G but i had reception issues, so I went and got the EVO. I'm gonna return that when the EVO 3D comes out atBest Buy.

Radioshack - $10 off evo3d and 20% off accessories

You should be able to get $10 off of the evo 3d using a $10 off $40 purchase by reviewing a recent purchase from a radioshack (I did the giftcard/preorder purchase): Link to survey
If you checkin using foursquare, you can get accessories for 20% off if it's your first checkin at that radioshack. You may also have to do a second order if you can't use both coupons at once.
Here's a link to find radioshacks near you. If you see an orange 'special' logo next to your radioshack, they should be participating in the 20% off for 1st check in deal. Click on the link and look to the right for the Newbie Special.
Exclusions for the foursquare deal are listed below (the $10 off $40 does not exclude cell phones):
[email protected] said:
The official answer for your question is that the exclusions are as follows: Post Paid wireless phones, Apple products, gaming hardware/software, laptops/netbooks/desktops, tablets, gift cards, services, special orders, and online and phone orders excluded. The offer may not be combined with any other offer. No cash value.

Actually it isn't ymmv it should work 100% because every radioshack runs this promotion. I emailed them last month because I didn't see the orange special logo next to the store I pre ordered with. They got back to me a couple days later beacuse they forwarded my question to my local district radioshack ceo and they told me that they informed that radioshack to accept the 4square coupon and they also made a new 4square page with the orange special logo and got rid of the old one. Every Radioshack is supposed to accept this deal no matter what, so if you have any doubt at all just email them asking if they could inform your store about the deal and make it so that there is an orange special logo next to your store.
Also do you have any idea if I can use the $10 off $40 and the 20% 4square coupon at the same time? I have had the $10 off coupon since I preordered my E3d and I forgot to ask in my email.
They might not b able to ring it up.but if you can get this it make me feel, less bad about my preoder now that wirefly has it for 150 although a week later and tax less

Yeah... I bought my EVO at RS. They said I could get money off accessories... but they didn't have anything for the evo... they had a couple of generic cases but that was about it, and they were over priced. This time I preordered from Sprint.
I tried to use the exact coupon when I got my Epic 4G at RadioShack. They wouldn't let me use the 10$ off because it doesn't apply to cellphones.
Will work on accessories though.

Here is the exclusions from the $10 off coupon for a purchase of $40. Mine is different from the one posted earlier:
*This coupon has a unique code and is valid for one use only. Must surrender coupon at time of redemption. Multiple printouts or photocopies will not be accepted. Offer valid with coupon through July 9, 2011. Limit one coupon per person. Laptop/netbook/tablet computers, Apple® products, gaming hardware/software, gift cards, services, refurbished GPS are excluded. May not be combined with certain other discounts. No cash value. No photocopies. Void where prohibited. RadioShack reserves the right to end or change this offer at any time.
I don't see the cell phone exclusion, but I don't like the comment RadioShack reserves the right to end or change this offer at any time. I am going to try.

Nice vague wording..."Certain other discounts" could mean $75/$150 off from Sprint and invalidate the coupon. Who knows, we will just have to wait and see, I guess.
"Well, here's this coupon, but we can change it any time for any reason. And it may already be expired, but if not, we might not accept it anyway."
Whatever

Evo LTE Tax in California

Can anyone confirm if Evo LTE's purchased directly from Sprint in California are charged sales tax on the full, unsubsidized price?
Are Best Buy and Radio Shack charging tax on the discounted price?
I can't speak on the EVO LTE specifically, but every other phone I've purchased through Sprint, Radio Shack, and Best Buy has had tax on the full, unsubsidized price. The only exception was a WP7 device I purchased from the Microsoft Store for a penny, I think. I know this doesn't help, per se, but I don't see why Best Buy, Sprint, or Radio Shack would work different this time around. That's why I order from Amazon.
Also, haha, I initially thought (via thread title) that you were saying California was going to be taxing the use of LTE service.
Thanks, I've seen comments on other threads about Sprint corporate charging sales tax on the unsubsidized price, but Best Buy charging on the discounted price.
I would like to confirm what is happening now.
I just got off the phone with Best Buy and they said that per state law they are required to tax you on the retail cost.

I've purchased all my phones from Sprint or Bestbuy and I can confirm that they both charge tax on the full price.
- Samsung Instinct (sprint)
- Samsung Moment (sprint)
- HTC Hero (BB)
- Samsung Epic 4G (BB)
- Samsung Epic Touch (BB)
- Apple iPhone 4S (BB)
- Apple iPhone 4 (BB)
I got the original Evo 4G for $109 from wirefly when it first came out using the bing cash back option. I also got in on the $119 friends and family thing wirefly had going. Very happy even though I have to wait. I should also mention I got a free upgrade from 2 day shipping to next business day with them by asking through chat.

Have you received your phone and final invoice yet? From the various threads, I understand that Sprint is charging local tax (7.25-8.75% depending on city) on the full 549.99 price.
Likewise, I'm seeing different quotes on whether Best Buy is collecting tax on the 199.99 or 549.99. Has anyone picked up their phone in a California Best Buy yet?
How can one be charged sales tax for an item on an amount that is more than the value of the actual sale/invoice amount?

Ditto.
I pre-ordered mine from Sprint tele-sales on 5/7. All I paid for was $199 for the phone and $12.72 for shipping, for a total of $212.71. I was surprised because the last two years I had bought my Evo 4G and 3D from Radio Shack and paid tax on the full price and the activation fee. The only reason I went through them was for the instant rebate. This year was MUCH better going through Sprint!!!!!!!

Pre-ordered mine from Best Buy SoCal and sure did come to roughly $253. So if you go the route of buying in person in California you will get taxed up the wazoo! Tax by itself was $50.30 and Sprint does the exact same. When I bought the Evo 3d last year it def was a tax of $50 or so at Sprint store. Sucks
