GSM Galaxy Nexus with no ROM or a proper CWM recovery! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everybody!
I recently flashed a ParanoidAndroid rom and was trying it, but it was laggy for me and kept crashing.
Anyway, I wanted to restore to the backup I made after rooting the phone, but at first I couldn't, since CWM kept telling me "No Files Found!".
However I managed to start the restore using Rom Manager ( updated CWM from 5.5.0.4 to 6.something). While restoring, CWM tells me that Data recovery failed, now I navigated to reboot, but it told something about returning to Stock or something like that, then I stupidly pressed NO!
The X sign showed up, but it just crashed and rebooted. Then I figured out I'd Re-flash PA, since it's still there on my phone's storage. So I did a wipe, then wanted to install PA rom, only I couldn't find it :/
And now even CWM won't enter, it keeps giving me that open android figure with the red exclamation above it.
Can abybody PLEASE help me?!

it's worse now :/
I tried using odin but with no success, and I know I have the right usb cable and the right drivers, but in the two roms I tried (ParanoidAndroid and CM10.1) both only have a .IMG file, so I converted them to .tar using GalaxyNexusToolkit, it says it passed after operating for like 5 seconds, but the phone is stuck at Google logo and that's it. And tried GNexToolkit to use the .img files, but it only flashed .img but not the whole thing,
Also I managed to flash the new CWM Recovery using GNexToolkit, but it didn't do anything when I press restore, it just says "Couldn't open directory. No files found.", also I screwed with it up a "bit" erasing system, sdcard, cache and everything. And now when I turn on CWM, it says "E:can't mount /cache/recover/command & /cache/recovery/log & /cache/recovery/last_log"
I understand I need to Re-Partition the phone, but I can't seem to find a way to do so, and that I need .pit files that I are extinct as far as I know :/
Help me Please :crying:

Cannot Flash - no ptn table

Hello all!
I'm having an issue with my SGS2 Skyrocket. I was attempting to flash on a new ROM (Darkside, not important, you'll see why). I did a full wipe, then went to transfer the .zip file over in CWM. I was in a hurry, and didn't think to wait til it had transferred all the way (in Linux, didn't give me a pop up about it, wasn't thinking). So I unplugged it. Now my CWM is gone, in recovery it boots into Odin. In Odin when I attempt to flash anything on, it gives me a 'no ptn table' error on the phone screen, and it just flat fails on the PC. I've tried the unbrick forum guide, to no avail. Any suggestions? (The CWM was the one installed by ROM Manager if that is important, the ROM was Cyanogenmod 9)
Suggestion:
try your own forum.
Oh. Crap. That would explain why it didn't work, and why I now can't boot my phone. Crap.

[Q] Stuck at boot logo after root

Hello.
I have a GT-i9305 andI tried the rooting by following the instructions at http://galaxys3root.com/ on my Ubuntu laptop with heimdall.
I managed to install the recovery and also flash the cwm zip. I saw som problems related to /cache/ so I wiped cache and after that I have not been able to get past boot logo. I hav ealso tried flashing a custom rom and doing a factory reset and wipe dalvik cache bu
t it did not help. I have tried Odin and flashing from a .tar.md5 file but it results in FAIL.
I can reach both download mode and recovery but that is all.
Please help, I need my phone.
did you use a i9300 method on your i9305? you've probably killed the phone.
flash a stock ROM via Odin (i9305 one) and factory reset from recovery. if that doesn't help - send it to Samsung.
And this is the i9300 section, you're in the wrong place
Thanks.
I got back to stock. I will try to use the i9305 method.
Mount /sdcard not possible
Wel, I have the same problem.
Samsung SIII International version. After installing a new rom (believe it was "jellybam-v6.1.0_i9300-STABLE.zip") but I am not sure, the phone boots only to the original logo and then the screen goes black. Nothing more.
I can get into recovery mode and download mode so I tried several recovery versions (CWM, TEAMWIN, latest ClockworModRecovery v 6.0.2.8.) and several ROM.
No mater what I install, I get the same results. Boot phone and it hangs after the standard Samsung logo.
I was able to find out "/sdcard" could not be mounted. All the recovery programs I used with the option "mount unmount" reporting the same "/sdcard could not be mount" error.
Formatting /sdcard all so won't work.
I am thinking installing a new kernel but I have some difficulties in finding witch one will work with my phone?
Any suggestions or help is really appreciated b/c I have no idea what to do next.
Samsung I9300
Win 7
Latest USB drivers from Samsung installed
No Kies installed.
Odin3_v3.07 installed.
Using Odin I flashed:
CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar
recovery-cwmtouch-6.0.2.8-GTI9300.tar
recovery-stock-dlj4-GTI9300.tar
recovery-stock-blg9-GTI9300.tar
And a few more.
Due to being unable to acces the phone installing a zip file is not possible. Using "installing a rom from zip, or sdcard" from recovery is not possible.
I tried installing a file using sideload but was not succesfull. I can get the phone in receiving a file from sideload but was unable to send a file from the PC.
Thanx in advance
you have to do a factory reset after flashing a new rom
Did wipe/clear/factory set etc every time just to find the phone goes black after the Samsung logo.
One particular thing: I can see the /sdcard in some recovery programs but can't modify it.
How can I transfer a zip file using Sideload?
I can get into "download a file using Sideload" on my phone but what should I do to get a zip file transferred. Maybe then I can use "install from zip" from a recovery.
Update Problem solved (for me) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2162908
I flashed the 9305 firmware from here http://www.samfirmware.com/ in Odin then I was back to stock.
Then I rooted the phone by this instruction.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/4...-lte-android411-android412-jellybean-root.htm
I have not tried a custom rom but I think it should work.

Stuck in CWM ! NO ADB

This is my first time rooting my device and all that, I'm still a noob and forever will be.
anyway I followed the normal steps where you download Odin and everything went fine and my phone was still working now I had to update the CWM version to 6.0.4 or something so I downloaded the Kit-Kat compatible zip file and upgraded the version to what I wanted it to be.
Now I read in one of the steps that I need to backup my files and so I did but now I can't recover it and my phone doesn't turn on I'm stuck in CWM I can still see my files on the phone and when I restore it does name the files I already had but my phone does not work just goes black ...so either CWM or a black screen.
My PC does not recognize the phone, Kies doesn't either.
Did I nuke my phone?

i can't understand: are you able to access CWM (using the three button combination) or you can't even turn on your phone?
If you can access CWM, go in "mounts and storage" and select "mount USB storage", then connect your phone to the computer and see if it is recognized

Never mind, I figured it out, thanks anyway
Hi all,
I am in the same situation, but can't figure it out.... I wanted to upgrade to Kitkat so I downloaded Supernexus 4.0 but the install from zip fails everytime I attempt it.. So I'm stuck in the CWM and I don't have a backup ROM to install...
I checked the md5 sum of the ROM, it's ok.
I wipe the /data partition, the cache and the dalvik cache before installing from zip..
I installed the last CWM version (v6.0.4.5).
I don't know what to do next because the only ROM I have in my phone is the supernexus 4.0 which cannot be installed and I cannot mount my phone using "mount USB storage" in CWM, my PC doesn't see the phone mass storage..
Any idea ?
Thanks,
Hervé

Always keep a working kernel/rom .zip in you internal memory so if you are stuck you don't need to use Odin!
Try to use another USB port or another computer to see if it is recognized, or if you have a MicroSD load a rom on that and insert it in your phone.
if not, you have to use Odin and flash a kernel or rom using the pc.

Accidentally wiped system and can't install rom in cwm or spflash

Hello,
I searched in many threads as I could and although I learned that mediatek phones were virtually "unbrikable", I'm afraid it keeps getting worse and won't do more without your expertise.
So a few days ago I was wiping my phone to install another rom and besides wiping data and cache, I also made the huge mistake of wiping SYSTEM... My phone now just boots into recovery and nothing else.
I have an Efox Smart e4, equals to no.1 s6 and hdc galaxy s4 according to other posts here. MTK 6589, 1gb internal, 1,84gb internal sd.
The first custom rom that i installed was Essefour no.1 s6 by iceman and also the touch recovery. The rom performed great but I wanted to solve the issue that the phone kept switching between sd external and internal randomly. Also, I wanted to merge the internal memory with the internal sd so I was gonna try another rom. With this problem, was even trying the stock rom but to no avail.
When I try to install the Smart e4 factory rom for cwm and I get status 7.
E:Resource type (image) failed to load
Installing /sdcard/SMART-E4_V1.0_V01_2013-10-29_CWM.zip

Other roms it just fails.
Right now, my computer windows 8.1 x64 can't identify correctly my phone, only access the sd. So can't do any adb push. In download mode it identifies as lenovo composite interface?? and cdc serial, the last I can't install. In other modes, I get gt-9500 but with the yellow triangle.
I would really really appreciate any help, thanks!
Might try to just edit the updater-script and remove the asserts.
Reference this for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522762
But I think your issue is that since you wiped the system, there's no /tmp folder to store the boot.img. However, if the last rom and this rom can use the same kernel (boot.img) then removing the assert for the boot.img install might do it since wiping the system does not affect the kernel.
What happened to the other rom you know is working somewhat? Can you just reflash that?
Otherwise, you'll just have to find the official way to flash with the scatter file and all that.
I searched for that updater and there are no lines for assert on the stock rom. Also inside the main zip, there are zips for system, boot, recovery and logo...
I'm trying to install the stock rom to play it safe since it was the same that came with the phone. The previous rom I talked about, I deleted it and now the phone isn't recognized on the computer..
Since I don't know if they have the same kernels, is it safe to try and reinstall the custom rom?
As of using scatter and such, maybe I need other pc to get the drivers running again.
Will let you know
I got it!!
The zip from the stock rom wouldn't let me install the kernel (boot). Managed to install only the rom, and as you said the kernel wasn't the same.
Eventually I reinstalled the custom rom and afterwards flashed a completely different rom via spflash tools since it connected successfully to my computer this time.
As I'm already restoring apps and data, I think everything is working properly.
Once more, thank you very much

Samsung S3 error on installing custom rom and now can't run my backup

Hi,
I have a samsung S3 and I want to update it to lollipop or above as my nexus 5 has started randomly rebooting and I need a phone to use whilst I sort a replacement.
I have been following this guide: wccftech.com/install-aosp-android-5-1-1-lollipop-on-galaxy-s3/ as I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this custom rom business.
I have rooted the device and installed clockworkmod recovery v6.0.1.2. and copied over the rom and the gapps file to my phone.
I then booted into recovery mode and made a backup of the current setup.
I then did the factory reset and the cache wipe(s) and installed the new zip for lollipop and then the gapps.
This is where I received an error "E: Error in /sdcard/0/0/0/Download/gapps-lp-20150314.zip (status 7) installation aborted".
I figured that I should restore to my backup now but when I press it, the app says that files can't be found.
I can see that the files that I backed up do exist but they appear to have been dumped inside a new directory called /0/0/0 (I think this has got three levels because I've tried this a few times).
Now I can't boot into an OS to get any other roms on the phone and I can't edit the files on there (I googled and saw a possible fix for the gapp status 7) and I can't get clockworkmod to recognise an external SD card so I can copy over a new rom or file to try (I have googled and it's suggested the FAT32 is the format for this phone and my size of SD card (16GB)).
Can anyone offer me some advice on how to get out of this situation?
Thanks
Sounds like you're at a place where you should start exploring using your computer instead of a recovery in order to fix your system.
I recommend using the PC software Odin and installing a stock ROM of your device. (Or perhaps using fastboot)
There's plenty of guides on how to use Odin both here on XDA and on the rest of the internet if you just look around a bit
EDIT: This link contains a (possible) fix for your problem.

Don't use cwm as it is an outdated recovery. Use twrp instead.

I had a look at the link you suggested and it's one of the suggestions that had come up whilst I was googling for a fix. Unfortunately, I don't have any way to get the updated script onto the phone as the phone isn't picked up by my pc whilst it's in this state, and I can't get the recovery tool to recognise the sd card so I can't put it on there either.
I'll take a look at the stock rom or fastboot option and see if I can get back into the phone. Maybe then I can apply the fix in the suggested post.
Thanks

I'll see if I can install twrp through odin.
Thanks for your help
If the phone works in download mode, try to flash a stock rom too.
Update - fixed
Hi all, just wanted to let you know that I fixed the device with the combined advice from here:
I installed TWRP after holding the volume down + power + home buttons and then pressing volume up when the message appears (I can't remember what this mode is called). I then flashed the device with the TWRP image.
After this I rebooted into the TWRP recovery mode (Volume up + home + power and then release power button when the samsung logo appears).
At this point, the device appeared on my windows machine so I could upload a new image to the internal memory.
I decided to copy on CM13 and GApps.
I then wiped the cache, system, data, and davik cache using TWRP, then I installed CM13 and GApps.
After a reboot the device came back up as a new install.
Hopefully that information may be useful to somebody.
Thanks for all your help
