Hello,
I have spent the majority of my day at class researching information, but between obsolete information and broken English in some posts, it's hard to tell what currently works and what doesn't. Unfortunately using the search is difficult because most threads with old information will have the exact same keywords and as diligent as I try to be, reading hundreds of pages of various threads is a bit daunting. Add in "important" information in oversized red text that is no longer applicable and broken links... I would just like information from people who have more experience with this specific phone and have been around recently to know current developments.
Tomorrow FedEx will be delivering a shiny new Incredible 4G LTE (Verizon). My intentions with the phone are
1) A recovery capable of doing backup/restores, be it TWRP or Clockworkmod or similar, I'm not picky.
2) The ability to install Cyanogenmod 10.1
3) The ability to run root apps (which obviously is possible if 2 is possible, just stating to be clear)
I have previously successfully rooted my Incredible 1 and 2, as well as a Samsung Mesmerize and Stratosphere. In my research on the 4G, I have seen many bits of information and methods, but also some stuff that is new to me such as HTCDev and that S-Off isn't as important as it used to be. I've been on my Incredible 2 running Cyanogenmod 7.2 and Tiamat 1.1.5 kernel for months now, but it's no longer charging my battery and it's time to upgrade.
As of 4/16, is it possible to get my phone to do what I requested above, and what methods are required?
I have researched HTCDev, Dirty Racun, Fireballas' work, the All-in-One unlocker, SuperCID'ing... I would just like somebody to take this nasty bag of snakes and lay it out straight for me -- which method currently (April 2013) is capable of getting my phone unlocked to the point that I can install Cyanogenmod?
My computer is running Windows 7 x64, but I can install any other operating system necessary (Preferably Windows-based) to get this done. I do not have any USB 3.0 ports, which I heard cause issues.
Thank you to anybody who actually read my wall of text

In order
1. Recovery: Yes, CWM and TWRP though you will need S-off or Unlock Bootloader first, of course. Follow the supercid thread to unlock bootloader here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986346
My personal choice, as you avoid having to go through HTCdev, is S-Off. Then just flash recovery of your choice,
DirtyRacoon here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029544
or
Facepalm here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2215750.
I used DirtyRacoon myself, came out 1st and is probably most used, (I am assuming), though there isn't much support for it through this forum. I don't know much about the Facepalm method. Read up......
Recovery
CWM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077608
TWRP here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081547
2. CM 10.1: Yes.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121331 It is pretty stable too.
3. Run Root apps.... Well yes, since 1 and 2 are in play, this goes without saying.
Hope this helps
Awesome, thank you much. I will report back tomorrow how it goes.

WELL, Welcome to the community. Have fun.
Lots to choose from. Personally, I went with DirtyRacun so I didn't need to go through HTCDev at all. There should be live IRC support for DirtyRacun available on the unlimited site, but be warned - follow their directions exactly or they may not help.
I believe facepalm requires HTCDev. Like DavDoc said, read up.
The non s-off method is probably the safest, but you will need to do extra steps when flashing ROMs.
If you are coming from an OG Dinc, you are probably used to CWM (my preference), but give both TWRP and CWM try to see which you like best. mdmower did an amazing job with both of these recoveries for the Dinc4g.
If you get stuck anywhere, the community here is great (as you've seen above).
Welcome to the community, and good luck with whichever you choose.

Currently having issues... didn't know DirtyRacun is now Linux-only...
Attempting Facepalm but it's weird because it's initial message is "You must be rooted/SuperCID'd."... while running SuperCID has the batch fault out at UNLOCKS2 (Bad CHOICE command)
SuperCID seems to loop and now my phone is stuck in the "status bar only" setting... gonna do the RUU flash again. Glad I have a MicroSD-to-USB adapter
----------
This time I used the 'manual steps' in the SuperCID thread, I've got it Unlocked but S-On, with Clockworkmod installed successfully, Superuser also installed. Used Facepalm to S-Off.
Phone is now successfully S-Off, Unlocked, with CWM.
Now the only question -- why does Cyanogenmod's site no longer show any stable builds of CM10.1 for Fireball?!

I was running the SuperCID's "RunMe" script under Windows 7 x64.
This specific portion of the script faulted:
Code:
:UNLOCKS2
fastboot oem readcid
echo.
echo Just above, you should see (bootloader) cid: 11111111
echo.
echo 1) Yes, my cid is 11111111. Keep going.
echo 2) No, my cid is VZW__001. Factory reset and try again.
echo 3) No, my cid is VZW__001. Exit the script.
echo.
set /p opt=Select an option:
if %opt% == 1 goto UNLOCKS3
if %opt% == 2 goto FACRESET
if %opt% == 3 goto GIVEUP
echo.
echo Please enter a valid number (1-3)
echo.
goto UNLOCKS2
As soon as it attempted to display this, it faulted out and dropped me to the command prompt.
I was able to just use the manual commands to get everything working. Now I just need a good download of CM10.1 to install. All that's on their site at the moment is nightly and snapshot.

Honestly, so far not liking CM10.1. Just off the top of my head...
1) I don't appear to have the 'live weather' lockscreen like Sense has
2) Disregard #2, found "Show overflow" for missing menu keys
3) Hit Google Voice, now my keyboard doesn't work, even after rebooting. I may have neglected to reinstall GApps after the "snapshot" build didn't work properly (Wouldn't enable Bluetooth at all)
Which nightly are you using?

I find it hard to believe that there is no step-by-step out there, so I'm just going to assume that I'm really bad at internet searching and apologize for posting a question that surely must be answered somewhere out there...
I ultimately want to try out the newest ICS leak (depending on whether Flash works on it?), but it seems that the best first step is to get S-Off on my rooted, stock Gingerbread Rezound.
But I can't find a simple step-by-step instruction set anywhere... Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I downloaded a toolkit from hasoon2000 that's supposed to make things easy, but I don't know what to do with it.
hasoon2000 links to instructions that only show a video and assume I know how to use something called Juopunutbear(?).
It seems that every tidbit of information I can find is only partial...
Where can I find a step-by-step, beginning-to-end guide to get S-Off for a rooted Rezound? Am I missing something?
Prerequisites
- Must be on a stock Gingerbread ROM OR The 3.14.605.5 ICS Leak <---- NO OTHER ICS LEAKS BUT THIS ONE!
- Must be HTCDev unlocked
- Must be rooted
1. Install HTC Drivers
2. Go to www.HTCDev.com
2a. Follow instructions and unlock your bootloader/Device.
2b. flash a rooted rom/gain root access
3. Get a fresh microSD card or backup yours because s-off will delete everything on it.
4. After unlocking run the toolkit which will push you through s-off(Juno-w/e)
4a. Get a length of insulated wire about 8 or so inches, then when the Toolkit cmd prompt says to, ground it outThe pins you touch are in this picture.
5. If it worked, you'll be s-off'd, install a recovery & rom.
If still confused just ask, I'll try my best to walk you through it.

The instructions are detailed on the unlimited.io site...

When we speak of this "leak" for the rezound that means that we took ics 4.0 from another phone and ported it over.. so what is the leak vs porting it. When rezoind does finally get our 4.0 update , what perks will that bring us even though we have the "leak" or "port" ...we will be able to have aosp roms right

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the leaks are not ported and they ARE for the Rezound. When the ota comes, I don't think it will be much different from what we have now (3.14.605.10).
I believe the source will have to be dropped for AOSP.

The Rezound is getting Sense 3.6 with it's OTA update, the newer HTC ICS based phones are getting Sense 4.0.
The leaks are Sense 3.6 builds specific for the Rezound, the ports are Sense 4.0 based roms for other phones made to work on the Rezound.
So what exactly is the benefit to S-OFF? I tried to do it, but bricked my rezound. Luckily, Verizon exchanged it as DOA, and so I'm all good for now.

Easier flashing (don't have to create a ph98img.zip file any more) edit boot screen (my favorite reason) and be able to flash between different firmwares (this is a big deal).
Hmmm. Well, I've done all that with S-ON. I've got a custom ROM, custom recovery, custom boot animation (a JB one posted somewhere on this site), and the ICS leaked firmware. I don't remember using PH98IMG.ZIP (rather it was other zips), though I was pretty excited to play with a new phone, so I could be forgetting. Actually, now that I'm thinking more on it, I did flash the PH98IMG.ZIP when I put CleanROM on the phone, and so I suppose that also put the updated firmware on it.

The ability to do Nandroid restores and have it flash the boot.img without needing any help scripts or doing it manually via fastboot was my main reason for doing it..

By "edit boot screen" he meant the splash screen before the boot animation (the blindingly bright white HTC screen). This can't be changed without having S-OFF.
The PH98IMG.zip you flashed with CleanROM was to update the kernel, not your firmware. Since you are S-ON, it won't install the boot.img in recovery during the ROM flash, so it uses a separate file to flash it in the bootloader. Otherwise, no boot.img = phone isn't booting (obviously).

To have call recording capabilities I would have to have s off becuae to record a call without an app depends on the kernel correct.

I used the control bear s off tool tonight, after many, many...many times I finally got s-off. But now the only thing I have is the modified boot loader. I tried too use adb to push recovery and boot images and it would say success, but would actually never boot into them, it would just stay on the white and green HTC screen. Any help is appreciated of course, I just need to get booted up.

Fortunately, I'm starting with a rooted Rezound already.
3. Blank microSD is no problem.
4. I don't know what "run the toolkit" means... or what "Juno" means. The top middle button of the toolkit I downloaded just refers me to webpages with confusing instructions and a broken video link (found the video elsewhere). I don't know which toolkit button I'm supposed to push, and nothing tells me which one helps me get S-Off. So... This is where I'm stuck.

I'm sure the correct info is at that link, but there's so much information... And it seems like everyone refers to the same things by different names? ... JuopunutBear? ControlBear? But I'm not sure? It just isn't written for people who don't understand this stuff...

ON the toolkit...isn't there a "Run Juopunutbear V.6If....." in the left hand box? Run the one that corresponds to the firmware you have. You have GB so run the first one. Make sure you have read and know how to do the wire trick.
JuopunutBear is the name of the group that developed the s-off process...ControlBear is the name of the program file that is run to achieve it. Hansoons tool apparently downloads the programs you need to do everything. Follow the steps.
If you don't understand the terms bootloader, hboot, recovery..Read up on them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641670
Don't worry about flashing a new hboot, just keep the one you have when you're done.
Also, I found it helpful to have a computer that could read the SD card. Just in case you need to download something to it for you phone.
Thanks for the update... So here are the simple instructions I'm following now:
1. - 2. Root device.
3. Backup microSD.
4. Select "Run Juopunutbear v.6 If You Are On Gingerbread" in Hasoon2000's S-Off toolkit, then click Run
5. Use insulated wire to connect Pin 1 and GND for two seconds when cmd prompt says "Do wire-trick now!! Look instructions at web"
... So what happens next? Does my device reboot as usual? Do I have to re-unlock? Re-root? Re-install amon recovery? In other words... Did it change anything other than giving me S-Off and wiping the microSD card?

Getting there.
The wire trick..DON'T touch the contacts for 2 seconds. Touch them TWICE in 1.75 seconds. Example...touch..1.75s......touch.... Hold the wire firmly down in the hole to insure contact and just touch the gnd twice.
AFter, you do have to reinstall amon recovery...DON"T UNLOCK... no reason to. Again, it is a good backup to have a SD card reader available.
EDIT: If you want to be able to use fastboot commands after, then you do need to flash the Joupunut Hboot that is offered to you at the end of the process. I didn't. I just find flashable files for my needs.
I am the cause of this problem, and hope someone can help to extricate me.
I bought my Rezound in April, excited that ICS was coming. I soon found the leaked ICS 4.0.3/Sense 3.6 and installed the leak, and have been (largely) happily enjoying it. There have been some small issues, and when I read that Verizon was finally sending ICS out to the Rezound, I checked and found that I couldn't get it unless my phone was put back to GB. That's when the problem started.
I've tried numerous ROMs, but really don't know what I'm doing, and after almost 20 hours of reading the various posts and searches, am no farther to a resolution than where I started yesterday.
The phone, no matter what I try to load, boots fine until it hits the 4G LTE screen and then freezes. Here's the HBOOT/FASTBOOT screen:

It's easy.... if you like AOSP/CM9, I'd recommend the "le n00b" ROM in the dev section. If you like Sense 3.6, try Vigor360. If you like Sense 4, I really liked ViperRom. Just go to the OP of any thread for those, download the newest version to a PC or onto your SD card.
Then, go check out Scotty's noob friendly guide to rooting on AndroidForums (there might be an equivelent thread here, but I used this guide). I recommend using Amon Ra as your recovery, which is linked toward the top of the first post.

if you want to go aosp you will need to s-off the phone to get there.
but you are on the latest update. you can only run roms built off the global ruu such as:

to flash said roms you will need to htc dev unlock and then flash a recovery and then you can do any of the three roms above. if you want to be on a rom that is build off an older release you will need to s-off the phone.

Thanks a bunch. I've opened Scotty's guide to read next, and have downloaded Amon Ra (recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img.zip). I've looked up some comparisons between Sense 3 & 4, which should help me make an informed decision. Thanks again for the guidance and suggestions.

but you are on the latest update. you can only run roms built off the global ruu such as:
to flash said roms you will need to htc dev unlock and then flash a recovery and then you can do any of the three roms above. if you want to be on a rom that is build off an older release you will need to s-off the phone.

Thanks synisterwolf.
I'll look at the roms you recommended and appreciate the information and wisdom you shared.
I'll also check out the organizations listed in your signature.
Thanks again.
I would use hasoons toolkit to unlock and install amon ra. The 4.03.605.2 RUU runs smooth and quick.

Unfortunately, Scotty's guide won't work for me, as its unlock with htcdev section requires the Rezound to connect to my PC via usb, but the phone's somewhat bricked, locking up at the 4G LTE screen and won't connect.
I would surely appreciate other suggestions. Plemelin recommended hasoons toolkit, and I will look at it now.

For Scotty's guide, you're clearly on the HTC Unlock stage, maybe you should find the latest RUU and flash that? It'll have all parts of the phone's system (ROM, bootloader, recovery, radios, etc), so you'll have a clean phone (meaning all data will be wiped), and all the different pieces will work together and you should be able to boot into the stock ROM, then follow the guide from there starting with the HTC unlock. I think where you were at in post #1, you had all the ICS/global firmware but were trying to boot a gingerbread ROM which will fail every time. If you use an RUU, everything will be in sync.

Nice, that's the original version which started this journey. I had downloaded it prior to starting all this, and messed up my Rezound by not doing it correctly. Now it's the one which (finally) worked. I don't know how it worked, unfortunately, as it didn't work exactly like Scotty told me it would, and the first few times I tried to install it were unsuccessful also.
Thanks again.
It's alive!
Thank you all for your help. Your replies encouraged me and directed me toward the solution.
Scotty's guide worked, although not exactly like it said it would. I now have the version I originally wanted, and it all works, except for the SU.
I installed CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip per Scotty, but I have don't have the SU ability. Undoubtedly did something wrong.
Thanks again.

If you're using SU, then open up the app by going into the app drawer and see if there's a way for you to "update the binary". The binary is the meat and bones of the superuser app, and for some reason it's not working well out of the box on some roms, and you need to update it to get it working.

Hello! I used to be very engrossed in the modding community for the Rezound a few months ago. But because of a forced phone switch I haven't been in the loop for a while.
Well now I'm back on a Rezound and I was wanting to know a few things.
Fair warning. When I left we had just achieved S-off and were delving into the new things we could do from then on, so if my questions seem dated; I'm sorry.
Also, my phone atm is on stock ICS, I wanted to get a feel for everything again before I went and rooted it.
*Which are the most prominent ROMs right now? (Preferrably sense with beats)
*Do any of those ROMs have a working DSP Manager with Virtual room or ability to get it working on it?
*What is this whole GSM thing I'm seeing on some ROMs lists? Are we able to use the rezound easily overseas or on different networks now or something?
I have looked through some of the forums but haven't been able to find any concrete information, so I figured I would just post my own thread.
Thank you for your time and any replies!
The most prominent roms are any of the ones on the first two pages of the development sections. I know that neo includes a Beats mod in his AOSP roms which works as well as any stock beats you'll find in a sense rom. The DSP manager included with cyanogenmod is 100% functional as far as I can tell. And yes, we can use the rezound on AT&T (siul does MIUI and uses his rezound on AT&T) but I'm not sure as to what frequencies we have access to and if its HSPA or not.
Since you've been gone we received a global ruu that gives the rezound service over seas. The most prominent roms sense based are viperrez, newts one xxx, ecliptic rez and so on.. Those are just the ones I've tried. I'm running newts hybrid rom now and it's doing well though it's not as optimized as his one xxx rom

It is. Installed it.
I think I'm all set now except for one thing. Is it normal now after you unlock and install a recovery for it to say TAMPERED? Last I saw that was when people were installing the leaked ICS RUUs.
The order of which I rooted my phone in case I did anything wrong was. Unlock bootloader with HTCDev, Phone restarted, let it load up then went into the menu and enabled Debugging again, shut it off. Reloaded fastboot. Then installed TWRP 2.3.3.0 using the All-in-one tool. After that my bootloader said TAMPERED.
Thanks again for all the help.

Tampered is ok. It just means there's a custom recovery installed. Every now and then TWRP has some issues flashing certain files just so you know, most likely you'll never see it, but just in case it keeps you from chasing your tail I mentioned it.
We're s off now, that's the big change for when you want to do some wild modification. But thanks to snuzzo there's no harm done in being s on it's easier now than it used to be.
Anything else, send me a PM if you'd like and we can catch up on gtalk.
So is your hboot 2.25 and your radio basebands end in .421r and .424r?

Alright, thanks for all the info. Will PM you later.
Everything was fully updated as far as stock goes.
I recently got a HTC Droid DNA on Verizon and it's been stressful getting to the point where I can install custom ROMs from stock. More so than on any of the previous HTC devices I've owned. I've had to glean information from different sources very carefully to achieve this since the majority of the guides out there are outdated, misleading and even brick-bait. This guide is meant to help the recent converts to the Droid DNA go through this process smoothly and safely.
If you follow instructions TO THE LETTER and CAREFULLY and meet ALL the prerequisites for every resource on this post you should have not problems.
Credit goes to the owners and developers of all the resources following most notably beaups, fuses, WindyCityRockr and jcase. These guys have made our device much more powerful and fun to use. None of it is mine. I am neither a dev nor a coder. I just know how to type in basic, decent English
As usual, following this guide is voluntary. You are responsible for your bricked device. Turn on your brain before your proceed. Your warranty will be voided. I suggest you read through the ENTIRE guide and follow the links to all the resources listed before you actually attempt this. If at any point in any of the guides you realize you do not have or have not downloaded any of the resources listed, make sure your get EVERYTHING you need before you proceed. Your best bet is to have a working connection on both your device and computer while you do this. You will need ADB setup and running properly. Pay close attention and note when you have to change a file name and WHERE you need to put the file on your computer before every step.
If that scared you, read no further. Thank you for stopping by.
If any of that excited you, welcome. Proceed.
1. Make sure you actually own a HTC Droid DNA from Verizon Wireless. Not a clone or a lookalike or a butterfly. Make sure ADB is intalled and setup properly on your computer.
2. Start by following (STEP BY STEP AND OMITTING NOTHING. NOTE THE PREREQUISITES) Beaups guide to achieving S-Off using firewater here http://firewater-soff.com/ I followed the guide to gain temproot FIRST and after that followed the steps that apply to a rooted device. I'm not sure it says this in the guide but make sure you copy the temproot and firewater files to your ADB folder immediately after you download them. This guide allows you unlock your bootloader WITHOUT HTC Dev
3. Follow Phaded's guide to installing a custom recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318159
You can get TWRP's latest recovery image here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/dlx Once again, omit nothing. Meet all the requirement before you do a single thing. Download every file and check the MD5 before your proceed. I renamed the TWRP recovery image to "recovery.img" since that is easier to type in a command line and copied the image file to the ADB folder on my computer.
If you have followed every instruction to the letter, you should have S-Off, an unlocked bootloader, root, custom revocery and SU.
4. If you like, you can download the WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit, select your phone type, wait for it to download the appropriate binaries, confirm that it recognizes your device in ADB and fastboot modes and you can use it to perform various operations including update your recovery, issue ADB and fastboot commands and flash a new ROM. You can find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437614
5. Find a ROM of your choice and flash to your heart's content :victory:
Congratulations.
Once again, I take no credit. All I wanted to do was consolidate information that was scattered in different sources to make this easier. Hope this helps someone out there.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this method a few days ago but you made it a bit easier for me (because spanish is my main language).
I can't wait to get my droid dna. This will be my first htc device so I'm going try this method. Thanks a lot!

Firewater takes care of that.
I share your frustrations. I'm going through that now, because only now have i decided to root my phone after almost 2 years of having the phone.
I must ask, would these instructions work with the latest OTA?
Yes, they should. Make sure you use the latest version of Firewater though. Once Firewater does it's thing, you're basically home free.
I can't get firewater to run on my insurance replacement. I tried all the methods on firewater's page.
After running the last command it doesn't bring up any prompt like step 5 says

I had the same issue on Windows. I tried numerous Windows machines and had the same issue as you. But once I got home and plugged into my linux box, I was s-off and unlocked within minutes. Try a Linux system instead of Windows. And make sure you are S-ON or firewater will not do anything.

I will have wait and see if anyone can crack the latest update. My daughter had my phone the other day and brought it to me because it rebooted. She allowed it to update not knowing I didn't want to let it
This is my first time posting on here so I’ll get right to it. I’m currently using a stock HTC EVO 4G LTE, running Android 4.1.1, and I’m interested in flashing the Dirty Unicorns 4.4.4 ROM. I understand how flashing ROMs works and most everything else, except for kernels, but not enough so that I’m entirely confident in doing it without at least some help and advice from people who are more experienced with it. I’ve seen many methods of unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and going s-off such as WinDroid and RegawMOD and other methods, but is there a specific way to do it that’s better than the rest? There seems to be a lot of conflicting sources, some supposedly more simple and/or reliable than others. HTCDev’s unlock tool seems like it should help too, but I’ve only seen someone mention it once saying that it should be used. I don’t know whether or not it is reliable, and if it would limit me in any way or cause any problems. I’m a little hesitant when it comes to the aforementioned solutions because it seems like if they worked well then more people would use them, but maybe I’m just being too cautious haha.
What would be the best way to go from complete stock to the 4.3 RUU that HTC released, which I think Captain_Throwback still has a link to, and then to Dirty Unicorns 4.4.4? I saw that you needed to be on 4.3 to make sure to get the new partition layout. Not asking for someone to list it in a reply or go out of their way to help if it’s listed somewhere else, especially since I’m new to this. Links to reliable tutorials and guides that are trusted and known to work would be greatly appreciated, preferably something more recent. Just worried about missing a step, such as needing to deactivate Google Wallet and making sure HTC Sync Manager is uninstalled and disabled, and using TWRP instead of CWM, all of which I’ve seen mentioned a couple of times. I’m just looking for some guidance as to which tutorial is good and reliable, and maybe a little more simple, since there are so many, and some that seem useful are older.
Sorry if this isn’t the correct place to ask this, and thanks for any help. I know it’s a lot to ask so I don’t expect anyone to go through too much trouble to help; even a preexisting helpful guide would be great. The way I look at it, you can never know too much about all of this kind of stuff, and I want to be careful.
1. Run the 4.13.651.4 RUU. Link & info can be found in the OP of my Hboot guide (1st link in my sig). Afterwards you will need to unlock your bootloader again with HTC Dev.
2. Install TWRP 2.8.0.3. Link can be found in post #3 of the thread below:

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. Mind me asking if there's any easier way to go s-off and unlock the bootloader? I saw RegawMOD mentioned some just because it streamlined the process, but idk if it still works since it goes through HTCDev, and HTC might have blocked it since then. And does the RUU automatically make me use the new partition? I don't know a whole lot about partitions when it comes to this, I saw that DU needed the new partition so I'd just like to make sure I'm using it. Thanks for the help

RegawMod no longer works as a viable option to root your device (it has been blocked by HTC for some time now). The RUU I mentioned will change your partition setup & put you on the new partition layout. Once you've updated via RUU and installed TWRP recovery, I recommend flashing the latest update of SuperSU in recovery, then use the Firewater method to gain S-off before flashing the Dirty Unicorns ROM.
You can get the latest SuperSU file from the link below.

Just to chime in here, but the latest version of DU can use old or new partitions. Not saying that you shouldn't go to the new, because there are many benefits, but just saying that you don't HAVE to in order to run DU ROM.
