I have just rooted my Photon. Pretty happy with it. Wasn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be. Now to overclock it am I gonna have to flash a custom ROM? And if I indeed have to flash a custom ROM, do I have to unlock my bootloader? Or is there a way around that? Thanks for all the info.
There's a few threads floating around about unlocking your bootloader; id be careful though you could possibly break 4G. As far as kernels go, the source was released a week ago so you cant overclock until a dev releases a kernel. You'd need to flash a custom kernel in order to flash roms...
I rooted my phone and left it stock just for a few root apps at least until a new bootloader unlocking method is found and a kernel is ready!
Bootloader thread. Fyi there are ways to retain 4G just check development section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216097
As soon as android.git.kernel.org comes back up I'm going to pull in some source code and see if I can cook up a CyanogenMod kernel.
Cool appreciate all the info guys. And as for the 4G. I don't use it and it's not in my area. So I'm not very worried about that to be quite honest. I'm having trouble tryin' to flash a custom ROM on my phone as of now. I don't seem to be doing it right.
Okay. As you two seem to know what's going on. I just flashed the Laser ROM onto my phone. And the su binary is outdated. But when I update, the superuser force closes. Is this common with custom ROM's? I tried to ask in the development page, but as I don't have enough posts, it wouldn't let me post there. Thanks! Also, as a side note. I didn't seem to have to unlock my bootloader to do the laser ROM but the Alien one says I do? Is this true? Again, I know this isn't the right area. but it's the only place I can post. Thanks again guys.

Assuming you flashed the latest custom recovery right? Also there's an app in the market that helps with the updating of superuser if it fails. Its called "superuser update fixer"; maybe that will help as i didnt have that issue. Yes with alien rom you do but there's a guide that lets you retain 4G with the alien rom.
Bootloader unlock instructions with alien link.

Thanks Kenny. I appreciate the info. I got that first issue with the su fixed. And I flashed the Laser P-Rom with cwm or whatever it's called. As for 4G, not too concerned with that. But I will see about unlocking the bootloader today. I appreciate all the info.

If you don't need 4G then flash away and unlock bootloader dude you should have no issues
Yeah. I'm gonna run out and do some stuff, come home then unlock my bootloader and flash that Alien ROM. How difficult is it to unlock the bootloader?

Overclock photon pleaseee
I want to know who's gonna be the first to post a overclock kernel for the photon
Cool Thanks again Man. I'm gonna try to do this tonight. But I keep getting caught up working on someones car or doing something of that nature. ha. But tonight hopefully! I'll post back once I do it and get the Alien ROM flashed.
No such luck, I can't flash the SDF file or something like that. and I'm not really all that intune with what I'm doing. So I don't know what's wrong and I keep getting a failed when I try to flash it. So I think I'm just kinda stuck not having an unlocked bootloader.
Okay. As I wanted to throw my phone at the wall but though better of it. And I really don't understand the Pudding thread. As I read through it. I used this http://briefmobile.com/motorola-photon-4g-bootloader-unlocked to no avail. I got a fail to flash on RSD Lite when attempting to flash the derpun.spf So now that I've come to a point of impass. Any ideas?

Was your phone at least 50% charged when you attempted it? If it wasn't you will get errors! Maybe you skipped out on a command? You should try posting the error you're getting in the bootloader thread so a few devs can see it. I would imagine many of them hang around their section and not general lol.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216097
It's the same error that photon pudding thread spoke of, Tried to use that fix. Didn't work. And the rest of it I can't make any sense of. I don't follow it, and the stupid site I used didn't work. So unless there is an easier way that is more clear to unlock it. I think I'm SOL.

I just recently bought my Transformer Prime, and like an idiot I didn't check to see if there was a root method for the new update. So I'm now updated to 9.4.2.21 and used Asus's Bootloader Unlocking tool to unlock my boot loader and I managed to install CWM. I made a backup of my current stock OS, and I currently am downloading Virtuous Prime - based on the WW 9.4.2.21 build - would I be able to install that? I don't need to be rooted in the current OS to install this ROM correct? I just wanted to make sure before I brick my new tablet for doing something stupid... Please let me know!
Thanks,

Why don't you guys boot into cwm make a nandroid back up and then attempt installing it? But most likely it won't work...
Well my download has 15 minutes left and from reading the instructions on the ROM itself, it seems that the only thing it needs is CWM so I'm going to try it out... I just hope I don't get bricked xD. Now would be the time to tell me not to do it if someone knows! Thanks!
If bootloader unlocked & CWM installed then Yes you are good to go, no need to be rooted to install custom rom
Well so far its good to go, I got it installed and its booting for the first time without a hitch. Got my stuff restored from my Google account and I'm rooted So glad that worked.
Heres what I did if someone wants to do the same:
1. Unlock the bootloader using the Asus Unlock tool.
2. Flash CWM using this guide
transformerprimeroot.com/transformer-prime-recovery/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-5-8-2-0-on-transformer-prime/
3. Create a Nandroid backup.
4. Install the ROM through CWM.
5. Reboot like normal.
6. Enjoy being rooted !
Maybe I'm being dumb here, but I don't think this gives you root access.... You are unlocked with a custom ROM, but I don't think there is a way to root on .21 yet. Am I incorrect? Still new to the prime here, so maybe I'm missing something. Thanks for the update though!

i'm in the same situation. one thing i was wondering about. is the process of flashing roms in CWM different ? i thought i had read that you have to do it a bit differently than most phones
I'm coming from my galaxy nexus (unlocked and rooted). Too flash a rom, I'm used to placing the zip file in the root folder...if that makes sense, then flashing using CWM. If I'm able to flash a rom on the prime without having root access (I AM unlocked however), where do I need to have the zip file saved? Thanks for the help.

Well if your running Virtuous Prime it comes pre-rooted on 9.4.2.21 and I've already created backups using Titanium Backup Pro no problems at all. In fact its really stable, been listening to music for a while with no problems. Yesterday I watched Transformers 3 - ironic I know xD - and had no problems at all and I ended up getting about 12 hours of battery life with the screen and WiFi going all day .

From my experience on Android devices (Droid X, Droid X2, Galaxy Nexus, and now Transformer Prime) CWM has been a bit different for each, but for the most part once you get CWM in, its just a matter of following the instructions of the ROM maker.
Virtuous Prime is different when flashing because it has a GUI when installing - something I've never seen before - which works quite well, its a nice touch.

Well if you go to TransformerPrimeRoot.com and follow the instructions there for flashing CWM, (of course make sure that you still boot normal after doing it) make a nandroid backup, then just flash like normal. When you get your ROM on make sure that you download RomManager from the market so you can get the latest CWM flashed as the version from that website is an older one, but it seems to work fine.
Keep in mind if you don't see the USB icon when in that icon list, it will show up when you unlock your boot loader.
Hope this helps!
Sorry to ask the same question twice, but do I need to save the ROM zip file anywhere specifically, or can I simply download the file directly onto my prime and then flash from my download folder???? I feel so dumb about this one
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA
As long as you have CWM installed you can put the .zip ROM anywhere. Most of the time I keep em in the root of the device (its just easier to find). Then just use Choose install from .ZIP or whatever the button is, and navigate like normal to install it. Make sure you make a backup!
Im up and running now. Thanks for the help! So should this root access stick now even if i wanted to flash aokp? Or if i wipe data do I lose root?

Man where is the file we need to flash cwm located at the guide you linked? Can't find it
Edit found it
su flashable zip
so if i understand this correctly this process will unlock the bootloader and install CWM, but not give me root access correct? Is there a SU flashable zip for the TF201? as well will this all work on update .21?
No you have root. I just did it yesterday. Unlock. Install cwm. Backup. Flash custom rom. You'll be rooted.
9.4.2.21 root without unlocking bootloader
Is there way to root 9.4.2.21without unlocking boot loader.

No. As of today there is not
If you have CWM installed you do not need to root. just flash the rom. (IK people already said this but i just wanted to make a quick clear post)
Ok I see that there are a couple of similar threads to this and I apologize in advance but I'm not sure exactly how to correctly interpret some of the answers on those threads...so I'm gonna start my own and see who can help lol. Once again I'm sorry if this new thread is considered obsolete by some or all.
I have a Motorola droid razr. Not the maxx just the standard razr. When I got my phone I started looking into rooting it after seeing one of my friends with a rooted thunderbolt. I successfully rooted my razr after doing a lot of research. I installed Titanium (not pro) and undelete. I'm fairly certain that I made a backup of everything on my phone shortly after installing Titanium Backup. Well through the course of tinkering around with my phone a bit I deleted certain files here and there that I considered useless or annoying to me that they were on my phone in the first place. Well when the upgrade to jellybean came out I tried to do a software update. It finishes, reboots my phone, then says the update was unsuccessful.
After some research I have realized that I probably deleted something that was important (lol yeah I'm an idiot) and so it wont let me update the software because of that. I realize that I could use titanium to restore those files but I have NO idea what files I deleted that were important. And I'm not all that comfortable with TB to just mess with it freely. TB has been something that I have used very little because I know I could probably cause some serious damage to my phone with it haha. I haven't done a factory reset because I know already that it wouldn't bring those files back.
If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I'm not a very technical person so I probably shouldn't have rooted in the first place but I tried my hardest to do the research first. Thanks in advance for the help everyone

It's never a good idea to do an OTA update over a rooted phone.
You should just download a rooted stock ROM from the dev forum (a 4.1 ROM) and flash it via your recovery (flash the zip file) or another custom ROM, they have some good ones!
OR I would just flash stock THEN do the OTA update, because whatever rooting method you used (I don't have that phone so I'm not sure) probably replaced your kernel with an insecure one or your system.img so you're failing the OTA update.

Is this a good source and video that might explain this to me a little better? I havent posted 10 times so i cant use the link but its a video on youtube called How to use fastboot files to return Droid Razr back to Android 2.3.5! It's the first vid that comes up. has about 9,300 views and was posted 7 months ago. I think my RAZR was on ice cream sandwich (not gingerbread) but it should be the same i guess? Thanks in advance everyone
The reason I suggest just flashing a custom ROM thru your recovery is once you RSD stock then do the OTA you're just going to want to root again and maybe flash a better custom ROM.
Just flash a CM10 ROM from the dev forum and see how you like it, it's jellybean with tons more options that the stock ROM.

The main issue i'm having is that after i rooted my phone flashing custom roms was pretty much the only aspect i didnt get into, so i'm not comfortable in the least with doing it. So just flashing a new rom might be a little strange for me. If i flash the stock rom will i lose everything i have? Like all my apps and pictures and info? And will it unroot my phone?? And if that video i posted above will work should i just try it that way?
I'm sorry to keep posting but I'm just trying to get some specific answers and I feel like if my thread falls too far down it will be forgotten lol. But that video title that I posted...does anyone know if that could be a viable solution? And if it isn't could someone explain. To me how to flash the stock rom so i can upgrade to ics. I don't think the razr has jellybean yet if I'm not mistaken
It sounds like you might be missing some of the stock apps. I had a similar problem while following the same upgrade path as you. I have a Verizon XT912 (standard RAZR) I'm lookin for a link to send you that helped with the issue...but basically there are several apps that would seem non-essential like Slacker radio or NFL Mobile that seem to have caused people trouble. If your update is failing at 30% or somewhere in the middle, this might be the problem. If this sounds like it could be it, Ill try and find the post that helped me find what I was missing.
watch your phone during the update, make sure its not actually cancelling and booting normally because of this error.
Do you know what version you were on before things happened? GB or ICS? You always use this utility just to start over and get back to stock. You could do like people are saying and get the files but this is easier. There is a version for either GB or ICS. Just need to get into AP Fast Boot mode and follow the directions. Also assume this is the Cdma phone? Here is something similar.
I would just start all over and flash.Make sure if you can that your phone is charged before starting.

So, I have the i545, it was updated to the newest firmware when I got it. Lucky!
I first tried all the old stuff like the noob I am. Bricked it a couple times, blah blah, fixed it.
I tried the newer stuff, and was successful in getting into the recovery, but all I can do is wipe personal data and cache, its not CWM. When I do, it gets locked into download odin section and says its broken essentially.
Any bootloader bricks it, and any attempt to do the newer stuff like Loki has bricked it. I have the original Rom saved, so I just have to push it through odin each time.
I want Hyperdrive rom, I am rooted, and I can't get the common "working" ways to work. What am I doing wrong? I just tried the loki method and it locked into odin download when it restarted.
I'm not frustrated at anyone here by any means, I know the big companies are jerks, and....I need help side stepping them...
Any suggestions?
Again, i545, 32gb, Verizon Galaxy s4. It is rooted. And I want Hyperdrive rom.
Thanks!
EDIT.
If there is a way through odin or something to push Hyperdrive, I dont need the CWM. Im just a simple custom rom user, nothing crazy. And if there is no way to go from the ME7 update, be it downgrade and then root and flash, be it odin, be in CWM or Loki method, etc., where do I go to add to the bounty?

Your stuck at the moment there is no custom recovery for me7. Theres been about 100 posts/threads about it. Hashcode a member here is working on a safestrap for me7 so custom roms can be flashed I advise checking it out. Its in the general section.

Ugh, I could explain everything in detail and not joke around, but then I'd just be a jerk. I've rooted, installed bootloaders, roms, etc., on many phones, not just mine. I know what I'm doing so generally I don't have to research how to do it. I upgraded from a galaxy S3 with MOAR (rom) installed, also did paranoid rom right before, jumped in and hoped that the S4 would play nice. It didn't. And you won't find a post from me asking how to unbrick it. The original Rom was backed up, so nothing to fear. I understand that bricking a phone is part of the risk, and unbricking it is part of the knowledge one needs to jump in comfortably. I did it 8 times yesterday. I tried 5 methods, one I tried a couple times because I could get into the bootloader but it would freeze on removing the cache. After each different combo, it killed it. Once I felt defeated for the day I came here. Believe me, Im not the person who turns on their phone and posts for help about what to do after its on. ^_^
Well, all I can say is you're learning the s4 the hard way

ME7 =no custom recovery =no custom ROMs.
Read the thread about SafeStrap being worked on by hashcode

Thats the only way I learn. : ) Following the 50 million different articles and blogs and tutorials is the only way I ever find anything. Rarely do I get a piece of equipment that just works the first time with the common used method for it. That's never my luck. There's always something stupid that stops it. This is the same with everything in truth, cars, computers, phones, etc. Nothing has ever just worked for me. So, now I just throw things at it until something goes through. People say there's no way, well...if that's the case then all the DEV's should stop trying. lol. There is a way, we just have to find it.
Well, every phone is different and just jumping in on a new phone without knowing the issues and pitfalls because you rooted other phones being naive imo. I've rooted maybe a half dozen phones and countless roms but when i got my S4 i still waited a few days and just read. The point is no matter how many times you do something whenever you get something new/updated, be a phone or anything else, you should always take the time to read and read.
Edit:
Also because of these locked down bootloaders (like the sammy knox) i would if i were you do A LOT of reading before buying new phones in the future to make sure you CAN root and slap a custom recovery on it. The root and custom recoveries may be a thing of the past pretty soon and we'll be purchasing Developers and Google Play editions if we want custom stuff.
Im new to all this and ive also never used the site before so bear with me
I got my Galaxy for christmas 2013... With that being said, when I opened it I updated it with all the latest updates like it required. A few days later I remembered how much fun my last rooted phone was and decided to root it. I ended up rooting my galaxy s4 using a method I found which you download some chinese application to your pc, Plug in the phone, it reboots and does everything by itself. I checked and it was a successful root. Yay...Until I realized I wasnt done yet. Now my problem is that I DONT HAVE A CUSTOM RECOVERY. I CANT GET ONE BECAUSE OF THE ANDROID SOFTWARE VERSION, LATEST BUILD NUMBER AND SO ON. My root is completely useless! Im left frustrated because I cant get any great roms, and do cool root stuff simply because i need to install a custom recovery to flash any of these things.
I tried downloading one using a method i found from Galaxys4root.com or something like that for Clockworkmod recovery.. The guy said in the video to copy the two files for the custom recovery, and paste them in a folder (He navigates through es file explorer finds Data>Local>tmp at least I think... and then pastes it) my Galaxy had none of these folders nor would it let me create them! The only folder I could open was the "Data" folder. After that, there was nothing else... meaning no "Local" folder and obviously no "tmp" folder inside of the non-existing "local" folder. Therefor the terminal emulator cant find them or use them while theyre in the "download" folder of my phone. (unless you just type something different into the terminal emulater to allow it to run them but im still new to this so i dont know how to do that either. Other methods i found for installing a custom Recovery this were either the exact same thing, or for an older version that was before all the updates That I installed. keep in mind i got this phone for christmas 2013 so its running "Android 4.3" My model number is "SCH-I545" with buildnumber ending in "MK2".... ITS ALREADY ROOTED.
It seems like nobody has any other methods out with those versions and id REALLY REALLY like to take advantage of my root... If anybody knows how to help me install a custom recovery please let me know PS I HAVE VERIZON... (idk if that matters) THANKS!!!

you need to research what the heck you are doing before you jump into this game. Countless threads in these forums describing what and what can't be done to S4 concerning rooting, recoveries and roms.
1. the vroot method in NOT a recommended method, a much better one has been out there for several weeks where you dont have to deal with chinese software/malware
2. Your phone is a MK2 base and you CAN NOT LOAD any custom recoveries like CWM or TWRP The bootloader is locked down tight and the prospects of this ever being hacked is pretty slim to none becasue of the security features in place both hardware and software sides.
3. The only avenue for a custom ROM is thru safestrap and the only 4.3 base ROM compatible is Hyperdrive 12.0
so sit back and spend some time and educate yourself. At least your phone isn't a paperweight yet.
Well the last time I rooted my droid, it already had a recovery. I did a bunch of research I just should have waited.. is that rom any good? And is it possible for me to get?

Yes hyper drive is an excellent rom, however as mentioned above, since the first phones initial release there have been lock downs on the phones bootloader so be very careful on trying to apply any type of root or recovery

Awesome! Well what would you personally recommend for someone in my situation? Should I wait until someone can break through MK2 then get a recovery when it is "safer" I guess, or unroot and do it all over again later (which would stuck because I don't wanna lose all my contacts and stuff).. Ive seen other people in my position and the are probably people trying to crack at it too.. The way I see it I already have the root.. I just need a safe way to get a recovery. I cant be COMPLETELY screwed lol. Thanks for all the input by the way. It's greatly appreciated!

safestrap has a recovery built in but as mentioned, you just can't load any rom you want...if you mean wait until they find a way to unlock the bootloader so custom recoveries like CWM or TWRP could run any ROMs...I hate to tell you, it is appearing to be highly unlikely to ever happen.
I looked up Hyperdrive and I liked it. Looked like a great rom and had everything I needed! Thanks alot. Would you by chance have any links for safestrap and hyperdrive 12.0? Because I didn't however find anyone using it on MK2 nor 4.3 so it kind of worries me.. Or if you know if a video, tutorial, or any kind of material with somebody using 4.3 and MK2 flashing hyperdrive through safestrap.

Hyper drive can be found under the Verizon Android development thread... Safe strap I believe is under the themes and apps and also under the original development threads, please read carefully when installing your recovey method, other than that you should be good to go

Well I got safe strap. But while I was flashing the rom, the process stopped on a screen with a black background and whit text and I fell asleep waiting for it to finish... I woke up the next morning and my galaxy s4 has SCREEN BURN.... there's lines and text all over the screen no matter what I do with it.. So now I'm going to return it to best buy and get another one. This Sucks haha. But now i NEED to unroot it by tomorrow and i need to know how to do it since I'm still running MK2 and android 4.3... i never finished flashing the rom last night. I just pulled the battery while it was frozen and rebooted It back into stock. I appreciate everyone's help so far.

You can use SuperSu from the play store to do a full un-root. Then you should be good by the sounds of it.
